Barbless hooks have pros and cons. Sure, it makes unhooking fish in the water a lot easier, which is good for the fish. However, barbless does increase the chance of the fish spitting the hook. Sometimes, this results in the dislodged hook getting dragged along the side of the fish at high speed, resulting in a nasty gash down its side. For this specific reason, some commercial carp ponds here in Europe actually ban the use of barbless hooks. And some trout fisheries allow barbless exclusively. So the opinions definitely vary.

Yeah, I can see the difficulties with them in those types of settings. They both have their fair share of pros and cons. Thanks for your input.

the problem with bad comments is you don't even know if these people are fisherman, mature thinking people , or plain idiots. You don't even know their age. I would not take a comment with a grain of salt. Like my buddy says " take it with a shovel full of salt". your content is great keep the energy up. especially for us beginners .

I can’t believe you’re having to put up with negativity like this over a personal choice. I watched your video on barbed hooks and it encouraged me to be totally barbless this season as I put everything back and I want the fish to recover fully with no issues. Like you I’ve caught fish who have swallowed flies and it’s not what I want to see so barbless will help with that. I got used to using them on the river and it felt like a went up a level in ability because it was about my skill in playing the fish …and that’s what makes it a sport. So I’m determined to do the same on the Stillwater I fish this year. Keep up the good work and please don’t stop making your films. Your opinion counts.

I really appreciate the kind words of encouragement. I will keep on truckin! I am not sure if it's the placebo effect or not but I did notice the same thing with barbless hooks. Thank you for watching :)

Here in BC we have barbless single hook rule.
I tie my flies and really like to watch others fly tying. Never pushed my agenda about barbless but I never like video or post with fly on barbed hook. I can't do it. I am quiet and just move on to the next. I never like videos with grip and grin. It is not necessary but I never post harsh comments. We have conservations officers who check flies on the river sometimes but they are outgunned with sheer number of anglers.

CO’s here are the same deal. A lot of land and only a few of them. We find barbed and trebles in “single barbless” waters all the time. I hope it’s because they haven’t been educated. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

@@greenhornflyhorn I see this every where in all hunting and fishing groups, whether its about saying “kill everything thats eats deer fawns and elk calves” to the hunters whom want to cherish all wildlife no matter what the species to the fishing community where I noticed the angler shaming for those who want to keep a fish, have even seen grown men bashing kids for that, I get the brunt of things for being a bowfishermen but I what matters is EVERYONE coming together because like you said there are too many outside entities and groups that are united and want to shut ALL of us down. We need to stand together because we are way to divided which hurts us whom love the outdoors in the long run, if we were too all be united we’d be unstoppable in my opinion.

I think it's interesting the different sorts of fishing and the different philosophies that come with them. If you're a trout fisherman, and you're targeting wild fish, you know how fragile of a resource you are playing with. Trout and very vulnerable and really require careful handling. They also love to gut-hook themselves. Bass on the other hand are like trucks. They are abundant and durable and generally hook themselves in the mouth. Likewise stocked trout are usually never going to survive the winter in their lakes anyway, so I am much less likely to worry.
It's all about context. What is good for some can be bad for others. Electric vehicles make perfect sense for suburban commuters. 4x4 trucks make sense for rural farmers. Pretending everyone is the same does no one any favours.

I think it is extremely arrogant to assume that what happens in a UA-cam video thread is ever going to cancel fishing. Most folks you meet out and about while fishing are friendly and often helpful. They don't behave like these haters on the discussion threads. Who people are on the internet is generally not who they are in public.

Fishing regs where I live allow barbs. They also allow trebles with barbs. They also allow anyone to keep two fish, including if they are only slightly larger than 25cm and barely a meal. If I feel strongly enough that the regs need an update I can lobby for that. But whinging on UA-cam is pointless unless it is just putting forward an argument for others to think about. For me, I pulled a treble out of a fish while saltwater fishing once and the tension dug two barbed prongs deep in the palm of my hand. Didn't enjoy pulling those back out. Barbs hurt. Slack line even loses fish on a single barbed hook all the time. Tight line on a barbless never does -- foul hooked fish shouldn't count anyway. Yelling at another angler for using a barbed hook is a bit like doing the same if they are keeping a fish where it is legal to do so, or yelling at them for even fishing at all because you are a bushwalker and it spoils your serenity. Say something if they litter, say something if they relieve themselves too close to a watercourse, but you don't have a leg to stand on if they know and follow the rules, it just means you are being a public nuisance. Mate, just found your channel and it is great, don't let this stuff get to you

Cyclists are going to get e-bikes banned too, according to the videos I saw within the last week! I hope others didn’t think I was shaming fisherman for using barbed hooks, I was worried that I would be shamed for choosing barbless and that’s why I shared my perspective and my reasons (I had 2 hooks cut out of me at the clinic when I was young and it was a terrible experience that kept me away from fishing for a while). It’s a choice just like any other, everyone has their own experiences. Our planet is suffering from overpopulation, this is just another sign of that, when people can’t share their views without letting it get the best of us.

I like that you fished a while ago with a streamer for steelhead and the spin fisherman was outfishing you. a small steelhead caught fly fishing with a thousand casts then becomes a trophy. Its not about the numbers ...its doing it your way...we fish for ourselves and respect our quarry.

Those PETA types will never have the traction to cancel fishing dude! I get what you're saying about people within the fishing community getting more aggressive, but it's been happening in every circle, not just fishin'. I think it's just a sign of the times. When it comes to PETA specifically, they are closely linked to actual eco t-rr-rist organizations, and they themselves are one wrong move away from being deemed t-rr-rists themselves with their brazen organized attacks on farms, farmers and pet owners. So all in all, I think THEY will get cancelled before us...
Also, within fishing itself I think it has a lot to do with the younger generations that are getting into the sport, and a lot to do with the garbage, gangsterism sort of brain-rot that specifically comes with North American hip-hop culture as well as social media culture in general. Hip-hop is the Rock and Roll of the modern generations and it brings a seriously toxic, clout chasing element with it, and social media clout/fame chasing only amplifies the problem.
In closing I think that most of the toxic and aggressive elements of the fishing community can be chocked up to youthful ignorance and will be something that most practitioners of the toxic behavior will grow out of.

This sort of thing is typical any time someone expresses an opinion or a preference on anything be it an activity, a product or a belief. This is what causes wars and all kinds of strife. It seems to be human nature to want to force others to your way of thinking or acting and there's little tolerance for those with another perspective or opinion.
My suggestion - don't worry about it. Do your own thing, keep your own council - you are answerable to yourself.

There is no reason for anyone to get ugly regardless of the topic. With that said, you are promoting a channel so posting something as controversial as barbs was going to generate opinions. You knew this of course as I'm guessing this isn't' your first day on the internet.
Pump the brakes on the drama though of fishing getting cancelled. People have had all sorts of views on this since the first person picked up a pole. It isn't going anywhere.

You tube gave us option to turn off comments, but I think we should be allowed to turn off likes and dislikes.

Oh, wow, I just read through the comments on the other post and by gosh you opened a can of worms literally, and these are the comments that were still posted and not the ones who shout the loudest and or offer verbal diarrhoea as a response, the best response is not to lower yourself to their level as you cannot win against an idiot as they have perfected it. I was expecting to get a slating from my comment, being a pro barb person currently! Too many armchair fish police these days as well as the activist, they ruin it for the majority, hence my comment of too much emotion / anecdotal evidence overruling the facts and common sense not being able to prevail as in a debated discussion where we all learn something from walking in another persons shoes. If it gets us talking, then I still think it is a viable point.
