  • You really only need 3 fly rods to catch 99% of fish! Yeah I said! I go over the three fly rods I primarily use to catch everything and anything Fly Fishing the Great Lakes region. From small Blue Gill To Large Musky!

    One of my biggest issues with fly fishing is that a lot of the time you got to spend money to learn you don’t like something. Hip packs, vests, packs of all kinds, what rods, weights etc.
    What I have learned so far is that a 6 wt if you are trout fishermen will cover you on lakes and rivers, whereas the 5 wt is excellent but a little wind at a lake and suddenly it lacks that power. 4 wt is awesome for dry fly fishing but lacks punch when dry dropping or even going with a small wooly bugger. Again and again I keep going back to my 6 wt… my least expensive rod too.

      That first sentence. It’s pretty bang on especially if you don’t have a buddy already into it. I try my best to steer people clear of all my costly mistakes but still……it’s a very personal thing. Appreciate this comment and am sure others will find it valuable. Keep er’ tight!

      The funny thing is I seem to break everything at some point other than my first and cheapest rod, a 9' Airflo 6wt. It works fine, and I worry least about it when beating through thick scrub and still don't manage to break it

      Well, the first question you have to ask yourself, do I like to fish? As a kid I got into fly fishing by using a tear shaped clear bobber and attaching flies to the leader. So that is pretty cheap way to find out if you like it or not. If you're unlucky enough to enjoy it, yeah, gets expensive fast. Then if you really unlucky, you'll want to tie your own flies...that hobby can break the bank.

    Thank you for reply Milan, recommendations of lines used are helpful to get most out of a rod, esp today when one is not sure if u need to line up or not. Will compare MPX grain wt to what I currently have 👍🏼🇿🇦

    JMC R2 5-6, 9', it's the best budget friendly rod that i have. I use a 5Wt line, and i cast it very far. I have another one 10' 7-8, that i can use it for pike, but i love my R2.

    As I mentioned in the video I made, I have an 8'6" 4wt Orvis Clearwater and a 9' 8wt White River Bugger. I wanted both ends of the spectrum with one for trout, crappie, bluegill, smaller bass, and one for largemouth, muskie, & salmon.

    I'm from a galaxy far far away... when you say Great Lakes you mean in that area as opposed to stillwater fishing in the lakes themselves? It was just that you were talking about swinging wets with that switch rod so I guess you meant rivers in that general area? I have a 9' 10wt for murray cod but although the streamers are big and so are the fish I feel I should use the 8wt that I use in the salt. I don't know how the Murray cod compare to pike... they are very heavy fish but I suspect are a shorter (but tough, straight into the snags) fight than pike but I guess I'll have to head up your way to find out, those pike are cool looking fish!

    • @greenhornflyhorn
      @greenhornflyhorn  Місяць тому +1

      @@Alex-zs4vb2lt5c i have no experience with murray cod but from what I have heard they’re strong fish! Pike don’t run(rarely do they)but will thrash and sometimes dog you down. You’re 9’10wt would definitely work. Early spring and fall time is great for larger fish. Right now it’s more musky that you will catch which are like pike but grow much larger. 10-12wt is the key to throwing massive flies that will make them “eventually” eat the fly. Great lakes area is an incredible fishery, it has tons of moving water and still water opportunities. Lots of cool fish too! Good luck out there and thanks for sharing 🤘

    Your light colored background/wall and bright oar really compete with being able to focus on you. I find myself often zoning out. Not because I’m not interested. Just distracted. Most people on YT with this set up have the back dark for this reason. Bit of opinion you didn’t ask for lol

    I think most people could get away with just a 9' 5 weight and 9' 8 weight. If I had to add a bonus rod to the previous two it would be 14' 10/11 weight two hander although not necessary for 90% of anglers.

    • @fredstumpf2006
      @fredstumpf2006 Місяць тому +1

      Yeah. That’ll cover just about everything. I like to line up the 5 weight to 6 when fishing for smallmouth. Loads faster and casts poppers and streamers more easily. Go back to 5 weight for dry flies.
