- Hey y'all and welcome to Sewspire!
I am here today to show you how to sew my version of The Market Tote Bag. For this project you will need approximately 3 yards of fabric, a 1.5" swivel key fob and an oversized fabric covered button kit, plus 3/4 yard of quilt batting.
To begin, precut the following fabric panels:
For the body, cut four 18" x 15" panels and two like size pieces of batting.
For the exterior pockets, cut two 18" x 12" panels.
For the handles, cut two 6" x 24" panels and two 3" x 20" strips of batting.
For the interior pockets, cut two 9" x 18" panels.
For the key fob, cut one 6" x 9" panel.
For the button, cut one 3" x 3" panel.
For the button tab closure, cut one 12" x 3" panel.
I hope you enjoy the project and will share photos of your finished Market Tote with me on Facebook and Instagram using #sewspire and @sewspire.
I will be back soon with another inspired sewing project. Until then, please know the creative genius in me will be celebrating the creative genius in you.
XO,

I love this pattern...it makes such a beautiful bag...I like making them with canvas and use fusible fleece instead of quilt batting...makes it a bit firmer....plan to try one with foam.....I have made quite a few and everyone loves them ,, says they don't look homemade........thank you so much for this pattern..it is my favorite.
My pleasure! Glad you like it!

Thank you Andrea what a great make
So glad you like it Cloudy!
I've just finished my outside of the bag, and there were a few hiccups along the way, but I kept going. I'm so excited now to continue, as my side and bottom seams lined up PERFECTLY! My outer fabric is medium blue with 5 inch black ink English Bulldogs that I ordered on Etsy. I even got one bulldog in the center of each front pocket piece. whew~! lol Thank you again Sewspire!
Cute! We used to have two English Bullies.
I also love this bag it is great! I have about six or seven of make😀 Thank you for the heads up on Harthorne fabrics I love that place they ship to Alaska free!❤️❤️❤️
I love that HT now offers free shipping. I used to have to consolidate my order for the week and now I can just order any ole day of the week. So fun!
Can’t wait to sew this….
I 💛💛💛 this bag. It comes together SEW easy watching you make it. It would be very handy as a bag to take to the market. The key fob is a perfect addition to this bag.
I’m working on making a couple bags from your tote bag pattern. One for me and one for a friend. Mine is almost finished. Love how easy it is to sew.
Thanks for this tutorial. Will have to make a few of these. Hugs!💝

Just made my first market bag...love it! Will be making more. My lining was puckering a bit (needed to adjust that) but realized I needed to make sure the seam allowances were identical for outter & inner pieces.
You got this!
Thank you. It is very simple and usefull. I will do it.😘
Thank you 😊
Nice
Nice tote. I will need to make one. Thanks
Glad you like it!
Son beautiful! 👍
CUTEST BAG EVER!!!!!!
Thanks!!!
Would love to make this!
I made this it was so much fun! for me and my granddaughter
Yay!!! So happy to see this comment 🙏
I watched this video on Wednesday and by Thursday afternoon, my bag was done. I've been looking for different bag/tote designs and I used used several of your ideas. If I knew how to add a picture, I'd add a picture. I used cotton duck with a cotton lining and a "real" button rather than the self-covered. It's cute cute cute!
That sounds fabulous! If you join you can share a photo in our facebook group: facebook.com/groups/183488042371692/about/
Thank you for the tutorial-love the tote! 🙂
So glad you like it!
Made mine a little bit differently, in NOT doing the drop-in lining (leaving an opening for turning in the bottom lining seam) and interfacing the lining pieces with SF101to add crispness and structure to the bag. Turned out really great!
My daughters & daughter in law all want one for their B-days this year!
Just awesome mam
I always use your idea's for making bags
Bit new to sewing bags so learing lot of things from u mam
I just love d way u teach and d way u give your knowledge to others
Stay blessed
Thanku
Thank you and many blessings to you as well! Andrea
Bah stich explain is very good I like you thank you madam
A nice size bag. I am going to use your tip for the faux edge on the pockets. Lovely extra detail. Also new to me stitching the pocket lining first. I always learn something new with your tutorials. Thank you
So glad you enjoyed the tutorial and picked up a few new tricks!
estoy haciendo uno dejandome llevar por este video para regalarselo a mi hija en su cumpleanos. me falta conseguir el boton. gracias por compartirlo. me encantan todos los que haces.
Thank you such a great tutorial. I learned many tips. I have a question about the keyfob piece. Do you put fusible fleece or interfacing on that piece? Thank you
So glad you are enjoying the tutorials. I do not use interfacing when crafting the key fobs.
Andrea you are so creative and always think of everything!! I love this bag, and the key fob addition is genius! I just picked up one of the button kits, love it! Learn something new everyday, from you!! Thanks for sharing your patterns and knowledge with us! I can only imagine how much time and hard work goes into your awesome video tutorials, not to mention the designs themselves! How you spend so much of your life teaching others is just amazing, and so greatly appreciated!! Hope you and your family have a fantastic Holiday!! See yall Tuesday ;) 🤞😊 Xoxo from Chesapeake VA 💗
Thank you Johnna! You are always so kind to me. It does take a lot of time to produce the content for the channel; but, as you know I am deeply passionate about teaching and inspiring others to pursue their dreams and embrace their creative genius...so it is indeed worth the effort! See you Tuesday! XO, Andrea
Do you use fusible quilt batting or can you use heavy woven fusible interfacing
What sewing machine is it you use in your videos! Looks like it runs like a dream. I use a juki tl 2010 which I love but I feel it could use a tune. I got it brand new. But it's not as flawless as yours. I've literally made all your UA-cam tutorials. I love just sewing while watching your vids. You inspire me and I thank you.
Thank you for writing Cassandra! I am so happy you are enjoying the tutorials and are having lots of sewing success. I especially enjoy sewing on my Janome DC2012 with a walking foot. Have you considered adding a walking foot to your Juki? XO, Andrea
Love this bag., could I quilt the front and back panels to add more stability to the bag?
Absolutely !
I love it. And so easy! Thank u for sharing! Where did u buy the fabric?
Fabric.com search sugar skulls
Sewspire thank u !!!😘
Lovely Bag!! Do you mind sharing where you got the fabric from?? Don't know if you mentioned it and I missed it. Thank you in advance. 😊😊
This particular print came from fabric.com / search sugar skulls
Oh please! Would you mind telling me where can I get that absolutely GORGEOUS fabric????
fabric.com :)
Mam bag to good.
My goodness its beautiful. Where can I purchase that fabric?
fabric.com
Love that fabric!!! Where can I find it?

Question about the outer pocket...if the inside pocket has a small portion showing on top to look like a binding, does that inside piece have to be slightly longer than 12” so that it matches at the bottom with the outer piece? Can’t tell from the video...although the materials list says they should be both 18x12... Just wondering...new at this.
I sometimes will stitch the pocket from the underside to prevent the contents from falling to the bottom or I align the shorter part of the pocket with the base and cut off the excess.
Andrea, where did you get that button maker kit? It is so cool to make a custom button like that. I'd like to know please. Thanks.
I just read down that you got it at Joanne's. Thanks for the video. I'm going to try this.
Good morning, I am thinking about using duck cloth for the bottom and a cotton sateen above that. Would lining the sateen only with Pellon 809 cause a substantial difference with the duck cloth or should I line both with the Pellon? Sat Nam , Namaste
I think I would line both Arlene.
I love the fabric you use, where do I find it,,, its so cool , amd my daughter wants one with this fabric, thank you
fabric.com search day of the dead or candy skulls
@@Sewspire Thank you,,so much. My Daughters will be thrilled to have their summer totes
I love it what type of batting did you used
I like Warm and Natural quilt batting.
and easier bag to make i will find some fabric for make one very soon.
Enjoy!
Hi Sewspire, It's me again. I had to get some lining and pocket fabric, so I'm back onto the project. My question is: Why do we stagger the inner pocket to give it a lip. It is to reduce the bulk of the seams on the bottom on the pocket, instead of laying the two pocket pieces once the folds are ironed directly one on top of the other? I hope I explained my question ok. Thank you
I never considered the side seams. So that is interesting to me now as I am sure there is a benefit. It was purely cosmetic. I like the look of the accent fabric peeping up.
@@Sewspire Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.
I love this bag. I am just learning, and I struggle when sewing the top of the bag and lining. I always end up with too much bag or lining and pleats and puckers. What am I doing wrong??
Most likely your interior and exterior seam allowances are not consistent.
@@Sewspire you are probably right. I am terrible at consistency with seams.
I can’t find the measurements we can I find them great bag have made your satchel for my teenage granddaughter looks great thankyou
Hey Jill! Search Market Tote on Sewspire.com for a project round up.
You said that you used quilt batting to line the fabric so that it would wash beautifully. If you used fusible interfacing, would that loosen and come apart in the wash?
Ya know, I don't know because I have never washed my fusible interfaced bags. I would follow the instructions for the interfacing and if it indicates the product can be washed you should be just fine.
MusicaAngel
I was interested in this too.... I wondered how secure the batting is when it isn't fused. As it is only secured by the seams themselves. But I'm guessing you've done this numerous times Andrea, and laundered them plenty, and find no problems?
Very nice , beautiful and so easy to make. But this type of fabric does not get in Nagpur , India.
I am glad you like the bag and am confident there are many other beautiful fabrics from which you can choose.
At what point in the bag making, should I attach my labels?
As you are crafting the independent panels or pockets. Sometimes I will sew mine right into the side seam too.
with this bag I made, I put the labels in the interior in the middle of the 3 interior pockets leaving me enough room to put in the magnetic snaps! This is my first time using magnetic snaps but I gave my own twist to this bag since it is just for me!
Is the button cover come in a kit?
Yes, you can find those here: www.joann.com/dritz-half-ball-buttons--1-7-8in-size-75-2-pkg/2175537.html#q=button%2Bcover&start=1
What kind of foot do you have on your machine?
That is a walking foot. I love it!
Where did this material come from ? Please
Hello Margie! I got this fabric from fabric.com
Why are you used lining for each pocket
To make it nice.
I know you use Hawthorn fabrics a lot, but if you can will you please let me know where you got the button over and the name of the fabrics?
The exterior fabric can be found at fabric . com as well as the button covers: www.fabric.com/buy/0330951/folklorico-baile-de-calaveras-tea-eggplant
The interior is just a solid plum. And, the handles were from the Hawthorne Threads in house collection...but, I can't remember the name. If you email Charlie or Lindsey at HT they will be able to help you for sure.
