  • Hey y'all and welcome to Sewspire!
    Today I am here to show you how to make a multi-pocket tote bag that I think is the Ultimate Tote because you can size the pockets to suit your needs exactly.
    This sewing tutorial is a little different format than the others because I promised my friend Amy Reber I would create a PDF Tutorial for her fabric fans. So, I have meshed the two formats to create a dynamic tutorial which you can watch and/or print.
    I hope you enjoy the project and will share pictures of your finished totes with Amy and I on Instagram and Facebook using #sewspire and @sewspire
    Next month I will be kicking off a new series that is centered upon Studio Design and Organization. I will be back next week to share more on that topic.
    Until we meet again, the creative genius in me, salutes the creative genius in you!
    XO,
    Andrea

    Andrea, I enjoy your videos and I'm thinking about taking up sewing. Could you tell me about your sewing machine model? And where do you buy your fabric and notions? My mother used to sew and back then there were fabric shops everywhere. I haven't seen one in many years. I know Walmart used to carry lage bolts of fabric, but lately I've only seen small squares of fabric there.

    • @Sewspire
      @Sewspire  7 років тому +4

      Hello Lila! I have six sewing machines (four which I use to teach classes at our local community center and two which I sew on regularly). My favorite brand of sewing machine is the Janome, in particular the Magnolia and DC models, both of which I ordered from Amazon.com. I order most of my cotton fabric from hawthornethreads.com and the thicker Premier Prints from fabric.com. In May of 2017 I will be producing a Sewspire video series about studio organization and I will be sure to talk more about my machines and supply sources then. I hope you do take up sewing and would be happy to answer any questions you have along the way. XO, Andrea

    I was thinking of leaving one interior pocket full-sized, as it will be the perfect size for my calendar, and will keep it from falling open inside the bag (or tucked-in items from falling out!). I am also thinking that I'll put some interfacing on that piece of fabric to prevent it from sagging. Got all of my fabric cut out and I'm 12" short on the batting, so I'll get back to this in a couple of days when I can get more.

    • @Sewspire
      @Sewspire  6 років тому

      That sounds lovely! Let us know how it all comes together!

      The full-length pocket is perfect for a couple of slim folders or a thin notebook. I really like how it turned out.

    This is a perfect project for my Denver Broncos & canvas fabric!! I just think that I want to add some type of closure. Did you just use a straight stitch for the outside pockets or were they a little more decorative?

    • @Sewspire
      @Sewspire  7 років тому

      Yes, that was a straight stitch with two rows of stitching on the exterior pocket panels. Happy sewing!

  • @JoGriecoCBG

    Woohoo!!! Beautiful. Andrea, what size needle do use to sew through all the layers?

    • @Sewspire
      @Sewspire  6 років тому

      Hi Jo! I usually stick with the 90/14 as they will move through thick layers with ease.

  • @freetosewandcraft1
    @freetosewandcraft1 7 років тому +1

    On the body and interior panels, did you zig zag down the middle? It looked like it. If so, was it to make it more secure?

    • @Sewspire

    Did you use fusible batting on this tote bag?

    • @Sewspire
      @Sewspire  6 років тому

      I either use fusible fleece or warm and natural batting for the bags. The fleece offers more body and the batting offers washability.

It will make more sense to some of us. This is a very worthy tote to finish. Just don't know how to meet the missing steps.
