very glad dermatologists are publicly talking about how overhyped hyaluronic acid is! It is actually quite difficult to find a serum WITHOUT it and I don't really like using it as my skin feels very tight a couple of hours after using products with it. off topic but regarding anti dandruff shampoos, it is now impossible to find ones with zinc pyrithione which is the only ingredient that used to work for me, now they are all just piroctone olamine. If you release a shampoo for this please formulate it with zinc pyrithione
Thank you Dr Sam. I have often wondered why very costly products didn’t hit the mark for me. Education through these videos not only helps us save money but also learn what skin needs in the most simplistic way. X
Wow, I'm mildly shocked to hear this after all the years that hyaluronic acid has been hyped!! Thank you, Dr. Sam, for setting the record straight. I'm VERY glad I watched this video!!
Thank you Dr. Sam for this topic!🙏 People and skincare industry need to understand this..I, atleast, am so very tired of having sodium hyaluronate as an ingredient in every skincare product I use! Such an unimportant hyped-up ingredient! 🙄
Thank you, Dr Sam!! I thought I was the only one!! I jumped on the hyaluronic acid bandwagon a few years back with a super expensive serum - and, well…. the results were definitely not pretty!! Since then, I’ve avoided hyaluronic acid, which is incredibly difficult these days because its in EVERYTHING! I have dry, sensitive skin that is prone to eczema. I’ve realised my skin can tolerate it, in small amounts, and some of my favourite products I’ve used in the past do contain it- but give me glycerine any day!! Hopefully this is one skin care craze that will phase out soon!!
Thank you !!!! Exactly, I see people keep saying that it traps x1000 times water content. But they forget to compare natural HA already in our skin, HA delivered through injections/fillers and HA in topical skincare. That is not the same thing. If it was that moisturizing in skincare we would all be walking with plumped wrinkle free and baby smooth skin.

I believe and respect your professional opinion. I gave it up for about 6 months. My skin became different and didn’t feel good for whatever reasons I do not know. I returned to it (The Ordinary brand). I think I heard you say seal it and maybe that’s why it works for me - I then put on moisturizer, sunscreen and finally a light application of foundation. Maybe I “sealed” it. Anyway for me, it’s good. My goal is moisture. Don’t want fillers and it doesn’t act like one, I understand that. It’s 7$ a bottle so I’m not using something outrageous like LaMer. Btw, my foundation goes on very nicely! (Lisa Eldridge)
You are a fountain of knowledge. Inflammation/redness not what you need with Rosacea. I stopped using creams and serums with HA in a while back for this reason. Same with oils and perfumes. You don't need to poke the beast. Thanks for the straightforward explanation as always. I feel most safe just sticking to Dr Sam's own range. :-)
I try to avoid hyaluronic acid. I heard years ago it wasn’t that great and especially if you have dry skin and live in a dry climate. It can actually pull moisture from your skin and make you more dry. I have experienced this. I would never use it on its own. If it’s part of a product like a moisturizer with other ingredients I may use it but it’s not my first choice. Glycerin based products seem to work much better for my skin.
so it seems what might be implied in an extreme dry environment is, hyaluronic could actually contribute tp dehydration, if it sucks water out of your skin in a dry desert region or city.
It's good to see this as I've been following along with your channel along with two other well-known derms on UA-cam (Dr Shereene Idriss and Dr Dray). Dr Idriss has said HA is far too hyped as well and also doesn't recommend its use unless you're following your HA products with an occlusive moisurizer (I think I've heard Dr Dray say the same thing). I did a perusal of my skincare products and was amazed to find Sodium Hyaluronate in most of my products already. Yikes.

Hi thank you so much . I’m a big fan of you and your videos. Can you dedicate a video to get rid of eye bags and how to take care of under eye I use retinol under eye from la Roche but don’t see any change at all .
Hi what would you recommend for a 48 year old who happens to live in a dry state in a dry country. Currently using La Roche HA, Vit C, Baum and sunscreen during the day and Retinol, HA and baum at night.
How can we decide if our climate is humid enough that the HA is pulling the water out of the air instead of the skin? Humidity percentage? Relative humidity?
As someone living in Scotland (not a hot/humid place lol) and with very dry, rosacea and eczema prone skin I struggle with HA. It's becoming more and more difficult to avoid, as it seems to be in everything nowadays. A very small amount in a moisturiser is fine, but otherwise it seems to irritate my skin and cause a lot of dehydration. I understand that is because it is pulling any hydration I do have out of the skin, but avoiding it is more and more difficult. I like glycerin and beta glucan, or ectoin as a humectant far far better and don't have the issues with those I seem to have with HA. It's like niacinamide (which I do tolerate well) in that it's now in just about every product in higher and higher amounts, when very often less is more with many of these ingredients. Best wishes.
Fellow Scottie rosacea sufferer here - HA is in EVERYTHING! My skin is loving Dr Sam's products so far. Yet to try her cleanser and moisturizers but when my existing supplies run out, they are next on my list. Have you had success with her products? How windy is it here at the moment BTW!
@@victoriamills5903 It's been pretty windy the last few days lol. I haven't tried Dr Sam's products I'm afraid, so I can't comment on those. I use prescription azelaic acid 15% and a retinaldehyde as my active ingredients, with a few French pharmacy products and K beauty toners/essences. I'm glad your skin is tolerating them really well. x

Tks doc
Thank you for this video. I have just discovered your channel. Could you please give us the name of some serums that you recommend and that have HA combined with the right ingredients ?
No, not surprised. If you don't use it with enough water then it literally dries out your skin, so it's a backfire risk if not used right and why risk it?
I don't believe the hype around singling it out and making one ingredient serums but since using the Hada labo lotions(toner in Japan), which have seven sizes of HA, my skin has stopped peeling and flaking throughout the day. I don't live in a humid environment but I just apply the HA when my skin is wet and apply moisturiser on type while the toner hasn't dried. This method made such a huge difference in my skin which used to be sooooooo dry and flaky but now is more toward normal. I appreciate the video, informational as always.
Yes, the sandwiching method is the best way to use products with HA, in my opinion. That said, I live in Singapore where the humidity level is sky-high all year round and I find that I do not need to use a separate moisturizer. But I also have combination skin, so maybe that's why. I guess the environment you live in and your skin type makes all the difference in how the ingredient works. Btw, that Hada labo premium lotion you mentioned also contains other humectants and hydrators like Urea, Glycerin, Trehalose and Butylene glycol which work together to boost the efficacy of the product so I don't think it's fair to let HA take all the credit.
Oh me too! My skin is deserted dry and dehidrates very very easily, I have been using hada labo for 3 years I say, and when I am.out of it I can feel it. The trick is the sandwhich metod, first spray water+hada labo+ lock it with a moisturizer or spf. For me works wonders and I live in Spain...
Thoughts on Cerave healing ointment having HA? It does contain occlusive ingredients but still seems weird it’s in there. How do we know if the product itself is formulated correctly to trap the water and not evaporate it?
I'm sure the chemists at CeraVe and as of now L'Oreal (being the parent company of CeraVe) know what they are doing. As Dr Sam mentioned here, formulation is key to making the ingredient work. She didn't say it was a bad ingredient overall, only that it isn't particularly useful by itself unless you live in a naturally humid environment. In fact her own products contain the ingredient. My gripe with the whole HA thing is that it's taking all the credit for itself when in the truth, most of the heavy-lifting humectant work is done by Glycerin ( it's usually way higher up on the ingredients' list on any product on the market). This is not unique to CeraVe. I believe it is common with most, if not all skincare brands. I find it quite shady and misleading.
@@s_shaleh I know she said formulation is key. I’d like her to describe what that “key” is, especially cuz she’s formulating her own products My question is how do we know which formulation works? Blind trust? Trial and error? Considering L’Oréal adds fragrance to many things unnecessarily, how much should I trust them
@@21972012145525 I think it would be hard for Dr Sam to explain all the science to us in detail without making the topic too complicated. It seems you have a bias against L'Oreal even though it invests a lot of its money into R&D. Fragrance is not necessarily a bad ingredient unless you have a sensitivity to it. Yes, many dermatologists like Dr Sam and Dr Dray prefer to err on the safe side but there are also other dermatologists here on UA-cam like Dr Shereene Idris and Dr Sam Ellis who do not mind them in their skincare. Is it beneficial to the skin? No. But it does elevate the sensorial experience of using your skincare thus making it more enjoyable for many people. You are free to have your own opinion on the subject but it's not fair to discredit a company just because they choose to add fragrance into their products.
@@s_shaleh why would you say I have a bias towards L’Oréal? I use many cerave products 🙄 if anything my question is specifically about ha in an occlusive products. Also, I AM a person with extremely sensitive skin and cannot tolerate fragrance in leave on products. Not sure why you are answering for dr Sam (and whether it’s a topic too complicated for her to explain etc).
Doc , great video. I have Melasma I tried 5 peelings diferente cream like hidroquinona , retinol strong one I check a doctor and she said Melasma is hard to get rid off. Any suggestions?
Melasma is hard to treat without prescription skincare. You can improve it however by incorporating certain skincare ingredients into your regime: retinoids, azelaic acid and vitamin C. It's also very important that you wear sunscreen every day and stay consistent with your skincare routine ❤
I have never had more return on my investment than in Hada Labo’s hylauronic acid serum in terms of skin hydration. I’m curious why I have such phenomenal results in this case. The formula isn’t very occlusive but my skin is truly transformed by using it. Like I can logically understand your very well informed point, but my actual experience is completely contrary. I also don’t expect to get retinoid results from HA so maybe that is part of it.
Well I don't know about the serum but I have used their lotions and guess what it also contains some silicone , glycerin and butylene glycol which is also a humectant as main ingredients so before the HA. So just because a brand advertise on a specific ingredient does not mean that it is that particular ingredient which is doing the real job...
@@nevraelisaveta7009 Hi, I live in France so I don't have access to that one here. But honnestly after trying many serums, lotions I realize that a good moisturizer should do the job when applied on sligthy damped skin with 2 layers if necessary.
It's not in mine either , it's in a lot of products and I look to Glycerin and Lactic Acid is great too . If you live in a Dry Climate I wouldn't use it or dry skin .
Hello and thank you for this informative video! I'd appreciate it if you could tell me if Hyaluronic acid (HA) can be used to tighten the skin on the face, around jowels and jawlines? So I'm thinking of it as an alternative to cosmetic procedures like thermage.
I think this hype all started with Caroline Hirons. Now, I love Caroline and still follow her but seems after she mentioned it, every beauty company jumped on the wagon
so, i’m a dude. never cared about skincare AT ALL in your typical male sort of way. Until! Until I lived in a desert environment for several years and experienced for the first time ever, cracked skin on my fingertips. Due to my job. Which stings really bad. So, ever since then I cares a little bit more about my skin care routine. Also since I’m super pale sensitive skin and, I didn’t put two and two together until I lived in a dry dry place.😅 So my question is, hey, could I just, I dunno, maybe rub my hands with extra virgin olive oil every day? Or coconut oil? Would “holistic” natural remedy be just as good?
ya, i dont know why people use it topically. you have to consume it. This news report ua-cam.com/video/FgJ-bW6txuw/v-deo.html has clear proof of an entire village of people who eat lots of foods with Hyaluronic Acid and have amazing skin even at age 100! but they consume it! so either getting supplements or eating foods high in Hyaluronic Acid is the way to go
Put the HA on a wet face and then a moisturizer /spf before it dries out. I have been doing that for a couple of years and for dry skin and dehidrated is the best. Hada Labo are the best on the market and cheapish enough
@@esn2130 you got any suggestion for a HA serum applied on wet face that has a bit thicker consistency than hada labo? Vichy 89 I like a lot but it's expensive and I use a bottle a week easily lol
Idk, apply less amount maybe? Slide it over the wet face and then try to press it in, before it dries apply the moistutizer. Hope that works for you. Thats the way I do it and it works for me fantastically. I would get hada labo when finsih that vichy one, there is a whole range of them (with tranexamic acid, arbutin, moist, light...)Hada labo has 2 consistencies, the light (like water) and the moist (thicker consistency). I tried others but none as good as hada labo, and last easily 6 months applying once a day a drop, that is all what you need. Thats the only HA I use.
I've never seen any improvement in my skin when using hyped hyaluronic acid skincare such as Cerave. This video explains it

I'm glad your skin is tolerating them really well. x
I dont care for HA. My skin loves Glycerin. Ugh almost everything has HA..
Hi I'm John from Salerno Italy...I've been using sunscreen for over 15 years plus a 5:step skin routine your videos have been amazingly useful ..what I would like is to if there is anything more I can do for my age group I'm 59 .. people say I look 45...so I'm not complaining...can you also clear up doubts over facial masks there are so many out there.. a video maybe suggesting which to discard...from the low to the high range...I use a different one every morning before my routine so plz educate me. Tks doc
Thank you for this video. I have just discovered your channel. Could you please give us the name of some serums that you recommend and that have HA combined with the right ingredients ?
But do all moisturizing ingredients behave like HA in a in a dry environment ? Is it the same for glycerin, trehalose, sodium pca... ?
No it is unique
@@PennyWise-eu9nz Thanks!
What about hyaluronic acid as an oral supplement?
HA, Niacinamide & Squalane seem to be thrown in every serum, cleanser & moisturizer now . . . 🙁
Dr. what I can use for dry skin? if not HA
Glycerin
Ive always quwstioned what the hype about Hyaloronic Acid was about and it seems to be in everything. My skin definitely doesnt like it.
Thank you!
Thanks for watching ❤
Not sure why you are answering for dr Sam (and whether it’s a topic too complicated for her to explain etc).
is fragrance bad in hair oil
No
Depends,it's in a hair oil I have,maybe lookup ingredients
Doc , great video. I have Melasma I tried 5 peelings diferente cream like hidroquinona , retinol strong one I check a doctor and she said Melasma is hard to get rid off. Any suggestions?
A you tuber mixed makeup talks alot about this as she had it
Melasma is hard to treat without prescription skincare. You can improve it however by incorporating certain skincare ingredients into your regime: retinoids, azelaic acid and vitamin C. It's also very important that you wear sunscreen every day and stay consistent with your skincare routine ❤
@@DrSamBunting thank you soo much do you do appointments zoom.
Thank you
If your hairstyle was done with the Air Wrap, I want a tutorial!
So it's way better to take (high molecular!) HA internal instead of applying it on the skin.
Then it can work in the skin the joints, eyes, brain etc.
It's the best because it has different sizes of Hyaluronic Acid in it.
@@HereDiianas what do you think about the aveeno oat serum? It's mostly glycerin I think
Where do you live? Humid climate maybe?
@@nevraelisaveta7009 Hi, I live in France so I don't have access to that one here. But honnestly after trying many serums, lotions I realize that a good moisturizer should do the job when applied on sligthy damped skin with 2 layers if necessary.
It's not in mine either , it's in a lot of products and I look to Glycerin and Lactic Acid is great too . If you live in a Dry Climate I wouldn't use it or dry skin .
Hyaluronic acid really helped my rosacea
Absolutely agree Dr Sam… HA is not for me… xx
I don't think any one needs a stand alone serum of HA . K-Beaury generally love it but it's humid and they're all about Glass Skin .
I’ve watched it twice and still don’t get it! 😭😭😭
Didn’t like it at all make my skin look more wrinkly . I live in an extremely dry climate so awful for me . Cerave was the same terrible stuff
Thank you for the video. There is a constant thumping sound. Is that your cat? Haha.
i think somebody is knocking on your door in the background😅
Hello and thank you for this informative video! I'd appreciate it if you could tell me if Hyaluronic acid (HA) can be used to tighten the skin on the face, around jowels and jawlines? So I'm thinking of it as an alternative to cosmetic procedures like thermage.
I think this hype all started with Caroline Hirons. Now, I love Caroline and still follow her but seems after she mentioned it, every beauty company jumped on the wagon
Memo: Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid has the potential to be inflamatory
Is it OK to put HA OK on damp skin with moisturiser over the top before the HA dries?xxx
That's what I've heard. If you're going to apply an HA serum it should be onto damp skin and then immediately apply an occlusive moisturizer on top.
fish oil
I 💕 hyaluronic acid

so, i’m a dude. never cared about skincare AT ALL in your typical male sort of way.
This news report ua-cam.com/video/FgJ-bW6txuw/v-deo.html has clear proof of an entire village of people who eat lots of foods with Hyaluronic Acid and have amazing skin even at age 100! but they consume it! so either getting supplements or eating foods high in Hyaluronic Acid is the way to go
Is there value in mixing a hyaluronic acid serum with a moisturizer? i.e. put the serum on then apply a moisturizer immediately afterwards?
Glycerin, beta-glucan and ectoin are much better!
Memo: hyaluronic acid promises things they can not keep. RETINOLS can help with hyaluronic Acid.
I hate this ingredient
My skin hates it actually
I wish i have a wife looks like u 💔
So it’s not over hyped when coupled. 😂😂😂
thank you !
