    Good review, this was the first Kiss album I got. I got it when it came out and still have it today. After buying it, I instantly became a huge fan. I then of course became a proud card carrying member in the KISS ARMY. Soon after, I started getting all of their previous albums and many of the one's that came later. Kiss was also my first concert 1977, I was 11. Recently I was able to get another copy of Rock and Roll Over with the original sticker and insert, this time I'm wisely gonna refrain from using the sticker.

    Awesome review. That is amazing you had the artist in as a guest. Wowzers, now that is the kind of pro touch we are coming to expect from the Vinyl Geek. Now as for the album.. I have a lot of Kiss records but this isn't one of them. I don't know why. I love the singles from it and I'm very familiar with them. I'll defiantly be on the hunt for a nice copy of it now. I could watch this review Rock n Roll Over and Over! --- Del

    I recently only discovered KISS. Ive heard all of their classic albums now plus their eighties and early nineties work. This competes with love gun as my favorite album depending on the mood im in. People are talking about jamming to this album with their Dad. Its funny because my Dad doesnt really like Kiss that much. He got me into Rush at a very young age and when i saw their beyond the lighted stage documentary with Gene talking RUSH up so much it gave me high respect for KISS. I think that is what ultimately helped me get into them. As Gene screamed, "ROCK N' ROLL!" I was hooked! KISS is way more than the make up for me. You should do lick it up next in order to show case what im saying.

    according to the book KISS: Behind the Mask, the band and the engineer spent days setting up the mics in "the round" and then one night someone got high and rode their skateboard down one of the aisles and crashed the whole setup. they frantically tried to re-position all the mics and never told anyone about it. the end result is what you hear on the album

    My mom is from Pearl River, but she went to Nanuet often because it's the next town over. She was there from 1972-1985. I don't know if she knows that Kiss recorded in Nanuet. For me personally, I'm still in NY (an hour from Nanuet) and I love knowing all these huge bands either played live or recorded so close to home. Even one of Metallicas first shows was in Middletown, NY. That show was included on the deluxe box set for Kill Em' All.

That started happening on the Love Gun album. Only Gene, Paul, and Peter sing lead vocals on this one.

    Ok my review of your review. First off, the young guy(Eric?) DOES have a good interview style. Highly enthusiastic and puts it together like those Pop Up videos. I kept on thinking I was watchig Chris Isaak. sp? But he does have a style that puts the listener in the story. What was unrealistic was he spoke as if he was around in 1976 when the album came out
    I doubt very seriously he is of age for that.
    Michael, the cover artist was a great interviewee and made his involvement interesting.
    While there was two Kiss records released in '76 with Peter Criss singing a "different style of song", it made great sense for them to capitalize on putting Criss out there immediately due to the success of Beth. Beth increased the female audience.
    And Kiss has never shyed away from a working formula.
    All in all, I'm glad I stumbled upon this.

      Vinyl Rewind An Impulse: You might want to consider a segment of VR on the album artwork of Roger Dean. Dean came into his own in the early 70's, with covers for Canada's Lighthouse (*One Fine Morning*) and for the seminal funk-prog group, Osibasa. He also did covers for Uriah Heep and Gentle Giant, as well as his iconic covers he created for Yes and their long relationship. His style was copied many times over. This is just off the top of my head. Drop me a line if you think this is a good idea, and I can give to more research.

    • @VinylRewind
      @VinylRewind  9 років тому

      Adrian Lackey Ah yeah, his stuff is great! Not sure when I have time to really cover him proper, maybe when I review an album that he did artwork for? Like this idea

  • @PlasmicSteve

    Great video! I just subscribed. Very cool to see and hear Michael Doret talking about the cover design.
    On the idea that Paul Stanley supposedly wrote Hard Luck Woman "for" Rod Stewart - he's been saying that for decades and the way he phrases it, I'm sure intentionally, implies that Rod Stewart was somehow involved in the song writing, or heard or, or requested a song from Paul or whatever.
    Not true. Paul wrote the song in the hopes that he could sell it to Rod Stewart to record - just like anyone else could hope to do. The Paul Stanley self-publicity department strikes again.

    FYI , video cameras were available way , way before 1976..they WERE expensive. Called Porta-Paks , they were about $700 or 800 dollars, almost the price of a V W car..gas was 40 cents a gallon so that was a lot of " bread"(thats what we called money, dig?)

    The only Kiss record that was in my household growing up (my brother owned it)... On Long Island the Westbury Music Fair was a theater in the round, and I saw Chuck Berry/Jerry Lee Lewis there as well as The Kinks on one of their last tours together...

    • @VinylRewind
      @VinylRewind  9 років тому

      dixielandfarm I bet you saw Chuck Berry in better states than these days. I'm shocked he still does it. How were the Kinks?

    • @dixielandfarm
      @dixielandfarm 9 років тому

      The Westbury Music Fair in the round concert was ok, but you can tell how much the brothers hated each other. When I saw them at Jones Beach theater, I had backstage passes and got to see the whole show from behind the speaker stacks where they had a VIP stage set up on a scaffold... It was really cool to see my favorite band of all time like that, but it is also where I got to see how much of a douche famous people can be. Ray Davies was pretty dicky - I was going to go up to him and say hello, but when I saw him make fun of someone who did just that prior to me doing it, I thought better of it. They are still my favorite band, though.
      The Chuck Berry/Jerry Lee Lewis concert was amazing - they rocked.

    Awesome review. I wish I still had the sticker that came with the original album. "Rock N Roll Over" is one of my favorite KISS albums, just because the songs are all great and the production is not overblown and gimmicky like "Destroyer" was. I wish they had worked with Eddie Kramer right from the beginning and stuck with him throughout their career.
    And I bet they used black & white close-circuit cameras (which were a lot cheaper at the time) so Peter could talk and watch the other band members while recording.

    • @VinylRewind
      @VinylRewind  9 років тому

      ***** Thank you. Didn't even think of CC cameras, that makes total sense. Yeah, KISS sure did some wacky stuff throughout their career. (KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park) Makes you wonder what Kramer would have done with the material off of Destroyer

  • @michaelcoudriet5896
    @michaelcoudriet5896 9 років тому

    Long time Kiss fan here. I started listening to them back in 3rd grade with the Destroyer album. I must say you do a fantastic job on these videos. The pacing, humor, content, and stage design are spot on. I am considering launching my own UA-cam channel that covers music in a similar news/review style. How do you handle copyright when it comes to using/sharing online photos, websites, logos, music, video etc....?

    • @VinylRewind
      @VinylRewind  9 років тому

      Michael Coudriet Thank you! As far as copyright as it pertains to music, I've learned to keep the samples short, 3-6secs works good. Since the show is history/review based, most of the time the photos, logos, etc fall under fair use. I'm not claiming to own them, I am simply showing them to demonstrate a point. The Daily Show is a good example of fair use in action. I hope that helps

    Not bad over all but still some items were not correct 1. Hard Luck Woman was the second single 2. Ace Frehley did NOT sing or write music on this album and 3. this album came out when they were under contract to put out 2 albums each year from 1974 to 1978 then when contract talks happened in 1979 it was reduced to one album per year as well by this time the band members were not on the best terms with each other and also by putting out a disco song that same year it hurt the bands reputation as they were known by their fans as a hard rock band and as a result things started going down hill from there.

      @naecokcin 9 років тому

      Jerry Shimp I've seen and heard this many times before, and have also addressed this years ago. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but what you're looking at is just a flaw in the printing-probably something on the blue printing plate (perhaps some dried ink or whatever) to have caused that anomaly. Anyone who knows about printing would tell you that. I've seen similar printing mistakes many, many times. If someone had actually intended to draw tears, they could not have done a worse job than that. Those marks don't look like anything other than what I said-a flaw in the printing. They just happened to have appeared in a spot that allowed people who wanted to see something to see what they wanted. Does anyone recall the whole brouhaha with the Beatles and the whole "Paul is dead" nonsense? This is the same thing. Utter nonsense.
      But I'm sure my saying this will not persuade anyone to the contrary, if for whatever misguided reason they still want to believe.

    I actually kinda hate the backing vocals on the chorus of "Calling Dr. Love"; the live version sounds much better in this regard.

    This is so well done. Fine job. Not sure where you tape these, or if you are still rolling along, but if it is anywhere near NYC and you are still making shows, I would love to come on if you choose KISS's "Destroyer", as my book "Shout It Out Loud" on the making of the record is out now by Backbeat Books. Shameless plug. www.amazon.com/Shout-It-Out-Loud-Destroyer/dp/1617136182. But mostly I wanted to say, as a fellow album geek, I truly enjoy these episodes.

      +James Campion Yup, still going strong with weekly uploads. I tape in Los Angeles so if you're ever out here, let me know. Nice job on writing a book, quite an accomplishment. Thank you for stopping by

    I kind of feel that I want you, Calling Dr. Love and Hard Luck Woman are the best tracks on the album. The problem with it was how the hell do you follow up Destroyer? I think this was the start of the decline of the classic lineup because it's not 'til Creatures of the Night six years later that you start to see them pull out of the musical slump they were in after R&RO. I still think the Bruce Kulick era is my favorite tho.

    • @VinylRewind
      @VinylRewind  9 років тому

      ***** I'm not as familiar with the Kulick era KISS but I agree with you, how do you follow up Destroyer. I feel that happens to a lot of bands, take Arcade Fire for example with their last album.

    • @ZiddersRooFurry
      @ZiddersRooFurry 9 років тому

      Vinyl Rewind They've had so many amazing musicians and songs but for the most part the decade with Kulick feels like their most creative. They worked with a lot of great songwriters and Kulick is a very versatile player. Bluesy but also has shredder chops. Just look to Asylum, Crazy Nights, Hot in the Shade and Revenge which I feel are their best 80's/90's era albums.
      I liked Psycho circus but it's that album that (imo) signaled the end of KISS as a creative band and the beginning of KISS as their own (lesser) cover band. I say that as someone who loves the band but they haven't done anything truly creative since Bruce left.

      ***** What's your favorite, or what do you think is the best album that they did with Bruce?

    • @ZiddersRooFurry
      @ZiddersRooFurry 9 років тому

      Vinyl Rewind Revenge, hands down. While I love the previous albums Revenge was Kulick-era KISS at its best. They dropped a lot of the cheesiness and went for down and dirty. Unholy, Domino, Every Time I look at you and I just Wanna are just so amazing. That and I've listened to their cover of God Gave Rock and Roll to you is one of my favorite songs (a fantastic anthem even if you're not a believer IMO).
      I think that's why I was so sad to see them drop Bruce and Eric Singer after that album. Psycho Circuis is OK and was an awesome tour (saw them at the Providence civic center on that one-the flames melted our faces off) but it felt like a lot of the heart had gone out of their music by that point.
