No joke Tiff, Neil Gaiman would be VERY proud of your presentation of this masterpiece! Your emotionally engaging story-telling style is SUCH a perfect fit, that even after having already read a large chunk of Sandman, I now have a much stronger appreciation for it, and can't wait to pull it out from my shelf again! :D
You did great. I honestly love when you guys have fun and make jokes about good books more than bad. Those are fun too, but if I've read the good book I relive it AND have fun with the jokes. With a bad book, even if I've read it, I just enjoy the jokes. Keep up the great work!
There's this chapter where Sandman and Death gave this happy-go-lucky guy immortality. Sandman came to visit him every hundred years or so to see how the guy was doing. They would meet in a diner and talk and the guy would have always gone through some shit; he's rich, he's poor, he fought in a war, he was business man etc etc and with every visit Sandman would ask "how are you liking immortality?" and the guy would be like "it's still the best!". I wont spoil the ending but it made me cry manly tears and is a must read for any comic or Sandman fan.
@@josephgarcia5242 it is in the second volume titled “Doll’s House”. According to google its in Issue 13, “Men of Good Fortune”. Its one of my favorite stories from Doll House, which is saying something cuz Doll House is like a top 4 volume
Sal at 34:37 "One day we'll do Animal Man." Can't wait to see Ben's reaction to Coyote Gospel. Also, I laughed out loud at "now we're gonna get dark" 41 minutes in. Also, the Enldess Tiff forgot is Despair, Desire's twin sister.
Coyote Gospel. Wow. That was one of the weirdest, most incredible (in both senses of the word) stories I have ever read. The ending reaction, with the written story and Animal Man's reaction, were just heartbreaking.
Why haven’t you done Sandman Vol 2. This channel is the only reason I got into Sandman.. just finished 2, and ordered 3 &4... people need more Gaiman!!!!
Thank you. There really isn't enough Sandman on UA-cam. The people who HAVE read this eat it up, but there isn't too many others they can talk about it to. It isn't underrated, it's under-represented. One of the only other people I've talked about this series to was actually a college professor of mine. Again, thank you, and I'll probably be rewatching this just to hear someone else love it.
I hope you guys continue with the other volumes of the series. The Doll's House is really good but my favorite Sandman Storyarc is still probably Season Of Mists, the fisrt time the series pays off a lot of story threads.
I've never read Sandman, but they have it at my college library; along with Saga, and I picked that up because of Back Issues. Ever since I found that out I wanted to check it out, but every time I try to get it the first volume was always gone. Even if I don't win the book, I will be purchasing it myself, along with the other volumes, because of this episode instilled in me the utter need to read this book. #sendmesandman
Hey ComicPOP Team! Roughly 4 months ago I stumbled on an episode of Back Issues while at work. I have always been a huge fan of superhero cartoons and movies but I never purchased or read any comics. I began listening to old and new episodes daily and eventually landed on the episode for Kraven's Last Hunt. I was blown away by the story and purchased my 1st comic (well...trade). From that point I picked up some of the classics Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, etc. What started out as me reading a few of the classics has quickly turned into my favorite hobby thanks to you all. Over the past few weeks I have branched out into some of the darker/vertigo titles like Preacher and Hellblazer and have been hearing that Sandman is the title to read. I was very iffy on whether I'd like it or not because I didn't know anything about the plot or the characters. After seeing today's episode I now know that this is something I definitely would love. Thanks for all you do and for introducing me to the world of comics. #SendmeSandman
This is truly wonderful to watch you all enjoying Sandman! Please do the entire run.. it's an absolute favourite of mine and it's a real treat to see it being discussed here ❤️
I have never read sandman and I never thought I wanted to until this video. This video has shown me a side of DC I did not know about before and it has made me want to find more comics like this so I can explore these stories. It has given me the urge to dive in and develop a feeling of love and compassion for these types of books like you guys have. So even if I don't get this book thank you for sharing this story with me and your other fans. #sendmesandman
I read Sandman when it came out. Startet with #8. And did not stop until it was finished. This video has given me the impulse to start reading it again. Thx for that. Sandman is Gaiman's Masterpiece and will always be one of the best comic stories ever told.
Finally! I am so stoked for this!! Tiff did great describing this volume I think you should do all those Vertigo titles over time (Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, Fables...). That would be great.
I'm surprised Sal didn't read this himself as well, as Sandman is regarded as one of the must-read titles for any comic reader. And for very good reason. The story from start to end is amazing, I kept myself from reading the last trade as long as possible because I knew that would be the end for this epic. This comic was so good, that it was pretty much the only non-superhero comic that got into the sales charts in a comic market that at the time was ruled even moreso than now by the superhero..And of course Sandman is a mainstay in the top 5 of any 'best ever' titles lists on any worthwhile comic related website. This comic was so good, it received a prize that was meant for actual books. and the organisation behind the prize then banned comics from being eligible again in the future because apparantly they were peeved that people could think a mere comic could be better in quality than any book. (spoiler: Sandman is) I'm not much of a fantasy guy, but even when this comic delves into the fantasy realm on many occassions especially in the later arcs, I found it interesting and enthralling. And it must be true because I think this is the 1st time I ever used the word 'enthralling' in an actual sentence. :D This is one of the best comics ever made, by popular opinion of the comics community even, and should definitely be mandatory reading for any comic fan above 17 years old.
Tiffany I just want to say (and I know I’m late) but thanks for opening my eyes to this series. I have been a huge fan of this series cause of this back issues and the way you told this story was something short of amazing. Just bought overture and can’t wait to see what it has in store
This is why comic pop is so great, you have Sal getting us into most of the superhero stuff and Tifanny getting us into all the independant and supernatrual stuff so everything is covered.
I had read a couple Neil Gaiman's novels before picking this series up. The first and second volume were a strange read for me and I almost didn't continue. After some stewing, I continued and ended up loving it. Not only did "Sandman" promote Gaiman to my favorite author position, it also was the series that got me into comics. It gives me great joy that you guys finally covered it on Back Issues. Hearing all the different connections and threads (both recognizable an not) has me itching to pick up the series again (thankfully I have all the volumes). Keep up the great work you guys and onward to 100k subscribers!
I haven't read Sandman before. It sounds like the type of Doctor Who journey that follows someone so far removed that you can't really relate to them, but their journey in trying to live is just so interesting. I couldn't stop listening to you guys tell the story and I feel that reading it will be like that too. #sendmeSandman
As a 16 year old reader, fairly new to comics (been reading for about 3-4 years), I had heard of this series a few times, but have had it on the back burner since I can really only afford my current monthly books. I really love fantasy stuff from Image, like Saga, Seven to Eternity, and East of West, so hearing Tiffany talk about this series with such high praise has me looking forward to checking out this series and other older Vertigo titles. Thanks so much for sharing about Sandman! #sendmesandman
For me, this episode is an example of Back Issues at its best. Not only is the book in question engaging and interesting, the history surrounding it and discussion of players and events in the comic book industry at the time make it even more worthwhile. Plus it's funny.
For anyone about to ask, the numbering is different because we're getting this Back Issues early. Next week is #180. After 183 comes out a few weeks from now, none of this will matter anyway. Oooor, you left that spoon in the microwave and were transported to the future. In which case, here is your complimentary future gift basket.
I love Sal but man every time you see Tiffany is hosting you know things are about to be amazing. She gets to tell us all about the absolute best series' in Comics. Also amazing to see this show mature so much. From the kitchen, to the living room, to a professional studio. Weird to say I am proud but I absolutely am.
I've never read sandman but death continuelly pops up on forums and at cons, and seems like wonderful character. Also I noticed the Zubes is wearing deaths attire. #Givemesandman
Thank You , Mz. Tiffany,, for a loverly summary of Dream's early exploits. The initial trembling steps by Gaiman & Co. prepare the foundations of the Tales-to-Come. "The Sound of Her Wings" serves as the introduction of Dream's sister, Death, echoing the future yet unborn. Good Stuff! 🖖♾
This was one of the back issues episodes that I've had on my watch later list for years, as I always planned to experience the series first hand without the influence of others. I knew I would enjoy it based off of synopsis' and DC's mythological/religious stories, so I ordered the Omnibus years ago but today was the first time I dove into it after you guys released the episode of Volume 2 (tbh it gave me the kick that i needed to start this journey) and I am very glad that I have started. I'm looking forward to reading vol2 tonight and the rest as time goes on but this was a great video from tiffany & I wish I started the series earlier!
Guys, this was one of you're best. Tiff you were great, you did a great job explaining the story and dissecting the little pieces of this beautifull book. Sal and Ben you were funny as always, it's great the see you guys exposed to a type a story you're not familiar with. Now let's hope this episode does well so we can have more volumes in the future. By the way, Sandman was my first non-superhero book I read when I was young and it completely change my view of comics and art in general, and thanks to you guys I now going to read it again. Keep the good work.
Same. I started out as a Gaiman fan first, went to my local comic book store, shyly asking for anything written by him, and look at me now, spending all my money on comics. So yeah, consider me a new audience brought in.
It took me 30 years to get around to reading Sandman. I'm so glad that I did, and I was thrilled to see it get the ComicPop treatment. Thank you guys for reminding me that it's time I read it all over again.
Excellent video! My favorite part is when you say "Here's where it gets dark!" and the reaction. That was hilarious. "He just came back from Hell but HERE is where it gets dark?!?" "There was a woman being eaten by dreams, whose father is goo on a wall but here's where it gets dark!??"
Amazing back issues. Been watching for awhile now and Tiffany has fully come into her own here. The episode in general was great and the editing is on point. This honestly is my favorite back issues now and completely sold me on sandman when after hearing Tiffany go on about it all this time did kind of peek my interest I never really had any intention of pick it up. After watching this I just ordered the vol.1 omnibus and got a good deal at 80$👍. Wish you all much success
I never read Sandman before. I'm an aspiring comic writer and I've had terrible writers block for almost a year. Watching your video gave me the inspiration for my newest project, which I would be happy to tell you guys about. Keep up the good work, ComicPop! #sendmesandman
Best Tiffany episode yet! She's really come into her own. I love how she answers questions and in a way different from Sal's, more like a real good DnD DM or a camp fire story teller.
Neil Gaiman is an author that I had been meaning to read for the longest time but never got around to it until about a year ago when I picked up American Gods and Good Omens and now I'm hooked. Sandman is a title that I've been meaning to pick up not only because it's a Gaiman work but I've been trying to get into more graphic novels ever since I found this channel. Having Tiffany's seal of approval makes it even better because if it wasn't for her I never would have even thought twice about some of the books she's talked about which now occupy my ever growing collection and I would love to add this one to the mix. #SendMeSandman
Never read sandman. I wasn't born until 1997, so after it finished, and never had any experience reading comics until 2014 when my maths teacher recommended for our class to read the old daredevil, which my teachers favourite hero.
I'm 40 years old and an avid comic book fan, but I never read Sandman...Most of my friends throughout the years have told me that I needed to read it, but I neglected it...I think when I was younger it was too complicated and deep...I realize that I was right, but now I understand that it is complicated, violent, beautiful, sad, and rich story....Man I guess I really slept on Vertigo....Thank you guys for helping me understand a little about this universe, as it helps to understand what is going on in Batman Metal....#sendmesandman
Never Read Sandman. Been told about it for years. been considering it since reading the latest Batman Metal. After watching this I will definitely be picking it up. Thanks Tiff
After reading Y the last man I became very interested in reading other Vertigo books. I had decided a little while ago that I would put off reading The Sandman for a while as people seem to often warn that its not for everyone, however after watching this I want to read it more than anything. The perspective of Death discussed here is probably what finally sold me on reading this, however to be honest everything else sounds incredibly interesting as well. Thank you for offering the opportunity to win this and keep making great content! #sendmesandman
35:22-35:31 Somehow I can definitely see Desire making a joke like that just to piss off Morpheus (lolz)! 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆 Also at 49:47-50:00 I remember reading that part thinking that it would've been absolutely perfect for there to be one or two DC villain cameos (no one too high profile, just some lesser known Batman villains could work.)
Been watching your guys' show for a while now mostly for the laughs. I read Metal #1 last week and even though I loved it, I had no context for the last page reveal. I tried reading up a little on the whole Sandman world but I couldn't get into it because it was just too much of a commitment.Being a college student really makes you have to scale back to the essentials when it comes to buying comics. After this episode though I'll probably give Sandman another try because you guys made the story much more digestible and fun than I thought it could be. Thanks you guys. #sendmesandman
You guys have pushed me to pick that bad boy up regardless if I win! I only discovered you guys and my lady at the beginning of summer and I've been going through your back catalogue and thank you! I love you guys! The moment that stood out to me was regarding death and dream going about together as death did her job. It not only highlighted the brevity of live, but that we all have a purpose in life. For some that's to do great things, others inspire those around them to do so as their loved ones live was cut short. Also, I love how dream doesn't call his sister death, as she's more then that. Kinda emphasises the notion of not judging a book by its cover. Well at least that's the message I took from it. I would love, love, love if you guys and girl chose me #sendmesandman Please keep it up! Love Rob from Ireland.
Tiffany you are so awesome for doing a review of this book! I read the whole series and it was good. Everyone should read this book, if money is an issue for anyone just go to your local library and you would be surprised the amount of graphic novels that are available to you. Certain libraries allow you to read a digital copy as well. Please do more Sandman! Also Wytches and Monstress would be another great pick. Keep up the great work guys, I love this channel!
Hi there ComicPoP! I'm a fan from down in Florida and I just wanted to say that Tiffany's reading of Sandman's plot painted a completely different picture than everything I had heard before about the series. I had always pictured a dark, slasher, almost exploitation-esque story dealing with nightmares and horror, but now I understand that's only part of it. Throughout the video, I kept thinking about an interview with the animator Don Bleuth, who basically said that you can go as dark as you want to as long as it has a happy ending. I've loved that quote ever since I heard it and it sounds like it fits The Sandman perfectly. I aspire to be a writer in the future, and I'm glad to have identified another classic from before my time that I should seek out, and I thank you for that.(Yes, I have read Watchmen.) Rest assured that copies of all ten volumes will rest safely in my collection some day soon, and it would be an honor if you guys got me started with the first. With love and respect, plz #SendMeSandman
5159 I think you guys are on the right track when you figure that Dream considers murder and inhumanity just none of his business. It happened a few times reading this series when, for example, Rose Walker and Jeb are in increasingly deep trouble in The Doll's House and the suspense is that we're waiting for Dream to come and save them. When they finally meet we find that Dream has been looking for her to kill her. Then you realize: Oh, he's not a super-hero. Same with A Dream of You where the Cuckoo is definitely the bad guy but at then end we find she is just acting according to her nature and Dream completes an age old contract with her. Dream has all the power of the universe but he sticks to his job and his own predetermined set of rules. Gaiman did this a lot. It was so much fun.
Really hope y'all do more Sandman. I actually just purchased the Annotated vol 1 of it because of this video. Can't wait to find out more about Morpheus.
I got chills when Tiffany started talking at the end about the book's social and cultural impact. Thank you so much for doing this. Tiffany, please do more books that you love. Also, I have read Sandman, but not Watchmen :)) what does THAT SAY?
I have never read sandman before, but this episode opened my eyes, it looks amazing, so much depth to the story, I thought I had gotten it with quick summaries, but the descriptions here showed incredible depth and a lot to see and digest as well as a lot of visuals I would be interested in, this seems to be an awesome series, and I love gaiman's works and how he often plays with reality in interesting ways, also, hope this video does well, would love to see more Sandman, so hope it gets the hits to propel to more #sendmesandman
i enjoyed the Sandman comic when i first started reading a couple days ago, but the issue that truly hooked me was Death's introduction. There was something comforting about it, about seeing a version of Death so kinda.
Pick up Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes here: amzn.to/2xcVa8i
No joke Tiff, Neil Gaiman would be VERY proud of your presentation of this masterpiece! Your emotionally engaging story-telling style is SUCH a perfect fit, that even after having already read a large chunk of Sandman, I now have a much stronger appreciation for it, and can't wait to pull it out from my shelf again! :D
Dennis S Smith Seriously, thank you so much! I just wanted to do the series justice and hopefully get more folk to read it!
You certainly did your job then! The ComicPOP facebook group page has been a-buzz about Sandman a lot lately :)
TheRealZubes Thanks for a great episode, Tiff. By the way I was wondering when the winner for the giveaway would be picked?
You did great. I honestly love when you guys have fun and make jokes about good books more than bad. Those are fun too, but if I've read the good book I relive it AND have fun with the jokes. With a bad book, even if I've read it, I just enjoy the jokes.
Keep up the great work!
In dreams, I walk widh you, Tiffany
Sal: "One day we'll do Animal Man"
Ben: "I'm a little afraid"
Sal: "You should be"
This is why I love this channel so much.
I had to come back and listen to this again after watching episode 1 on Netflix. This video will never get old for me. I wish I could give more likes.
Phillip Creary this sounds really interesting! Any idea what issue it is?
I love that story.
@@josephgarcia5242 it is in the second volume titled “Doll’s House”. According to google its in Issue 13, “Men of Good Fortune”.
Its one of my favorite stories from Doll House, which is saying something cuz Doll House is like a top 4 volume
Oh man that one is such a good story it's mmmm.
That one and the one about cats dreaming about when they used to be giants are my two favorites
That Alan Moore picture is exactly what I picture every time he is mentioned.
Sal at 34:37 "One day we'll do Animal Man."
Can't wait to see Ben's reaction to Coyote Gospel.
Also, I laughed out loud at "now we're gonna get dark" 41 minutes in.

Why haven’t you done Sandman Vol 2. This channel is the only reason I got into Sandman.. just finished 2, and ordered 3 &4... people need more Gaiman!!!!
It took three more years but your prayers have been answered
If any of you want to know, the 24 hour diner issue was made into a fan made movie. It is really good adaptation of it so it is very NSFW.
Thank you. There really isn't enough Sandman on UA-cam. The people who HAVE read this eat it up, but there isn't too many others they can talk about it to. Fun discussion! There's a great guidebook for Sandman fans: "The Sandman Companion," by Hy Bender.
The original Sandman design is somehow freaking terrifying and hilarious.
Finally a Tiff led Sandman Back Issues!!!! Sandman is one of my all time favorite comics!!!
I just got finished watching the Netflix adaptation and wanted to rewatch the reason I even know what sandman is

Same. I started out as a Gaiman fan first, went to my local comic book store, shyly asking for anything written by him, and look at me now, spending all my money on comics. So yeah, consider me a new audience brought in.
@ComicPOP Really enjoy having Having Tiff explaining the book it was awesome and Sal's hilarious inputs lol!! I need this book now too thanks yall!
It took me 30 years to get around to reading Sandman. I'm so glad that I did, and I was thrilled to see it get the ComicPop treatment. Thank you guys for reminding me that it's time I read it all over again.
Tiffany I read it last year I am now on final volume. I cant wait for u to do them all on back issues! u rock!
I know this episode will probably not get as many views as Batman or Spider-Man episodes, but thanks for doing this book guys.
I will not die happy until Tiffany has talked about all 75 issues
Can we get the rest of the volumes too :D I think this is Tiffany's best back issues so far!
Yes, when the book (Magdalene Grimoire) is taken, you get a brief cameo of a still captive Morpheus in that issue of Green Arrow.
I just almost broke my keyboard clicking on this.
Best Tiffany episode yet! She's really come into her own. I love how she answers questions and in a way different from Sal's, more like a real good DnD DM or a camp fire story teller.
This is in the top 5 of videos you guys have done. Keep doing more.
"I mean, that's good storytelling, but Jesus Christ, Neil!" perfectly sums up all of my Gaiman reading experiences.
But I'm a bit miffed that when you listed the Endless you forgot about poor Despair.
Its three years late, but I am going to pick up sandman box set in December when it comes out. Thanks for the book recommendation.
I realized that this book is the one that's a audio book, so I'm pretty excited to listen to the book after hearing about it
We asked and you listened...
Can't wait to watch this episode❤️
OMG YESSSS I'VE WANTED YOU GUYS TO DO THIS FOR SO LONG!!!!!!
Would love to see more Sandman on back issues! This is one of my favorites! Thank you!
So happy for this, I didn't know where to start or what this was about but I'm so on board. To the ship!
Never read sandman. I wasn't born until 1997, so after it finished, and never had any experience reading comics until 2014 when my maths teacher recommended for our class to read the old daredevil, which my teachers favourite hero.
Awesome job as always, I think this is my favorite episode of back issues
Thanks Tiff
How did it workout for you?
One of my favourite series ever. Niel Gaiman is the GOAT.
@@MrNewguy456 cool I will check it out I like his books.
Also at 49:47-50:00 I remember reading that part thinking that it would've been absolutely perfect for there to be one or two DC villain cameos (no one too high profile, just some lesser known Batman villains could work.)
This was incredible I hope you get the views this episode deserves.
Half in the Bag is the movie version of back issues.
Please keep on doing sandman volumes if you can, i love it!
10 volumes is a hell of a commitment for me. This gave me a good idea of what the story is about and it sounds cool. #SendMeSandman
I would love, love, love if you guys and girl chose me #sendmesandman
Please keep it up!
Stay tuned to Back Issues this week!
I never read Sandman since it seemed so far from DC, but this is really seems kind of a love letter with the references.
#GiveMeSandman
I have just read this volume for the first time this week. Great timing!
Also, made a great episode of Back Issues. Cool stuff.
Just finished reading sandman like a day ago so it was awesome watching you guys dissect the first volume! Please continue the series :)
This and the new sandman is one of the best back issues y’all ever did
Thank you for finally doing Sandman!
Always love the Tiffany led back issues 💙
Fucking PERFECT! I was hoping you guys would do this but I didn't expect you to blitz it out this quickly!! You guys ROCK!
It would be absolutely awesome if you guys continue this series or at least go through some of the other volumes, especially Season of Mist
Sandman, The Maxx, Maus, Watchmen and V For Vendetta, All pushed what comic books could be and transcended the genre
Hellblazer transcended the genre as well by aging John in real time and literally focusing the series on one mans entire life
Nice! I ALMOST sent you guys my entire Sandman set of trades, almost.
Murphy the Storyteller They're totally incomparable, they're so different you just can't.
It says that you haven't read one of the best but you have read THE best.
I loooooooove this too! I literally followed you guys cause of this and that you guys were soooo informed!
Thank you for doing this
I have never read sandman before, but this episode opened my eyes, it looks amazing, so much depth to the story, I thought I had gotten it with quick summaries, but the descriptions here showed incredible depth and a lot to see and digest as well as a lot of visuals I would be interested in, this seems to be an awesome series, and I love gaiman's works and how he often plays with reality in interesting ways, also, hope this video does well, would love to see more Sandman, so hope it gets the hits to propel to more #sendmesandman
Sam Keith is still connected to Sandman, he recently did an alternate cover for Sandman Universe 1 (this past August).
I hope you guys are planning to do the other volumes, with the Netflix showing coming soon.
I BEG you, please continue to cover the other Sandman books! I cant find anyone that explains it like this online.
Reading this book was the most important, transformative moment of my life. I have loved nothing more
I really love this episode, you should do more sand man volumes, I love the series as a whole so I really am looking forward to it
i enjoyed the Sandman comic when i first started reading a couple days ago, but the issue that truly hooked me was Death's introduction. There was something comforting about it, about seeing a version of Death so kinda.
