@@amanzeihedioha Yeah
This series is such Hickman nonsense and I love it!
''Heres The Thing'' will be my favorite running gag
Or "*mid sentence*-... Okay, so... *SIGH*"
I love how almost all of ComicTube has just decided: this. We're all making THIS joke
Ethan/Ben: *asks a legitimate question that pokes a giant hole in the logic of the story*
Sal: "Great question! So anyway..."
Maybe I missed something, but I was under the impression that the Maker didn't so much make the whole 6160 universe, rather he steered it's history from the time he was able to get to it. 6160 existed, but when the Maker arrived he was able to prevent the Heroic Age from happening as it would have. Not that it makes much of a difference to the status quo of 6160, the Maker effectively created the universe as it is at the start of its modern stories.
That's my thought too.
At least before the Kennedy assassination. The only thing he didn't have the opportunity to mess with is Captain America in the ice because the ultimates beat him to it via time travel.
Yes they mention that the Maker didn't make universe
even in Ultimates #8 we get to see what the 6160 universe would have been like in the future with the Guardian of the Galaxy were not for The Maker rewriting their future
It’s kinda unclear, but I think 6160 at the very least is supposed to be extremely close to the main Marvel universe- or else what was the point of Maker taking all the records of everyone from the Baxter Building?
And even the current Ultimates are looking at 616 as what they were supposed to be. So I think it should be assumed to be a near exact replica… besides the weird OG UU references.
You got it!
25:43 Ben says "Here's the Thing..."
Edit: 32:32 Sal's turn.
You're welcome.
3:49 don’t forget this thing
@@buffriku9998 missed that one! Thank you!
Düm....is an amazing creation you guys have created haha
I can't believe Hickman didn't use this opportunity to do a comment on the comic about professor X and the Maker wearing similar suits and helmets, and/or maybe retcon that one of them might have inspired the other in some way. Anyways, great video as always Sal, Ben and Ethan!!!!.
The saddest thing about this for me is that we probably won't get the story Donny Cates wanted to tell. I really hope we get him back writing some day
Same here
I had the pleasure of speaking with him at a convention a few months ago! It was very interesting to hear his plans for Ultimate Spider-Man and how they are kinda similar to what we ended up getting
I could see a story where we find out the Maker failed to fix the "Where are the Ultimates!?" Universe and then decided to do this different thing. Unlikely though as Marvel is all about the new direction (until they're not)
Maybe we'll get an annual or a what if issue if we ask.
@@jesselion915 I would love to hear his ideas for what he wanted to do with the Ultimate Universe, if you could share anything he told you.
Also I'm assuming his plans for Ultimate Spider-Man was the original Ultimate Peter Parker married his MJ and had a family, if I have to guess.
“here’s the thing” joke never gets old, great episode
I am always happy when a new Back Issues comes along. Thank you, Sal, Ethan and Ben and also Tiffany, for making this 44 year old comic book nerd feel alive every Wednesday!
Marvel did hint towards Reed wanting to remake the universe in the original Ultimate line. Reed has a conversation with Sue about whenever they would do it if presented the opportunity and Reed says yes.
and not only that but it does harken back to hickmans FF and Secret wars run at least thematically. when doom is given the ability to control the remnants of the universe, he puts it tight in his hand like a vice grip. saving everything but within an inch of its life. when Reed gets said control, he expands forming new universes and planets and rebuilding existance. using that power to explore. and the Maker (especially post-ultimatum) has always been the dark mirror to reed. a version of reed turned to dooms perspective, a Reed who feels slighted by the narative that "went wrong". a version of Reed desperate for control over his existance, history and life. lashing out at others who "live better" than him. with ultimate Invasion he too is given that same chance that reed and doom were, creating a new universe for himself and using that oppurtunity to be as petty as possible.
kinda funny 616 reed technically remake the multiverse
“Here’s the thing” is my fav comicpop bit
I love Ultimate Invasion so much. I feel like tho that the ultimate outcome is that Kang from this will end up having been a future Tony that lost against the Maker and grew zealotized in his actions, and that Howard accidentally sealed that future into existence with his message to Tony and only realized too late hence his reaction upon seeing Kang's face.
Thanos isn't called the Mad Titan because he has an entirely sane and reasonable plan that will address universal resource issues...He is a fanatic that doesn't understand 9th grade biology regarding ecological resource management.
I think the movie gives him way too much credit and makes his madness sound convincing by not acknowledging that the plan makes no sense. The framing to me made it seem more like “he’s an extreme utilitarian who will destroy half of life in the most efficient way possible to ensure the rest does not die, and we are to understand that this is not worth it/ is immoral. ‘We don’t trade lives.’” Most people if they think about it will understand that this plan won’t help with resource issues, but to me the presentation was much more “idealism vs utilitarianism,” and I felt like I was supposed to use my suspension of disbelief to assume his plan would in fact work. Like, there were dolphins in the harbor in NYC, and less pollution (which implies Thanos had a point in-universe) but half the people were dead so it was still sad and seems like the wrong decision. I don’t think they should have framed it that way because calculating, maniacal, blatantly evil thanos is much more fun, but they were in their “every villain has a point” era and I think this was part of it.
@@jordanlink7020I just wanted Tony to point out how logically flawed his idea was
Jordan link bingo. If the movie's framing was right and Thanos' plan was the only way through, then Cap would be almost objectively wrong. Instead, Thanos' plan makes no sense and all his depth is illusory.
"Dispassionate, fair to rich and poor alike". Excuse me?! People were overusing resources, and you think killing as many rich people as poor people can solve it?
@@superjlk_9538 Right? Point out the madness instead of leaving the audience to assume “no, no, this part is scientifically accurate so Thanos is wrong”
I always found it funny that the MCU used a motivation that Thanos made up to convince the Silver Surfer not to stop him from getting the Gems 😂.
25:44 ooh my favorite running joke
Love the Thing gag.
This wasn’t Hickman’s best work. He had to do a ton of world building and set up in a short span of pages - and tell a story. It didn’t all work, but I did enjoy reading this for the most part. Part of that enjoyment is probably because I liked the world he built, even though this foundational story wasn’t the most engaging. And the subsequent Ultimate Line has been a lot of fun so far.
Man remember when sue was ultimate kang and they had the double infinity gauntlets. And Tony’s tumor was a stone
its kinda wild that ultimate kang manipulated 1610 reed to be the maker
That was awesome
Reed: But you'd regained interest in human life...
Maker: Yes, I have. I think perhaps I'll create some. Goodbye, Reed.
Düm: I know secrets.
The way they kept calling him Düm is exactly why I have been watching this every week for years
A back issue of Ultimate Fantastic Four could be interesting sooner or later because of how weird it is and how much it can be viewed in retrospect as aspects of the Maker being set up.
This book gave us the best Spider-Man book in years so I love it for that.
Jumping into the new Ultimate Universe already!? Let's GO!
I know Sal doesn't care for Ultimate Invasion but I honestly kinda like how in hindsight. When it came out, it was kinda lame because it's not what anyone was expecting, but after a reread after Ultimate Universe One Year In, I dug it way more.
This patreon sub pays for itself. I wonder what Donny cates version of this event and his subsequent Spiderman run would've looked like.
I don't think that would have had a Spider-Man from what we saw of the old ultimate Universe in Venom where Spider-Man died again and everything was on fire
ComicPop + anything Ultimate = a great time!
“Here’s the Thing” was perfection 🤣
Hickman acctually wanted to end his whole X-Men run on Inferno. But marvel saw the sales and told him to remade it and prolong Krakoa Era for couple of years more. So he did and just move on because edditors didnt let him write the stroy as he wanted to (again)
I’ll be honest, if you look at the perspective of just the X-Men book and not the whole X-line, writing the 12issue Hox&Pox just to give us 24 ish issues worth of X-Men would have been a waste. Yes, there was a crazy amount of other books but it’s such a good and radical change that to end it two years after would have felt disappointing even if it would have been incredible without editorial interference.
Did Hickman change his mind from his original plan? Because the way he described his big plan for X-men involved three massive acts, and Krakoa was only most of Act 1. He also said even after he left the book that his second and third act could be done even with significant status quo changes after his initial departure from the title. So that doesn’t match with him saying Inferno was always the planned end.
@@doctordoom85 he had different plan for ending. In his original vision Strom had c child from T'Challa raised in The World that will lead both nation, there would be redemption of Orchis with them uniting againts common enemy (and Moyra never had becoming a villian in the first place), Sanspot should've become an Shi'Ar emperor and some other things. But marvel stopped his idea with Strom pregnancy half way in the making (Giant Size X-Men were about it. But they make him change issue about pregnancy and storyline of Phantomex and The World was just totally thrown away) and made him rewrite Inferno. As for Sanspot, he and Cannonball should've been having their own ongoing, but it never happened (but one of HoX/PoX covers had this "vision of the future" of it)
Maybe Hickman confused Liz with sally avril since Avril is technically Peter’s first love interest since he asks her to go to a museum in amazing fantasy 15.
Liz also is in the mueseum with Peter and Flash in the Lizard debut issue so it could be he confused that with AF 15.
Sal may have thought this was boring but i loved it and I've been following and loving this new universe
This was boring, but ultimate titles are great
@Pharaoh_in_the_sheets to you it was boring
What's hilarious to me is that if this Tony is Kang, then the story's not just doing a version of Iron Lad, but it's combining it with young Tony from Avengers: The Crossing of all things
JUST reread the first volume of Ultimate Spider-Man (2.0 I guess?) So absolute perfect timing
Maybe that Absolute Ultimate crossover event is what Geoff Johns' Secret Crisis is gonna be about. Would be pretty rad.
Ultimate Invasion is how I got my best friend into reading comics. Glad to see you guys covering it.
Creepy Düm is gold! 😂
21:06 the maker didn’t go 1,000 years into the future, the city itself was created in the shape of an orb and inside the confines of the city time moved differently so a day outside equaled 10 years inside the city
Yeah I think they should cover the ultimate FF at some point
He even does the same thing in the new Ultimates book when he’s torturing 6160 Reed. He talks about how he can artificially control time in his dome.
Düm is the funniest thing you guys have talked about since the cow woman from the Wendigore Mountain story whose name I forgot.
Bova
“Heres the thing” is killing me😂 if they make it a running gag in every fantastic 4 related story it’d be the best
I kinda love The Maker tbh. There's something about the hero turned sadistic petty villain that just appeals to me.
The Thing jumpscare was a solid bit ngl. I just looked up while having it on in the back and sure enough there's the Thing.
Something that I've been saying for a couple years is that if they ever do The Maker in the MCU after Secret Wars, they should get the Reed Richards from Fant4stic to become him. It would be one of the greatest redemptions and he would play an amazing Maker. The movie was so terrible it turned him evil lmao.
The Maker's plan compared to "What's he building", I enjoyed that too much.
Sal's quest for all the Bloodlines tie-ins? His quest for all the Darkness Within tie-ins? They all pale in comparison to Sal's photo album filled with images of the Everlovin' Blue Eyed Ben Grimm. All for this!
He can't keeeep getting awaaaay with thiiiiiis!
This gives me hope of seeing more Ultimate books show up on the couch one day. I find it funny how it funny how writers like Cates and Hickman ran with the Maker while his creator Bendis only used him for that Ultimate Doomsday story. It's like a reverse Hood situation
I mean Hickman created the Maker. Sure, Bendis created the character Ultimate Reed Richards, but Hickman turned him into the Maker so it makes sense that Hickman has more interest in that version of the character.
Hickman did make the identity, but Bendis was the one who set him up by making him the surprise twist villain of the Ultimate Doomsday trilogy. Still, Hickman did more with the character and we're all for the better because of it
holy crap i unironically want them to swap the inter-dimensional invasions. Mr. Terrific fighting the maker would be amazing
Im just hoping Donny Cates is working on the Marvel vs DC crossover. Even better a Donny Cates Scott Snyder collaboration
The Ultimate universe is the best thing coming out of marvel right now!
In my opinion the best titles are The Ultimates Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Wolverine!
21:40 for those curious : he in ultimate universe is basically a human shaped single celled organism, not a man who can stretch .
We got millennial awakened Spider-Man, anarchistic Avengers (Ultimates), Manga X-Men, Black Panther in a war with Moon Knight, and now Shadow the Hedgehog as Wolverine! It’s awesome! Hick is the man! Or Jonathan idk where I was going with that joke…
This has been a very solid month for ComicPop coverage. I’ve wanted episodes on the last two books for a while, and I got into reading Wonder Woman Outlaw because of ComicPop. So it’s full circle.
I am forever disappointed that we didn't get Cates proper 1610 revival. And I maintain the marketing for thus was heavily misleading.
...but I do love the premise of Maker messing around and crafting this world in his image.
Sal keeps saying Hickman left X-Men because he got bored, but all I remember from that time is how the writers wanted to delay his story to write more during it. What's did we learn since then?
I went back and read Ultimate Invasion and Ultimate Universe 1 after I had decided to check out Ultimate Spider-Man. Im really glad i did. In particular Ultimate Universe 1 leads perfectly into Issue 1 of Ultimate Spider-Man. I love how this Universe has been set up and while Ultimate Invasion is basically a bait and switch title (1610 did not invade 616 for example) it's still a must read imo.
To add to the Ultimate Miles confusion, there was still a *different* 616 Miles confirmed before and after Secret Wars 2015. So again, how did this work??
Next week, Ultimate Spider-Man 2024?? It’s such a great series. It’s onto gotten more and more interesting as well. Especially with issue 12 and 13.
I like that Miles and The Maker have an ongoing relationship. It's interesting juxtaposed to 616 Peter & Reed. As George Lucas would say 'It's like poetry, it rhymes'.
Kang in this feels like marvels equivalent to black adam in dark crisis
Ultimate Miles...what a tangled web we weave...not to deceive but just to explain what how this would work...
Maker: I know! I'll stretch my brain out to be even smarter. Who knows what ideas my newly enhanced intelligence will produce?
*grows head*
Maker: Huh that was a mistake.
Dööm is my new favorite character.
I've just spent all of January reading all the ultimate books from the last year so this is perfect timing 🔥🔥🔥
Honestly I think Hickman is just kind of fooling around with this. He doesn't shy away from comic nonsense but he tends to tie everything together; everything from secret warriors all the way to secret wars is a continuous arc. As a writer he generally doesn't leave things hanging unless he has a plan to pick them up in another series later down the line.
It is kind of a shame that he didn't finish off his X-Men run but I'm glad he's back, even if it's for this shlocky book.
By the way, you guys always reference time runs out but I don't remember it ever being covered on this channel.
Dude?!! Great freakin vid and great story and conversation! Perfect sync of things lol
Ben Grimm has never been so important before
I was kinda bummed that Miles was only paid a visit and that was IT for the remainder of his involvement in the story, BUT it does look like he will be put back into play in the not too distant future if the upcoming free comicbook day issue is any indication.
How is that there are now two Ultimate Universes and the best thing is to come from them is Spider-Man? 🤣
the thing running edit joke is fantastic
Howdy fellas, let the views forever be in your favor.
What I think would have happened with Miles if he went with the Maker would have been that he would let Miles set up what he would want his life to be. Maybe Maker would make it so miles has an easy and comfortable life where he doesn't become Spider-Man or maybe the opposite and the maker having stopped Peter from being Spider-Man instead makes Miles the one and only Spider-Man with him apart of Maker's inner circle, like a mirrored dark avengers/F4.
I'd love to see the couch go through the Denis Camp side now with the ultimates book! This universe at least of now seems like it's holding together the vague idea of consistency and it's so awesome to see in marvel!
Fans: "So you came-up with a completely nonsensical premise utilizing a villain that nobody likes off someone else's idea to revive the universe whose likeness you’re copying for exploiting nostalgia?"
Hickman: "…I guess."
Fans: "And why should we care?"
Hickman: "Dad Spider-Man & Peach Momoko."
Fans: "Well about friggin time! Take my money!"
There's other weird details in UI, like the Maker having killed the Sentry and arrested Howard The Duck. The Ultimates also accidentally killed Carol Danvers.
@ill_Hex wait what? When did that last part happen?
@ It was in like the first two issues of new Ultimates. Though I think there it was heavily implied and the finer details weren't revealed until later.
@@Amuro1Xthe sentry thing is in the free comic book day comic
Regardless of book quality, we can always count on the comicpop crew to give the best quality vids!!!!
Just a few minutes in, but I love how Ben invented pre-retcon original Ultimate Iron Man, with his brain stretched through his whole body, *as a joke.*
I didn’t think it was pretentious, but that’s just because I’ve never seen anything like it before. I appreciate the critique of the book though!
Suddenly we know how this channel keeps going, Sal drives everybody everywhere and then doesn’t leave until everything is done. Smart Sal, smart.
4:32 That just sounds like an explanation for how the Original Ultimate Iron Man’s 1-2 issues went, at least how the Lyncara video framed it
I really liked this event I know it has flaws but It was the most interesting event for me since Secret Wars 2015.
I loved the episode guys! I've been looking forward to hearing you talk in depth about the new ultimate universe with the rest of the guys, it's been great hearing your thoughts on the series as they've been coming out on Off the Rack. I fully agree with your thought that Deniz Camp will be taking the reigns on the future of the line, but I have been loving his work on The Ultimates, which gives me some hope for the future. Thanks for the laughs, and good luck in the future!
Thank you for everyThing ComicPop!
I’m digging the new look for back issues
I am only going to call him Düm from now on.
Edit: Erin Hunter is a pen name for a team of multiple authors. I haven't kept up with Warriors for a few years now, so I don't know how many are on the team currently, but I recall there being at least four.
Every reboot makes calling it the "Ultimate" universe more ironic.
Every week you guys never fail to entertain me or make my day better. It’s been like this for years and I thank you for your work! Thanks guys!
I'm a huge fan of this story. It feels like Hickman just putting a bunch of his hyper-fixations on the page, from Howard Stark (who narrated Hickman's first Marvel book in SHIELD) to The Maker. It's messy and bizarrely paced, but it's pure Hickman nonsense.
Kinda a very cynical take there at the end there for this new universe. What’s up with that guys? I don’t get the vibe that Hickman’s burnt out when he has a lot creative control
Clearly Benjamin Franklin was an Eternal
We are one step closer to them doing a back issues on the new ultimate Spider-Man!!!
It's not a black hole it's a radiant!
"Here's The Thing" joke will never get old!)))
I really hope to see more of this universe, Ultimates was a fun read for me especially
Super excited to watch this video in a few months after I finally read this event!
But the 1610 universe has already come back at the end of Spider-Men 2 in 2017
IKR!?
fuck that incest edgy universe
In the story it's a "tada" in the thumbnail it's Bill and Ted's "Be excellent to each other"
That Tom Waits reference was fire!!
I love this! You guys rock. Keep it up!
32:31 I think that might be one of my favorite visual gags 😂
Good thing I watched Interstellar last night, that black hole grenade would've confused me.
That thumbnail is HILARIOUS!
In an alternate universe there’s a a group of friends on their show talking about this book very seriously, with little energy, and with posh accents.
I don't know which came first, DC's Absolute universe, or this, but they bother have the same premise, almost exactly, and I can't help but think they were put together in a rush for some reason.
Ultimate Marvel vs Absolute DC would go nuts
