I barely knew anything of Sandman beyond its influence on the industry, so this was a great, fun and enlightening learning experience on the original run.
Same. Linkara has taught me a lot about the DC and Marvel universe I didn't know because I've only watched some TV shows and a few movies here and there.
For what it's worth, Gaiman's elevator pitch for the series is, apparently, along the lines of: "The God of Dreams learns that he must change or die... and decides."
When you first started mentioning Sandman in your reviews, I had no idea what you were referring to. This retrospective was the first time I learned literally anything about the character and this comic.
14:20 The cast for the adio book is really good and filled to the brim with famous actors, with Neil gaiman playing the narrator, James Mcavoy as Dream, David tennant as Loki, Michael Sheen as lucifer, Jeffrey wright as Destiny and even Bill Nighy as Odin
“Where is the Endless for when you’re just sitting on your couch doing nothing?” Ah, the unmentioned Endless: Detachment…. Edit:alternatively could be referred to as Discontent or Disinterest.
Despair. Despair is about that. Remember the Endless are also their opposite. So Despair would also be apathy. Alternatively it would be Delirium. Or maybe Desire if you consider apathy or temperance a part of that.
@@1gient Its so weird how people assume that sitting around doing nothing = depression. I do it so I'm not depressed and stressed out because I'm doing a crapload of stuff.
@Linkara in the UK a fair few pubs have remained as pubs for centuries, one i frequent, ye old man and scythe, has existed in various forms since before 1250 and i can wholeheartedly recommend for a visit
Fun Fact, when designing the Eldest, gods of Pathfinder's fae realm, James Jacobs drew inspiration from Morpheus to create The Lost Prince: a god of loss and solitude. The Lost Prince is stated to be the only Eldest from somewhere besides the First World, and Jacobs said in an AMA that his headcanon had Morpheus arriving there after the events of Issue 69.
This was an interesting watch after Daniel showed up in Dark Nights Metal (Same goes for Morpheus appearing as the Golden Age Sandman during Stanley & His Monster)
I always read it as Morpheus knew what was going to happen to him the moment Bast told him to find an Oracle. That shock on his face could be because he knows Orpheus will die, but it could also be the entire ramifications of that meeting hitting him at once. But I’ve also noticed something today. We know that Morpheus’ story is “he must learn to change, or die” but the idea of change with ALL The Endless plays into the ending. Death itself is the ultimate change. So Death’s demeanor in always adapting to the times, and excepting it with a smile makes sense. Change isn’t something to fear. Destiny is, however you read it, the opposite of change. For something to change, he would not know it, he can’t change, nothing can ever change if you know its entire cycle. Destruction is the change of creation, but vice versa, out of Destruction new things are created, so he chooses to change himself to that. A creator. But why do I think Morpheus couldn’t change specifically? Because he’s also The Prince of Stories. To not change was his story, and whether he was aware of it or not, (I like to think he was in some way) when a story is over, it’s over. I could dig into this forever.
Daniel is still kicking around the Divine Continuum, being a partial driving force behind the recent Constantine special series "Dead in America". Honestly surprised he didn't show up in Knight Terrors, but some elements from Sandman and other DC comics since (the Dreamstones, for instance) did play a role. And in news of the OG Sandman kind, Wesley Dodd, along with other JSA stalwarts like Jay Garrick and Alan Scott, have gotten limited series that explore parts of their past (in Jay's case, retconning in a lost daughter for him as a result of the Stargirl story "The Lost Children; no points for guessing who was responsible for that story). In multiple aspects, the Sandman is truly among the Endless.
Ok so I just recently rewatched the Netflix series and I actually like how they handled the Magus in there compared to the comics in terms of his motivation. The Magus wanted to capture death not so he could become immortal...but so he could bring his dead son back to life. I find that to be much more compelling than wanting to live forever.
So about the eyes, there actually is ONE scene in the Netflix's version where Mropheus has the glowing eyes. It's where he enters Alex's dream. It's short and a bit subtle, but it IS there.
I read the 1. volume of Sandman and really liked it. I couldn't finish the 2. cause it was just too dark for my life. this retrospect is one of my favorites of yorwork. I think you should be really proud.
Thanks for doing such a great job on this retrospective it’s a very great video to show people who are curious about the sandman comic. Ps You would enjoyed the sandman audio drama but only the first part and half of second part because of the horror focus it does focus more on the comic storyline rather than the Netflix take on the story.
11:00 they're also the opposite. Dream is also reality, Despair is also hope (in fact in one comic Despair claims credit for Krypton being destroyed _and_ the creation of Superman), Death is also life, Desire is also temperance or maybe apathy or maybe both. Destruction is the one who really goes out of his way to stretch the limits in this direction by actively trying to create whenever possible. 1:08:50 if the Zoomers and Alphas are to be believed in certain circumstances it actually is trendy now. 1:39:23 funny enough Edison is a Shinto god now. Which I personally find annoying. 1:48:30 correction it's "THESE UNITED STATES AND PROTECTOR OF MEXICO!" the capslock is most defs necessary. 2:21:20 I like how he was voiced by the Joker in the show.
I admit, I’m not the biggest fan of cats, I’m a straight-up dog guy, but “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” makes me very sad more than anything. When I first read it a few years back, I was literally weeping at what that poor cat prophet went through. No creature, human or animal, should have to go through that.
I think Unity Kincaid is one of the very few examples of how to properly include r@p3 in a comic story. The act itself isn't used for ridiculous over-the-top drama or to senslessly make Kincaid a victim or force her through some sort of traumatic character growth. Rather it's used as a legitimate and important plot point for a multitude of reasons which couldn't have existed without the inclusion of the r@p3 happening.
Headcanon of mine is that John Constantine (Keanu Reaves one) is from some other multiverse world, you know, world that is called "What if____but American?" For example: Väinämöinen of Kalevala fame but American would have titular character killing a great fish with machine gun and then making it into a guitar. As for Sampo, the thing that makes among other things, gold. This version would have it, but the gold would be shared among few millionares. Oh, and Väinämöinen would be pronounced "Wain".
So I’m listening to the Audible version of the Sandman and I totally get why 24 Hours was censored for UA-cam. Like, holy crap, that was disturbing! UA-cam would’ve nuked you from orbit. D8
Considering how many spin-offs this series has had, maybe the Rose Walker parts by the end were supposed to tie into her own series that didn't happen.
Dear Linkara, I dare you to do this to the HoPR, doing one video each of the Saban, Disney, Neo-Saban, and Hasbro eras. Actually please don't, if you did I'd be tempted to take the week off it would take to rewatch them all!
What I find about the thing about Constantine's pronunciation is that this comes up in the Arrowverse crossover event, Crisis on Infinite Earths, where Constantine meets Lucifer. As Linkara stated in the review, they pronounced it as Constan-TEEN, but Lucifer, to be a dick, "mispronounced" his name as Constan-TINE. And this is despite that both characters possess some form of British accents. XD
Sandman is such a interesting series that has a great beginning and very sad ending 😢but damn it’s such a great series and universe that I would love to see more sandman in the dc universe but that’s just my opinion.
Random question: what was the name of that Patreon review Linkara did years ago with the Swiss superheroine that is hired into the American hero organization, who looks like Power Girl?
1:20:00 - I said it in the original video's comment section, but knowing where Gaiman leans politically it comes off to me as more of a critique of Thatcherism and its policies to the disabled. At the time (and to an extent even now) many disabled people struggle to get the support they need. While it is changing, its often still not enough - and its made more complicated by aspects which shouldn't need to exist.
Just my two cents about A Game Of You as a trans woman (though obviously my opinions aren't universal), I found Wanda's ending oddly moving. I have a really supporting family compared to some others, and yet I still have a lot of anxiety over what name I'd be buried under if I do die prematurely. But to have Wanda's friend symbolically do what should have been done in the first place and acknowledge Wanda's name and womanhood in death, and then to see despite Wanda's family having dressed her as a man, kind of their attempt to erase her and pretend who she was was who they wanted her to be, despite her body being warped back into something that caused her pain in life, despite all of that, we see in the afterlife Wanda looks like her ideal self. The version of herself she saw in her dreams, her square jaw and any other feature that probably caused her dysphoria in life not exactly erased, but softened and less exaggerated, both the artist and her own mind no longer exaggerating them because her mind is no longer troubled by the confines of a body that doesn't quite fit. To do that kind of helps my anxiety about that possibility, because it shows that those who actually cared about me will know who I was, and a bit of cold stone and some meat that is no longer me doesn't define my existence. And when a lot of studios today just throw a trans character in the background for brownie points and never do anything with them, this kind of representation, from a 90s dc comic no less, that acknowledges the reality of our existence, the good and the bad, the wonderful and the heartbreaking, and then goes one step farther to say "you are still deserving of the closest thing to a happy ending in this book" is pretty powerful to me
You are certainly free to feel that way, but I have to deal with trolls and my unpaid mods have to handle a lot of people already within it and limiting access in some way helps.
