- Well today we get the truck started, and some unfortunate news, the engine is toast.
In this video we troubleshoot and pull out the problem child!
Thanks for watching don’t forget get to like share and subscribe AND leave a comment with what you think happened to the engine!
Dude, way to stick with it. Like everyone else said, how in the hell could anyone neglect a Tacoma to this extent?! I applaud your efforts!
you shouldnt have a vehicle if you somehow manage to neglect and break a freaking toyota to this extent
Chufch. Soñgs
They put all that aftermarket stuff in the engine, yet probably didn’t change the oil or do any basic maintenance, astounding. I’m about as curious about the previous owners are the truck itself 😂
My bet is someone with fuck you money who used it, abused it, and sold it when he wanted a new one.
I’ve got so much done. Procharged all the bolt ons, custom exhaust with one cat instead of 4. About the be on 315/45 nittos. But holy shit how sacred I am about maintenance. I literally open my engine bay when it’s hot out because I wanna have her cool off quicker lmao. I can’t believe someone abused one so bad
Sounds like a lot of cope. There sure are a lot of 3rd gen owners on TacomaWorld with blown engines and they didn't all neglect to change oil or check oil level. Across all of Toyota's vehicles, the 2GR has had a bad reputation for engine failures and not always due to not changing oil or checking oil level.
I can’t believe that someone would do such a thing to such a beautiful truck
great stuff - was worried the extendo would just collapse hahaha
Im stoked on your progress thus far. Wish you smooth sailing from hear on out!
Thank you!
Again, it floors me how the previous owner neglected it so much in 3 years as to blow the engine!
Probably never did an oil change or any services.
lol if not for that he wouldn't of been able to get the truck
Having a supercharger probably didn't help
@@845ToastT that magnuson supercharger adds SOME power but it’s at the cost of redlining and raping your engine components on every single acceleration. If this is a project vehichle that gets taken to the dunes once or twice a month then that’s fine but on a presumably daily driver the magnuson does more harm than good
Did you notice the supercharger?
Great series, I like that you show your mistakes and mishaps. Glad to know not everyone on UA-cam is an expert.
When off-roading with a 2GR-FKS, extreme inclines/declines will cause oil to pool in the cylinder heads and could also lead to oil starvation. That may be the case here. Installing a catch can helps prevent the PCV dumping oil into the intake, which also happens in these situations.
Interesting. Catch can is on my list
I bet the supercharger wasn't helping anything also...
How do you know that?
@@firstlast--- the internet and videos of people's Tacomas producing plumes of white smoke after hitting steep angles.
A catch can has nothing to do with what you said. It will not help in any way.
I have a 2016 Off Road with 68k. Boggles me that someone put that amount of money into the truck. Then just neglected EVERYTHING until it was toast. To each their own. Good luck with the build!
It’s amazing how calm you stay when you’re doing all this stuff especially when you have an issue. Awesome to watch 👍
Insanely inspired by your dedication to fixing this Taco. Props for not getting discouraged!
Thank you!
I think the best build on UA-cam right now! Crazy that an abused Tacoma can still get you 100k miles!
I totally agree on everything you say!
Hey thanks!
Snapperhead
This is great, thanks for sharing the journey with us--looking forward to its rebirth!
Thanks for watching!
Send him money to help him
Wow.....I admire you're sand cowboy. No joke l mean that. Looking forward to the journey . With you all the way.
Your buddy has a pretty sharp XJ I see in the driveway... I dig it. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you! That’s mine ;)
Mega Respect for taking on this project! Patience is a virtue.
We may have to rename you the Toyota Kid. Haven't seen that much determination in a long time. Keep after it.
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Haha “nice and tucked away, thank you”
At first I was scared to hear a 2018 taco engine was toast until I saw just how many mods were done to it. If left stock and maintained at recommended intervals, should go deep into 6 figure mileage with little to no issues.
This whole series deserves 1 million views easy
I remember seeing this truck for sale on Facebook! It’s a shame how someone could do that to a truck
Crazy
wow all those connections going eveywhere is staggering good luck young sir
Thank you!
good to learn specially since this is rare. this is why you have to be careful with any car you're going to buy no matter if its a toyota, just my neighbor has a 2014~ corolla that he drives everyday and only changes the oil once a year, car is full of trash inside and never gets washed.
If the new engine isn’t in yet now might be a good time to check out the steering rack. Hear they’re a pain to change out on these trucks and is meant to be installed with the engine out
Replaced in episode 3, check it out !
i Love how raw ur content is, how u include ur mistakes. It's real, and it's my favorite type of videos. Thank u!
Absolutely!
The "it's okay it's okay" moment lol been there
Hard work pays off. Keep doing your thing.
Replacing bearings are not to bad a job.
Engine rebuild can be fun too.
My voodoo blue TRD OR is sitting somewhere in a junkyard with less than 4k miles. Insurance totaled it earlier this year when I got rear ended. The motor was untouched. Good thing there are plenty of these motors to go around!
I have a 2018 Tacoma with 28195 miles on it. I go by the "extreme conditions " for maintenance intervals
Same, 2018 Camry owner 2.5 liter
Siiick! Dude we just start a down hills series and bam no need for a new engine.
Combo of too much foot, and not enough 🛢and 🚰 and air, the previous owner wasn't aware if the trucks limits after putting on that super charger. Booyah 👊🏽😁. Keep on keeping on.
I have this same year and model of taco and this is so horrifying to see the condition of it and so incredible to watch the efforts you've put into fixing it! Excellent work!
“Thats what she said” Caught me off guard🤣🤣🤣
Spun bearing was my first thought when I heard it. I bought a 69 Buick with a big block and it sounded almost exactly like that after I took it for a test drive, and wouldn't stay running just as you experienced.
Bring that TACO back to life!!! Enjoying the videos 👍🏻🤯
Thanks Matt!
This is great!! I have a second gen tacoma, and just seeing the community around is amazing! This series is going to be sick!
Love the videos brother. You are the man!
I commend you, this kind of restoration/major fix takes some serious courage and commitment.
It looks like you guys are real professionals great job
That doesn't sound like its deep engine parts.....sounds to me like an accessory to the engine but I'd be interested to find out what it really is. EDIT: Oh I didn't see the first video on how terrible and nasty this truck was when you got it....sooo yes I wouldn't be surprised if the engine is just the same as the inside appearance.
I thought the same thing. Thought the noise could’ve been coming from that supercharger. I’ll have to watch the 1st video.
sounds exactly like main bearings are toast. rod bearings are also ruined because I hear a knock with the screeching skipping bad bearings sound. the smoke also and other things he mentioned, not worth tinkering to repair whatsoever. supercharger bearings aren't like rod/main bearings, completely different. different sound if bad. I still want to see a teardown of this engine internals and supercharger out of curiosity if he has time for that video later.
I agree with you prior to the edit lol. Kid should do his wallet a favor and download the factory service manual before purchasing a new engine. Even if the engine is dead, which if it spins freely I doubt, bad accessories could easily kill the new engine, since I doubt he replacing all that.
@@hostilityy If he's going to the trouble of pulling the old engine, he'd be doing himself a favor to actually tear down the old engine to confirm it is dead and troubleshoot WHY.
At first I thought you were stupid for buying this truck...then I saw your tools and gumption in this vid to dump whatever time money and effort to rehab this piece of shit...and I have to say you earned my subscription today!...I love this episode! I can't wait to see more...I vote for you not reusing the Supercharger...I love my slow yoda...I hope you go with reliability and decent power over taxing the new used motor for nominally a little more horsepower...
I also vote for him not using the supercharger. Sell it and use the cash to buy some other stuff for the truck. You don't need the power. Mind you I own a Vanagon
@@dannywildmon3712 No shit. Everybody seems to the think they'll turn this Taco into some kind of a baby Raptor with that supercharger. But for 64 more hrsprs at 10 grand a pop?? Uh.... No thanks. Just put that cash and your Yoda down on a REAL RAPTOR and call it a day.
Good God, that poor truck has lived a hard life in such a short amount of time.
Awesome! I can’t wait for the next episode
"Big Wheel Keep On Turning..."
alright my dude, i subscribed and im hooked.
I can’t wait to see that thing running again
Check out episode 3!
The truck is scratched pretty bad but I’m sure a nice cut and polish will bring back the deep black. Worth a shot
If nothing it will make it ready for a wrap
Great job.
yeah! dude! you cool you stickin ti it...
Second you got it to crank up and I heard that first little bit I immediately knew it was a spun crank bearing
Dude sick! Good luck! I’m hooked! Lol
Enjoying the content brotha good job 👍 sick truck to …
Its hard to imagine the type person that could afford to buy that truck and then treat it the way it was. legend
Probably bank loan. Most people can afford 500 / month.
Oh man. Fun times you had... Who is paying for your adventures? Please don't touch my Tacoma... LOL
The us government
Looking good!!! This truck is gonna be awesome when you are done! You might be inspiring a project down the road for me
I’d definitely recommend an oil accumulator if you’re gonna off-road this thing
Mike you are amazing! enjoyed the video. I sure was hoping it was just the fuse!!
Good work! I appreciate the time you are putting into this Taco.
I'm hooked!
That sip of Corona hit different for sure.
this dudes about to blow up trust me
subbed.. looking forward this this journey.
Funny beer part lol, thanx for the comedy 😅👍
This project is really compelling. I am being sucked right in. If you have the time and inclination, it would be great to devote a video to dismantling/tear down of the blown engine - to see exactly what it looks like from the inside. I have to be speaking for the many fellow Tacoma fanboys out there in UA-cam land. I wish you all the best with this resurrection. I've never seen any vehicle in such rough shape for a mere 3 years of (mis)use. It almost seems like the former owner was trying to see how much punishment the tattered Taco would take!
Dude your awesome for taking that project on. 👏
I’m really hoping that your gonna put the supercharger on the new engine
I just bought a 2017 Tacoma with 45k miles on it and pretty much pristine condition. My god, the amount of neglect this poor thing was put through...
lol the beer is absolute gold lol
It is
Man what shirt/ jacket is that you're wearing at the start? That thing is dope lmao
My brother blow the engine on his STI so he had it rebuilt. The engine builder ended up rebuilding it twice as both times he made a mistake that required another rebuild. After failing the third time my brother gave up. He said the best bet is buying a new short block.
New subscriber🤙🏾 love this contents
I'll buy that magnesium super charger from you? Great build btw can't wait to see how she turns out. You earned A sub!
I’m going to try to give it a go, I’ve always wanted a supercharged taco. I test drove a 2nd gen with a supercharger a few years ago actually
You’re a freaking legend bro 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Glad I came across this channel! Good work! I know the struggle with fixing broken cars haha! Will be looking forward to new episodes!
Cool can’t wait to see the finish product.
Great series man -- very cool to follow this one
So stoked about this build series! Absolute dream of mine to find something like this and tear into it.
I couldn’t stop laughing. Good shit man
Wow, Mike!! Huge job!!
You got this!!!
Improvise adapt and overcome
I’m watching. Like. That weld gonna break on the hoist

Thank you!
Truck has a lot of money in high end parts actually pretty crazy find!
Awesome, can’t wait to see more.
Thanks for watching!
You earned a subscriber!
Thank you!
Good job so far.......
love the build, and music choices!
Just found this channel good stuff man! I will continue to watch the journey!
Tacomas engines are garranteed for life
My mouth literally dropped when I heard how it ran lol
Yeah, not what you wanna hear
This is an awesome series! Looking forward to watching more. I'm not sure if anyone else feels this way but your audio is all over the place my dude. Sometimes it's a whisper and once in a while you'll be right close to the mic and it'll be loud as all get out! Gotta try to edit that out in post production!
Working on that…
I like your homies Branford CT sweatshirt!
Looking forward to seeing how this comes out. I would have to pull the old motor apart to see what was broken. Sounds like a spun bearing.
6:19 you must be a car wizard fan with that wizard staff there.
This was really great to watch. Thank you, subscribed, keep the content coming.
So the fuse wouldn't blow from just trying to start it. That would be a short, or bad starter, or bad engine causing over amping. Also engines with bad bearings generally don't spin freely. Also engines don't generally smoke, if there is smoke + aftermarket or hell stock forced induction, check the head gaskets. Regarding the engine, I think you were a bit premature in replacing it. New engines are pricey, especially if you're replacing all the attached accessories which easily could have been the problem. If you're not replacing the accessories, and just putting them on the new engine, you should trouble shoot to see what is causing the problems with the old engine, because if the accessories killed the old engine, bad water pump, bad oil pump etc, they could easily kill your new engine, and 2 new engines is more expensive than 1. I know some people like to just replace parts until the problem is fixed, or they're out of cash, but please do yourself the favor and pull the factory service manual and troubleshoot when you're looking at putting this much money in a project.
Thanks but I did troubleshoot, check out episode 3 to see the progress , I can tell I didn’t show it enough in this episode because I’ve gotten quite a few comments like yours.
The original engine burnt up from no oil. Cam bearings are shot, not including what the lower half looks like.
The fuse would blow, because there should never be a fuse inline to the starter to begin. It should be just one straight wire. It was added aftermarket and has since been replaced. Excessive cranking and amps caused the fuse to blow.
I have the FSM handy online.
Looks like a cartel truck! Better check everything! Aloha!
Something like that!
I’m excited to see this build come together!
Nice job man!
