600+ hours in and I am only just now learning the mechanics behind dodging o.o Wondered why my DB demon dodges were always so effective... Guess I need to invest in Evade WINDOW over Evade EXTENDER Xp Thanks! Very helpful.
I did my first teo nova roll yesterday! Also, evade extender might seem to be ineffective with rolling I frames, but they sorta do too. You are able to travel further with your I frame than if you didn't have evade extender. You demonstrated that dodging alongside jho's tail was bad because you were in jho's active hitbox. With evade extender, you can travel a bit further, which means you may be able to escape the long active I frames with the same I frames you have and evade extender. Thank you so much for the frame data on evade window too
Much appreciated! Thank you for the feedback! Yes, you are right, Evade Extender can indeed help in iFraming as it will make you clear the distance further. Most definitely it will make all manner of swipes that much easier. Perhaps I will include that in a future video but for now I am happy with Evade Window only.
Ah, this clears up a lot. I think most people's reflexes would naturally/instinctively try to roll away from an attack. The thought of rolling into an attack seems counter intuitive but it makes sense.

But now I understand it was because of my direction and the hitboxes. I still really suck at it. But at least I now can figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I'm so glad your created this channel there are so many hunters that are not aware of timing and I frames and why they get hit. With this itll give them a general idea how to properly learn the mechanics of this game .

This video (especially the slow-mo) really helps me know at least the basic do's and don'ts that I completely missed out on before playing.
Just a curious question about Extender though. Even though it doesn't increase your iFrames -- if dodged in the correct direction, it should reduce the amount of frames your hurtbox and the monster hitbox intersect, right?
Yes, that is correct. Extender makes it easier to dodge moves that you should "roll through" like breath attacks and tail swipes because it increases the distance that you travel. You're right in that the intersection of the iFrames and the Hitbox will be less.
Just found this video today, how do you not have more subscribers. This is exactly the type of information more players need to see! Keep up the great work

Nice seeing another filipino mhworld content creator! This is golden. Keep it up bro. As a non-TA runner - this is really informative for me since I don't really do I-frames! Thanks a lot! :)
Even though I may already be relatively good at evasion myself (not good enough to evade Teostra's nova, bravo to you for that!), it's nice to see that there are channels that explain the basic concept of evasion in Monster Hunter. It can definitely be helpful to newcomers and others who may not fully understand how to successfully dodge every attack, and even some of the more veteran hunters, like myself, can learn from these types of videos. Of course, just knowing how to do it isn't enough, and you still have to practice, practice, practice. Oh, and it feels sooooo good if you can successfully dodge an attack that you previously couldn't. :)
You're a relatively new channel, been looking for these kinds of tips for older MH games last year. Although in MHGen I can use adept style I know its important to learn to if I wish to continue/survive as a bow hunter in other games. It wasn't until later on it occurred to me that the safest way to practice with my weapon is by doing the low/village quests.
I see ya at 0:40 using a Q-TABS. Very nicesu!!👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 I just barely started getting use to dodging roars so I have a lot to learn here to make me a better hunter.
The evasion window data is fascinating. For just two points you can give swaxe hops a whopping 8 extra s. Real good info, even for seasoned veterans. Considering taking that skill over evade extender now
Great vid! I like the effort put into explaining dodging and showing in slow motion a variety of moves and how one can eff up the dodging :D Subscribed~
This explains (incredibly well) why I keep getting punked by attack’s. I’m dodging way to early to I-frame the attacks while also being fat too late to out-zone them. Guess it’s time to play more aggressive :)
Great guide bro I was looking for something like this, I was wondering if this game had I-frames lol. great work!! I’m really happy with you’re work seriously.
I have a friend who's new to the game and having a hard time getting their dodges to work, and this is a really phenomenal video for both explaining and visualizing dodging really well. Unfortunately I just can't show it to them because it spoils every monster in the game, which is such a shame because it'd act as such a great crash course on how to dodge effectively.
This is really cool since as a switch axe main my only defense is evading and repositioning. I'm really thankful for these guides! Also, I wonder if it's my timing, when I dodge Pink Rathian's big fireball I can avoid the explosion's damage but my hunter is always set on fire.
Glad you like it! It may be possible that you are dodging near the explosion. Fireball projectiles will only be fully dodged if in the middle of trajectory, before the ground explosion hits
as a generally new player to Monster Hunter, I highly appreciate this guide on how not to die. it happens to me so often that i’m beginning to become an expert on dying. also that sync tho 7:04
Thank you for the very detailed, and informative video! I was disappointed that there weren't any good videos explaining how to use i-frames for the longest time. Please continue to make more content like this! I also had a question regarding the insect glaive, and earplugs. I know that the insect glaive gets additional buffs when all kinsect extraction buffs are activated, such as flinch free and earplugs. Does the insect glaive get additional roll i-frames when all kinsect extraction buffs are activated? Does the skill earplugs affect the roll i-frames when dodging a monster's roar, or does skill just soften the blow when the hunter does "nothing?"
Thanks for supporting! For earplugs, it doesn't give additional iFrames, it only lessens the effect of a roar that has successfully affected the hunter. You are correct in your understanding. As for the IG buffs, I am no IG expert but to my knowledge there isn't a buff that increases evade window for IG, unfortunately.
@@Taxman_HH Thank you for the reply! Makes sense that earplugs just simply lessens the effects, than giving more i-frames. It would probably be too powerful to add evade window along with the additional buffs you get from all three extraction buffs activated anyways. However, unless I misunderstood something from the video, are the i-frames from the aerial dodge of the insect glaive the same as the base roll? I couldn't really find a straightforward answer looking on reddit, but I did see other people mentioning that evade extender and evade window do affect the aerial dodge. Honestly you could make a follow-up video just adressing questions in video's comments, or an FAQ! I'm sure I won't be the only person to ask these questions in the future lol.
@@KymberDarkus I wouldn't say I'm an expert in all the changed buffs, but I believe that the IG buff of giving you earplugs was taken out in MHW. It seems to me that you no longer have earplugs when you have all 3 colors. It makes it a little different in how you play IG, but if you're good at evading the monsters' attacks, you should still be fine; personally, it was more of a backup for me in the previous games in case I messed up my evade rather than something I relied on to automatically give me earplugs. Essentially, I chose to practice my dodging, even with the automatic earplugs, in case of 1) I messed it up, 2) the monster had a higher level of earplugs necessary to block it that the IG didn't give (e.g. Tigrex's roar), 3) I wasn't using IG, and/or a combination of all three.
That was an superbly put together guide you two, thank you! Just started MWH 2 weeks ago, decided to start with the Switch Axe, and loving the game. Just going to need to practice so I can hopefully solo Deviljho and Nergigante here sometime soon lol... subscribed for more MHW goodness :)
Thank you, my friend, we always appreciate kind feedback! I'm happy that this was able to help you out and I'm sure you'll be a skilled hunter in no time as you seem very dedicated to practicing. I've prepared myself for Iceborne and I'll be sure to give out more content in the future.
I think extender makes you roll further in the same amount of time? Hence it basically speeds up your dodge as well. Which means it's easier to things, even if the duration is the same. Because you can clear the hitbox faster. You can think of it like making each count as more frames, in a way. For example lets say you have 10 s, and you increase your range by 20%. That means those 10 s will move you as far as 12 s normally would before you can take damage. So while you have 10 s, you effectively dodge as if you have 12 s. So it's pretty relevant as it will impact all dodges except for the ones where you stay inside the hitbox for the entire dodge (but the hitbox deactivates before your s do).
I've been playing MH since P2 (or Freedom 2) and the over-sized hitboxes back then really made me fall in love with the two evasion skills. With newer games implementing more accurate hitboxes i-frame dodging has become much easier and many see evasion skills as the "noob skills," but I use them anyway as they are just so satisfying and fun :) Great video! It's amazing how many years of MH has sort of beaten these concepts into my subconscious mind, and it's really refreshing to review them in a well-organized manner. Speaking of extender though, even though it doesn't increase i-frames, it makes the hunter cover more distance during the i-frames, so I think it is still relevant to the discussion :P
Every evasion-maniac (like me). Should be able to figure this out. You just subtract the evasion out of the box. Boom, you get your i-frame. Very helpful video. Didn't know someone did this lol.
This really helps a lot. I just bought MHW with IB last month, and it hasn't been fun getting stuck fighting Barioth as a Dual Blades. I've been thinking "should I learn the i-frames to approach at the risk of hating the game from constantly losing to Barioth?", and keep deciding that I should be upgrading my gear instead and not care about the i-frames because there is no safety net after trying to i-frame, so any attempts to get better with DB against Barioth would be filled with even more mistakes and causing more stress. I didn't think that that i-frame window for rolls and Demon Dash is was short, tbh, considering how long the roll animation is.
The things that have frustrated me the most with trying to learn dodge timings are the complete lack of visual cue to indicate when i-frames are active and a controlled environment to practice dodging different types of attacks, be they quick sweeps, big slams, long and short charges or explosions. The only thing you really have in the training room is the dynamite barrel...

Of course, just knowing how to do it isn't enough, and you still have to practice, practice, practice. Oh, and it feels sooooo good if you can successfully dodge an attack that you previously couldn't. :)
Very helpful and straightforward guide for newbies. You deserve many more views!
I have no idea why in a million years I managed to misread this title, but I somehow did.. "The Awful Dodger*
Impressive work dude. Really improved my hunt by a lot. Thanks!
Evading a monster's roar is the most difficult part. I'm a GS main but I still want to evade a monster's roar. Nice video btw ^o^
I see ya at 0:40 using a Q-TABS. Very nicesu!!👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I just barely started getting use to dodging roars so I have a lot to learn here to make me a better hunter.
This is super helpful! This video should be mandatory for every hunter looking to up their game!
The slow no is such a nice touch with the lo-fi like music
This explains (incredibly well) why I keep getting punked by attack’s. I’m dodging way to early to I-frame the attacks while also being fat too late to out-zone them. Guess it’s time to play more aggressive :)
You are a god among men. I have been playing Monster Hunter since Freedom Unite, and I still can not get my dodges anywhere close to as good as yours.
Extremely well made video. Most useful tutorial i have found yet, thank you.
Subbed and liked, with no hesitation.
Whenever I roll through a roar, it's either one of those lucky ones, or my palico gave me earplugs.
Really appreciate this video and your hard work. And thank you for showing me why I take damage using the clutch claw.
Great guide bro I was looking for something like this, I was wondering if this game had I-frames lol. great work!! I’m really happy with you’re work seriously.
thank you for this video, this video helped me understand how to read and evade roll thru attacks
This video has made mea much better hunter, thank you so much for making this!!
This video is so good, that it can be applied to every game that has a dodge move.
this is a fantastic guide man, ive been looking for something like this for a while now.
Thanks for sharing this. True quality content and really useful.
excellent guide! well explained, and all the examples of iframing actual moves is very very useful!
Rath family fireballs leave a short lingering burn area that inflicts burn but does little damage.
as a generally new player to Monster Hunter, I highly appreciate this guide on how not to die. it happens to me so often that i’m beginning to become an expert on dying.
also that sync tho 7:04
Yeah, i nutted in that part.

Thank you for the reply!
Great info! Thank you for putting this together in an easy-to-understand way.
Great format, precise information, ... You gained a new subscriber ;)
Many thanks!
I find dodging clips very satisfying, please have more videos about it
Thank you for this vid, you did a really good job explaining how i frames work!
I've been playing MH since P2 (or Freedom 2) and the over-sized hitboxes back then really made me fall in love with the two evasion skills. With newer games implementing more accurate hitboxes i-frame dodging has become much easier and many see evasion skills as the "noob skills," but I use them anyway as they are just so satisfying and fun :)
Great video!
You've earned a subscriber, your content is on point my friend.
This video should come with the game tutorials!
I knew bout i-frames in general (DkS player) but this is a great explanation.
You should check out our Barioth dodge video too, if you haven't yet!

@@Taxman_HH Aye, I saw that after going through your vids. Was really helpful and got me through the fight.
After a year of playing MHW:Iceborne finally i saw the guide i was looking for! Thanks!
Thanks for the guide! Im getting really into MHW so I am very happy to have seen this.
Beautiful music! awesome video! EPIC SHOWCASE OF SKILLS!
Precise, clear, good relaxing music. Like.
Thanks for this. I've been having more trouble dodging in mhw compared to previous games.
Wow, good job! This video is really useful, thx!
Never seen this channel before, this is some good shit. Good job guys!
