When you sit down and have belly rolls, are these rolls subcutaneous fat since you can pinch it? Or do you only measure the pinching method standing up?
That is visceral fat, not subcutaneous. Your fat % can be lowered by decreasing your caloric intake and gaining muscle (this will help keep fat of since muscle burns more calories). Calorice intake can be lowered by increasing the amounts of fiber, high-quality protein and clean foods. Drinking water helps you to stay full, your body has a hard time differentiating hunger and thirst signals, so if you think your hungry drink a big glass of water wait a few minutes and see if you still need food.
To avoid belly fat, what you need to control is insulin spike. To keep it as minimum as possible is the key. To achieve it, you need to avoid refined carbs, sugar (hidden sugar is more dangerous like in cold drinks), alcohol etc (though fructose in sugar and alcohol doesn’t increase insulin spike directly but it has indirect mechanism which is more dangerous)and need to increase fiber foods, especially vegetables. Need to do exercise properly. Need to sleep properly and to keep stress under control. In addition, cut unhealthy fat with junk food, instead, intake healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil, omega 3 etc. Do fasting at least once a week. Try to have some metabolism boosting herbs like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon etc. Keep patient since it’s very difficult and needs time to burn fat.
TBH.....I really hate both visceral and subcutaneous fat. Both are bloody ugly if you have excessive amount. Subcutaneous is damn bloody uncomfortable to have around the waist. The feeling of that fat-fold when you pinch them with your fingers is enough to make me grab a layer of fat from any animal and smashing them to a pulp with my heart's content with a baseball bat! Deficit diet is a hit and miss. However intermittent fasting which I've tried and still do works for me. I just need to fix the amount of carbs and sucrose intake. It's the added sugar that's really the real enemy. ON SAYING THAT.......I really really really hate sucrose! They say alcohol and drugs are addiction, but you hardly hear any campaign of sugar or sucrose being an addiction.
Did you ever notice that fat can be compared with an armor piece?, if somebody was to punch you, the fat will absorb the punch and make it feel lighter and protect you from injuries just like an armor piece would protect you from any hits with a medieval weapon.
Thank you Dr Sadeghi! I suffer from 'pod belly' and currently taking measures to address the issue that has impacted greatly on my well-being. I've always wondered which of the two is more my issue and from your easy to understand description it is subcutaneous. You're simple recommendations revealed to me one aspect that I had not considered, checking hormone levels. Thank you again for this clear and simple clip about fat. From New Zealand :) Patrick
Sumo wrestlers are almost entirely subcutaneous fat which explains why they rarely suffer from problems commonly associated with obesity such as diabetes, heart disease and slowed hormone production.
subcutaneous fat is not dangerous at all, sumo wrestlers have a ton of it and they are very healthy. Visceral fat however is very dangerous. you can get rid of both of them by just dieting and eating low calories preferably on a vegetarian or vegan diet
Is that really true about subcutaneous fat? Have a legitimate reference? Most of the health risks seem to be from visceral fat. Though I'd like a reliable resource to actually examine this. I have a personal stake in this as I have a big belly I really need to reduce, though also struggling with alcoholism and mental illness. It would be great to get back to my former glory. Though I guess I could settle for a sumo body, it just means I'll need to do a lot of intense exercise.
Sumo wreslters are NOT healthy at all. In fact Japan's own sumo wrestling association recognizes lower life span and health risks for sumo wresters. This is a fact without exception. They also have abundance of both types of fat. And excess amounts of subcutaneous fat is also not healthy
Subcutaneous is not harmless. It does have health risks associated with it. Sumo wrestlers are not healthy. Doesn't matter if you have a shit ton of muscle, it is not healthy for your body to be carrying around that much weight. You BMI should not hit morbid obesity
First off, Thank you for your video! My question: Is subcutaneous fat level low bad if you are bmi and workout of an athlete? For instance- I have 16-17% body fat typically… my subcutaneous fat is 15.2%. I read normal is 20% and over for a woman in her 20’s. Although all my other measurements are in the very healthy range. I workout regularly and eat very well, supplements, and super healthy blood tests. Does this mean I am advanced aging or is there just not enough info on athletic bodies and subcutaneous fat? Sincerely, Someone who really just wants to take good care of herself and not make the aging mistakes my family did.
+Shanelle De Almeida that is a very good question. Ideally, you should have a body fat percentage less than 25%. TO be considered in the athletic range, you should be less than 20%. Usually, if you are in the ideal range of body fat percentage, you would naturally have very little visceral fat. Once you go above 25% body fat, there is a high likelihood of accumulating a bit of visceral fat inside the abdomen. This is variable in different people. Whereas most women in the above age range tend to gain weight in the hips and thighs, some tend to gain inside the abdomen, which is unhealthy. This may have something to do with hormonal imbalances, dietary choices, and genetics.I hope that helps!
Angie Sadeghi MD my belly hang, soft and jiggly. I gain weight all over and my biggest area is my upper/stomach. I'm 5'3 feet and need/ want to lose 100lbs. Will my stomach area become excess skin? I wish my 600lbs life:tight skin and most of them stomach skin hang but they are bigger then me.
Hi Dr . Sadeghi, I am suffering from getting fat although I cut back on carbs, refined sugars,.could you please order some blood chemistry tests to see if the cause if from hormonal imbalance? Thanks
here is my diet; i am 57 year old man, i eat 16 to 20 eggs with yolks a week, butter, coconut oil, fatty meats (ground beef with 27% fat, i do not drain the fat, i consume all the fat as well) so perhaps i get about over 30 or more grams of saturated fat a day, i consume a fair share of fruits and vegetables, i do not drink sugary beverages and minimize foods made with table sugar (pies, cakes, cookies etc...). So far i have no problems eating this way. i am 6'1" and weigh 157 pounds. In the past when i was a big soda drinker i had a lot of visceral fat.
Edd 96 i like my size. Besides i do work out with weight training. My look is a lean muscular look. Who says that being heavy muscular means better health? I know of some body builders who died of heart attacks. I like my size and it helps me in the sex department. I get hard very easy even just by thinking about sex. Not bad for a 58 y/o eh? Like i said i am lean muscular with broad shoulders and flat six pack tummy.
I tend to eat when I'm hungry and serving sizes are unrealistic. One can might contain 3 1/5 servings per can. How ridiculous is that. How do you measure out 1/3 of a can accurately?
Hello, This is Tiffany, Dr. Angie's social media assistant. You can typically tell if you have excess fat if you are not exercising regularly, do not weight train, &/or do not eat a predominantly WFPB diet and your body fat percentage or BMI are outside of normal range. We hope this feedback help you!
To lose subcutaneous belly fat, eat right, diet and balance your hormones. And most importantly EXERCISE. Remember, we become fat when we eat more calories than we burn, so keep track of caloric intake with the app: MyFitnessPal Caloric intake > Caloric loss = Weight gain Caloric intake < Caloric loss = Weight loss Caloric intake = Caloric loss = Steady weight
Thank you for heading straight into the topic.
Very well presented and to the point. Thank you for such a explanation of these types of fats.
An excellent and informative presentation.
+Eye Gel Thank you for the feedback...I appreciate it.
Thank you Dr Angei. Very informative, now I know what to do to burn my belly fat.
Thanks Dr. Sadeghi! Great info!

You prolly need some additional medical assistance tho as well....such as a psychiatric evaluation, etc.

i lost mine on ketogenic diet , i got it on diet full of veggies and bread occasionally eating meat , so high carb diet won't help you

low carbohydrate diets naturally lower your food intake.

could you please list the ideal percentages of visceral, subcutaneous fat for women aged 29-35?
