I was already so hook up by this game back in the day, but, after I met this character in New Austin, I couldn't stop theorizing who he was and what all these interactions with him means. We never had an official answer from Rockstar and that's one of the best thing imo. I believe he's death himself or maybe the devil, putting John's morality into test, trying to corrupt him
All stranger missions in RDR(2) give you honor or dishonor points, shaping your morality. All The Strange Man does is test your morality, so I think there's a reason as to why they're called STRANGER missions.

Anyone remember when UA-cam was full of myths and legends about video games? I remember watching so many about old rockstar games, rockstar just knows how to make an atmosphere that every player can get into and enjoy. And glitches and other things lead to myths, the only thing is rdr1 there was some actual truth to the myths as most of them were glitches you could encounter in the wild while playing, like the bird people, donkey lady, and man bear pig, those were skins and npc behaviors that somehow were glitched very badly and combined those skins together to make abomination monster looking things that were actually unsettling.
What still throws me for a loop is when he says "I hope my boy turns out just like you." Either he is death and death has a son, or he is the devil hinting to the anti-christ.
The angle at which he's death always makes me wonder if he has respect for God. Regardless of which Abrahamic religion you subscribe to one thing is constant and that is he's against humans and is the embodiment of sin. The thing is anyone with such hubris must also think highly of a stubborn foe.
If you notice after this John fires three shots at death cementing his, uncle's, and Abigail's deaths and tries to fire a fourth that would have guaranteed Jack's early death as well. There's some supernatural elements in rdr and rdr2 so I like to think John's gun was so loyal he couldn't allow John to make a mistake like that and jammed before he could cement the death of his own child
it’s not rare, it’s not a main mission either, you meet him first on that hill between McFarlanes ranch and armadillo this side misson has 3 parts and it shows up depending how far into the story you are
"I hope my boy turns out just like you" is such a good line when you consider how many people John has killed, and the stranger literally being death- ofc he'd want someone like John, the stranger said he was an accountant and John keeps him busy
The dialogue is outstanding. They didn't have to go the extra mile and write it so well but it's one of many things that make this game and RDR 2 both masterpieces.
People who played Red Dead 2 first will never understand… John was OUR Arthur Morgan. Before the second game, there was no information detailing how big the van der linde gang really was, giving us original players the impression that John was one of Dutches most senior members of the gang. That alone makes John more special in my eyes. I liked RD2, but I didn’t like how they portrayed John as a junior gang member that was always needing rescued. He should have been every bit as stone cold as Arthur, no question about it. I would have preferred to be able to do a character switch between John and Arthur, a mechanic similar to the one found in GTA5.
Boss I don’t think jack knew and described the gruesome details of the blackwater massacre or all the horrible things his dad did lol. I also don’t think a time traveller would be immortal
I personally think john recognises the strange man because of his connection with death, having killed and nearly died more times than he can count. I wouldnt be surprised if john dreams about the strange man and thats how he recognises him, he just cant put 2 and 2 together.
In blackwater they killed his wife, somehow Arthur was suppose to be there to help prevent this, it’s why everybody involved in blackwater died shortly after and the one who was suppose to prevent it got sick, and yes John survived the longest only to finish the rest off, the gang except Sadie, Charles, and jack all died
killed whose wife? andbi think you forgot a few survivors from the gang. mr Pearson also lived. as well as Tilly. we dont get an answer as to what happened to Mary Beth and Karen but i imagine we would have heard if they died. but it is possible they died so i wont count them. also Bill and Javier who John kills much later. but they do survive the gang breaking up in Arthurs story.

I have a theory. Everybody knows now that this strange man is Death himself while he said to John he is a kind of an "accountant". But I guess, this "profession" has a deeper meaning to him. He could be a symbolic representation of a judge or balancer who looks after the main character and watches over his actions. I mean, he counts sins of people and he counts John's good and bad deeds. The main purpose of this "strange man" here was to help John to balace himself, come to terms with his sins and actions and make as much good things as he could in the end. That's why this Accountant gave hints to John that someone needs his his help or assistance so John could have a chance in the afterlife and help him realize and take responsibility for his actions and transgressions. He wanted John to find his REDEMPTION in the end. Please, note that John during plot always coldly and ironically states that he is a doomed person and if the hell exists, he will get there as others after he dies. So this Accountant wanted John to reassess his doings. In RDR2 Death does not appear before Arthur and doesn't instruct him, yes, but he gradually appears in the picture hinting that he will come soon. To be honest, he doesn't need to appear before Arthur as Arthur reassessed his doings himself and he was remorseful of his blind outlaw life. He saved himself. But John is another case. He understands he cannot be saved, he will burn in hell as others. I mean, John knows that he did bad things but he is not embarassed or remorseful, he is good with all deeds and he just wants to leave a peaceful life with his wife and son before he gets to hell. This is what Death wants change. It offers him salvation by helping people in trouble. P.S. As one reviewer said that this Accountant appears in the mirror right behind John's back when we play as John in the end of the game. I think, this symbolizes that Death is coming to John, breathing in the back of his head. From this moment, the clock started ticking. The agents are coming after him.
For people that keep saying he Trelawny he isn’t, Trelawny is still alive in the prison and it was said that the strange man is indeed death himself, considering fealty has a lot of forms this can be one.
They included this guy’s house in the swampy area of the map in RDR2. Items in the house change depending on your decisions throughout the game. Your honor level is represented in the house. John runs into this guy through his reflection in the epilogue.

He is Cane, the first murderer, marked by God to walk the earth eternally. When he references his son, he is referring to murderers.
That last line is so fire. The dialogue and voice acting for these games is incredible.

John has murdered so many people that it is either he visualized his conscience or he is talking to the actual grim reaper. He has killed so many people
He is basically giving the grim reaper a reason to be around John which is why he “admires” John, because he himself might as well be the grim reaper with how everywhere he goes death follows.

For those who dont know,if you go to the general store in armadillo you will see a portrait of the strange man and there will be a dialogue between john and the cashier,and the cashier says that someone gave him the portait,and john says the the strange man looks familiar,probably he was thinking of Trelawny
Strange man is just an interesting Npc... The right mix between being just a rdm dude and super interesting... He made me curious... I wanted to meet him in rdr2 but he wasn't there (not physically at least) or I didn't found him... I really wanted to speak with him again

I was already so hook up by this game back in the day, but, after I met this character in New Austin, I couldn't stop theorizing who he was and what all these interactions with him means. We never had an official answer from Rockstar and that's one of the best thing imo. I believe he's death himself or maybe the devil, putting John's morality into test, trying to corrupt him

All stranger missions in RDR(2) give you honor or dishonor points, shaping your morality. All The Strange Man does is test your morality, so I think there's a reason as to why they're called STRANGER missions.

Anyone remember when UA-cam was full of myths and legends about video games? I remember watching so many about old rockstar games, rockstar just knows how to make an atmosphere that every player can get into and enjoy. And glitches and other things lead to myths, the only thing is rdr1 there was some actual truth to the myths as most of them were glitches you could encounter in the wild while playing, like the bird people, donkey lady, and man bear pig, those were skins and npc behaviors that somehow were glitched very badly and combined those skins together to make abomination monster looking things that were actually unsettling.
What still throws me for a loop is when he says "I hope my boy turns out just like you." Either he is death and death has a son, or he is the devil hinting to the anti-christ.
The angle at which he's death always makes me wonder if he has respect for God. Regardless of which Abrahamic religion you subscribe to one thing is constant and that is he's against humans and is the embodiment of sin. The thing is anyone with such hubris must also think highly of a stubborn foe.
In my mind, that line kinda cemented that he’s the devil. There’s that and then the playful way he talks to John.
If you notice after this John fires three shots at death cementing his, uncle's, and Abigail's deaths and tries to fire a fourth that would have guaranteed Jack's early death as well.
There's some supernatural elements in rdr and rdr2 so I like to think John's gun was so loyal he couldn't allow John to make a mistake like that and jammed before he could cement the death of his own child

The dialogue is outstanding. They didn't have to go the extra mile and write it so well but it's one of many things that make this game and RDR 2 both masterpieces.

Replaying this again right now. this game holds up so well. It felt good going back as this was my original red dead first love.
People who played Red Dead 2 first will never understand… John was OUR Arthur Morgan. Before the second game, there was no information detailing how big the van der linde gang really was, giving us original players the impression that John was one of Dutches most senior members of the gang. That alone makes John more special in my eyes. I liked RD2, but I didn’t like how they portrayed John as a junior gang member that was always needing rescued. He should have been every bit as stone cold as Arthur, no question about it. I would have preferred to be able to do a character switch between John and Arthur, a mechanic similar to the one found in GTA5.
I just realized that the Nuevo pareso is the outfit you get in rd2 story mode is you buy the ultimate addition

I personally think john recognises the strange man because of his connection with death, having killed and nearly died more times than he can count. I wouldnt be surprised if john dreams about the strange man and thats how he recognises him, he just cant put 2 and 2 together.

In blackwater they killed his wife, somehow Arthur was suppose to be there to help prevent this, it’s why everybody involved in blackwater died shortly after and the one who was suppose to prevent it got sick, and yes John survived the longest only to finish the rest off, the gang except Sadie, Charles, and jack all died
killed whose wife? andbi think you forgot a few survivors from the gang. mr Pearson also lived. as well as Tilly. we dont get an answer as to what happened to Mary Beth and Karen but i imagine we would have heard if they died. but it is possible they died so i wont count them. also Bill and Javier who John kills much later. but they do survive the gang breaking up in Arthurs story.

I have a theory. Everybody knows now that this strange man is Death himself while he said to John he is a kind of an "accountant". But I guess, this "profession" has a deeper meaning to him.
He could be a symbolic representation of a judge or balancer who looks after the main character and watches over his actions. I mean, he counts sins of people and he counts John's good and bad deeds. The main purpose of this "strange man" here was to help John to balace himself, come to terms with his sins and actions and make as much good things as he could in the end. That's why this Accountant gave hints to John that someone needs his his help or assistance so John could have a chance in the afterlife and help him realize and take responsibility for his actions and transgressions. He wanted John to find his REDEMPTION in the end.
Please, note that John during plot always coldly and ironically states that he is a doomed person and if the hell exists, he will get there as others after he dies. So this Accountant wanted John to reassess his doings.
In RDR2 Death does not appear before Arthur and doesn't instruct him, yes, but he gradually appears in the picture hinting that he will come soon. To be honest, he doesn't need to appear before Arthur as Arthur reassessed his doings himself and he was remorseful of his blind outlaw life. He saved himself. But John is another case. He understands he cannot be saved, he will burn in hell as others. I mean, John knows that he did bad things but he is not embarassed or remorseful, he is good with all deeds and he just wants to leave a peaceful life with his wife and son before he gets to hell. This is what Death wants change. It offers him salvation by helping people in trouble.
P.S. As one reviewer said that this Accountant appears in the mirror right behind John's back when we play as John in the end of the game. I think, this symbolizes that Death is coming to John, breathing in the back of his head. From this moment, the clock started ticking. The agents are coming after him.

For people that keep saying he Trelawny he isn’t, Trelawny is still alive in the prison and it was said that the strange man is indeed death himself, considering fealty has a lot of forms this can be one.

They included this guy’s house in the swampy area of the map in RDR2. Items in the house change depending on your decisions throughout the game. Your honor level is represented in the house. John runs into this guy through his reflection in the epilogue.
