Is Uncle Red Harlow? - Red Dead Redemption 2

- This theory has always sounded ludicrous to me, however today we are actually going to be entertaining the idea that Red Dead Redemption 2's character, Uncle, could be Red Dead Revolver protagonist, Red Harlow.
Please expect a dissatisfying answer.

I think you shouldn't assume that uncle was born. There is plenty of evidence that shows uncle is an immortal primordial force of nature.
True
Yeah he's immortal except for that pesky "dying at the end of rdr1" incident
@@michaeldebidart that’s just Pinkerton propaganda
@@michaeldebidart immortal =/= invincible
The primordial force that chose Uncle is known only by one name: Lumbago.
I’ve always loved the theory that Revolver is a version of true events that did happen to him, but exaggerated by Uncle to the point of ridiculousness like all his stories. The broad strokes happened, but not the insane shit.
I feel like this is the strongest explaination that still adds to Uncle as a character.
The only problem is the timeline really. Uncles far too old
@@ACLA23 Doesn’t matter, it’s been turned into legend due to his own exaggeration and the telephone game being played at those campfires, or even because Revolver is the fictionalized versions of the events told to John Marston by Uncle when he was still a kid. The half remembered exaggerations of an old drunk told to a child, remembered a decade or more later as the basis for a fiction book that was “inspired” by those events. We know RDR as a whole exists within GTA as a series of books by the “real” John already.
@@ElectricheadPt1 it would actually matter because why would you try to tell a story about yourself and exaggerate it.
That's like me telling a story when I was 15 but say I was actually 22 years old.
@@Detahramet I beg to differ. Uncle never narrates stories that are remotely similar to Red Dead Revolver's narrative, so if he never did, then how can you be so sure of it happening anyway?
I could see Uncle being a Civil War Vet. I feel that he is much older than we realize. Could be how he got his nickname, especially if he was an older service member in the unit. Due to the trauma of the war he drops his name because that part of him died on the battlefield and adopted “Uncle” to remind himself of his fallen brothers and he doesn’t want to talk about his past because he just wants to forget (also to avoid the political fallout if a person he is talking to fought for the opposite side of the war). This could also explain his “lazy” attitude in Rdr1, he isn’t lazy but actually much older than we once thought. It would also give him a redemption line at the end of Rdr1 trying to right the wrongs he committed during the war.
This is a much better idea than the absolutely stupid ones like the one the video is based upon.
@@SpeedDemon55 somedays I wake up, and I'm happy. Then I remember that people like you exist, and that changes my mood right quickly.
That may he partially true. He may have been in the service with Dutch's father in the war. Brothers in arms. That maybe how he got the name uncle. Dutch called him uncle.
@@Nictona Now that I can believe.
Uncle would be 15 at the end of the war
"I'm not lazy. I just don't like working. There's a difference" ~ Uncle
What a wise man he is...
Recently I was looking up on your videos and couldn’t find one on why Van Horn feels so creepy, strange and hostile. Please do one!
uncle isn't red harlow, Fizhy actually is and he's just trying to draw attention off of himself
Fuark you got me
Fizhy is Uncle
The mystery has finally been solved!?!!!!?!?!??
I thought Fizhy was Gavin?
Half the video explains that info in the game is more of an exaggeration of popular stories and not a extreme accurate info source and yet you still want to take it as a extreme accurate info source
Uncle was always the main character but the lumbago was hiding his true strength
To me, Uncle is the direct antithesis to Jim "Boy" Calloway in the game - you can tell Calloway's exploits were completely embellished and even outright made up as we progress through his story, riding the notoriety coattails of real gunslingers and killers. I believe Uncle to be the opposite - no hes not Red Harlow but i believe he probably fought in the last year or two of the civil war (a lot of kids joined at 14-15) and may have even known or met Red Harlow at some point. The point is, I believe that at some point in his past, Uncle has a lot of history and experience that actually happened that *should* have been the focus of a book like the one that was written about Calloway and his fake accomplishments.
This would be true if Uncle was actually a good shooter but in any mission he’s involved in he’s not seen doing anything extraordinary, he’s just supplying support fire but rarely hits anyone. Uncle also embellishes his past like his Africa story and all the other times Arthur called him out on his bs. Even in red dead 1 when he fights against army boys he gets shot almost immediately
i dont want a 3rd red dead redemption (at least not with the gang we know) but i gotta be honest a spin off following uncle as a young gun slinger/bounty hunter would be interesting
They already made that game... It's called Red Dead revolver. 😅
Red dead revolver 2
red dead revolver is folklore in the red dead universe. but bro whatever floats your boat lol
I like to think the reason uncle has no hand scarring is just due to natural healing, assuming Uncle is around the age of 60-65 in rdr2, and somewhere in his 80s in rdr1, red harlow wouldve had to have been born in the 1830s to 1840s. Since rdr2 takes place in 1899, and in 1911, rdr1's time frame, uncle would be in his 80s if he WAS born in the 1830s. So we can assume Uncle/Red Harlow was born in 1831. And rdr would take place in the 1850s-early 1860s. This would add up for Uncle not having much scarring, since the scars would have to have been caused a bit before 1850. Scar wounds due heal over time, becoming flatter and duller until they're essentially non-visible. So a mininum of 49ish years should def work
Red dead revolver could just be one of Jack's books.
I remember using the Red Harlow skin for the first game’s online mode.
Whether or not he’s uncle, he is kind of in the first game. 😋
I also like to think Red’s stories are romanticized tales of Uncles past he wants to run away from like the rest of the gang wants to run away from their problems.
I also feel the same way about RDR1&2 being romanticized tales from Jack’s perspective after he becomes a writer. All of it is mostly head-canon, but it’s is just fun to think of it that way.
The description of Harlow at 3:55 to me sounds like he’s describing Jack’s journey
I imagine they didn’t send the army after John, but they did it instead because Uncle was there
In my opinion, Uncle is Red Harlow. He dies helping John’s family survive so Jack doesn't have to grow up the way he did. Sadly, like Arthur, John, and Abigail wanted for Jack, didn't happen. Jack went for revenge, Like John and Red Harlow before him
Revenge to Redemption… “Revenge is a fool’s game.”
in my opinion halo and mario are in the same universe because its a dream by snake from metal gears solid
Red Harlow is not Uncle.
@@frankcastle8397why you say that
@@Drexzzz4 Because Uncle ain’t nothing like Red. Red was not a criminal.
I think of Uncle fondly. His final acts will always endear him to me.
Personally I don't think he really is Red because the age doesn't make sense.
But I can't deny that Uncle past is similar to Reds
The age could easily be Uncle mis-remembering, or due to his alcoholism, or simply something exaggerated in Red Dead Revolver.
@@RaptorJesus I don't think he would exaggerate his age because that wouldn't make sense.
@@NotRJ001 No, no. Not Uncle exaggerating. Those retelling the story doing so.
@@RaptorJesus I mean Red Harlow is mentioned to be alive in RDR1 in a random encounter when you sit around a camp fire.
@RaptorJesus Red Harlow's age is never brought up in the stories told throughout both games, you are making that part up.
He’s gone by many names… red Harlow, uncle, gavin and the grim reaper in his Sunday best being just a few of those names…
I really think it just makes too much narrative sense for Uncle to be Red. He's been in both the games, we know his parents died young, he's one of the few in the gang members we don't know the past of, we know some version of Red exists, Uncle clearly is a capable and life long gunslinger, and he's clearly got more going on than just being an old drunkard. It also works narratively chronologically. Red goes a raging warpath of vengence, Red grows old and buries his path and goes on the run from his past, goes by Uncle and joins gangs to help keep running, runs into our gang and rdr2 happens, stays with John, stops running and fights as long as he can until he can't. That is a story of revenge, running, and redemption. A story good enough for one of my favorite side characters in fiction
Perhaps RDR2 is the AU where Red Harlow's parents died differently, and his life was incredibly different
I like the idea that red dead revolver is a story or one of the movies you can see in game
Just found an interaction at horseshoe camp in the morning where uncle pulls down the butt flap of his pajamas to moon Swanson one morning. Took my 5th playthrough to see it.
Everyone knows that Uncle is just lumbago turned sentient
Love your videos ! Thank you for posting red dead content pretty regularly.
i love how red dead revolver takes place in an entirely different universe and in the rdr1&2 universe it’s just a story, and nothing more
I find it hard to believe red harlow would walk around without guns, uncle never has a gun even when he ventures into town
My head cannon goes like this: Red Harlow did really exist in RDR and was really a legendary gunslinger and bounty hunter, on the level of Arthur and John. Dime Novels and endless upon endless retellings of the tale distorted it into the cartoonish spaghetti western we see in the actual Red Dead Revolver game.
In my heart I want landon rickets or uncle to be Red Harlow.
But in my brain I know that Red Harlow is actually John Marston. Rockstar initially intended to make red dead redemption as a sequel to revolver, however partway through development the plans changed and Red evolved into John. This is why their designs are so similar, down to the facial scars and hat worn by each character.
Red is John
so, Red harlow in the Red Dead universe is pretty much the same as our historical Daniel Boone, who WAS a real historical figure, but imperfectly remembered and a legend in his own lifetime, which made for some pretty tall tales of his life.
I feel the mission line with the guy writing the book about Jim Boy Calloway is supposed to be a jab at Red Dead Revolver. Uncle was Red Harlow, but after getting his revenge his life spiraled and he became a drunk. Someone probably wrote a book about drunk Uncles crazy tales, like the guy with a canon for a hand.
Think the great Captain Jack Sparrow who roped sea turtles with his back hair. While the real Jack just lay on the beach getting drunk until some smugglers came by and he hitched a ride.
Following the events of Revolver, Harlow ulends up running a small posse consisting of Uncle and Ricketts. During this time out in the west, they collect bounties and root out local corruption. However something bad goes down at one point (probably involving the Jack Hall Gang) that leads to Harlow disappearing,Ricketts retiring, and Uncle being terribly beaten and ending up with severe Lumbago (and probably Gout) that basically inhibits his formerly legendary abilities with a firearm. Here he ends up turning to petty thievery until he shares a drink with Dutch and Hosea and is incorporated into the Van Der Linde Gang.
Or something.
Rdr4 a young uncle at the dawn of the cowboy age before the while the west was still actually wild and the map empty.
Uncle does have a scarred hand, the exact hand Red burned. When you play as John, and you're looking for Charles in Saint Denis, you'll go underneath the tunnel leading from the train station into the city. Uncle sports a raggedy Red Bandanna out of his left or right back pocket, I forget (The one Red Harlow used to cover his burned hand) if you take a picture, and freeze frame as you walk behind Uncle, look closely, you'll see a visibly scarred hand.
P.S. I saw another video on this. ohh, about a year or two ago, the evidence adds up spectacular. I don't believe anything can take me away from Uncle being Red Harlow.
Could be a stretch but, when you fiest go to Valentine with Uncle he tells Arthur that he used to be known and the one shot kid. In Red Dead Revolver, Red started as a kid and in one shot blew off a gang members arm with one shot and killed him while burning his hand in the process.
it makes sense in the logic of red dead, really Landen Rickets is the only gunslinger aside from Black Belle we see who seems to make out alright in the end, 80 percent of the "legendary outlaws" we see in red dead, is generally either dead, or drunk, only waiting to be killed by Arthur, or John, who also (SPOILERS - die due to their gunslinging ways) almost as though the game tried to make a statement about the lack of glory with the life of an outlaw, their fore red harlow, after getting his vengeance, becoming disenfranchised with life, could likely turn to drinking and whoring, and etc, as a way to cope, and slowly, uncle was born. even the first game seems to indicate this with little jack, though given their is a book by a J Marston in the GTA games, i like to think jack put his guns away and became a writer, maybe the story of red dead revolver, is a fanciful retelling of some campfire stories uncle might have spouted, etc,
i have a theory that the man that takes Arthur to the doctors office when he collapses in saint denis from his TB, is actually Gavin cuz he looks very similar to Gavin’s friend and that is the only time we see that man.
The question isn’t if Red Harlow is Uncle. The question should be, is Red Harlow Batman?
what if red dead revolver is actually just a story who was told by uncle?
I remember in rdr1 jack talks about his book that is Guns story line and the steamboat the. Morning star was the name of the steamboat in that game too that was robbed massacred kinda crazy how they tied them together
RDR III - Red Harlow meets Dutch, gets lumbago and joins him as Uncle
A friend of mine convinced me that Red wasn’t a real person within the universe, he was folklore of the Wild West. People would share stories and then those stories would get passed on as a form of entertainment but then people would later pass it on as fact.
I can’t recall the arguments well enough to spell them out for you here. Uncle is not red, but I’d love to hear uncles back story.
Maybe the real uncle was the friends we made along the way
Isn't there a voice line from Uncle at some point in the RDR where he says to John before he rides off to kill someone 'Tell the devil Red Harlow sent you'
red harlow never had lumbago!! uncle can't be him!!
Uncle used the excuse that he had lumbago to get out of having to do much work. Even Arthur called him out on it and told him he was a compulsive liar.
@@melanievidec831i know, 'tis a joke
Red harlow is just wild west batman
Uncle still doesn’t have a name. We know very little of his background. I have a feeling he is either Red Harlow (although Rockstar debunked it) or a notorious gunslinger when he was young and hides his identity really well, or he might be Tacitus Kilgore. I hope we get to know him more in the next Red Dead series.
I think that uncle is a the red dead redemption version of red harlow maybe not the one from revolver but possibly this universes version of red harlow
I feel like if you analyze Uncle from Rdr1 it lines up better. In that game he has a wrap around his right hand and he’s a lot more vague. I think when 1 was a big success, they decided on a sequel, and 2 came around, they just decided to make him his own character.
So we’re going to ignore that he’s a western Batman? “Parents died in front of him and he uses that pain to become a better man and reek vengeance” dude is literally batman
Man that tension between Dutch and Uncle was POWERFUL first time I saw it.
I loved this dissection of the topic, if however you decide to revisit it Fizhy, I'd like you to consider some theories I've found online (and expanded on).
Theory 1:
The first out of the two theories is one I saw on a thread through the red dead wiki suggesting that Red Harlow could be Landon Ricketts. There are three main pieces of evidence that contribute to the theory. The first is that if Red was born around 1860, but the events of Red Dead Redemption 1, he would be roughly 50-55, whilst most people would pick Ricketts as maybe a 60-65 year old, its important to consider that even Hosea Matthews is put at around 55 years old. The second piece of evidence which I personally find really interesting is that Ricketts is one of the only 5 people in the Red Dead universe (or universes depending on if revolver and redemption are same universe) who are; John, Jack, Arthur, Red, and Landon Ricketts. The final piece of evidence is that during one of the camp encounters in red dead 1, its mentioned that he fought the Mexican army, while this could be in reference to the army of renegades formed by general Diego, its not an immensely significant stretch to suggest that perhaps the man at the camp was referencing how Landon Ricketts fights the with the Mexican people against their army. To put it on a timeline, Red was born in 1860, the events of Red Dead Revolver take place in 1880, then theres a 10 year period between 1890-1900, when perhaps Red moved from New Austin (where Revolver would've partly taken place if it is the same universe) to a different state further North to escape Red's reputation. Then in the year 1899 after the involvement in the blackwater massacre he moved to Chuparosa where he got involved with the Mexican rebellion and then perhaps after his 14 year involvement with the war, he made a name for fighting the Mexican army. The only major flaw with this idea is that if he did move from New Austin and changed his name, people probably wouldn't recognise Landon as Red. Not video worthy but idk its just fun to tangent🤷♂
Theory 2:
This is my favourite of the two theories, the idea is that Red Dead Revolver is the tale of John and Jack Marston with some slight twists and changes because of how Jack saw everything as he was younger (and also to make it a bit more friendly for the public). Perhaps the book in GTAV labelled "Red Dead" is not in fact Red Dead Redemption as we've thought for a while, but instead Red dead Revolver. The more you think about it the more it becomes potentially plausible. The first mention of Red Harlow in the redemption universe is in 1907 (the epilogue of rdr2), at this time Jack is 12, and while a 12 year old can't create actual literature he might've been able to tell his tale to people or make an ongoing series about his stories, or even maybe small features in a news paper. When you start to see the story of Red Dead thing begin to make a lot of sense, the story of Revolver (at least I believe) could be an amalgamation of the events throughout rdr1, Red's parents being killed by a government soldier (Jack's parents being killed by a government agent), Red working with Sheriff Bartlett in a new town (John working with Leigh Johnson in the new town of Armadillo), Red hunting criminals in Mexico, (John hunting Javier and Williamson in Mexico), Red fighting kinda the Mexican army, (John hunting the Mexican army). As well as similarities between certain characters like Annie Stokes and Bonnie MacFarlane (then again same goes for Sadie Adler so I'm not too sure). Finally the story concludes with Red rushing into the mansion and killing the governor (avenging his father). Not entirely dissimilar to how Jack avenged John, however to save the audience from the brutality its possible that Jack chose for a slightly more audience friendly ending to make it a more uplifting tale.
Both theories aren't video worthy and do have their holes but I think they're both worth thinking about at least
From some of the points you make in this video I've starting to think that Red Harlow is just a self insert of a campfire story uncle came up with. Maybe in a way to cope with his younger days or just to make them more interesting.
Just like how spiderman is PART of our universe but not actually IN our universe.
No mention of the abandoned far in new austin south of armadillo? It looks a lot like red harlow farm from revolver
Yall are wrong, Uncle is clearly Commander Shepard.
At the end of ME3, that explosion didn't destroy his body, but transported him to 1870s America back on planet earth.
The time travel aged him up a bit, but he was overall alright. After years of trying to go back, Shepard decided to accept his new life, and to adopt a more relaxed lifestyle.
He got into drinking, put on some weight, and joined the Van Der Linde gang, becoming everyone's favorite lazy uncle, Uncle.
By the way, YES this means BroShep is the canonical version of Commander Shepard, deal with it
Theres a house in the red dead universe just outside of armadillo on the way to fort mercer. It is wayyy to alike to that of Red Harlow's
You can also find red's hat in game
I bet the revolver was laced with LUMBAGO and that’s why Uncle stopped
I wonder if for RDR3 more will be explained. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised if maybe we play as a younger Uncle.
Using a gun with high levels of proficiency is a perishable skill if you go just 4 or 5 years without using or firing one you'll see that you are far from what you were.
The old man who at one point was in the congo and was worshipped by the natives there, I'm not kidding that's in the game.
What if both directions are true. What if, Uncle dreamed up Red Harlow, like thats who he would love to be if it wasnt for his lumbago (Laziness). A story he tells strangers at the bar, or people like Arthur who might eat up such a story although Arthur isnt the most gullible, Uncle has always been an elder figure in Arthurs life,, being far less active in the gang, in a bid to feel less useless perhaps, Uncle did only tell the one shot kid story when he and Arthur were alone. What if it has been Uncle this whole time, creating some kind of myth, a legend, a story hes been telling up and down the country as he travels with the gang? What if thats how Uncle got into the gang in the first place, what if he was spinning this yarn about being Red Harlow when Dutch and Hosea found him? They wouldve thought that a legend of a gunslinger, retired or not would be good for the gang with the experience he might bring etc. To me in my head this makes a lot of sense, because Uncle does rely heavily on his friendly nature, good jokes, stories and what not to get people to like him, without those things, he wouldnt be in the gang
I see it like this: if Red Dead Revolver is not canon but there are clearly mentions of Red Harlow in Red Dead Redemption, we can say that Uncle is simply a Red Harlow with another story, similar with many similarities but ultimately different, it doesn't make Needless to say, Revolver is a romanticized version, it's just another version and that's it.
To my knowledge red harlow is a legend in rdr universe and is talked about
real RockStar Fans would realize Trevor's Mom in the Bully (2006) Intro
Loved this one your so good at these videos bro ❤ I enjoy the red dead content and how good the lore is.
Honestly, I think Red Hollow is the rdr & rdr2 version of Pacos Bill, Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunnion, or Davey Crockett.
Revolver happened just not the way that revolver says remember it's from the sheriff's point-of-view so obviously he doesn't know exactly what happened so he's probably going to exaggerate and get a bunch of stuff wrong
18:08 Lol that head shake.
Short answer: yes
Long answer: hell yes
I’ve got a feeling uncle was left deliberately ambiguous in rdr2 because they’re setting him up as the protagonist in rdr3
Always look foward to one of your videos!
The lumbago nerfed uncle
I believe Jack is Red Harlow. Maybe he also took inspiration from stories told by Uncle too
They legit used Reds chracter model for john🤣 they had no intention of ever acknowledging that game’s existence
Honestly, if anyone in the gang is Red Harlow it would either be Dutch or Hosea.
I like to head canon that Red Harlow IS Uncle, but the story itself is the version Uncle told people. He was a bounty hunter and he was decent with a gun, but his exaggerated tales at bars spread and caught people's attention and became a legend.
I guess it boils down to a couple questions here. Did Rockstar intend for there to be a connection between Red Harlow and Uncle (almost certainly not), can you establish enough parallels for that to work in your headcannon (I think so), and will Rockstar eventually revisit the Red Dead series and retcon Uncle to be Red (probably not to both).
I do like the idea a lot if only because Uncle's presence in the gang is never adequately explained. In a group like that everyone has to pull together, you can't have dead weight eating your food and using your supplies during a lean winter. Uncle obviously did something to earn his spot in spite of his current attitude towards work, Dutch and Hosea have some level of respect for him to keep him around for so long.
And what did Reverend or Lenny ever did to stay in the gang? Dutch just picks vulnerable people because he can use them to feed his own ego, he sees himself as a king with his knights. There's your explanation.
@@KC.45 They both went out on missions, fought, brought in money/resources, and were fiercely loyal to Dutch. Uncle does none of those things at any point, he was a mouth to feed that brought in nothing.
Ik I’m late but Imagine if rd3 is about uncle as a young adult?
Dutch got downright menacing to Uncle and Uncle laughed it off.
My theory is John marston is just red harlow. This sounds like a joke but I actually think this. when making rdr1 rockstar probably used some of red's design for john, which is why they have similar scars
So cool that uncle is Red Harlow
I knew when I first played the Red Dead redemption and he gives it away in rdr2 when he tells Arthur in his younger days that he was known as one shot kid an Red Harlow was known as the the one shot kid think about it only true Red Dead fans that have played all Red Dead games starting with the Red Dead revolver and beating them 100% complete know the truth.
Feel like if anything Red is like john Marston's biological relative possibly father or uncle, I've always thought they looked similar
I believe he is. Same scar, same red kerchief, similar origin story.
He's Red Harlow to me, I hear lore I think is interesting and I make it a part of my personal cannon
Then keep it to yourself.
@@KC.45 I am allowed to express my opinion
Personally, I think it'd be pretty cool if it was implied in some way or another that Uncle once rode deep with Landon Rickett's & his gang.
Uncle will always be red Harlow in my head canon
There is overthinking and then there is this. Not everything is a special character reference or easter egg guys.
If Revolver is a different universe, the scars shouldn’t be considered when disproving this theory.
Also, since it is a different universe, any similarities are purely coincidental and therefore, none of Revolver should be used in proving/disproving this theory.
As it stands, Uncle isn’t the Red from Revolver, but could well be the Red spoken of around campfires
And the fact that red Harlow is half native
if red dead redemption and red dead revolver do take place in separate universe then why do npcs mention red harlow in red dead redemption 1 & 2?
I find videos like this odd. the devs flat out said "no" but people still make this stuff and give it click bait-y titles...
"Is Uncle Red Harlow?" = click bait. Your simple mind truly don't know what click bait means lmao

red dead redemption 3 should be about uncles youth
Red Harlow was like 20 in the game didn't everyone call him kid?
A good idea to go off of is the bald gene, uncle clearly has it, while red Harlows dad does not.
The thing is that red harlow might have faked his identity and age to become a bounty hunter at a younger age or to keep a low profile after the end of red dead revolver
Uncle is either teetering over the brink of senility in his old age, or he actually is Red Harlow and he's just running with the "old senile man" gimmick to cover his tracks.
Either way, it's brilliant.
Uncle couldn't protect his family on the farm in red dead revolver
