There is this cabin in rdr2 with a painting and some quotes of the Strange man. There's also a mirror. Every day you go back the panting gets more and more clear, it's a painting of the strange man himself. And in the mirror the man will stand behind you, getting closer each time. Representing how Death is etching closer and closer to Arthur Every passing day.

@@offlaner745 he’s death and he’s telling John he’ll be responsible for his own death because instead of leaving with Abigail and Jack, he walked through the barn doors instead
My own theory is that the Strange man and Old man Cassidy are some kind of angels, representing death and life, Cassidy tried to warn and advise about the consequences of some actions and doubts from Jhon and Arthur, a lot of people could have been save from death even themselves if only they understand what he meant. Most of the time you have to either find Cassidy or actually look for him to listen to his words meaning you're looking for redemption/understaning/Salvation, meanwhile the strange man activily looks for John, insidious and always talking about death and murders somehow related to Jhon and how John will pay for his actions, his last mission he stands where John is going to be bury.

Someone said he was Cain from the Cain and Able biblical story. And honestly that theory makes a lot of sense. When Cain killed his brother Abel god said he was forced to wander the earth and any harm dealt to Cain would be returned sevenfold. He can’t remember his name having been wandering for so long. John tries to shoot him 3 times and is shot a lot more, maybe 21 times, in his final showdown at the end of the game. The symbolism is so satisfying whether he’s Cain, God, grim reaper and the mystery makes it so it could be any of them.
Maybe Cain was appointed as death some point in his wandering as his punishment but knowing this and tiring of the death around him he tries to nudge people the other way
There’s no need, the redemption in red dead redemption has already been told, so unless they change the name or choose new characters for another redemption story there’s no reason for another John Marston, Arthur Morgan story.
