Gotta say it's refreshing to watch a modder show when things don't go as planned, whether that's firmware issues, bugs or just things not getting soldered quite right.
It’s important to me to come across as a typical hobbyist modder, because… that’s what I am lol. I just have the patience to translate written guides into videos. Thanks for watching!
Yeah. Seeing that one stubborn pin that refused to desolder made me feel better about the trouble I had with my NES. Most of the pins came clean first try, but there were a couple that just refused to clear no matter what. You always kind of know that it's never literally "just you" but to actually see someone else dealing with it is always a nice reassurance of that fact.
Thanks for making the video. Great stuff. I had my OG Xbox 1.6 modded with the Open Xenium chip and the HD+ mod. Got it back and I am seeing a lot of issues with the HD+ firmware. I see the issue in with the lines in 720p at the top of the screen & the 4:3 to 16:9 widescreen issue. I went onto the MakeMHz Discord and I am not getting a lot of help there. However I am seeing that some of these issue are known and will be addressed in the next firmware release. I installed a 2TB HDD with SATA adapter and used the origins hard drive image that is out there if you know where to look and got the HDD all setup with XMBC/games/emulators/CoinOps and the origins XBMC skin. If I have the HD+ set to original I cannot get XBMC to display in 720p or 480p. It will only do 480i. Setting 720p on the HD+ will allow me to get XBMC to display in 720p, but some xbox games will only display a black screen. In addition no matter what I set the HD+ to I cannot boot the console to the Open Xenium loader on three different HDTV's. Dustin says this is a known issue as well and some TV's cannot display the "weird" resolution the Open Xenium outputs. Not that I need to access the Open Xenium bios at this point, just pointing that out too as it does not work. I guess I need to wait for the new firmware to come out and hope it fixes all of these issues.
Do you know if these bugs were ever squared up? I’m considering modding my Xbox. I’ve also looked into replacing the hard drive to download games. Not sure if you have done that or not. I’d certainly love your input as you are my favorite mod channel on UA-cam haha
I’ve got both RAM and a HD+ I want to install but I just haven’t gotten around to trying yet lol. I’d enjoy another video showing and explaining the options in the HD+ app. For example, I don’t know what bilinear is and I know it’s an upscaling option but the app offers no explanation as to what it does. I’d also be interested in a video for the RAM upgrade if you wanted to make one.
The flex cable should have been paste fluxed and pre-tinned then set aside and let cool while you paste flux and pre-tin the resistor array. Couple minutes cooling then another bead of paste flux and all all you have to do is a 2 second weld for the two pre-tinned surfaces. Skipping the pre-tin is a sure fire way for an amateur to melt a flex cable. When you pre-tin the resistor array you cut the old solder chemistry with the new solder chemistry, this will flow faster with the all new solder chemistry on the flex cable. These videos are educational from the perspective of what not to do.
@@dubesinhower don’t take it like that, emotional responses hinder growth. Just pointing out facts that might help someone starting out, we all started somewhere. Pre-tin everything, no better way to distribute heat over time.
It has nothing to do with emotions, I make these videos in my spare time. There are many skills needed to make a UA-cam video, and modding skill is only one small part of it. If I waited until every skill was perfect, I would never make them I appreciate your suggestions, I will try that in the future
@@dubesinhower yeah I hear ya. I think it’s important to point out to everyone on this mod specifically both 1.6’s I’ve done the flex cable (rev 1.4f) only had top-side conductor pads. Definitely more difficult when the flex doesn’t have both top and bottom-side conductors to mate with the resistor array. Getting those resistors nice and plump will help flow a solid joint over to the flex topside pads on the flex.
I agree with this but I don’t agree with your remark on the video being educational for what not to do. What he did worked and he got the desired result, and he demonstrated doing it cleanly. Maybe he could just state he was shortcutting and not bothering with all that because he has the skill to not do it and still do a solid job. But, if you’ve got the time and want to reduce your margin for error, than those are steps you should/could take. That is good advice for someone like myself, who is much newer to soldering, and it creates less room for error, but he seems to know what he’s doing just fine. I have seen other videos of people pre-tinning the flex cable and such, and if I attempt this mod myself with the v1.4 I have, I’ll do the same. I bought the kit for a v1.1 but given the 720p freeze issue, I think I’ll use a v1.4. But anyway, his install was clean and it works.
Your xboxhd app solution only works because you left a copy of the folder in the C drive. The program is hard-coded to load from that location. If you had only put it in E:\Apps, it would throw an error, telling you it must be installed to C:\xboxhd. In my case, I put it in C:\xboxhd, and then I edited my config.xml on the C drive to include C:\xboxhd as a location for UnleashX to search for applications.
This looks a LOT easier than the 1.0/1.1 mod lol. Glad I've got a 1.6! Maybe I'll solder in my Xenium Ice while I'm at it instead of using the "solder-free" adapter. Hrm...
OK i wanted it actually. Ill skip it for now. If it's that much of a issue. The retrotink 5x looks good thou. Going to see what the ossc pro has to offer before getting the retotink 5x. I might look into putting some noctua's in mine. There are 3d prints for the mounts. Also a adapter that allows for wii components is available on the net. I just got a ebay one. The fans in it are noticeably load. it has noctua but the old way. it could be the drive thou. IDK. I just play the games. I got it from a seller for cheeper then the actual seller anyways. Plays the games fine.
I have a hard modded og xbox with hdmi mod. Im using xbmc4gamers and have the xbmc emustation. I've set up the resurections roms and all across the emulated systems is an audio delay/lag of about an entire second. Any trouble shooting help would be much appreciated, I haven't been able to find a solution. I expect the slight input lag could be the wireless controller or my tv but the audio issue is annoying. Thank you
with this mod there is no digital to analog video conversion, it gets the digital video straight from the gpu and convert it to hdmi format, so no noises and pure crispy image just like modern video games and gpus.
Is anyone repeating this process and selling this version of the modded box as a one-stop shop product? If so, can someone provide a link or contact? Or, is anyone willing to build me a couple for a particular price?
This is so frustrating man. MakeMHZ is a cool dude. But like.. this mod is so underbaked still. That 720p bug has been around for over 6 months.. and still here. Like. I wouldnt want to sell my product with the “perhaps” it will get fixed. *sigh*
Yea it is unfortunate, but Dustin's been dealing with a lot recently. Not trying to make an excuse, but it is a lot of work to self-produce and test and ship hundreds (thousands?) of mods, let alone the time it takes to iron out bugs. And he was recovering from Covid earlier this month
@@dubesinhower 100% agree it’s a hard thing to do. Issue is it’s still being sold. And honestly I haven’t seen many UA-camrs that installed one actually say it’s buggy so people go and buy it thinking it’s “feature complete” if this was a small run and he was working out bugs I would be less frustrated. But it’s in stock at castlemania and others. It’s a mass produced mod with some definite issues still. Dustin is awesome. Love the work he has done. But this is now Year 2 of the mod in the wild and some of early adopters of the XBOXHDMI feel a bit 😔

For sure!
It is. I know from experience that the flex cables are extremely delicate. They are single use pretty much.
While I've done a bunch of N64 UltraHDMI mods, I haven't yet tackled an XboxHD mod, but I'm about to. This video was super informative! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Tip: goo gone is really good for getting that thermal paste off, especially for getting the black gunk off the heatsink!
Agreed. It works very well. It’s the acetone in it that does it. Just gotta make sure to clean it up well with isopropyl alcohol.

Bilinear is the algorithm that is used for upscaling. It's what you want for 3D and video content. For 2D content, you want nearest-neighbor.

Gotta support Steve the GOAT
Yeah the js02 tip their are two types a fat and a smaller one i use the smaller one and it works great at 280 to 300 c
doesnt seem to be any info on make mhz , so you have to have the open xenium mod chip first right? you cant use HD+ without it?
Does Kung Fu Chaos works with the HDMI+ mod?
What can be done if you didn't change the bios first?
I started this mod years ago and can't remember if I did.
Any chance you’re on the east coast? Looking to pay somebody, to do this for me. Plz lmk! Thanks
