New Bike Launch Atherton S170 Walkthrough

- Опубліковано 4 лип 2024
- Double World Champion Downhill racer Gee Atherton shows off our brand-new aluminium bike which builds upon the learnings from our award-winning Additive Manufacturing range.
The S.170 is a hard-hitting, big-mountain enduro bike that mirrors the lug and tube construction of the brand’s world-beating Additive (A) range. Strength and perfect fit remain central to the brand’s efforts with 12 standard sizes offered. The S.170 has a mixed wheel configuration and 170mm rear travel with 180mm upfront and shares geometry with the award-winning A170. Dave Weagle’s DW6 suspension platform gives way to the simpler DW4 in keeping with the new model’s every day, “chuck it in the van and go” vibe
Gee Atherton said “We see so many failures and hear about so many warranty claims when we chat to riders on the Dyfi Bike Park uplift or at the races, it was a huge motivator for us that this wouldn’t happen with our bikes. The switch from Titanium and Carbon to CNC and extruded aluminium means we’ve taken a small hit on weight and design freedom, but with the benefit of even greater durability.”
The S.170 is constructed from Aluminium 7075. Because Atherton bonds rather than weld their frames we can use 7075 Aluminium which has 70% higher fatigue performance and 70% higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) compared to weldable alternatives (i.e. 6061 Aluminium). Custom-drawn 7075 aluminium tubes are joined to CNC-manufactured lugs using insanely strong double lap shear joints.
Exhaustive testing in the field at Dyfi, Queenstown and more was followed by brutal testing in the lab. The S170 has passed EFBE Tri Test Cat 4 ( Enduro) and Cat 5 ( Downhill) meaning that Atherton can offer a lifetime first-owner guarantee wherever you ride.
The S.170 will be available in limited numbers while we scale-up our production capacity so don’t delay! There will be three standard builds and a frame only option - Prices start at £4799 for a full bike.

Tis a thing of beauty. For me the difficulty is working enough to afford a bike like this and still have enough time to ride it!
That's what credit cards are designed for😂
Klarna or V12. Fcuk it.

Definitely one of, if not the most beautiful alloy frames on the market. Industrial in an elegant way, like a mountainbike should look.
Aesthetic wise I prefer Banshee's or Raaw's alloy frames
It's fucking ugly
I agree. When I was racing on the east coast of the US I became friends with Frank Wadelton and I ended up buying a Motorhead frame and ordered it unpainted. It looked so awesome and I saved Frank a few bucks.
The rub and tug technology is a thing of beauty.
Beautiful architectural philosophy combining the rider, the design, dynamics and engineering processes. perfect.
That raw colour 😍 👌 🔥
Looks mint, well thought out, single piece rear, easy maintenance and lifetime warranty 👍
Looks amazing
Looking great! Awesome work, team!
what a work of art.
Definitely a lot done right here. Love it.
Anyone else hear DW link and think of those bright green Iron Horse bikes Sam Hill was on?
Still do.. such an iconic bike. Same when hearing Hill, I love(d?) Nukeproof and CRC but my mental image of Hill will always be him drifting a flat corner on that green IH, just like I still see Peaty on that polished 222 with the old English graphics. I guess I’m getting old..
Beautiful bike!
Looks epic!
Best looking aluminium bike I seen ❤
wow!! that was amazing bike!
Simply love it!
Loving the Tug and Lube technology 🫣
Amazing ride, well done team!
Gorgeous, utter beast
Beautiful bike
So nice!
I haven't seen one up close yet but from what I can see, the quality/design is exceptional. I wish I was more of a downhill rider/younger.
This bike looks very great 🤩
Great looking bike. Been looking forward to seeing more about it.
Let us know if you have any more q's! sales@athertonbikes.com
That is such a good looking bike!
outrageous bike
All of your bike introduction videos are the best out there, great information and lots off stunning footage. Very much looking forward to moving back to the uk and coming to Dyfi to choose a bike.
We look forward to having you! make sure to pop us a message when you're planning on coming: sales@athertonbikes.com
Beautiful frame I love it
Looks🔥
Bernard Kerr should have had this bike last weekend....
Sick!
Soooo darn koool so glad they Tore up the rulebook and showed them all ! PURE MASTERCLASS done to a tee wicked .
Well said dude ✌🏽
Rulebook seemed not to include the price 😅
Very nice rig❤
That is one good looking bike 😍
What a weapon! 😈
Finally!
makes me wish i needed a new bike.thing looks amazing
you deffo need one of these!
So dope Do this in titanium that would be unreal!
Nice!
Gee is an elite level salesman as well as mountain biker 👏🏼
If it's even a scratch of my AM150 then it really is the last bike you'll ever buy. The build quaility and tolerances are second to none
🤩
Wow, soo insane
This bike is for me!
We can't wait to see you on one... what build is taking your fancy?
Beautiful bike, looks like a weapon.
That it is!!
@@AthertonRacingI’d happily test ride one for a channel review! Wink wink nudge nudge!!! 😂😂 Wish you guys the best of luck with it.
@Danny_Transition_Patrol bro here w/ 191 subs shooting his shot 😅
Looks incredible and isn't that expensive really. Great work!
Headed to your neck of the woods in June from New England. As soon as we have lodging sorted im reserving a hire
We'd love to have you! Pop us an email to let us know when we can expect you: sales@athertonbikes.com
Nice to see a big chamfer on them lugs, it helps to eliminate high stress at joint.
Did you ever notice that BK's bike does not seam to have any chamfer at the lug joint?
Beautiful looking bike, can't quite see where the motor is though...
The geo is probably spot on for sure.
Shit that is some rig, beautiful! God damn. 🔥
Love to see Denny Luffman shredding that test mule!
See you here on Thursday...
Is this the first full 7075 frame? Strength of mild steel yet with massive stiff tube sections. Banging!
Pole Voima
I think we all believe it's strong, stronger than Gee even, which is bloody tough!
Built Different
I believe him.
I gotta have one 😳!!!
I hope they are not using the same head stem connector as the Pivot prototype bike that Bernard Kerr was using. Looks similar.
Just browsed your shop site a few days ago and the A range price points I'm unable to explain to my non biking wife... But this S.170 on the other hand is really tempting and giving me an itch 🤣
New Bike Day on the horizon hey Ben! Let us know if you have any questions
Dang this thing came out of nowhere! Love my A130 and was thinking of a A170 but now rather a S170.
You know what to do.... sales@athertonbikes.com
These will sell like hot cakes, life time warranty on the frame 👍
For some reason, I really want a s170
😍😍😍😍
NOOOOOOO now i need this bike :( it sounds like my dream bike.
DAMN WE GOT YOU! 😅 Can't wait to see you on one...
Super nice. E-Bike someday?
🚀❤
Impressive technology. Just short of a gearbox and belt drive! Looks indestructible.
Gen X here, this is exciting shit. Like proper mad
Get ol bernard Kerr on one of these bikes. He’s smashed so many pivot frames over the last few years I don’t think he wants to ride them anymore. I wouldn’t. These bikes are the best. Look who rides them and what they do. And Dan is an absolute bike nerd so you know they are built right. Best bikes you can get today
Very interested in how the 130 frame will turn up!
Looks a bit like the tyee 👍 so good choice ;)
insanity
Looks fabulous and definitely coming from Atherton should be bomb proof 😂 love the look way more than the carbon version. I would love to know why the tubes are round on your bike, square or other shapes are less desirable in terms of strength? Is there a warehouse in Europe or all are shipped from UK? Asking because of the additional the taxes involved
Considering what happened to Bernard Kerr on his foldable pivot, reliable frames arrive at the right time...
Might be my new bike right there
Good taste - we can't wait to see you on one - what build do you fancy?
Ohhh tough question, I’ll be coming to wales in August to see my family from Australia and visit BPW, I may need to check in on sizes and custom build options. Definitely a sram + rock shox build. Looking for a build to absolutely eat Maydena bike park tech.
I would be interested to know if the frame is designed for coil only or if it would be possible to use something like a vivid for coil like feel but easy adjustability?
Great looking bike. Still hoping for a shorter travel, e-light bike. 🤞
Parece um quadro feito no fundo de uma garagem com poucas máquinas disponíveis. Os anteriores de carbono tbm
Awesome! Now just a trail hardtail full 29 and you can name your price...
fire the sound guy............
Really like the look of this. Will it be available frame only?
it sure is! www.athertonbikes.com/s170-frame.html
Hi, what about a bit shorter travel bike?
a dream coming true!
How are the tubes connected to the Lugs? I dont see welds and I don't know If you can glue Aluminium?
They are glued. You can glue anything. They glue airplanes together these days.
Have you considered watching the video?
I got excited when he said he wants everyone to rode their bike so i promptly went to the site and ready to order. I found out im 1k short to purchase their frame😂😂😂😂 pretty insane price😅 but i bet i would be worth it but not for me😢
actually a reasonable frame only price considering the grade of Alu, kinda wish there was full 29 version
Frame only is available now! www.athertonbikes.com/s170-frame.html isn't she 👌
Blimey,.. ~5 grand and you get partial NX drivetrain. That's just there so you have something until the replacement grey market import GX or better parts ordered from ebay turn up right?
Did you take hand gesture lessons from Cam McCall? Or is it just a Red Bull thing?
Can I get one in USA 100% the next bike I want exactly what I been looking for
Hey Steven! You sure can... we ship worldwide! if you have any questions or want to talk to the team please contact us: sales@athertonbikes.com
@AthertonRacing do excited saving now just got my bike for season ill be getting one 100% in winter
Love the looks, love the design priorities, good geometry. Would like some customization options for specs though as suspension should be prioritized over drivetrain IMO. Would also like a different shock on the frame-only build.
And would like to see it produced in a more sensible country to avoid the post-Brexit international trade levy ;).
Would actually really consider this to be my next bike if those things were different
Perfect Basis to build a Light E MTB as i see the hollow tubes there
So sick! Who's the 5001 rider tho?
Stick around.... more coming this Thursday!!
Stoked@@AthertonRacing
Tidy boyo .. can you hire these at dyfi?
We aim to have a demo fleet at Dyfi!
so there's no welding, so it's different and I like it
2.7k for a frame + shock, I want this
Get in touch and we'll get your order in! 👉sales@athertonbikes.com
@@AthertonRacing give me half a year to save some money and I'll get back to you guys😅
And 0 welding which means as a welder. The weld affected zone is where the weak point happens. So having no welds means heat treated alloy is able to move inside the press fits and flex and not break next to the weld. Weld becomes harder than the alloy on the bike and it shrinks causing distortion. Trust me I’m a pro welder for a living. Steel is a different story but alloy is berry tricky
I like rear triangle it's one peace which is really important because most riders snap rear triangle in welding spots.. OMG haye brakes ? Come on
anodized military green yummy
This is what happens to a person when he ridess commencal for too long.
Weld cracks lead to a PhD in welding of precipitation-hardening aluminum alloys.
Later he realizes that making an indestructible welded structure is difficult and expensive, so he creates an indestructible foldable one out of 7075. :D
How much is frame only?
You can see it here: www.athertonbikes.com/s170-frame.html
How are the tubes connected to lugs with soldering or some other method? Thanks.
www.athertonbikes.com/technology/build-srange.html
Epoxy 🤔. Hey if it passes the stress tests I guess it’s good. Curious to see what fails first. The aluminum or the bonding agent?
@@AthertonRacing You might want to get your web team to check the breakpoints for that page. The text is clipped on my laptop.
@@Chainsnsprockets402 Really ? Have you heard of Pole . . . . .
@@oliverbourne9599actually no I have not. Please educate me.
Can you buy as a frame only?
