It's not even just Zerode, its Lahar too who you could say had a bigger impact on the gearbox bikes but sadly they didnt capitalise on it because the guys mental.
Great to see this gearbox dream becoming a reality with such a strong team behind it! As UK manufacturers of a next-gen gearbox powertrain for e-bikes, we’re thrilled to see this innovation making its way into DH bikes. Can’t wait to follow the testing journey - keep pushing the boundaries!
This surge of belt driven bikes is going to make this racing season more exciting. These development videos are awesome. I'd like to more nerdy discussions about details and kinematics and stiffness, but maybe a lot of that is top secret. The bike looks rad.
It’s great to get this hype and small insight into the development journey. This team/organisation is so impressive and a credit to all involved. The bike looks amazing! Can’t wait to see how it stacks up.
Great video, what an exciting project. Stoked to see the gearbox route, how cool. Also shout out to the great liquid and chill dnb music in the background, so rad
Always seen the attraction of gearbox bikes but they have always been really niche but now this is really going to push them on, not long now when we will have low maintenance drive trains that are quiet and don't self destruct in British winters 👍🏻
I’ve been riding a peregrine cycles high pivot pinion frame for the last few years, love it! Stoked for this! This small frame builder has been building this design exclusively since at t least 2015
13:07 🎉 When you see riders of this pedigree swing through one after the other on a section like this, even watching you can see what’s going on. That A200.G looks like the next step up at the back end (which is where it’s all happening in bike development just now). Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant 🎉
My most wanted item ever. I would very much like to have one of these. After decades in the bike world I'm Not easily impressed with bike things but this is a beautiful set up.
Wicked! My son just got a Zerode taniwha and the handling with the lower unsprung mass really is superb. Atherton bikes are tasty! Hope they follow through on this project.
Huge kudos to Atherton bikes for being so open about this project. I think we all are excited for this project to succeed! An old vs new bike weight comparison would be cool too
Exciting times! The silence of the ride and clean looks really appeal to me. Have been drooling over Zerode for a couple years but great to see there will be many other alternatives around the corner... Including British made ones! ❤🎉
To be fair looks incredible and looks way better than the other belt driven bikes out there. I reckon this is going do well in the 2025 season with Charlie on the rig. Loic Bruni arse is going be twitching seeing this 😂
I have wanted a Zerode Bike ever since coming across them. Putting the pennies aside for it as we speak. So this is super exciting to see the gearbox is catching on.
Knew it wouldn't take long to do this when you brought the DH frame out. I've thought of a few that could adopt this tech that is long overdue. Great work 👍
One big advantage of belt drive is that the rear hub doesn't have to have such a wide body for something as wide as the cassette to mount on. It makes more room for the spokes to be mounted to the hub further apart and increasing the lateral stiffness of the wheel. There isn't yet hubs like that but would be a good place for improvement.
DT, Hope, and Hadley make 142mm spaced single-speed hubs. They use wider flanges with zero dish, and a short freehub body with spacers that allow for aligning the chainline (or 'beltline', new term). I would love to see them used on these bikes, it allows for a narrower rear end and better heal clearance.
What are you talking about?... It has nothing to do with belt! It has everything to do with single speed drivetrain, either belt or chain. And the hubs that you describe, already exist. They are called single speed hubs and there are several brands that provide such. Hope, Noa, Hadley, Onyx, Across, Paul are a few. I hope (no pun intended) that this trend will resurrect the mighty Chris King Singlespeed hubs! 🤞
Exciting times at Athertons, British development at its best, gearboxes are the way forward👍 in these difficult times for the mtb community🤔 good luck guys👍
I bought my bike 3 years ago from a company based out of NYC called Priority Bicycles, and a major selling point was the single speed Gate's carbon belt drive system that came standard on the bike. In fact, they specifically only offer Gate's with their bikes. They make a variety of bikes for most applications, but definitely not a dedicated DH bike like the Atherton. So, its really cool to finally see this carbon belt drive system being utilized on MT bikes. Honestly, idk why other mtb companies haven't embraced the Gate's system.
I bought a Priority bike for my son and the drivetrain has been very reliable after 3 years. BUT, the brakes and general component spec isn't good at all. Also, the gear ratio is very flatlander focused and not made for a small child to climb hills. Just observations from another Priority owner.
To be fair looks incredible and looks way better than the other belt driven bikes out there. I reckon this is going do well in the 2025 season with Charlie on the rig
Absolutely stunning. I used to race in the late 90s, early 2000s, and would see the occasional chain in this design, just not an internal gearbox ... It's clearly the future, one step closer to Motocross now technology is more affordable.
Love the bikes and I am hoping that maybe you will be doing the Enduro with a belt drive as I think I will go this route for my last bike. I would love it to be a Atherton bike if possible.
A big reason gear box bikes are only now being accepted as the best solution in an off road environment is the massive industry behind drivetrain parts, Shimano and SRAM do not want you to severe your dependance on them, otherwise they both would have had their own by now (oil bath and proper machine cut gears, not an ‘internal derailleur system’).
Such an awesome looking bike can't wait for the day I'm good enough to need / justify such a machine but great to see a British company at the cutting edge AND actually winning, here's to 2025
gearboxes are the future of mtb and im totally here for it i dont see the need for a chain derailure and cassette when you can have less maintinence and better center mass with belts etc.
What’s not said in this video…. Look we figured out suspension and frame integration and suspension design for when we make an ebike using pinions motor gearbox unit!!!!
I have the Priority 600HXT which they market as their Hardcore Hardtail MTB. Would be interesting to see how is compares with the Zerode !?!? I am a senior and purchased the Priority as my keep fit and “smell the roses” instrument.. love this machine. For the serious youngsters out there the 600HXT would no doubt be better if it was titanium or carbon. My opinion (pun intended), Priority bikes with Pinion gearboxes and Gates belt drives are pioneering belt driven machines and the future of off road cycling.
Interesting that other brands have been touting gearbox bikes for a while now but somehow now Atherton are releasing something it seems more real and something to be excited about.
What we really need is timed runs against a bike with chain and rear mech to see which if any is the better ,faster set up . This is racing at the highest level so no gimmicks just speed counts
Did you watch the video with no sound? Literally said they ran timed laps at Llangollen on both. Box bike was sluggish in certain areas but felt tracked, so certain changes to the first iteration were needed My presumption is they not what they are doing and have a pretty experienced R&D squad.
@@stevietoft4480 Watched the video again and cant believe i missed Charlie explaining this point . Yes i have full confidence in Atherton bikes but it will be interesting to see which teams continue to develop the belt driven gearboxes once the 100k prize has been claimed .
Do ya’ll test it up against competitor bikes as well? I would think it could be beneficial to try and figure out what feels better on other bikes and how stuff is in general there, to know what you want to try and achive with this and not just sim for «better than A200M but mostly shooting in the dark. Phoenix, V10, Supreme and/or G3 perhaps?
Has anybody done any data acquisition of time in each gear, of that time was the rider pedaling and when pedaling was it putting power down or just spinning on a traditional drivetrain on a variety of WC courses? Perhaps it was stated but what Pinion gear box are they using?
props to Zerode that hold this idea many years, finally its the future
It's not even just Zerode, its Lahar too who you could say had a bigger impact on the gearbox bikes but sadly they didnt capitalise on it because the guys mental.
Downhill makes sense. The rest of the disciplines, too heavy and too much drag.
Thats what I was thinking, was wondering are they going to even mention Zerode?
@@NikolaiVozza Wrong.
Nicolai is using gearboxes and belts for quite a few years now.
That is an effing beautiful bike. I can’t wait till they come into commercial production. I want one.

Shoutout to the Atherton production crew. You guys always pulm through the goods on the filming and editing of your videos. Second to none!

Love the bike as well. But honest question, how do you figure this isn't a niche bike as well?
really glad I bought an Atherton. Great to see this high end stuff in the UK

Rad engineering guys, super cool
this is the future! and i am usually complete against new "trends"

@@MrHypermoto Zerode spec a 142x12 hub as standard on their Katipo 👍
Could be, but the pros, loosen the spokes on their wheels now, for compliance, so not that necessary, but strength might be the biggest advantage 🤷♂️
