    Good morning every one. As I uploaded this video I realized that this was my 150th video 🎉 With my friends all double vaxed we are talking again about getting together to sew . I have several weekends planned for the fall, so it's time to get my travel bag ready to go. I hope you will be inspired to plan a small retreat again.

    I know this is not part of actual sewing kit but do not forget comfy outfits that still fit. After all our time behind closed doors clothes may be a bit snug now. Nothing worse than sitting down to sew and fabric digs into waist or tight across thighs. Try on before you pack. Thanks again for your videos. I always learn new things.

    I always bring a cotton padded placemat to set my machine on. It helps deaden sound, but also allows me to push the Machine back if I need a little more space in front of the machine for some task.

      What a fantastic idea! I do this at home, and always forget to take one with me when I travel. And I have a few odd-ball placemats that could just "live" in my machine's travel case.

      I also bring manuals (I'm relatively new to sewing via scrapbooking). I don't use smartphone or tablet so hardcopy manual works great for me. An acquaintance sold me her ancient SInger serger with unreadable manual due to oil spill, so I found a replacement manual online.

    Just a few additions to your packing list … I always bring unscented hand cream and lip balm, readers, and now sanitizing wipes. I put my pedal and cord in a quilted bag under the wheel, inside the machine throat goes my combo thread catcher and pin cushion made from a fancy soap box, and snug on the needle side is a pouch of notions, tools, scissors, rotary cutters etc … all three of these items are from the same fabric as my oversized tote for cutting boards, small design boards etc which makes them easier to identify as mine and less likely to be left behind. Making padded I.D. wraps for EVERY bag you bring is a helpful/fun project and nice little gift to give fellow ‘getawayers’ (Mary Mulari has a pattern/tutorial). Thank you SEW much for your service to the quilting community, Karen.

    I would like to share one tip. I cannot remember where I was when I saw this, but it was fantastic.
    On the back of your cutting mat write out a check list of all your items. When you start to pack up at the end of the event, flip your mat and place each item on it. Do not pack the things away until everything is on the mat.
    You can also outline larger items like is done on peg board so you know at a glance what is missing.
    I too use the scrapbook totes for individual projects. It makes it easy to grab and go, knowing everything for that project is in one place.

    Great tips. One more: I have a typed list with all major items. This list goes in a page protector. As I pack each item is checked off. Most importantly, as I pack up to return home, each item is again checked off list. Easy peasy. Nothing forgotten and nothing left behind. Oh - the list is clipped to front of sewing trolley with its marking pen inside. BTW, I use this trick for suitcase packing/traveling as well. I never stress over forgetting anything.

    Hi Karen, I have made a check list of all the “don’t forget” items and I taped it to the tote that I take my smaller items in. I also put address labels on my foot pedal and items that might wander. I refer to the check list when packing up so I don’t forget anything.

  • @katoz97
    @katoz97 2 роки тому +33

    Great tips! I'll share one of mine... use return address labels on the items that may wander. I have them on my rulers, the back of my cutting mat, my rotary cutter, and my mini iron.
    Also, there are folding rulers and mats that provide the option to go bigger without needing a ton of extra packing space.

Was looking forward to some quality sewing time, but, had to leave the sewing stuff at home as there wasn't room. Next time, we are getting a roof tote! Was very disappointed.

    I just spent a week at a workshop. I too have had a travel bag for a long time. I bought a sewing machine bag at JoAnns ( with a 60% off coupon of course) back in 2018 and it carries my sewing tools. In addition to your list I carry one of those cup holders that has a trash bag attached. I have never had to replace my original trash bag as it is only used for sewing trash. At the end of my fun I dump the thread snips and trimmed dog ears. My trash part comes off the cup holder and folds flat. The cup holder goes in my bag and that is where I store my spray bottle. I also always carry a light mine is Daylight Company Halo Table Magnifying Lamp this one is nice as you can charge while sewing and then when you are ready to relax and hand stitch it will run on batteries. Plus it folds down really small. From Amazon.
    My machine is in its own bag complete with a surge protector. I carry my Bernini 570 QE to classes, retreats, workshops and to fun sewing with friends. It is packed with everything you listed yep cord and foot pedal in addition I have a flat board with moleskin from Martelli that stops my foot pedal from escaping.
    If it a day class I can put my project in with my sewing tools. If I will there for a few days I add all the accessories I will need for each project to my sewing tools. Like for foundation paper piecing I add my add a quarter tool. Each project has its own bin in my room so I grab them make any cuts needed and go.
    Congratulations on 150th video. I believe I have enjoyed them all.

      The magnifier lamp was purchased for my motor home & cross stitching, then I discovered how useful it is and well it travels with me to everything. I too used stuff I already had. My cup/trash bin that clamps onto the table edge was from my scrapbooking days. A lot of the rulers used for that are now being repurposed for quilting. I bought better tools for quilting during my teaching days so all my old tools are in my travel bag. There are only a couple of new ones like a different and safer rotary cutter that are in my travel bag. I did buy the 14”X 14” wool mat for my travel bag. I have not indulged in the Olisio travel iron. I have three travel irons already Two that can no longer do steam and one that can. I can’t really justify that purchase. The other reason I went with two totes it spreads the weight out. Do to bad hand injuries in my 20’s neither of my hands have much strength. Really enjoyed this video.

    • @nuvoclassic
      @nuvoclassic 2 роки тому +3

      @@tamipugh3377 I also use multiple bags to spread out the weight due to bad back. When I arrive at hotel, bags are loaded onto luggage cart for easy transport to retreat room.

    • @tamipugh3377
      @tamipugh3377 2 роки тому +1

      @@nuvoclassic I actually keep my tool rolling tote packed all the time. So I only have to grab project specific tools to add. I pack up my machine and I’m ready to go. I taught sewing classes for years so I accumulated doubles of all my favorite tools. Now that I am retired I am thankful I purchased them when I did. As I no longer live by wonderful quilt stores. I get to travel back to my home state once a year and I try to hit all 7 quilt stores while I am there. Last year I came home with like 4 new tools and 5 quilt kits and patterns. I am hoping my favorite quilt store has there week long workshop again.
      I hope you have a Merry Christmas and get whatever sewing tools on your list.

    The other thing I do when I travel with quilting/sewing tools. At home, as I "fill" my assorted small zippered pouches with the items that belong in each (one for cutting tools, one for marking tools, etc.), I photograph the pouch and contents on my phone. Then, as I'm gathering my items to leave the venue, I check each pouch against the photos I have saved in my phone.
    My next quilting retreat is three states away (with my two sisters who don't live local -- yay!), and I'll be flying in/out. That means I have to pack all my tools, fabrics, etc. into a box and FedEx it to the hotel a week or so before the retreat, then send it home afterwards. Why? Because I like to travel with only a roll-aboard suitcase, and I can't take any of the sharp implements into the plane cabin. Luckily, I won't need my sewing machine, as they're providing new Berninas.

    Two suggestions:
    My bag has a folding ruler- has been pretty sturdy.
    Cutting mats fit in an artist’s portfolio. I also put my sewing machine extension in it, and that keeps things stiff. They have handles. You can pad with fabric.
    I also made a 2x4 ft ironing board. 1/4” thick plywood, batting flannel and topped with Teflon fabric. Wonderful for ironing yardage, and can be placed on any flat surface as it has no legs. Can warp, so don’t use under a cutting mat. But I still have knees., so I’ll use the floor if I have to.

    At a sewing retreat many years ago, I saw a woman with a magnetic pin tray in a small food container. I had the same container at home (totally useless for food as the lid is so tight that you end up spilling the food) and also a magnetic tray. Put them together and love them. Also learnt how to knit small items on a circular knitting with a large loop. Then there were the organised lessons. :-)

      Magnetic dishes seem to be cheaper at tool/home improvement stores (Harbor Freight comes to mind) than through the quilting/sewing shops.

    In NSW, Australia, we are in severe lockdown. Can’t travel more than 5Kms from home. Masks whenever we go outside the front door. I’m enjoying online grocery shopping though. I may never go into a grocery store again. Bill and I have had both injections and are happy at home. Lots of sewing time. 😂

    Loved these packing tips! Hubby and I volunteer for 2 weeks a month most of the year. While the guys and gals (that choose to) build at churches or camps many of us gals sew on mission projects or our own projects. It’s like being on a sewing retreat for me and hubby is happy because he likes to stay busy and learning more skills. We are traveling with a purpose” Volunteer Christian Builders.” I highly anticipate your UA-cam videos and learn something helpful in each one. Love the way you stretch our knowledge in the “Circle” videos!!!! Blessings

    I keep a standard list in a note app on my phone. Before any retreat I add the specific projects and speciality tools I might need to the list. I just bought a new machine, that is a little lighter than my old Bernina, so that it would be easier to haul (but they don't come with hard shell cases anymore, so I need to get a rolling tote.

    Wish I had seen this 2 days ago, before I traveled to the middle of rural Vermont for 10 days. I brought my machine, more than enough fabric to finish 2 quilts , my rulers and my cutting mat, but I forgot my rotary cutter! No fabric stores in this area, and even Amazon will take 8 days to get me a new one! Luckily I brought some knitting! I’ll print out your list and check it twice before each trip from now on!

    I don’t store my “go bag” in the car because a friend of mine had her sewing machine warp because of heat. I tend to pack too much for retreats and not enough for my weekly sew group. I’m going to go through my stuff and narrow it down to your basics. I agree that sewing machine cords and foot pedal are the worst thing to leave behind. Because all sewing accessories are the same I label all my equipment liberally. I got home without my foot pedal and machine cord once and no one claimed responsibility for picking it up. I also lost the cover for a sewing table, although I didn’t come home without one, it was not my new one. Now I have everything tied very obviously with pink plastic measuring table and my card is taped to everything. I’ve even taken to marking my “stuff” with a dab of a distinctive nail polish that I can easily spot. I have marked my machine feet that travel as well as my rulers with this. The overpacking is probably what leads to missing objects because I believe quilters are the best people you can ever know. I appreciate all the tips and tricks you share because I’ve been ruled by the quilt police too long. Finished is better than a pile of fabric. I’m at the age where I have to just get it done. Thank you for your tips, tricks and expertise along with your sensible approach to the budgeting of items and getting the most out of what we have.

      I started a list a full week before my trip. I carried it with me everywhere. By the time I needed to pack it was amazing. When I got to my week long workshop I was set. I did not forget anything. I did help two other ladies who forgot oil for their machines and new needles. I also have learned to carry a sweater or hoodie sometimes air conditioning can be a little too much depending on where you end up sitting. If I don’t need it the jacket just stays in my car.

    Hello from Germany,
    Thank for this very helpful video - as a matter of fact, I also have a suitcase of travel stuff always ready packed. But what I never do is just driving it around in the trunk of my car. In Germany, the gasoline prices are skyhigh, you can possibly not imagine the prices! Therefore I try to have as little weight in the trunk as possible since it has a more than notecable effect on the gas consumption of the vehicle.
    It is so easy to do something for the environment - just wheel the suitcase to the car, put it in the trunk and drive off. No need to drive it around when not needed

    Karen, thank you so much for this! I was invited to a small retriet with my daughter a couple months ago but we said no because there was no time to plan. We walked in to one of my favorite fabric stores and the owner invited us and let us know it was the next day. We are going to quiltcon in February and I have been unsure of what to bring. I can't seem to find a list and I don't know how the classes work as far as supplies and tools go. This video was really helpful! Thank you so much!
