OMG the thread coming out of the snaps just blew my mind. My jaw literally dropped.
As a seamstress I started carrying a personalized container in the glove compartment. Once they discovered I sew a few co workers have commisioned me for jacket zipper replacement, minor alterations, even quilt making . What they don’t know, is that I pray for them during the entire project. 😁👏🏻
That’s lovely!
A tutorial on English Paper Piecing from you would make my day! You explain steps clearly and logically with an easy to follow cadence. I appreciate your videos and you. Thank you for the time, effort and knowledge you impart to us all. Have a blessed day.
For pins and needles,. I use magnets ( those pizza/business card magnets for the refrig are small and can be cut to size) ..use 2 and sandwich the pins and needles in between.
Hi Karen! I’m a baby sewist, and I love your videos. I especially loved your story about your quilt in the blue bag, it gave me tears. I wish I lived near you because I would want to hang out with you to sew and have wonderful conversation. You are an amazing and inspirational woman. Thank you for teaching all of us! Hugs- Lin❤️
I watch on my TV, so I don't often make comments, but today I logged on my computer just to say this. One, please do a EPP video. I have been using this for travel because Bernie (that's what I call my 770 QE) is too big. It might sound strange but I have horrible anxiety when traveling and concentrating on the EPP was so very helpful. I missed the view, but was so much more relaxed. And for Two, I absolutely love your videos and teaching style. I've only made a few full quilts and mostly table runners, but watching you gives me confidence that I can tackle it and that nobody will even see the mistakes I know I make. :)
Yes! English paper piecing!
Appropriately enough, I watched this while waiting for my cousin at the airport. I didn’t have a sewing project with me, but watching your videos is just as beneficial.
I saw a pic on FB of an Olympic diver waiting in the stands, and he was KNITTING!
Yes...I thought of him too :)
I saw that, too! Good way for him to calm his nerves!
Omgoodness that’s awesome!!! ❤️😀
I love your Tips!!! I like to have needle threader with me. Perhaps it is good to put your Adress in there, so you have a Chance to get your Bag back If some one finds it.good afternoon
Great tip!
Lady, you are so smart! The snap idea for dispensing thread.....mind blown. Love all your videos.
I am not surprised that you were able and willing to help your bank manager with a button! You are a wonderful example of kindness and respect AND obviously an ambassador for the quilting community! Love it!
I've become obsessed with sashiko/kantha type quilting. Big thread, big needle, and quilting in straight(ish) long lines. I am currently working on a bedsized quilt that I am doing in thirds -- that whole long piece gets rolled up tidily and clipped with those awesome clips just to the spot I'm working. It folds into my big soft purse, and I carry a little needle kit and with scissors clipped to it. (sometimes I use a carabiner clip and clip the scissors to my clothes too.) Was able to finish a quilt for Christmas by doing 20 minutes on the bus every morning.
I used to do a lot of applique too. Hawaiian style blocks have travelled with me in all sorts of settings ... camping, picnics, TV, visiting, travelling.
I am doing a sashiko by the square. Sort of quilt as you go strategy. I definitely need to develop some on-the-go kits as well. Glad to see someone else hooked on sashiko as well.
wOw!! That sounds SO AMAZING!!! You must post a pic of it under her blog!!
I am also thinking of finishing my very first quilt with that. How many stitches do you get in an inch, what is the distance between rows and are you using different colour thread? Thank you for your comment.
@@hazelem1266 I use perle cotton size 8. Get some sashiko needles... they need to be strong, have a big enough eye, and sharp to go through fabric. Distance apart is up to you. I often use the width of my thumb as a guide, just a bit of air to both sides. I also use my thumb as a guide when I'm quilting in low light or ths thread matches too much to see well.
My favourite effect is using lines of different colors cutting right through a boldly colored print... it makes it look like it's being blurred with raindrops.
@@cfraser1321 thank you so much for the response. I’m really looking forward to doing it. I started first hand sewing last year with the strict lockdown in Melbourne and I’m putting it together now. It’s taken me a year to do this story/family /photos/appliqué quilt which has gotten bigger and bigger. Yet, as a nurse, it has saved me mentally. Thank you.
EPP? Yes, Please!! For the sewing kit, that idea about threading through then winding around the snaps is priceless!
I would like to see you put together a hexi piece and also see how you sew them together to make a flower. I'm new at this. I have
made some quilts in the past, but I can't walk very good (I am 83) and I do a lot of sitting now, so I thought it would pass the time away. My name is Betty Jones and I live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. I love watching your shows. Thanks⚽ 🙂
Some great ideas! EPP - yes please, Karen 😊
Love your new hairstyle Karen. You have wonderful ideas and I love them all
I've read that UA-cam likes lots of comments too! I would love to see a tutorial on English Paper Piecing. I just did my 1st FPP quilt and loved it. I also used you technique for binding a quilt...thanks!!
I like to wind thread from almost empty spools onto bobbins to carry in my sewing kit esp. for EPP.
Hi Karen! EPP Yes please!! Love sewing on the go! Thanks for sharing your tips!
Thanks Karen. I love this idea!! I'm needy on a larger scale. LOL I had family members in and out of hospital and medical tests. I use to sit around sighing because I could be doing SOMETHING while waiting, so now I have a bag....I call it my ditty bag. Inside it has pockets-- I keep a fabric ornament-Styrofoam ball or egg, fabric or ribbon cut to size, pins--they are in a paper roll--I think they are called "ticket pins" from the good ole days. Because the pins are in a roll I can tear off a couple of hundred and they are secure in the paper. I also have small snips and thimble. But in my bag I also carry my spare phone charger, my MP3 player with a book, water, and snack. I also have another bag with knitting that has the above, also. I just throw in my wallet on the way out the door and I'm good to go. Makes the time go by and I feel productive.
My granddaughter just finished an MRI and we'll be going through follow-ups and knee surgery, physical therapy and more followups. Now is definitely the time for me to put together a To-Go project. Thanks for all the info.
Wise tips. “Toss test” yes another good idea.
This is great. Please do a video on EPP! Have been wanting to try that!
I take a sewing project with me every time I'm going somewhere overnight. 3 years ago my son had cancer (thankfully, doing excellent considering it was esophageal). Anyway I took a few sewing projects with me and was able to contain the projects in an old makeup/jewelry bag. It fit easily in my tote. I also carried some tatting with shuttle into a small ziploc bag. My sewing kit had embroidery, epp, and I was working on hand pieceing a small quilt. I was able to fit a 5-6 inch hoop in my little tote. I got quite a bit done with each little project while spending a lot of time at my son's bedside about 2-3 weeks.
Yes, EPP. I would love to make 1 Grandmother's garden! You make each UA-cam so thoughtfully.
What you did with the thread and male snap is brilliant!
Oh my goodness that thread hack is genius 😳 I’ve been hand quilting a quilt with three different colors and this is such a great idea!
I would like very much to see a video on paper piecing. I love your idea for feeding the thread through the snaps and the winding techniques. Also the idea with the scissor. I can take a project with me to the laundry room. Thank you again for more great ideas.
I’d love to see a video of how you pulled your thread through those snaps and how you keep it inside your zipper pouch for the the go bags. Thanks for all your videos!
Good morning everyone. I have just been sewing-on-the-go...my first road trip in forever. My nephew was married on the weekend in Montreal. It was a lovely time with family who we had not seen in over two years. So the video is a bit late...but I can definitely vouch for how a good sewing-on-the-go-kit can fill those dead moments when you are waiting for stuff to happened. So grab your coffee and enjoy.
.
Correction- I use Invisafil thread not Invisalign 🙄
I had my husband make me a template that fit on 2.5 strips so I could us 2.5 and use rotary for English paper piecing and sooooo easy to turn and sew, Karen make a ruler ❤️❤️❤️❤️and sell them, my friends love what he made👍
Can you tell us where you find the poich
@@teresasabin1754
In Florida, most stand alone "drug stores" (which include a pharmacy) will also have a nice makeup section - which often has makeup bags of various sizes.
Thank you once again Karen for sharing your wealth of ideas and talent
I love it 💕
Yes I would like an English paper piecing video
Yes please to a video on EPP. I'd like to see how you use the hexie cutter. I started sewing and quilting during lockdown, but because machine grown quilts seem to grow very quickly it made me wonder what everyone does with their finished quilts? I saw a video on EPP and was hooked. I've been making it for about 4 months now and it's still only 24" x 48" approx. My hexies are all cut by hand and none of the sides are the same so I'd really like to see your hexie cutter in action and to know the make of it please. Thank you
This video couldn’t have come at a better time. In a couple of months, God willing, I will have to have a stay in hospital in isolation for a few weeks. I set to make myself a bag to carry my hand quilting in (Japanese QAYG squares) It’s a project, pattern byAnnie and I was thinking it was too small. Now I’m thinking maybe its too big. After watching your video I shall certainly test it out prior to using.I don’t want thread, needles etc bouncing around a hospital room. I’ve already been thinking of some modifications but I can see a few more coming on. Thanks
I love to buy makeup bags, totes, purses and backpacks at the thrift store because they are so much cheaper than a retail store. When I get home, I'll put them in a laundry bag, toss in the washing machine with dish rags and beat up towels and then allow them to air dry. They come out beautifully.
Definitely YES on the PPP! I’m willing to bet you have an easier way to do it and keep it interesting. Get tips every single time I watch your blog, which I love! I watched your first video, and I liked you from the moment when you said “Tips, ttricks
Thread thru snaps GENIUS!!!!
Please do give us a video on EPP Karen as your teaching style is very good for those of us who are unsure of ourselves. I too like pencil cases but also use toilet bags...we still have no groups yet and I'm still shielding and finding isolation very difficult. I've found you again in the hope to deal with depression and anxiety. Thank you for your channel. God bless from Northern Ireland
Love love love EPP and I’m so addicted to Hexies. I’m still looking for the ‘perfect’ on the go sewing case. I’ve sewn a couple, which I love doing, and have tried a few but still haven’t found one that I love. Thanks so much for sharing yours. You showed me the functionality that my case should have. Thanks again!
Yes we would luv a paper piecing tutorial , we can't have too many of them .we need more!!
For anyone looking for a roll up bag/case like Karen's I just realized (after searching for "rollup pencil cases" for the past 10 months to no avail) that it might be a rollup makeup bag instead or at least I'm finding a lot more "rollup makeup bags" that look like hers on amazon, ebay, aliexpress, etc. than when I've tried to search for "rollup pencil case". I just got a similar one for myself so that maybe I can start with the hexies soon too!
I would love to see a tutorial on English Paper Piecing, please.
I would love to have a video on EPP TIPS
You always come up with good ideas. Thanks. Like the new haircut. suits you.
It's ziploc bags for me, one for a project, one for supplies/tools. Had a couple of things picked out all ready to go on holiday with us for our anniversary, and then...lockdown wouldn't you know. Happy together wherever we are. For sure an EPP series for me -- among the many voices. Have a lovely day
Yes! Karen, such great stuff to tell us- EPP would be a great video-yay - The travel case is so understanding- and the details make more sense
Making yoyos are a good take on the go project
Yes also please to an EPP video. Excellent idea for keeping the clear threads corralled ! Having some handwork to work on while waiting for anything makes for a less stressed me.....the time spent waiting becomes productive time. Thank you for your videos.
The clover thimble is my favourite too
I might need to make a small travel sewing kit. I’d love to see a video on English paper piecing.
The game changer in my “go” kit is a Clover needle dome where I can safely store 10 threaded needles. It’s a bit bulky but worth it for car trips where threading is difficult. I also keep a pair of reading glasses in there.
When I first saw this video I knew one day I would want to try EPP, so I bought the travel kit. Now here I am two years later and my kit is in my suitcase wish me luck. Thank you for all the tips and a well thought out kit.🌸
Yes! Karen, the EPP video would be great! Sandi Myer🥰
Yep. English paper piecing, please.
Yes please on the English paper piecing video!!
Your videos are real value for money Karen! You simply spill over with useful hints. Thank you so much.
I would definitely enjoy seeing your take on English Paper Piecing.
The snap idea for the thread is a great one! I’m totally going to steal this.
Would love some EPP videos but not just hexies. Keep up the great videos Karen.
Yes, do a segment on paper piecing hexes, especially sewing them together! I used to cut my own until I found them online, precut in various sized, not jus 1/2 inch. I need help stitching them together more smoothly.
Great tips. Lucky you can go out again.👍🇦🇺
Thanks Karen for all the great tips. 👍❤️😊
You're an inspiring teacher!! So practical and real-life-funny...toss it in the air, steady on the lap!!! True True!!!
Excellent ideas for sewing on the go! Thank you, Karen!
The snap trick---brilliant!!!
Please do a English Piecing tutorial. I enjoy many of your videos. Thank you.
I would love to see a tutorial on EPP it is something I want to start Loved your big baby boy in the water, it looks like he is in heaven
Yes please do a video on EPP. Thanks
Plan ahead? Yes! Your "Tips, Tricks and Strategies" are always great. I love this one!
Yes! EPP!!! Please!!!
I've never heard of English paper piecing. I'd like to learn, so yes, please do a video on that!
You recommended using a hexy punch and cardstock from mail adverts before, and I instantly went and bought said punch. Now those annoying cards serve a good cause.
HahaHAhaHaHAHAhaHa! That's GREAT!!!
i bought the punch, and it won’t go through cardstock! it barely punches paper cleanly. any tips?
@@sirleebutler It doesn't go through paper for some reason but through cardstock. Try anything above 160 g per square meter.
HI KAREN, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU DO A FEW UA-cam VIDEOS ON EPP COZ WHEN ITS ALL SAID & DONE, IT IS A FORM OF MAKING QUILTS FOR THOSE THAT YOU CARE FOR.........YOU ARE MY QUILTING HERO & I'VE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM YOUR VIDEOS SO FAR. WARMEST REGARDS FROM TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA 🙂🙂🙂
I love the thread pull and wrap around you made. Brilliant!
Yes please, English paper piecing and appliqué.
EPP! EPP! EPP! 😍
EPP Yes please ! 👏👏😘
Yes to an EPP video!
Fiskars makes small scissors for school age kids (found in the office or school supplies aisle in most stores). I've seen round nosed, pointy and needle nosed scissors about 5 inches in length. These are surprisingly sharp and for under $2 on back to school sales, they are worth getting for every sewing project bag you have. 💖🌞🌵😷
I have felt that often. Wish I had been organized before right now as I have 2 or 3 hours waiting for someone to get out of surgery. Nice to watch UA-cam while waiting though.
Hi Karen. I LOVE these types of videos. I always have a knit bag ready to grab as I go out the door. I also have a clear vinyl bag that I have my hexies in and a small bag with my hexi tools in. I take those, too. I have one more row of "squares" to go before I can start sewing them all together. It definitely won't be portable then. lol I love doing EPP. Great video, Karen! Your channel is one of my favorites!
thank you
I do love sewing hexies...They were a major part of my first art quilt for my niece and something I frequently sewed on breaks. I love that you sew around those edges as well. I have found this tutorial useful, and often used zippered bags for these sorts of travel kits as I have two curious kitties.
Yes. I would really appreciate a tutorial on EPP. Your videos are the best.
Like your kit with the snaps that you pull your thread through. Ingenious!! Like your hair cut too.
Glad you liked it!
OMG are you a mind reader? I've just been thinking of this as I've been summoned for jury duty and might have to sit around all day at our courthouse. Perfect timing!
Excellent tips - the snap idea to manage thread is pretty ingenious 👏🏻👏🏻
Check with your airline. Mine allows scissors with blades up to 4 inches (not over all length). 💖🌞🌵😷
I know you posted this segment a year ago (and I watched it a few months ago) but wanted to thank you for the great ideas for organizing EPP projects. I just recently was able to utilize my new soft pink makeup bag filled with my 3/4" hexi project as I sat in 2 different airports. Because I had 4 zippered compartments I stayed perfectly organized. Thanks for your great videos!!!
Thanks! This is just what I need to pack. I’m new to EPP and I love how portable it is! I especially like the see thru compartments for keeping my project separated, safe and accessible.
Id love tutorial on paper piecing I've never tried it
Genius thread dispensing snaps idea! 😍
You have some great tips in here. I love the idea of using the snap to manage thread!
I always add a card or something with some contact info just in case I lose my project bag (also, i'd love to see you do a video on EPP)
I would enjoy an episode on EPP, great ideas, thank you!
Thanks Karen, guess what I am waiting to see the doctor and watching you, how I wish I had broght my hand sewing. Will definitely do it next time 🇨🇦💕
It makes the delays much more tolerable
My handwork helps me wait more patiently or is it peacefully.
I would love to see a tutorial for English Paper piecing. I have seen so many wonderful projects made with them and I like that it uses scrap fabric (I have plenty of that!). I would love to eventually make a table cover with them.
Good points, Karen!
Yes, please do a video on EPP. I love watching your videos and have learned a lot. Thank you 😊
I keep a bag in my car with small cross-stitch projects and needles and floss and a snip and needle minders. Or might bring EPP on longer trips.
Very helpful. The use of the male snap for your thread feed is brilliant!!
Glad you think so!
