  • A review of the Hubuish campfire tripod kit vs tripod with paracord lashing. The Hubuish tripod kit comes with a 3" (7.6 cm) stainless steel tripod board that accommodates up to a 3/4" stick, 39.5" (100.3 cm) of stainless steel chain attached to a 3" (7.6 cm) pin to set the height of the chain, a 2" (5.1 cm) S-hook from which to hang a cookpot, and a synthetic leather pouch with snap closure and belt loop. The leather pouch is 4.75" x 5" (12.1 x 12.7 cm).

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and thoughts on the hubuish tripod board, but mostly thank you for the time spent showing us the comparison between lashing and the board.

Good review. I bought one, and came to the same conclusions as you. You really have got to have the right diameter sticks to jam it all together. It holds together by friction. If you want to make a slight adjustment of the tripod legs you have to to jam it back together all over again. It works. But it's not that convenient. I went back to lashing my tripods back together again. It seems a more secure and safer method and it's easier to adjust the position of the legs. I suppose it's because the lashing provide you with a single unit that holds together all in one piece. The chain was useful though. Its worth learning how to lash a tripod together. It creates a good structure which wont collapse on you. Nobody wants to get scalded by a collapsing tripod and pot.

I think finding and cutting the branches adds to the whole experience, but so would lashing them together. The chain and hook is what really comes in handy with such a kit as this one.

That looks really nice. Very thorough and entertaining demonstration.

Cris, I thought your demo on the lashing was the best part. I've always given up in frustration on that. I would probably do that as opposed to the tripod campfire board.

Thank you, @Coop. After getting to tie a lashing, I agree that it would be my preference over the board. Gadgets can be fun but there's that pleasant sense of satisfaction when making something yourself. Plus the lashing is more forgiving in that the diameter of the sticks doesn't matter.

I added another two lengths of chain and a 24" grill from an old webber smokey joe, linking the chains to three points of the grill. Works fantastic for grilling and the grill and kit stow behind the frame of my alice pack perfectly. Lashing is good but takes time to wrap/unwrap, this little plate is a must have in my pack.

Seems like if there’s any breeze that the heat won’t rise straight up so it could take an hour to boil a pot of water.
Whether I’m camping in a park, on a hiking trip or on a long distance bicycle trip I like to have multi functions to almost everything I carry. So with the metal piece at the top I would sharpen the edges so it can be used as a ninja star if needed for self-defense.

As an alternative, I could just lash three sticks together with a shoestring I borrow from my hiking boot. For the chain I would carry a small box of large metal paper clips. Hook all of the paper clips together for the desired length of chain, then attach a fishhook to hold a cooking pot.

just a tip for everyone . If you want to make your own . weld three washers together and buy you a little chain or use paracord to hold your pot .. Nice kit btw .

Thank you, Philip. I so agree. It's one of those things that sounds like a good gadget then turns out to be just okay without the legs. So far the concenses is to use rebar or wooden dowels for the legs to complete the set.

Cant post pictures here but i once upon a time picked up these things call cookin sticks, Wilderness Innovations used to make them, i think you can still see them on the site. They are about 36” long and its two pieces of rebar, and the ends are kinda twisted together so they can spread apart at one end. I’d bet you could get a blacksmith to make some. The use of them is to have a fire ring like you were using today, and place them along one edge, and spread them just far enough apart to set a pot, or skillet on and then push coals under that setup. My thought during your video and your mention of rebar is if you could a fix a 3rd piece of rebar to that setup, it could be used also as a tripod. Just some thoughts.

Thanks for the info on the cooking sticks. Adding a third leg to turn it into a tripod is a great idea.

  • @vincentwesley6343

Certainly you could get by without it and just lash the sticks in true bushcraft style, but I think that where this kit shines is in a situation where you wanted to put up a tripod quickly or maybe you were maybe on a day hike and had little or no cordage to use for lashing, overall, I think it's a good kit but more of a luxury or convenience rather than a necessity, great video.

      re bar

    • @wobblyotteroutdoors
      @wobblyotteroutdoors  3 роки тому

Yes! Rebar. Mega durable. Loads of uses. We did try using half-inch rebar (cause that's what we have) with this particular board and it was a bit too small. Bigger rebar would work better. Lashing would work no matter the rebar size.

Great skills, tools, recording evident here - cooking over a Swedish torch, is that a Mora Eldrid blade there? I can see coming up with perfect sticks at home and taking this on canoe trips, backpacking also. Seems like a windbreak/heat reflector could be tied/wired around two sides and sit in front of the open side: surround the three sides with a gap at the bottom, and we’d have quite a chimney effect (A vertical build, top down burn does not have to get fed very often). Time to check out more Otter Offerings …🚣🏼🏕🦦

Oh my. Thank you kindly, Robert. There are many wonderful things to unpack in your comment. Yes, that is a Morakniv Eldris. The idea of finding the perfect tripod sticks in advance is simple genius. Love the idea of crafting some type of windbreak wrapped around the tripod to create a sort of chimney! I'm brainstorming ideas now to use in an initial mockup and trial. Excited and hopeful to see how it will work. Appreciate the note about top-down burns not needing to be fed often. AND, a really big thank you for taking the time to comment and seek out more Wobbly Otter videos. So cool!
