      What about using salt...pour salt into the hole, and sit back and wait a spell...the clam with pop out of the sand...to escape the burning salt on its membranes!

    Why do soam people use shovels and those core borer things, but othar people djust sprinkle salt over the hole and the clam comes right up and they grab it? Seams like a lot less work.

    It’s too bad these beaches are closed due to low clam numbers.(not from over harvest) I really would like to get out there and do some digging again. It really a good time!

    Here is how a country boy finds clams. Take you bowling ball with you to the mud flats. Drop the ball on the mud and note where the water spouts up out of the mud. Dig there to get your clam.

      Where I used to live on the coast, people would clam and crab every year. Sometimes there were a lot, sometimes there werent. But it's been going on much longer than the twenty years I've been alive. And I haven't yet heard about the razor clams being in any danger.

    Looked to me like you snagged some steamers! Steamer clams generally have a more oval shape, where razor clams are long skinny guys

      You can make one out of pvc pipe. Very inexpensive and easy to make.

    we catch those by the thousands, here on the East Coast. Its done by boat, with what is called an elevator.

      You are required to take every clam you dig, regardless of it's condition.
      Pouring salt on a clam is the same as pouring one on a slug. It's not legal.

      Chris L. Robinson yes they can move down faster than you can dig. You have to go fast in order to get them. Another method is salting.

      Still a waste of time. All you need is some salt, pour it into the hole, and throw some water down the hole and the critter will come up immediately on it's own, then you just pluck it with your hand.
