Palma de Fuego has been charging all developer a number of impact fees when they develop lots on the island. One of these fees - a park impact fee - has not been fully expended, and has instead been saved for a major project - building a huge park in the hills of the island.
In today's episode, those fees will finally be spent and we'll build, what I believe to be, the largest park ever built in Cities Skylines. We'll also complete the bike highway with the parks funding. I'll also place approximately 1.2 million trees by hand, which will lead to a beautiful forest throughout the park.

Since you place trees individually I would recommend getting a secondary bind for that action, like spacebar for example.
This is a trick that a friend of mine with tremors uses for shooter games since you have to press the mouse button alot in those but I think it could work really well for cs aswell to save your wrist and fingers if they hurt.

It's interesting how hard companies brand the "never frozen" element. Freezing food isn't bad, it's just a lot of frozen food is at the budget end of the market. Lots of things (like many vegetables) are better frozen than "fresh", because the product is frozen at the point of harvest rather than being transported and stored for days or sometimes even weeks in refrigerated storage where it is deteriorating. But people still mentally associate "frozen" with "bad" or "cheap".

Shadows on the road also cause more Salt to be used in the winter to de-ice. You could put a spreader on level 2 when the sun is out vs level 6 when its a cloudy day at the same temperature. The sun really helps break the ice off the road.

Hey! I work in a wilderness in Idaho during the summers, and there are several lookouts within the wilderness. They are generally at the very top of a mountain so that they have a 360 view. Also, fun fact, usually at least two lookouts will always be needed. This is so that when they both report the exact angle the fire is from the lookout, they can triangulate and find quite precise coordinates of the smoke!

This really finishes that island off and took the two disparate urban builds and connected them together. Quick tip for making EVEN BETTER forests (what you did already looks great btw). Add the thick foliage that you normally use for hiding lumpies and bumpies to some of the areas that you planted trees in. When you zoom in, it makes the forest looks SO much thicker and more lush having that little bit of undergrowth.

In regard to fire watch towers, the point of the tower to house a person with a Osborne Fire Finder ( Like a plain table used in surveying ) so going outside and walking over is not actually an option and generally you need 2 towers to get an accurate fix then the location is radioed in so water bombers or hot spot crews can go and put out the fire or fire cuts can be made to prevent spread using heavy equipment or explosive's . That said its the height of the top of the tower not the base that matters. Today drones are often also used along with IR satellite images that can spot the fire even when no smoke is visible over extremely large areas (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS)) .

I love vanilla series more than any other - no weird LUTS, or excessively conflicting aesthetics between content creators, and it's really easy to feel like you could take what you see and do it your way without too much of a learning curve/aggravation. And Verde Beach is my favorite of all vanilla builds on all of UA-cam - and I've been to virtually every one (or close to!). I'd love to see a sister city either in CS2 (or in CS1 as a throwback playthrough later on). Maybe even MORE Utopian, or the opposite: super realistic. Excited for the future of this series, wherever it goes!

I think Verde Beach is your best build. Occasionally you get lost in the weeds, so having the limitations of vanilla allows you to accept more imperfection and maybe some more creativity to close to what you want. That final zoom out of the entire city, it just feels like a real city. Beautiful.

We were just at the Grand Canyon, and I think what you did with the trail up the mountain was reasonable. One thing you might consider is having a path that goes around and up the mountain? Would recommend addition of benches or seats along your paths, particularly the big switchback and the all abilities paths, as well as a few more bathrooms. For the weird road you reconfigured, consider adding a wildlife corridor bridge like the other one nearby. As it is, that island you've created with the road network would be very dangerous for any big animals to get to and from across a 4 laner from the big forest.

You should take a look for inspiration at Lions Head and Signal Hill in Cape Town, specifically the trails that go up as the topography is quite similar to this park! Also how cars tend to line the streets in sort of informal parking near the trails. Lions Head has a path that runs entirely around the mountain in a spiral, with a 'ladder' that shoots directly up for part of it for the more adventurous. That would look a lot nicer than the switchbacks!

It's fantastic to see this park finally developed. One addition I do think would be reasonable though would be to add an additional path that would take people out to the volcano. While it would be one of the longer hikes it's such a unique feature that some visitors would definitely want a closer look at.

124 Hours. Looking at the current VB youtube playlist that's how much content you've produced developing this city into the gold standard for Vanilla builds. Watching someone who's an expert at something do something they love has always been a guilty pleasure of mine, watching you create a city that feels so real and perfectly imperfect has been an incredible delight. With the system reaching it's limits and the future of VB looking to close soon, I wanted to say that I am glad that I chose to spend those 125+ hours with you in Verde Beach, Clearwater County, Bluffside Crossing and wherever CS 2 takes us.
If I had one request for city wrap up, a city tips style scorecard would be pretty cool. Take a good hard look at your work and see what you did well on, what you could improve on, and stuff that you think didn't get enough attention. Maybe get someone else to do the review for a non-biased perspective if they're willing.
    Cheers!

My feedback (I may also put this in the community post, since this video is a tad old.):
You could put wells and firewood boxes by the campgrounds and cabins.
You could put restrooms up near the top of the mountain.
You could put an information booth (under city park assets) near the lighthouse, or at least a historical marker, so that people have info about the lighthouses history readily available.
You could put benches at a few of the switchbacks up the hill, as well as a few along your 'all ages and abilities trails'.

If there's one thing I'd add...I've seen a few separate comments about a cable car system for the mountain and that combined with the switchbacks gave me flashbacks of my trip to Machu Picchu. The whole time I was in those terrifying buses that take those sharp turns to get up to the site I was thinking "god I wish they had a cable car here instead". If it's possible I think that would be a super cool asset to the park. If not...maybe just some benches for the long hike up!

Thanks so much and can't wait for the new Cities Skylines 2 series

I know I might give you a hard time about all the quay walls now and then, but for real this has been such a good series. When you started, I had just finished my PhD in Agricultural Entomology, and nearly 3 years later it's so cool to see how far it's come. I can tell that you're also someone who really enjoys what they do (why else would you play games about your job), and I really empathise with this. I've worked in entomology and ag science for the last 2.5 years and I've loved it. I lost my job about 3 months ago and watching your videos has been a big help in getting me through the tough period of looking for new work. Hoping I'll find something new soon that I enjoy just as much, and I can't wait to see what's next for this channel after Verde Beach.

"Don't let perfect be the enemy of good"
You're the first person I've heard say this, and you say it a lot, lol. I like it. I've gotten frustrated and quit many things over the years because I couldn't get it the way I wanted, but I think if I adopted this mindset I'd be much happier with games and life in general.
Thanks for all the videos, btw, you got me into C:S a couple years ago, and again now. I've been catching up your playlists, the same exact ones that originally taught me the game. :)
Oh, and thanks for the saying, I'll try it out.

There are more than 400 comments while I type so I doubt you'll see it, Phil. This series was what got me into your channel. I got hooked because Verde Beach is in the same map I used for my very first city in the game, in 2015. I was curious about how different they both would be (mine is obviously a mess of disrespecting the topography lol) Your channel got me (probably all of us?) through the pandemic and now through the endless Ukrainian war so I want to say thank you for all the work an effort you put in your videos and your storytelling. You always say that it is a privilege for you that we watch. The privilege of being able to see such quality content is ours

Hey Phil! Long time listener, first time caller. You could extend the gondola route from the space needle thing up the mountain! That would allow all to access to the top of Verde Beach’s tallest point.

    Phil,
First of all, thank you so very much for all of your content. It's so comforting just to sit down with a cup of coffee and watch you play.
Verde Beach feels like an old friend by now and it will be sad to see it go. However, all good things come to an end, as the saying goes - you've really pushed the envelope on what you can do with the game, and it shows 😊
I'm very much looking forward to seeing what you can do with C:S2. I fully expect you to have broken the limits by this time next year 🤣

One thing I did to cheat parka was add “hiking routs” in them, which attracted many people.
It’s a shame to see Verde Beach go. I’d love to see a good old fluxtrance-style city overview at the end, where you follow vehicles across the city and take some nice drone angles of the city at various times of day. A great way to send off this old city, and welcome the new era of CS2!

14:42 Might be too late now, but when you panned up that hill it made me think a little bit of the Rock of Gibraltar with it being a sharp high spot on the tip of a coastline. Like the Rock, I wonder if you could give this hill a military history; covered in tunnels and old gun emplacements. That could be really cool.

I'm not a firefighter myself but I do watch a lot of videos on watchtowers. They are typically built at the highest point because they need a line of sight to be able to notify others of the location of the fire. If they needed to walk to the peak to see over it, they wouldn't be able to use the Osbourne Fire Finder that is in the tower, it's not something you can just pick up and take with you.

Honestly, that bike road through the mountainside should basically not exist. It's redundant to the highway connection running along the shore, which would see lane upgrades way before you carved fifty metres through a mountainside to connect basically the same two points :)

    • @simongeard4824
      @simongeard4824 8 місяців тому +1

Yeah, I was thinking the same... that road just makes no sense. Hugely expensive to build, no zoning along it, and not much traffic because everyone will just keep going along the highway to the other intersection. The only advantage is that it provides redundancy, but it would be hard to justify the cost on that basis alone.

This looks amazing, but what I'd do for that part that goes to the lighthouse -- if you can -- is add a cable lift car because it could be more accessible for people who couldn't get up that path!

  • @PragmaticWisdom
    @PragmaticWisdom 7 місяців тому

CPP, you had missed a massive opportunity to wrap the mountain in a far more suitable path that spirals more gently up-wards.
It makes it longer, but you could have offered scenic lookouts around it offering views over to the Volcano seeing as that Mountain is taller than it.
The switchback is effective, just doesn't look nice.

CPP! My current build is in need of a big park. I’ve noticed as I build the downtown area up it lacks green space. Luckily there’s a big empty lot north of the area so I plan on building a large city park there. As I’m looking for ideas and inspiration, I come across your video! ❤ the lore you build is amazing so I wasn’t shocked at the amount of detail you put into your park. It looks awesome!

Not a wildland firefighter, nor have a worked at a watch tower, but I've hiked to some of them in the Cascades. They won't always be at the absolute high point -- that would be impractical -- but they're almost always at a local high point. That is to say, they won't be *on* a slope, they'll be at the top of the slope, and the only way to reach a higher point will be to go downhill before going back uphill.
Essentially, you should have a 360-degree view. :)

Hoping you revisit the bike lanes on the island with a little more detail. I think you really catered to the tourist aspects of the island with the bike highway giving them a nice scenic ride, however missed the opportunity enhance the connectivity of the island for locals. The park routes are long and elevated, not great for bikers, the eastern route on flat land has no connection to playa de matero, and the only decent direct route to San Riviera is the tunnel on the west end of the island. I think a great route to add for bikes would be in the center of playa de matero going north through the industrial park and national park. Its a centralized direct route on flat land that i think would of gotten the most attention in development due to the access and ease of not needing to grade

Idea for the final episode of Verde Beach AND for your C:S2 starting build. An absolutely massive natural disaster, such as a giant meteor. Nono hear me out. For C:S2 Verde postapocalypse. - If you rebuild the map/geography but add a huge crater as the centerpiece. It could be good restart, rebuilding, renewal! Bouncing back from disaster. Verde Crater City! A monoment to the past and a metropolis for the future. A symbol, a statement, a new game :)

My dad is a state forrester in one of the highest risk forrest in central europe. In the last 20 year they set up one of the most high tech wild fire monitoring systems in the world. That lowered the actual risk to loss of life, property and value in trees significally. Depending on living wildlife like breeding birds the watchtowers (that don't need people anymore just sensors) are only placed on the highest spots. I would suggest that the old lighthouse would be retrofit with sensors and probably telecom towers.

That switchback trail on the hill reminds me of some of the trails we have in the Olympic Peninsula. Fun fact, I had a friend in Boy Scouts who was trail running down a trail like that and missed a turn. Slipped and fell about 30 - 40 feet down a sheer hillside and had to be air lifted out with a sprained back. Not a lot of safety features when you're that deep in the woods. They kind of hope that you'll have self preservation and common sense, which teenagers tend to lack.
