The Sony a7V and a1ii are seemingly well overdue. The current cameras (a7IV and a1) lack more advanced features that have been in other Sony cameras for a long time now. But . . . the predecessor cameras are still atop their respective market segments. The a7IV has a 33MP sensor against Nikon's and Canon's 24MP sensors in that segment. The a1 sits alone in its segment in high-res, high frame rate RAW image production. (And Canon's R1 doesn't even try.) When Sony decides the time is right, I'm expecting the a7V and a1ii to be amazing cameras. It almost seems that Sony is holding back -- sandbagging the competition.
It seems that in still photography, technological advancements have reached a plateau, with recent camera innovations primarily focusing on video features. I'm quite content with my A7R V, as it meets all my needs for high-quality still images.
Sony was in 1-2 year life span as they had a lot of mirrorless improvements and were trying to build market share. As they have become the leader in tech their need to bring things rapidly has decreased. I think they also realized that offering a new cameras so quickly actually made many buyers hesitate thinking the replacement was coming shortly. Controlling Nikon’s sensors and not seeing much in new tech from Canon, allowed Sony to slow its pace while still retaining market share. The new Canon R5 ii will likely lead Sony to show something soon in the mid range, but the R1 at 24mp has given Sony time to really work on their next gen Flagship.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker good money on a stacked or semi stacked sensor - A7 33mp + w/ improved DR and video. A7R6 100mp, and A1 ii 50mp Global Shutter with improved DR over a9iii 2024-2025.
In the UK, the grey market prices of the A7R V, A7 IV and the R6 II have dropped massively over the last few months, even matching or dropping below their dollar prices in the US. Its absurd how much more we have to pay for cameras compared to the US and Asian markets. In the past, these kind of price drops have been a decent indicator that there is something new on the horizon, so there is a very good chance that your information is accurate.
Simon, you always include links for ordering through US channels but neglect any in Canada. I am about to order from Downtown camera in Toronto and wonder if you have a link for them. Thank you
Perhaps, the a74 was a surprise getting a big $500 price increase and it has held steady ever since. Sony customer don't mind and its working so they are making a good profit margin on it.
Maybe the majority of people are finding camera prices still too high and in conjunction with phone camera advancements are choosing phones over cameras. Maybe this is resulting in the dropping of camera prices too?
This would be great, but my guess is ICL mirrorless cameras will actually rise in price in coming years as the market continues to consolidate around professionals and semi-pro photographers and videographers, with smartphone cameras utterly devouring the casual/hobbyist markets. Basically: Canon/Sony/Nikon et al will seek to make up in pricing what they are losing in volume. They could still do something of a "razor blades model" where the shavers (the camera bodies) remain affordable while the "blades" (the lenses) are priced to the stratosphere. Canon already looks to be doing something like this. We shall see.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow's (?) R5ii video. At moderate ISO's, the original R5 is definitely less noisy (2 1/3 stops at some settings!) It's never simple, is it?
I can't believe Sony hasn't dropped the price on the A7-III significantly by now. While it's a great camera with specs that stand up against some of today's models, there are weak spots where Sony has made vast strides in AF and AI that are rapidly eating away at it's value in my view. At one point it was a strong consideration of mine when I was convinced it was time to leave Nikon. I was sure that Canon would allow full frame third party lenses soon so I went with their system. Sadly, here we are two years later and only Sigma ACS-P lenses are available. Meanwhile, Sony has many 3rd party makers creating great glass for their cameras, but NONE of them ever seem to go on sale! Until now I guess.
Actually as of this moment... A7SIII is discounted at $3,198 at both Adorama and B&H. I called this on a previous video comment.... the clearance has begun, ahead of announcements just prior to preorder of Canon shipping dates. It's coming... and it will completely steal the minor thunder of the R5II
In theory, the a7V should be the perfect camera for my uses. But I noticed in the leaked specifications that a mechanical shutter is not mentioned. Judging by the a7CII/R, it may be unlikely to be included. Not sure I'd want to buy a camera without a fully mechanical shutter.
Went from A7s I to A7iv ages back after it released. What Id love is an A7siv for video work, wondering what theyll come up with. I dont think Ill get my wishlist for it.
I thought they went back on that and are making the entire new fx line, including the upcoming fx9ii...again the 12.1 mp sensor. It's not a normal 12.1 mp though. Pull back the color filter array and there are 45mp. 6k means 4 times 21-24mp when you pull back the color filter array. No video camera has mp like that, using them all or not. Might not be necessary, considering the r5ii still doesn't have the dr in the highlights as the a7siii...looking at some pre...side by sides. Shadows look a little better on the r5ii before 12,800 then it goes to the ol a7siii again. So much for 16.5 stops...lol. Cine D actually tests the dr on the A7Siii to near match the venice when both are on XAVC BTW. Not an easy camera to beat, so they are probably thinking they have more time than they thought with every inferior camera that comes out. I say inferior in high res dr...the one spec that matters above all else so long as you have a decent codec.
@errol3184 I think the a7siii was already 48mp qcfa running in combined mode only. I just want open gate, and usbc ssd recording or cfb. And if I'm being really out there, CMY filter array instead of RGB, since you can calculate RGB from CMY and it'd let in 2x as much light per pixel.
Simon, what do you think it would be the massive announcement that will change the camera market? Andrea Pizzini talk about that a couple of times, but he don't let go any hint except that's not about Sony and that he would need to create a new web page. So maybe a new player enter the game. That could explain why Sony need to get more users now. Andrea said the announcement it will be in September or October if I remember correctly.
To me it is workflow, and having the camera think more like me. Canon's new R5 II autofocus is what I am thinking about. We don't need more pixels, or faster autofocus. Reducing the time it takes to processor or acquire while improving the hit rate :) that's what matters.
The purpose of this video is for you to repeat rumors that you have heard on other channels. Will probably be the A7S4 first then A75. As far as the Camera Wars, its like Apple and Samsung....they come out with similar models every 2 years? Whichever one comes out has the best tech then the other one catches up. How many people have the money to switch brands? I'm happy for those people that can and can afford the latest gear. I'm rocking a Fuji XT3 and hoping to get a A73 next year and a Sony 24-50 F2.8.
@alldreamsmedia I do love the Fuji for the colors...I'm a Dad Photographer you know? Post photos 3 months later but I do print! Dont need to edit much which is nice. The freaking autofocus sucks balls, though(no offense to anyone if that is their thing lol) I have a 8 year old who skateboards....you out a Xt3 on burst and you get maybe 60% keepers. Could I get better with it? Sure. Would I rather have the way better autofocus? He'll yeah! Thing is that then you HAVE to edit and shoot raw. For street stuff and everyday carry, Fuji is great..new models are better but still not up to snuff. Cheers and Happy shooting !
Hi I really enjoy your channel. I'm repeating myself, probably because I'm old and living in the past and don't know how to check your reply. I'll ask again anyway. Just wondering if the Canon R5 giveaway is still a thing. Maybe I missed something. Keep up the good work I'm still plugging away with my 5D mark ll. Tom
I don’t really care about Sony but I do shoot Nikon and Canon. Ordered the R5 Ii with 24-104 f4 . I owned the A1 and sent it back…never had a more uncomfortable camera, their dials literally cause pain and the output had zero character. Love Nikon and Canon!!
I’m not sure that it’s shocking that the a7R v could be up for a refresh - they refresh that historically on two to three year schedules approximately (with the only 3-year being in 2022, otherwise the a7iv would have been expected in 2021 - and there were reasonably reasons that could have been delayed). A7 (2013), a7ii (2015), a7iii (2017), a7iv (2019), a7v (2022). By all accounts, this year or next would be very much in line with historical releases I think.
I think realistically, Sony isn't going to refresh any of these cameras ( Sony a7IV, Sony Alpha 1, or Sony a7 RV) in 2024. This is my opinion. I wish they would because I am mainly a Sony shooter. I just don't see it happening this year frankly. I hope I am wrong.
Hi Simon, it's very unlikely for Sony to not release anything this fall, but this single retailer may just want to clear a large stock without insights of what Sony will do .. even without an imminent successor of the a7R5, it's clear it will lose some market share to the stacked Z8 & R5ii rivals ..
You might be right. It's hard to say for sure. I'd be surprised if we don't get a new sony this fall, one in the winter and other in the second quarter.
Hi I'm 8 days from the future and I predict Sony will release two new 1" camcorders that have Log that can be used along side their larger sensor cameras. 😛
Of course autumn is the season, it’s Christmas buying season, that remains the biggest buying time of the year. You said these cameras are already on clearance, why no links to them?
It is clear for me that Sony will continue A75 and A7S4. Manufacturer doesn’t have to do as much marketing during the selling cycle, as you already noticed. Nowdays the influencers and people who buy cameras and want’s to share the experience of using this gear are the best marketers. Sony didn’t have to do much in terms of telling people to buy A7IV. I guess some of the brilliant movies like „The most cinematic camera” did this job, and at the end of selling cycle gave Sony a big punch. But now it’s time to refresh the market.
Hi! I don’t think it has something to do with refreshing of cameras. I think it has more to do with the launch of the Canon R5 ii. Sony is competing with Canon for the number 1 spot, by discounting their cameras they can cut on Canon’s sales. But that’s just my opinion. All beat
