Did it Survive, or is it Time to Change? Ecoflow Smart Generator

  • Going into the travel season, there was a lot of items in the rig that were brand new, and also new to me. Technology is not something I planned to incorporate into this rig, but wow has it made my life easier. The Smart Generator is one item I was very excited about, but certainly had my concerns with. Out of the box it started right up, but the overall operation of the device did come with a slight learning curve. You can use it without the smart features, but if you want just a regular generator I would recommend going a different route just to save yourself some money. If you are in a position to use the features, primarily speaking about charging the Ecoflow products, this is far superior to anything else available on the market. My initial concerns were mostly based around the operating RPM, and the reliance on a computer, but after 240 hours of use, and increasingly better performance, this generator has earned my confidence.

    Thank you for sharing this. I had no idea that Eciflow made this. The smart generator + power bank is a fully productized version of a system that I was planning to build for the off-grid cabin that I want to build some day. I'm sure it isn't cheap, but compared to the cost and time I'd have to invest to build something like it myself, the price will probably be worth it. Keep up the great work. If you are moving most days your truck alternator can charge a large lithium battery bank at 100+amps per hour of driving. You can retire (or keep as backup) the generator and the gas cans and whole process of trying to keep your batteries charged while parked with a noisy gen. You just need to confirm your alternator and wiring is up to spec and add a Precision Circuits Lithium Battery Isolation Manager to properly charge the battery bank without overheating your alternator.

    • @maxmeister747
      @maxmeister747 5 місяців тому

      But if you are not moving most days or your alternator only does 60amps like in my t3 and you are relying almost exclusively on solar then a generator is useful. But yes, people underestimate the charging ability of their vehicles and what they can do with a big lithium battery and inverter.

      There is a compelling reason for long distance power transmission (i.e, the power grid) being AC and not DC, though.

    • @michaeljames3229

      @Ganiscol ya but the application needs are SO far apart. Powering a city or town is completely different. However, an individual home could run on DC, but it has to create its own power to charge batteries, electronics ect.

    If you basically move each day, it would be better to use a DC-DC charger via your truck using either a heavy duty alternator or a second alternator.
    I have a converted Ford Transit with a built-in 4KW gas-powered generator. It only charges a max of 16 Amps for my LFP batteries. The DC-DC charging runs my engine at idle, is quiet and sips gas and charges at 48 amps. Two disadvantages to this are, it won't run my furnace, it won't run my A/C unit and it isn't particularly good to idle engines. I supplement the charging with solar panels. My batteries DO run my furnace/water heater. I never use the gas generator, the microwave and only use A/C while plugged in. Something to consider.

    I am pretty disappointed that the ecoflow system is so proprietary. I like my charger, inverter and batteries separate for space reasons and modularity. With my inability to afford ecoflow batteries and with this generator being the only dual fuel generator for sale in my country it is disappointing. I wish it could just have a 12v dc-dc charger instead of this fast charging thing so you could plug in an anderson connector and set what battery you have and the current you want to draw instead of having to go to ac power and then back to dc with a charger.
