Daylight sensors do have a unique use: synchronization. This is critical for item group based wireless Redstone (need to dispense items in the same game tick for it to work). Definitely not intended behavior, but it's got a place in my heart.
I also use trapped chests for item input chests. Freezes the hopper beneath which has saved a few tools from my trash disposal system. Daylight sensors do have a few niches for automatic lighting systems, sugar cane/bamboo farm timers, and detecting someone breaking through blocks.
I use a daylight sensor in my enderpearl statis chamber so I can tp back to base by sleeping in a bed and skipping the night. This wouldn't be possible without the daylight sensor as far as I am aware.
the fact that spawner minecarts exist hints to a paralell timeline where the spawners in mineshafts were put in minecarts, and the chests remained in their placed block form, instead of vice versa like in our timeline
I also like that they used him as an example. Also he didn't go anywhere! I was a fan as a kid and I still am, the letsplay is literally still going XD.
I think they should update it or make a new block related to it that functions as a photoresistor, only letting a circuit through past a certain semi-dialed in time or as an actual LED solar panel, outputting less power as the night goes on
Spawner minecarts were cutting edge before command blocks could actually place blocks. Recursive spawners spawning falling sand entities that bring blocks into being, that was used in some of the oldest "modern" adventure maps, like early Hypixel stuff. Now, things are much more easier, of course, but it is kinda nostalgic seeing them.
daylight sensors are also used to synchronize clocks. for example to synchronize the wireless redstone by 2no2name it needs to have synchronized clocks so you use a daylight sensor.
Daylight sensors were also used for Y-buds, but they removed that in 1.14, as a result of the light engine changes. Also, you can synchronise clocks automatically, but daylight sensors are useful if you have 2Hz or 1Hz transmission.
being around for the 1.5 update, it’s honestly probably one of the things that put me down the rabbithole that eventually led me to where i am now perusing a cs degree. 11 year old me went crazy with that update
This was the first update I remember, and I remember *a lot* about it. I remember the WIP hopper texture, I remember when the daylight sensor got it’s moon cycle mode, I remember when quartz was added, I remember when the dropper was added, I remember when the minecarts with tile entities (+tnt -chest) were added, I remember when the weighted pressure plates were added, I remember how everyone forgot how weighted pressure plates work 2 snapshots later, I remember when trapped chests were added and how it was a big deal that now there was a way to place chests next to each other without them connecting (as well as giving map makers a good way to mess with unobservant players by running a redstone line behind a trapped chest), I remember when comparators were added and updated and how people only knew what they did by directly reading the update log, I remember when they made comparators able to read the value of containers and how everyone immedietly forgot about the add and subract modes, I remember when people found out comparator clocks existed, I remember how skeletons had a major glowup, I remember how slimes now actually existed outside of a handful of chunks per world, I remember container renaming, I remember how they made dispensers do like 10 times as much stuff so that they could add droppers, I remember how they got rid of the liquid cheese and replaced it with lava :( (but then they brought it back in Love and Hugs :) (in name only :( )), and I, of course, remember how they massacred bonemeal and pretty much lobotomized them forever :(
Spawner minecarts were actually quite insane. Way back before 1.7 and the introduction of the /setblock command it was the only way to place/remove blocks with falling sand entity (albeit looking extremely goofy and requiring a lot of experience to work with) Sethbling's showcase of a map utilizing this concept to its fullest is a hood classic
Never had a clue about how red stone works, but I absolutely adore charisma and editing in your videos. You are that one UA-camr who got me invested in a random niche. And I love it. Always waiting for your new videos because they are super entertaining and interesting, keep it up!!!!
I've been play minecraft since 2012 and I've never even noticed spawner minecarts were added so I'd say they got more time than they deserved in this video.
Trapped chests are technically not completely useless, but their use being exclusive to being the only unmovable transparent redstone redirector definitely gives that impression. Edit: I wrote double chests
If you meant trapped chests they were extremely useful before 1.13 when you couldn't place double chests directly next to each other and had to alternate trapped and normal chests, and even now they're still useful as they lock any hopper below them while the chest is open
@@madiaw5553 Nope, double-chests. Minecraft had problems with placing three chests in a row for years and years because the chest block would literally just merge the inventories of any other adjacent chests, meaning if you clicked the one in the middle it would basically be a triple-chest. Obviously this was a terrible bug, so for years you simply couldn't place a chest next to an existing double-chest of the same type.
A redstone build incorporating structure blocks and command blocks to create something would be cool. What ive done before is put a set of 4 (or however many) structure blocks in one structure block, allowing me to load up an absolutely massive structure instantly. Only annoying part is getting all the cords down….
I started playing Minecraft Java in early 1.5, and even though I never really learned redstone all those components were fun to mess around with. It was the perfect mix of simplicity and complexity, such a fun time...
0:12 I feel that's the wrong perspective. The fun thing about Minecraft back then was the limitations. You had very limited tools, and this bred interesting and intelligent ways of achieving your goals, whatever they may be. Just look at all the cool stuff people made in early versions! Now almost everything has a specific, intentional, easy way of doing it, which means you don't have to use your intelligence much at all. By adding all these options, you discourage people from thinking outside the block, and you end up limiting people to the intended path. It becomes like every other game.
I get where you are coming from, but saying people are limited to the intended path is just straight up wrong. By adding so many options, people have many tools to innovate, but they still have to innovate! Making a 3x3 piston door is certainly easier now then back in the day. But making it smaller, faster and having cool animations still requires so much creativity and skill with redstone. Cauldrons and composters werent meant to be movable one directional power sources, jukeboxes werent meant to be a solid, power emiting, redstone redirecting container block. Its what people do with the tools provided, thats what determines if something can be innovative. Minecraft doesnt have a predetermined solution for everything, and blocks dont have one single use in one single contraption. Its still the game from all those years ago, you still have to innovate, just in a different way. I now realise I wrote an entire essay my apologies
Honestly before hoppers, on bukkit servers we praised craftbook for the signs that put items into a chest xD. Also I remember the old design for repeaters using blocks, redstone torches and wire. xD so much fun back then xD Daylight sensors I found to be useful in terms of speciifcally activating a farm every morning and every evening (twice a day). but thats because I specifically wanted it harvested during those times. (control of how much im getting tbh) but meh Spawner minecarts are amazing for spigot plugins and all. set them up to spawn any specific mobs, etc. or like the gamemode 4 command block thing for moveable spawners (I recreated into a plugin for sake of efficiency and removing the lag xD) they were great for doing that stuff. but eh
People underestimate the importance of the redstone torch. Without a not gate, you can't really do anything logical other than sending a signal to turn stuff on and off, and you can't even do that more than 15 blocks away
4:15 ive never been so offended by a statement I 100% agree with randomised piston activations despite given a signal at the same time makes me cry inside
Hey I used a daylight sensor to count 2 days passing in my base because I think that was the average time for crops to grow? So I used that as a cheap automatic farm to drop water from 1 water source to wash away all the crops.
I like the script of the video. The subject is interesting and this was overall a fun watch. I would just say that the pacing was rather fast at times so it was hard to keep my brain on track and enjoy the well written comedy. (Because by that time it was two jokes later :c ) Cheers !
I used daylight Sensors and pistons to send redstone signals down in a calculator I built. The problem is that you have to disable day night cicle for it to work.
“Quartz, the whitest block in minecraft. Found in the deepest dephts of hell.” if you included something about a natural habitat, that would have been a national geographic documentary
i was hoping so hard this video was aboult 1.5 when i read the tittle. was the first version i started playing and the memories and nostalgia do be great
I think they should make redstone components upgradable with copper, so you can choose specific things a redstone template component can do in redstone by using a copper each time which would also finally make copper useful.
I'm sorry, there are SPAWNER MINECARTS? Ignoring my blatant confusion over this discovery - great video as usual! For someone who doesn't understand redstone, it's very insightful. (Ps. Your channel in general made redstone a lot less intimidating and made me start actually building with it! So thank you for that if you happen to read my comment!)
So, am I actually the only one using daylight sensors for redstone contraptions? Like a time specific hidden door that cannot be activated if it was either day or night, and a light switch system for trapped chamber rooms to generate hostile mobs? No? I guess this is fine.
truly the redstone rant of all time
Jaja lol xD

Yes it’s not crafty
Daylight sensors do have a unique use: synchronization. This is critical for item group based wireless Redstone (need to dispense items in the same game tick for it to work). Definitely not intended behavior, but it's got a place in my heart.
1.5 gave us zero-ticks? That alone would probably qualify it as the best update for redstone ever.

The trapped chest thing is actually genius
holy shit how did I never think of that
I use a daylight sensor in my enderpearl statis chamber so I can tp back to base by sleeping in a bed and skipping the night. This wouldn't be possible without the daylight sensor as far as I am aware.
the fact that spawner minecarts exist hints to a paralell timeline where the spawners in mineshafts were put in minecarts, and the chests remained in their placed block form, instead of vice versa like in our timeline
Using a daylight sensor to power a command block to clear rain has unlocked a core memory within me
0:52 that brought back memories. Etho was a big part of my childhood.
I also like that they used him as an example. Also he didn't go anywhere! I was a fan as a kid and I still am, the letsplay is literally still going XD.
Daylight sensor update their power output exactly every 20gm and they are all synchronized. That mechanic has a use in wireless redstone.
Yeah, the only issue comes from beds and servers, one time skip can damage a lot of systems reliant on daylight sensors
@@JamesTDG oh yeah that's a problem
I think they should update it or make a new block related to it that functions as a photoresistor, only letting a circuit through past a certain semi-dialed in time or as an actual LED solar panel, outputting less power as the night goes on

Yep, i remember watching sethbling and others make some seriously cool stuff with them. They could also act as player detectors as well
daylight sensors are also used to synchronize clocks. for example to synchronize the wireless redstone by 2no2name it needs to have synchronized clocks so you use a daylight sensor.

Technically all minecraft updates changed minecraft forever
You could also consider each update a new game. Meaning that every Minecraft version is kept unchanged forever.
inverted daylight sensors are good for putting on top of redstone lamps to make street lights that only turn on at night ^^
being around for the 1.5 update, it’s honestly probably one of the things that put me down the rabbithole that eventually led me to where i am now perusing a cs degree. 11 year old me went crazy with that update
3:42 Seeing that comparator XOR gate not function drives me nuts
Imagine if daylight sensors got buffed to work more as a way to detect light levels, so you could communicate a signal via light.
This was the first update I remember, and I remember *a lot* about it. Actually they aren't even the only ones to do that, lecterns can be used for the same thing
@Luaa I think you mean single chest because it will all convert to double chest so you need to alternate
@@madiaw5553 Nope, double-chests. I didn't expect to hear something like this for another 5 or 10 years.
I love that you used "It's really quite simple", since Mumbo actually did make a video just explaining the Comparator, IIRC.

Hi, spmzocker here :)
I feel truly honered to be mentioned in your video!
Thanks for the credit😁

Quartz... the "modern house" material, that building style is kinda funny in retrospect.

the other use of trapped chests: giving a few seconds to NOT put your items into a trashcan
7:46 Spawner Minecars were heavily used in map making before command blocks were a thing.
Very very happy to see you show ethoslab, feels like folks forget him these days, despite being one of the most important Minecraft pioneers
Crafty + Purplers = amazing
I also use trapped chests when making an input into a hopper chain, so if you accidentally put something in you can take it out easily
this is by far one of the videos ever
Definitely
absolutely.
I think we just got a new modernisation with the crafter
that quartz advertise was awesome
I would like a full refund on my quartz, I didn't receive batteries and I'm also in hospital with serious medical conditions.

I guess weighted pressure plates are so niche (especially post-entity-cramming) that they weren't even worth mentioning, LOL.
