Excellent talk! Very useful to point out the covert racism that our society, specifically the socio-legal system continuously uses, yet ignores. My only point of criticism is regarding the notion that with rap "the more violent, and misogynistic the better", I think this is only true for mainstream rap. That is the rap that reaches the masses, which is through record companies, largely owned by older, white, males. There is rap out there that challenges stereotypes and misogyny. However, these artists are probably less likely to receive million dollar contracts, unless they change their music to fit what the companies want.
Becky Hayes I love this comment, as an underground hip hop artists because my biggest thing is not to be a stereotypical style mcee, even though I have some songs that are different, however lyrical and the message is important. Everything this woman argued is 100% true. The hard part is what do you do when you shoot a music video with lyrics like this and the artist is arrested 2 weeks later for first degree murder (like we have). And when kids are dying by the dozens from violence in your city (Chicago). How are you supposed to think then?
so what about the children dying in our schools by the 100s because of gun violence, what i am suppose to think? I am so tired of people using Chicago as so some sort of example?
Yeah because of poverty and low income jobs plus high living expense = survival, and what do people who are broke tend to do to survive? Illegal activity, yeah some make it out with sheer will but some are stuck in a vicious cycle that's been going long and hard since the 80s
I have been listening to rap my entire life, and I am a successful married man, there is nothing that can badly influence a person, some people just need an excuse to do the bad things they do, then they blame it on rap, video games and violent movies.
All Im going to say is this. Lyrics of any genre of Music are genuinely made from the thought like Movie or TV lines or scenes. Also Im going to touch the whole Gun thing Black+Rap+Gun Does Not = Thug It just means another person who have a fuckin gun. Its almost like black people can't be part of the Second Amendment. So I guess when a white person has a gun, its all good? Our whole government forgets that Guns are Tools. Yall having such a big problem with them know you should get rid of them.
Brandon Jackson most people who have guns are convicted of murder, that is why people can't have guns. Most shootings use automatic guns or assault rifles. Both of those guns are meant to kill. You only need a basic pistol to defend yourself.
I took her criminology course at Irvine, she’s an excellent scholar, and she does a great job getting her audience to think critically about all sides of the story.
I completely agree with this woman overall, and what she's arguing, but not so much on some minor points. Eminem would be an obvious example of a white rapper being taken to court, and this happened quite a few times. The "study" that was brought up was also a bit ridiculous, as a rapper is always going to be considered more of a threat than a country singer. Lyrics like that are also more expected in rap songs, and just instantly come across as funny when pictured as the lyrics of a country singer. A lot of rap does also come from areas that are high in violence, with many rappers having a track record, so it does have more "threat" behind it... especially when some pride themselves on being "real". But freedom of speech and expression should be protected, as opposed to landing a person in jail because of "what if".
+PlutøTracks. Comparing Rap to country is like Comparing Heavy Metal to Ska.........Metal has some CRAZY violent lyrics....no one ever prosecuted about that
The reason it’s “dangerous” is because it’s what the kids listen to, they’re impressionable. Music is very, VERY powerful. New music needs some sophistication tbh
TheTroll Mastah - Completely wrong. The violent crime rate has halved since the early 90s despite making rap and other forms of violent entertainment main stream. Rap is an outlet for emotions society expects young men to suppress. You can tell people to suppress emtions, but that doesn't mean they don't still exist.
brother ali krs one immortal technique joyner lucas locksmith hopsin talib kweli common nas... Knowledge not Violence . Life Stories not Glorification .
Misogyny is misogyny. Misandry is misandry. It doesn't matter if it is never spoken or acted on. If you feel compelled to be violent towards someone, there is something wrong with you. It is not ok or justified to be violent or aggressive towards another person or group of people. Hate speech is hate speech. I don't care if it has a nice melody or beat attached to it. We excuse people's violence way too much.
6 years ago I may have agreed with her but today... The music especially gangsta rap has a different kind of ring to it and they are dying by these lyrics and the youth are agressively trying to mimic these words! This generation of music and the young brothers are different breed! That's my 2 cents.. Peace
I don't understand how people can defend rappers and the music genre in general. They want to brag about being violent, murderous, misogynistic, criminals and then want to cry when that's what they are treated like.
Same thing as dark humor. The bad is a front for entertainment not an honest lecture. Like humans mimicking animals they think look cool, they're *trying to look cool* not condoning it.
Dark humor isn't encouraging kids to commit acts of violence, promoting ignorance and a hatred for civil society. And if you consider someone bragging about killing someone over drugs or shoes art then maybe you're the one that needs to reassess their values
So you're trying to use the 1% to defend an entire genre that gained its popularity promoting ignorance, violence, and a hatred for the very same society they're trying to exploit? All they're doing is selling excuses for failure.
Hi all, for those interested, here is a transcript of the talk with annotations by Law Genius: law.genius.com/Charis-e-kubrin-rap-on-trial-transcript-of-tedx-orange-coast-talk-annotated
Dang free speech is free speech! It should be defended! I got in trouble once for drawing a gun in school. I got pulled aside and asked questions by the school counselor with the campus cop in the room and I was just thinking about James Bond when I drew it, no bad intentions lol.Bringing race into the picture gives you the disadvantage though. I remember ICP the rap group got really big for a year in my neighborhood and my parents worrying about it lol. It's not about racism. Rap is the most prominent right now so of course it's going to trump other genres in the stats. I definitely think you should have won the case but much of the research you mentioned focused on the race card where we lost steam on the right to speech. Honestly there will always be racists! I hope that there will always be good hip hop though! If theres no freedom of speech than technically we couldn't have either. Again though, awesome talk. Made me think... Thank you
Freedom of Speech doesn't extent to violent threats. If you say you are going to harm someone that is a verbal assault. That's against the law. A crime.
Jacob Gooch this scenario u went thru is ridiculous but ultimately they wanna keep u seperated. And u got profiled in class because the active shooter tends to look like u Which is 1000% moronic and backwards
True. Moreover, heavy metal is usually seen as even more fictional than country. I have never noticed anything that could potentially be viewed as autobiographical in heavy metal songs - indeed heavy metal has drawn massively from fantasy literature ever since its beginnings in the early 1970s. That may mean that conservative rap critics, if they do notice violence in heavy metal lyrics, see it as a form of fantasy, or a depiction thereof.
I was kicked out of school and put on house arrest for one of my songs. it was a rap about bullying and it's consequemces . I released it 3 weeks after parkland. I was split from all my friends and excommunicated from society. I understand what she means, as a young-is white high school student I realize how lucky my skin color was for me. but I don't condone the results of race. I was still unfairly judged for my song, but I wish I was judged fairly for my color. I should ne been sent to Julie for atleast a year. but no just expelled. Equality of Race is something I stand for. The man that stands next to me should have the same verdict as me for the same charges and case, But that isn't the country we live in. - A white guy from New Hampshire
Rap music in itself is not the cause of crime. A lot of rappers come from crime-ridden communities and their lyrics represent that reality. Also, as someone who is a conservative who happens to listen to quite a bit of rap music, there are some misconceptions about rap music which are there. Some false convictions may have come about due to rap lyrics, but there are many more instances in which rap lyrics is autobiographical. In those instances, the lyrics should be used as evidence.
prisons in the usa are funded by the government and run by private enterprises; which also have a quota that specifies where per prison must have a minimum amount of prisoners at any given moment in time. this forces convictions whether the defendant is innocent or guilty. and of course, who better to imprison than people of an ethnic minority? racism is huge even in super diverse cities like new york, toronto, ottawa, montreal, vancouver, etc. it'll stop 90 years down the road when majority of people are completely mixed and there arent enough folks of our parents and grandparents generation to be acting and teaching racism.
not only that, our probation system has also been privatized, so the incentive to make profit, is to have as many ex=prisoners, coming in and out of probation, but never being free of it, since we pay $60 bones everytime we see our PO, and if we miss three times we are remanded back to jail.. And thats after we already cant get a job because employers, thanks to republicans, can do a criminal background check, and wont hire felons, even ones that have done their time, and served their debt to society. Thaats why its the PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX> And trump, one of the first things him and jeff sessions did, was reverse the de-privatization policies of Obama and made all his rich prison owning buddies, even richer, at our expense..
Oh no, following your logic we need to ban and abandon everything violent, no more heavy metal cuz that’s satanic and demonic, no more psychedelic rock cuz it talks about and promotes drugs, no more country music cuz they talk about outlaws and bandits, no more violent movies, no more violent games, we all should listen to music made for toddlers and cheesy repetitive love songs till we die. Excellent take! 🤡
@Michaell Alexander that's fine. I'm critiqueing the negative aspects of a particular culture. I don't intend to imply that there are no positive aspects. I just think that the glorification of bad things has caused problems that some people don't want to take responsibility for.
I get it freedom of speech and isn’t making direct threats he shouldn’t be charged except for possession of the gun if unlawful. Doesn’t change the fact that rap culture is vile.
A lot of people took Metal too seriously, is that enough of a reason to attack the whole genre? A few dudes got into the satanic stuff a little bit too much, so the whole genre is bad?
I agree that no one should be arrested and condemned for any artistic work (especially draft). How a case was handle with a white man with similar circumstances? Do someone have specific case that I can look into to confirm that “If a white man was doing the same thing it would be different”? Still, great TED talks.

Anyone interested just google Avalanche The Architect and the stories of my matter should appear on the first page and my documentary will be on netflix in May
sonicdoor The "rap community" is an excessively sweeping categorization as I listen to numerous socially conscious rappers who don't simply "praise violence and misogyny," among them Lupe Fiasco, The Coup, Immortal Technique, Brother Ali, Talib Kweli, Jasiri X, Rebel Diaz, dead prez...to name just a few. Not to mention, unfortunately, violence is endemic to nearly all forms of artistic expression in the U.S. (other music genres as well as movies and TV shows), so if we vilify rap, we really need to vilify the rest of it, which I don't see happening. Just watched Game of Thrones for the first time and was taken aback with the violence and misogyny in that show..and haven't heard one complaint about it- nothing but praise. A major double standard in my opinion.
Charis Kubrin The extreme violence and misogyny in Game of Thrones is a representation of the terrible in our society, along with all the character's extreme greed and such. Unless you're saying rap should be viewed as representation of the terrible in our society, Game of Thrones isn't a perfect example. Many other TV shows and movies do this in the same way, but I would agree that a lot of violent words are metaphorical, like, "I just want to kill everyone," is violent, but could say in a social situation without getting weird looks. It's roughly translated into, "Oh my god, I'm so angry!" But misogyny can't be used in that way, and is definitely more common in rap songs than other genres. When it does happen in other genres it does get frowned upon. Did you see the reaction to All About That Bass? I would argue that rap has a stereotype, but at least the most famous of rappers, aren't doing much to take that stereotype down.
sonicdoor Violence and misogyny may get frowned upon in other genres but rap is the *only* form of fictional expression to be treated this way in the courts. Andrea Dennis, a law professor at the Univ of Georgia, did an analysis and found that nearly every single case where defendant authored lyrics have been introduced at trial involved rap lyrics.
sonicdoor Hip Hop has dug itself an odd hole; it's basically tradition to do a "braggadocio" track which a considerable amount of lyrics focus on priding they're sense of masculinity. I think that's were the issue starts. It's hard to be arrogant about your gender specific traits without embracing negative aspects and if you are purely positive it might come off as one dimensional or the dreaded adjective in Hip Hop "corny". We basically limited ourselves into only embracing binary gender roles and the only solution to the praising misogyny that I've heard that sounds probable is to balance it out with more prideful femininity (there are female emcees that could do this, but in order to appear more culturally suited they do tracks that use masculine traits as a source of pride) . If that happens we would still have our tradition and it would be less misogynistic and more or less hedonistic ( not to say the misogyny would disappear it would just be countered by the misandry).
As I said, Republicans and their allies in academia stopped criticising violence in white music in the 1990s around the time of the Republican Revolution. The same is true of movies, if to a lesser degree perhaps. The goal was to attract poor whites who were extremely resentful of blacks possessing even basic political and other rights (as far back as the Fifteenth Amendment) but who nonetheless disliked the economic policies of the Reagan and Bush Senior administrations. That this policy has been a resounding success for the Republicans there can be no doubt, because it has allowed them to pursue extreme right-wing policies for over a quarter of a century and at the same time solidify their base on a basis of racial fear.
Maybe it’s because our legal system is a joke? Maybe because it isn’t about right or wrong, it’s about who can get the better lawyer and who gets more “points” to win the case even if justice isn’t really served.
The IORNY of what she is definitely bringing to light is evident in the FACT that Ice T aka "Cop Killer" has been playing Detective Finn on "Law and Order" for as long as one can remember 😀
Seems like these comments either have people in strong support or poised rejection of her arguments. The critics seem to be trying to pick apart her argument by choosing one thing she said that they didn't exactly like, whereas the supporters aren't discussing or contributing relevant arguments/information, but simply stating support.
This is exactly the question I was asking a group of young incarcerated men. I asked them to explain why I (an old white lady) should not be scared by the hip-hop and gangster rap lyrics. I was preparing a class session for them and found this video. I will use it...but I don't know what conclusions we will draw from the predominantly rural, white and poor young guys who are listening to this kind of music. :-)
thats the irony of the trump voter, is it not??? they glorify rap music, yet vote for the politicians who jail the actual creators of the genre. .ITs like Kid Rock.. He spent years making money off of hip hop as a rap artist, and now in his middle age, he is one of trumps most cultish cult members. PAthetic.
@@raidermaxx2324 What they glorify is heavy metal, which is equally violent as rap, and which in its early years was undoubtedly politically radical like rap.
@@guodade2239 wait, who glorifies heavy metal? also, heavy metal was politically radical?? hardly. Sure, you have the Sepulturas, the Rage Against the Machines, the "one Minute of Silences, but as a definition of a genre, " politically radical" it was not. And i lived it.
Imagine all the Hollywood actors and actresses who have not been put on trial using evidence from the crimes and murders they committed in their films. :(( Yet rap music is not art? This is something which always has baffled me.
I wouldn't agree that the more violent your lyrics are the more respect you have in the rap community. I think it depends on the type of image you are trying to create for yourself as an artist, and what particular group of listeners you are appealing to. On the other hand, many rap listeners never listen to any lyrics that are violent and misogynistic, so this is a poor reflection or statement and should be reconsidered, as it also in turn supports and reinforces negative stereotypes. I would only say its true, the more violent your lyrics are, the more shock value they have and the more attention or press it could garner, often for a short period of time. Again, highly depends on the target audience, I would never qualify that all rap listeners in the larger rap community enjoy violent and misogynistic lyrics.
Music, video games and movies DO NOT make people violent. Proven time and again, violent people gravitate to aggressive media because it resonates with them better. Do people listen to Taylor swift and play super Mario when they're enraged? Media can show you aggressive actions, but they CANNOT pass aggression on to you. The people who listen to aggressive music and do violent things are generally toughened people who already have a violent history, mental problems, or have been pushed to the edge by circumstances.
Ironic I see this after Jay-Z and Meek Mill are fighting for legislation to stop rap lyrics from being used in court. The findings in this Ted Talk don't surprise me but this is Definitely an important & necessary speech. Great work.
What that guy wrote is not okay, end of. Let them booty cheeks hop? Sorry but even if this is supposedly an art form, it has degenerated the literacy and moral judgment of kids and teenagers for decades now. People think rhyming on a beat is new. Teach kids these days to play an instrument, or poetry, not rap. Idolizing ghetto culture is getting people killed and abused. Did jazz ever do that? Or blues? Did heavy metal go that far?
Your viewers can google law and order episode entitled Weeping Willow. That's where the concept came from and ultimately was never used or meant for anyone to see.
I agree and disagree, there are actual statistics that link negative behavior to rap music, most of it is filth, and there is a general difference between the way it effects different CULTURES, if you only have one parent in the home you are most likely to be negatively affected by it, in my personal experience it seems as if some cultures view it as a proper lifestyle while others look at it for what it is, JUST ENTERTAINMENT
So if gangster rap has no influence on criminal behavior, what music is listened to before a drive by? I doubt it's Luther Vandross or Frankie Beverly. Images and music feed our eyes and ears just like food feeds our belly.

I have been listening to rap my entire life, and I am a successful married man, there is nothing that can badly influence a person, some people just need an excuse to do the bad things they do, then they blame it on rap, video games and violent movies.
So you're saying people can be influenced but are only susceptible to 'good' influences?
"Make them Booty cheeks hop!" 😂👏 hearing that from her is so hilarious Love it
All Im going to say is this.
Nuthin' wrong with having a gun, if you use it for defense, or for hunting. Any other use will get you busted eventually.
Comparing Rap to country is like Comparing Heavy Metal to Ska.........Metal has some CRAZY violent lyrics....no one ever prosecuted about that
Incorrect...people used to blame Ozzy and Alice Cooper for teen suicides etc.
Plutotracks Just gonna say, Dont ever compare Rap to Country. Thoughs are two different Worlds. Like comparing Comedy and Horror.
I think he was referring to real Metal like Slayer and Exodus. If the genre is called death metal one would expect horrifying lyrics
Heavy metal musicians were brought to trial for teen suicides while rappers were brought to trial for crimes they are suspected of doing.
But I get your point

Keywords at the end there "liberty and Justice for all", which we've seemed to forget about that.
So false. Words can hurt.
Fantastic talk. One of the better TED talks i've seen.
TEDx talk. TED probably wouldn't deal with this subject.

A crime.
Lol, I thought you meant drew a gun as in took it out of a holster in the hallway.
Lucas Levon lyrics are lyrics how do you know it’s a actual threat or just entertainment ? Music is apart of the entertainment industry after all (;

Also country is usually seen as fictional and rap is seen as autobiographical
Mr. NoSoul You are lucky you weren't in my college, you would have been expelled. Crazy world we live in.
A piece of paper tucked in a book is a terroristic threat?
prisons in the usa are funded by the government and run by private enterprises; which also have a quota that specifies where per prison must have a minimum amount of prisoners at any given moment in time. this forces convictions whether the defendant is innocent or guilty. and of course, who better to imprison than people of an ethnic minority? racism is huge even in super diverse cities like new york, toronto, ottawa, montreal, vancouver, etc. it'll stop 90 years down the road when majority of people are completely mixed and there arent enough folks of our parents and grandparents generation to be acting and teaching racism.
Have you ever wound up in a criminal court room for a crime you didn't commit? Yeah, me neither.
Lmao tell that to South Africa
not only that, our probation system has also been privatized, so the incentive to make profit, is to have as many ex=prisoners, coming in and out of probation, but never being free of it, since we pay $60 bones everytime we see our PO, and if we miss three times we are remanded back to jail.. And thats after we already cant get a job because employers, thanks to republicans, can do a criminal background check, and wont hire felons, even ones that have done their time, and served their debt to society. Thaats why its the PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX> And trump, one of the first things him and jeff sessions did, was reverse the de-privatization policies of Obama and made all his rich prison owning buddies, even richer, at our expense..
except for in vancouver and any other canadian city, the prison system isnt privatized like it is in the states, so that doesnt really apply.
and i can speak from experience, since ive done time in the states, AND ive done time in the provinces..
Soooo.... we should just embrace violent gangster culture and continue to wonder why certain groups of our society are left behind. Got it
Oh no, following your logic we need to ban and abandon everything violent, no more heavy metal cuz that’s satanic and demonic, no more psychedelic rock cuz it talks about and promotes drugs, no more country music cuz they talk about outlaws and bandits, no more violent movies, no more violent games, we all should listen to music made for toddlers and cheesy repetitive love songs till we die.
Excellent take! 🤡
Hip Hop doesn't only offer gangster culture.....your agenda is starting to show.
@Michaell Alexander that's fine. I'm critiqueing the negative aspects of a particular culture. I don't intend to imply that there are no positive aspects. I just think that the glorification of bad things has caused problems that some people don't want to take responsibility for.

Rap lyrics shouldn't be used as evidence, but the rap community praises violence and misogyny. That shouldn't be let go, or forgotten about.
sonicdoor The "rap community" is an excessively sweeping categorization as I listen to numerous socially conscious rappers who don't simply "praise violence and misogyny," among them Lupe Fiasco, The Coup, Immortal Technique, Brother Ali, Talib Kweli, Jasiri X, Rebel Diaz, dead prez...to name just a few.
Charis Kubrin I totally agree, art is rarely ever literal enough to be used as any where near a solid piece of evidence.
sonicdoor Hip Hop has dug itself an odd hole; it's basically tradition to do a "braggadocio" track which a considerable amount of lyrics focus on priding they're sense of masculinity.
TED talk should do the same for movies and other genres of music
As I said, Republicans and their allies in academia stopped criticising violence in white music in the 1990s around the time of the Republican Revolution. The same is true of movies, if to a lesser degree perhaps. The goal was to attract poor whites who were extremely resentful of blacks possessing even basic political and other rights (as far back as the Fifteenth Amendment) but who nonetheless disliked the economic policies of the Reagan and Bush Senior administrations. That this policy has been a resounding success for the Republicans there can be no doubt, because it has allowed them to pursue extreme right-wing policies for over a quarter of a century and at the same time solidify their base on a basis of racial fear.
rap has lowered people into an animalistic state. rap is cancer of the world

So rap music causes violence but not rock music and violent video games?
So if gangster rap has no influence on criminal behavior, what music is listened to before a drive by? I doubt it's Luther Vandross or Frankie Beverly. Images and music feed our eyes and ears just like food feeds our belly.
