@@snail007y069 Yes, UA-cam, indeed, is a social media but whether you use it for good things is up to you. There are good things on UA-cam and there are also bad things too. The choice is yours :)
Only one ive ever had is Facebook and permenantly deleted it three weeks ago. Amazing feeling! People were ripping each other apart saying things on there to other people they didnt know nor would they dare to say in PERSON. I feel very liberated. Also gave up my smart phone as my primary phone and got a land line. Cell stays in car for emergencies only
I was thinking of that I dont remember wha tI was doing all day 20 years ago when the social media didnt exist...actually I was watching tv movies, or drawing or going to stores looking what junk they are selling. As my colleague said she bought bunch of cheap equipments for kitchen and home stuff then she felt like why did I buy this I dont need it.
I am 16, always been very insecure. I quit instagram 4 months ago and most of my insecurities went away. I feel like instagram can make even the most confident person very insecure. Besides, if someone feels the need to post on sm all the time, then they are faking their confidence. True confidence is quiet
"Besides, if someone feels the need to post on sm all the time, then they are faking their confidence. True confidence is quiet" That's a very wise insight for a 16 year old.
Yup very true. People who feel the need to share their accomplishments and whatnot are insecure deep down. The people who give little fucks are the true winners.
@@friedchickenhotcheetos Yup but it is very hard to use it properly. The like button itself has harmed so many teens, something so simple yet unavoidable to anyone who used the app when it used to show the number of likes. Theoretically one could use it cautiously, but it’s a booby trap.
@Parker Family It can be argued that UA-cam is primarily a video streaming platform and to those who don't use the comments section, it can mitigate some of the downsides to Social Media. Although when comments are used, the argument for UA-cam being social media is very compelling.
@@riddhi1623 tbh if you comment on it and talk to people about the subject of the video then yes I would say UA-cam is a social media platform. But if you use it purely to just watch videos I would disagree that it is a social media platform, because watching just UA-cam videos without making a comment or liking/disliking the video is like watching normal television.
@@cianmcmahonlynch2127 but on UA-cam unlike TV u can sesrch stuff which is really social....any anyways u end up commenting and sharing....thats what social media is about u can t resist it
Even if u get closrr to someone far away. You cant call it real connection as someone next to you. Its an illusion and imagine you get so use to that person and they become your fav but suddenly started ghosting you or just leaving you on seen and you were just never important to them in first place. It would hurt so much more right. Believe me its just an illusion
Hi Everyone, Thanks so much for watching my talk and leaving your thoughts. It's really interesting to hear how everyone has encountered the dark side of social media in one way or another, and what you did to overcome it. I hope this talks make us all (and especially our young kids) think about this more.
Bailey Parnell I deleted all my social media around end of 2016 and ever since then I've had no Facebook no Instagram and no Twitter and I can tell you this it is a massive switch As far as talking to people or wondering what other people are doing you are definitely on Island .
Bailey Parnell Very good presentation; outside of UA-cam I have no other social media and it's made me a better person socially... I now notice so many who lack the ability to socialize normally..I see so many people on dates at restaurants and can't stay off of their phones longer than 8 minutes and up and down the roads; heads down as they walk the sidewalks not paying attention even driving.. currently I live in the high desert area of Cali but everywhere is the same . Sad
Since being off all social medias I have noticed a huge shift in my insecurities, being more present, less anxiety and I don't compare myself to others! I also just feel smarter and much wiser now ahha
i deleted my personal instagram account. I don't have a lot of friends because of my social anxiety. and it hurt to see everyone else having a social life, and friends and it feels so lonely. Let me just say ever since i deleted my personal instagram i feel 40 times happier, face to face relationships are the best.and my grades have improved. It helped me to not care so much about what people think. Instagram is not as important as mental health. take care of yourself first
LMAO IM SO GLAD SOMEONE ELSE MENTIONED THIS !! I have autism and don't know how to make friends so even though I'm wAy more functioning than I was a year ago (my social anxiety has improved a lOt and I can talk to people now) I feel empty because the people I follow on Instagram are always hanging out with friends and going to parties.
I'm scared to delete my social media. I'm afraid I'll miss out and end up lonely or bored. But strangely enough I probably feel lonelier because of social media.
@Nitro Janks I have that very strong fear of missing out. I'm so scared I'll lose all contact with some of my far-away friends and also miss up on social events. Maybe I'm finding excuses for myself but I feel like it severe my ties to all these possible opportunities ... It's basically anxiety that's preventing me
@Nitro Janks You're absolutely right!! I think I will start little by little . Maybe just switching off for 5 days and then going up to a full week and so on. Have you had this experience?
I think I truly can relate with you I keep scrolling Instagram but I also know its not very good and its really hard to also delete I because on Instagram I at least do have friends but in real life not many so I feel if I delete ill become more lonely and depressed :/
My peers often make me feel as if I'm the only one who is affected negatively by social media, like I have a problem or something. Its nice to know there are other people out there who feel the same way as me.
Hey Gaby! I want to assure you that everyone goes through SM depression and has the feelings you are talking about. I for one disabled all political stuff on FB, even though it got me to unlike everything I previously liked in terms of books, people, etc. I don't know your peers, but it might be due to one or more of a series of scenarios. 0. EQ: You just are a sensible soul and have more compassion for the world and the people living in it (you have a higher level of Emotional Intelligence) 1. Some people have such a strong humanity compass and self awareness that SM just doesn't affect them; 2. Truth: they are lying in order to not seem lesser (extremely common human behaviour); 3. Volume: they aren't paying as much attention to SM as you might be, in terms of screen time. 4. Stoics: Some people feed off negative energy trying to dissipate (I for one also am motivated by harsher conditions & adversity). 5. Some people feed off negative energy trying to replicate it. In my country sometimes I go back to schools and universities to teach different life lessons learned in my professional career. One thing I avidly militate for is SM reduction or removal and the introduction of law that mandates a MINIMUM 16 YEARS AGE LIMIT till a person is allowed on SM, or similar platforms. (the young are most affected)
Hi! I've been having a hard time thanks to social media, I wanted to let you know that you're not alone! Many, if not all of us, have been affected by social media. You don't have a problem, you're just human. I hope you are okay!
I agree you have to think about yourself for me it makes my anxiety worse so screw what others say 😂but no one’s really judged me for it I don’t know if cause I am older
You'll increase your confidence once your remove all these addictive apps and so forth and start working and focusing only on yourself (especially in the beginning). Work on creating new and better habits, implement a daily training routine, find a clean diet that works for you in the long run, focus on improving these things and as you see desired results, you'll regain confidence again.
So far it's been 1 whole year since deleting my Twitter, Instagram and Facebook! My self-esteem has gotten so much better and my outlook on life is much clearer.
@@lexie02jones25 Ignore the problem is not like fix the problem, you can try to take it and use it less and in a motivational way. I't only an advice, i don't want to tell you what to do
I am an Indian, In my childhood, my teacher taught me that, there is a simple definition of poison, anything excessive is called poison whether it may be food, internet, love or anything. And to fix the limit for your self you need intelligence and perception.
Like I spend 11hrs + on socials. If I spent 11 hrs a day learning a language for example instead of going on my phone I could’ve been fluent in speaking another language! Social media has instant highs on your mental health but in the long run it’s rlly bad.
You're exactly right. Even one of these stressors is cause for concern, and when you combine them all together, you have a recipe for disaster if you're not careful. Thank you for watching!
I hate UA-cam comment sections because of some jerks I really need to quit reading and commenting them because it’s hurting me but I guess my real life is too boring that it’s making me addicted lol
I deleted mine for almost 1 week now, i must say it's boring without it but i realized that there are so many things to do than wasting my time on social media. I realized that having tons of like or followers don't matter in your life, we are obsessed with empty compliments that is boosting our ego for a while. I literally cried while watching this video! what a wonderful message
I used social media. I realised I'm just wasting my time. Then i tried to leave social media. It was a hard decision. But i beat it. Now i just use WhatsApp for communication and UA-cam for knowledge. 1- Ted talk 2- jay shety 3- Prince ea 4- Bright side 5- Be inspired These are my favorite channels. There are some other channels are also, but they are not in my mind now. Movies and TV shows are my business in leisure. UA-cam changed my life. I learned more from it than school.
I don’t have Instagram and sometimes I’m proud of it. However sometimes it can make you feel isolated, especially when all of your friends are on social media. But at the same time , not having social media let’s you see the impact it has on others.
I see exactly what you mean I'm really proud to not have it but yea I was sometimes wondering that when you dont have it it's like so weird for others to understand but anyways I'm happy and all these videos confirm well my good decision !
Ever since I left social media, I get up at 7 am instead of 4 and I still have time to work out, eat breakfast at home and read the bible. No more 4 am mornings :)
social media is making us unsocial, that's the truth. i remember the sign at the cafe “We do not have WiFi…talk to each other, pretend it’s 1995.” that was hilarious... i don't know you, but i miss those days, back in 90's.
Yeah now everyone just has their heads down in a phone. Its annoying. Has made it harder to date and have healthy relationships. Id hate to be in grade school now because of how prevalent it is among the youth. I am 37 by the way.
I quit all social media in April 2020. I’ve never felt better. My time spent with friends and loved ones is special. I am a lot more efficient at work. I don’t reach for my phone nearly as much. I listen more when people talk to me. When I travel I live in the moment, I savor each experience without worrying about the perfect post. I read more books and relax more on the weekend. I no lover have FOMO. I have JOMO (joy of missing out).
This is undeniably true. I’ve never felt healthier than when I came off social media. I can relate to this so much and can literally feel my mental health dip when I go on social media, Unbelievable.
I thought i was weird and unsocial for doing this, but this comment section made me sooooo happy. I guess ill accept myself and not doubt my decision. And yes i deleted social media and i am mentally very happy 💯
@@jaswanth2078 its 2020 and this still is a topic of discussion? Ill leave you alone with your thoughts 🙂 anyways what was your point because I said something totally different🤔
Social media simply destroyed you...! Fear of missing out..Misinterpretation and especially comparing people with all the fake post.! Giving up social media is the best thing that happened to me. I'm happier than ever!
I struggled quitting social media multiple times. I would always go back after 3/4 days or a week at max. I felt emptiness without social media because there was nothing else to do after work and studies. Especially since there was covid and everything was closed. Not this time though. It's been over a month and I only use messenger and whatsapp to communicate with my friends and families. This time I stopped using social media gradually. I quit one app at a time and that was reducing my overall usage time without even me realising. I slowly found other ways to be productive such as reading books and I joined gym too. I enjoy them. I wish I had this sooner but at the same time it's better late than never. I wish all of you trying to quit become successful and see the life through different lenses.
According to all the comments, i got the feeling that “i quit social media 4 months ago and feel fine” is the new generation’s version of “i’m clean”. It’s alarming.
Omg literally my thought as well! I have a feeling that in the near future there will be a lot more research about the dark side of social media and that it will actually be frowned upon as cigarettes are today while in the 90’s it was cool to smoke and a lot of people were doing it
It’s difficult to let go of social media as a business owner. There’s another great TED talk on why you don’t need social media to have a successful business and it is so relieving to watch.
I thought I was the only one so depressed to see everyone having their life altogether on social media. The perfect spouse, the perfect relationship, the perfect job, everything they want or need, and me feeling miserable for what I don't have, and them boasting about what they have. I felt so bad for comparing, now I understand I trained myself to do so through social media. May God help me
Gave up all social media one week ago except for UA-cam. I am healing, less anxiety, less depression, less having to prove myself to anybody. Living and working on myself.
This definitely hits hard. I started using social media at a very young age , and sometimes the pressure of it makes me feel out of reality, I hide my insecurities there but I now know that that’s not my life not my real life.
@@essay4285 Social media is one of the main causes of the mass rapid increase of health disorders in general, physical as well as mental. All the depression, anxiety and stress are the cause of so many of the diseases and illnesses that have developed or/and increased in the 21st century. This goes further, people hurting themselves don't even know that they're hurting themselves. How many people know that watching the television, phone and tablet before going to bed harms physical and mental health? How many people know that aerobic exercise before sleep causes health issues? How many people know that looking at magazine covers harms mental health? The list goes on and on. This period of been bombarded with information and misuse of advanced technology has caused more health issues, since technology advanced in the 21st century that's why we've had this rapid upshoot of both physical and mental health issues in the 21st century.
Pamela I made the mistake of following my co workers on Instagram. It made me feel A LOT WORSE about myself. That’s why I deleted Instagram. After that, I actually feel better about myself.
We all think that social media is the platform where everyone just interact with each other and post pictures but in reality social media is too much toxic and nowadays it's highly toxic! I just got addicted to it that i used to spent my half day scrolling and being more and more insecure about myself so i decided to deactivate it temporarily and after that i felt so better infact i learned lot of things and used my time productively and my life got happier. Deactivating social media was one of the best decision!
this video hit me on a deeper level, today starts my first day of my social media detox. i went to the gym today, and i left my phone in the car. I was able to fully focus on my workout, but i couldn't help but notice all the other cell phone zombies wondering around the gym, its almost as if people are afraid to be alone with their own thoughts, they need a distraction.
It’s been 6 months no social media! And I realized how much time and anxiety I had build up because of it. It’s crazy how much I don’t miss it. Loved this video, thank you.

I used to be a social media addict for as long as I can remember. But ever since I deactivated Facebook and Instagram, my life has gotten so much better. The anxiety, depression and frequent worries have gone done drastically. I now feel this sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, even with the little things. It's like, I got my life back.
Park Chim Chim It is. I use UA-cam mainly to learn something. Unlike, Instagram or Facebook, UA-cam’s elements of distractions are not obvious. One can sharpen their skills using UA-cam, let it be writing or programming. In my opinion, UA-cam is much more productive for a determined individual than Facebook or Instagram.
When I was deactivating my Facebook, I selected that I was using it too much, and next thing that they use is try limiting Facebook emails. Like... who checks emails and see's an email about Facebook to get on now a days? That's a pretty lame tactic.
You explained it very well Mam. I used to feel down seeing other people partying or visiting beautiful places. I used to curse my life but I been away from social media for last couple of months and I am happy now.
Same here lol. I fell into depression seeing people my age living good lives, while I felt left behind smh. Meanwhile, the stats don't lie. The majority of people my age are broke or in debt. It's all a facade!

I personally believe quitting social media nowadays becomes daunting task for everyone. Be honest several times i deactivate my personal account but end up coming back to that . However, meanwhile i feel so peaceful or even concentrate on my other tasks too .
The worst part of it all is when you do delete Instagram and or other platforms people will question/bully you for it. Or find it weird and think “oh he/she must not do anything worth posting lol”....
I don't blame you for deleting your Instagram all you simply did what was best for you. Screw them let them continue to the mentally enslaved and addicted to Instagram while they suffer from their own mental, emotional, spiritual health and if they're not careful it can even impact their physical health too. Congrats to you and keep up the good work
Hi everyone, I deleted my Facebook and Insta and everythings... over 6 years ago, never looked back! When I run into people, they say I fell off the map. THANK YOU! Smart people keep their private lives PRIVATE!
I gave up Facebook, twitter,Instagram 6 months ago.Despite vociferous protests by my family,I also uninstalled WhatsApp.And guess what? I haven't missed a thing till now. People who love me still remember my birthday despite FB not reminding them. People who want to reach out call me instead of Whatsapping me. I do get those occasional pangs where I want to be on fb real bad. Instead, I meditate or go for a run or read a book or virtually do anything I wish to instead of snuggling up in bed typing away to glory on my phone. Give it up guys, give it up. I say that as an addict myself. You'll realize what you were into only when you give it up.
You're soo right I'm addicted to instagram I'm even tired of it.The nonsense is too much people even post pictures of their tea or Cofee in their stories it's really annoying social media is a real waste of time!!!Insta and Fb have become more addictive with their stories.
hitesh mahato Have you swapped the above social media channels for an addiction to info and videos?? UA-cam addiction is real and everyone who gets addicted dumps fb and Twitter! How many hours a day u watching vids??
I used to compare my life with other people's life on social media. Not out of jealousy but i used to think I also deserve everything they are having not realising that it's their destiny and lifestyle that they are blessed with. But few things happened recently that made me delete my social medial account thanks to the person behind it and really took a huge courage for me to do that. But ever since I did that i started focusing on other things in life like meditation spirituality. I started accepting my own situation . My desires and dreams literally went to zero and i started connecting with people who are less privileged than me.
@@timowerner6518 well this my advice in your day go read books do some sports watch some series or movies give time to your family plan your future hope it's works
I just deleted my account. I can admit it does cause depression. As soon as I deleted it, I felt a load off my shoulders. I'm now living in my moment of happiness.
once I forgot my phone home while going university and I felt shockingly amazing that day... I felt like as if i was TRULY PRESENT in PRESENT day!!i felt more engaged in my daily work
You don't have to be your worst just because you're given the opportunity. We all have control of our actions. There is no rule that we have to post about ourselves on social media...
Whether we want it or not social media impacts our way of thinking and decisions. It is really important to have a detox from social media from time to time. I really liked this part of your speech: “In social media, we are the product, and we are letting others attribute value to us”.
I also used to think renouncing social media was not an option since it played such a big role in my life. On my 30th birthday, I decided to leave it. That was four months ago. Many times, I forget that Facebook or Twitter even exist. That is how quickly you can move on from the clutches of social media. I still travel, have fun, go to parties etc.. all in the abscence of social media. Funny enough I also still have friends!
It's interesting to see everyone's personal stories. You seem to have a good community. On the other side, I've heard people who feel really lonely and disconnected when they left social. That's sad. :(
Beautiful talk! I loved the part where she said you don't have to follow your friends. That is true, some of my friends are too different on social media compared to real life.
porque la gente ahora se esconde detras de un algoritmo y ahora te puede hablar y decir todo lo que le de la gana sin que tu le cuestiones sociedad acobardada te dicen por redes cosas que a la cara no tienen el valor de decirtelo
Oh, I've noticed that a LOT with many of my "friends" or former schoolmates. I start questioning whether their online persona is their actual true selves, or if they are just putting up a mask for the others to see. But then I start questioning myself why I care so much, and why I still keep on following all these people even if I've barely had a straight conversation with them before. Social media really distorts our perception of others and ourselves. I'm trying to be less caught up in the online world, and only go on it for practical purposes.
i´ve been on and off social media for 3 years, it has given me anxiety, depression and stress and when I finally think I've learnt how to cop with it a major crisis appears. Like she said, I don't think quitting social media is the answer, because we are part of a generation that communicates through it, creates relationships and meets new opportunities. I have met a lot of amazing people thanks to social media, I´ve also been given the opportunity to work in amazing projects, I've found inspiration from a lot of people I wouldn't have known if it weren't for the internet. I'm really grateful for this speech, I find it quite illuminating when it comes to social safety awareness.
I deleted Instagram and Facebook off my phone. I kept Messenger to keep in touch with my friends around the world. I feel free! I’m being way more productive than before. Social media is fantasy, people show only appearances, not reality. Focus on stay in touch with people you really love and feel their presence. Do things you really enjoy like going to the beach, relax your mind. I recommend it. ❤️✨💫😊
Agreed, there are so many people addicted to social media. I wonder how people will look back in the future.. "Oh 5 years ago I remember spending my free time looking at posts of other people living their lives."
I love youtube. I am so happy that there is a thing like UA-cam where you can learn a lot of things, but still be disconnected from facebook, snapchat, instagram, whatsapp, twitter, viber... I have nothing, and it feels great!
This spoke volumes to me. I’ve experienced great moments on social media and moments that depressed and or attempted to ruin my life. Now I’m very happy that I️ no longer use a social media site outside of UA-cam. This was right on time!
as a 12 year old who is constantly looking at pretty girls on social media, checking my friends stories, and and worrying if I can’t like the things that I enjoy because “I won’t fit in” is exhausting. I want to get off of social media but I might be lonely, I won’t be able to talk to my friends, but I still feel lonely when I’m on it. Her point on this video is you don’t have to get off of social media, if your feeling bothered on it, it might be because you are on the dark side. Try downloading other apps, scroll on posts that you don’t like to change your algorithm, unfollow people, try something new like a show that someone recommended to you on social. Anything like that. But if you really are sure you want to disconnect from social media, go ahead! Do what you believe will make you comfortable. It might be hard because now a days social media is daily tool in this world.
Hi all. I'm not on social media every day. But when you've been away for a long time, it's always nice to know that the world hasn't changed much. And my friend is still posting her pies and another friend is still taking selfies at the gym. I realize we're all fine.
Oreo oh I've already deleted Snapchat and I plan on deleting Instagram today but I'll keep Twitter. Instagram has been my biggest distraction for the last three years.
I don't want you all to think you HAVE to delete these accounts to be happy. Sometimes, it's about redesigning the experience you have on there - for example by following TEDx vs. [insert whoever you don't like]. Thanks so much for watching!
As a psychotherapist I think we need to acknowledge that social media, while it has so many positives, works on our brain in a manipulative way which most of us are unaware of. I get sucked in sometimes and I know what's being done! Knowing something we intake works similar to addiction and doing something about it are not the same things, but at least it's a beginning.
The continual repetition daily takes its toll on people especially those who don't know and appreciate life without social media.I can see why they become addicted to it and the how the pathways or connections in the brain can be changed. I am glad I had my childhood in the 1970's.
I agree. Social media is deeply manipulative and designed to make us addicted. Everything is just so unpredictable there, from the explore page to the validation in the form of likes and stuff.
Here from the future: We still need to learn how to use social life to improve us vs. being ruled by it. I personally use Social Media now more to get professional advices quicker and actually improve my social interaction in real life! Yes, done right you can use to it to boost it instead of subsitute it with Social Media.
Couple of months free from snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and instagram. By far the best thing I’ve done! The anxiety of constantly being bombarded with other people’s thoughts and experiences was becoming unbearable and distracting.
Social media can be such a double-edged sword. It connects us, but it can also consume so much time and impact mental health. I’ve been using an app called carecheck, and it’s been a game-changer. It’s all about privacy, has no ads, and focuses on meaningful caring connections rather than endless scrolling. It’s a reminder of how we can use tech in a more balanced, intentional way. Feels like something we could all benefit from.
.... in social media, we are the product,, i spent about one week without social media even during quarantine and i feel really good, it's great, like you have a full freedom, you have everything under your control, i can't wait until i try that experience after the lockdown, a life without social media, i m really excited 😍😂
My biggest issue with social media is that it's making me lose all my faith in humanity. When I go on social media I quickly get the impression that humanity is starved for intelligence and rational and logical thought. I end up reading the crazy commentaries and the rebuttals when I could better spend my time on relevant work.
Same and i hate it i regret it... since 2019. I just want to quit social media because... i dont want but i tempted many times and i know im not the only one like this gen z was miserable
I decided to quit the social media and it's been 2 years now, first I controlled it and kept it only for close friends and family but actually it feels so much better to completely quit, ever since, I learnt a new language, I engage more with my real friends who remained in contact by phone and I watch things I like on UA-cam, I hope more people realize that sooner and sooner..
I agree with you in many points, but when you say that social media isn't good or bad and that is a "safe" way to use it is confuse. It's not just a tool if it is designed to make the users addicted, and social media companies designed this way because it's the way they make money. And when it turns into addiction, it seems complicated to tell people with addiction that they can use the "substance" in a safe way, we don't say to alcoholics that they shouldn't quit, that they drink socially. I think delete shouldn't appear as an obligation, but must appear as an option, and as an good option (specially for young people). In general, congratulations for your speech, it's a really important subject :)
watching this right now for a college course I'm in. A few years ago, I did a social media purge and deleted a lot of people that simply did not make me feel good about myself, in whatever way. I also unfollowed a few celebrities. it worked, and I have a better online experience now.
I'm not completely off social media; I haven't deleted any accounts. I just logged off everything and deleted apps off my phone. I have FB messenger because it's a separate app and it's just like texting, but I cant see people's timelines so I'm good. I feel much better mentally though and I'm very productive now.
I agreed up until 11 minutes.. Social media can be bad not the reaction of people on it. It is designed to persuade you based on our psychological weaknesses. Us being hooked to social media is beneficial to these companies. And that is a huge problem that needs our attention. I wish the talk would focus more on that.
I realized this last year, I hated social media because anytime I went on it I had anxiety, I felt left out. So I deleted both snapchat and instagram, but I realized I want to know whats happening in the world so I downloaded instagram but I created a private account with no followers allowed and I can follow and comment on whatever post I wanted without stress about how many followers or likes I have. And with snapchat, there are stories I want to see so I have two accounts, one with people I can talk to and another with no one added so I can take a break if I the stories I see are stressing me out, its complicated. But I recommend this if you cant delete social media it really helped me:)
I've definitely witnessed especially between 15 - 28 year olds, immense pressure that they endure. I think we have become exposed to an illusory world where we are witnessing perceived perfection from all angles. We see people looking like they having this 'perfect life' full of perfect pictures, and it creates this paradigm in peoples minds that they do not compare to that and that they are not "good enough". I have seen a massive increase in panic attacks, and anxiety on a whole especially in young people. i have deactivated my fb profile 2 months ago, and i still feel the need to log in to see what is happening. it's absolutely an unpleasant sensation, but i appreciate how much i am aware of it
It’s so hard. I realized it’s an actual addiction a couple years ago. Now I need to figure out how to stop redownloding the apps after deleting them every couple of days
YES it is! I deactivated my Facebook a month ago, and I feel like I’m actually living my life again. I was on it for 10 years. 10 YEARS!!! I realized how much time I was wasting, scrolling, posting every moment, that I should be enjoying IN the moment. Thank goodness I was raised pre-internet social media. I know how to live life “in the moment” and can be content. Kids now days will never know the meaning of “being content in the moment”. Social media is the demise of mankind!
I'm sorta in same boat with you. I got on FB 10 years ago this time. 2 months ago I finally decided to break. I have not fully deleted it, just limiting my usage time. I deleted the app off my phone and now only log in about once a week for less than 10 minutes and it feels goooooood!!! Samething with my IG account. Now if I could only do the same for UA-cam LOL!
Loved this talk, Bailey! Everybody who uses social media should see this. I experienced social media addiction myself, found out they're intentionally made to be endless, that's why you can spend hours just by scrolling through your feed. I stopped using Snaphat after they came out with that map update, I like twitter but currently I'm following some people who I felt like I was obligated to follow back but I don't actually want to keep seeing on my feed... Gotta clean up my feed to make the experience more enjoyable. Facebook, I barely use it. My biggest "enemy" is Instagram, I'll have to find a solution, I don't want to delete it, but the temptation is just too high. Maybe I'll just delete the app itself.
True. My mom took my phone for 1 week, my phone is with her on the other city. And on the first day, I was crying like I'm so incomplete. Up until I felt comfortable without using phone, I'm just reading books and cleaning our house.

Hello where are you from
I am 16, always been very insecure.
Lol I see what you mean but i think we can’t generalize that
Not all quiet confidence is true and not all „not quiet“ confidence is fake
Also i know that instgram can harm us mentally but not for all and it depends on how you use it and if you compare yourself with others or not
@@friedchickenhotcheetos Yup but it is very hard to use it properly. The like button itself has harmed so many teens, something so simple yet unavoidable to anyone who used the app when it used to show the number of likes. Theoretically one could use it cautiously, but it’s a booby trap.

Bailey Parnell I enjoyed your talk. Well done!
Great talk Bailey.Every point was bang on. I'm sharing this with all my friends.
Sad
you're right, this is the dark side of people not the social media.
Since being off all social medias I have noticed a huge shift in my insecurities, being more present, less anxiety and I don't compare myself to others! I also just feel smarter and much wiser now ahha
i feel a lifting of the social media fog. and more outside time for me.
i deleted my personal instagram account.

Social media broke my spirit. i am always comparing myself too other peoples highlights, my confidence is low...
Leave social media. You deserve to be happy and confident

Social media is one of the main causes of the mass rapid increase of health disorders in general, physical as well as mental.

Please can you teach me to make this habit?
Her voice is so soothing and beautiful.
Kitty Koehn was just thinking the same thing! I wish I had her voice
Right!?
@Zain844 example A for what she's talking about in the video. Her voice is soothing and made it easier to listen to.
She is beautiful too
i agree :3
I used to compare my life with other people's life on social media. Not out of jealousy but i used to think I also deserve everything they are having not realising that it's their destiny and lifestyle that they are blessed with. But few things happened recently that made me delete my social medial account thanks to the person behind it and really took a huge courage for me to do that. But ever since I did that i started focusing on other things in life like meditation spirituality. I started accepting my own situation . My desires and dreams literally went to zero and i started connecting with people who are less privileged than me.
deleted Instagram, Facebook and Twitter 8 months ago. Never looked back and never felt better.
How do you spend your day then i want to do the same
@@timowerner6518 well this my advice in your day go read books do some sports watch some series or movies give time to your family plan your future hope it's works
@Lubhavna Goel yes!! I won't use fb n insta. Most of these activities I do. And I'm active and productive more than before☺☺
I did that just today
Instagram destroyed me .... deleting it never felt better I'm just me I have a life again
I just deleted my account. I can admit it does cause depression. As soon as I deleted it, I felt a load off my shoulders. I'm now living in my moment of happiness.
once I forgot my phone home while going university and I felt shockingly amazing that day... I felt like as if i was TRULY PRESENT in PRESENT day!!i felt more engaged in my daily work
social media actually does make people act their worst.
You don't have to be your worst just because you're given the opportunity. We all have control of our actions. There is no rule that we have to post about ourselves on social media...
Our phones are 'Buffers.'
Linda Gray the topic is too complicated for you clearly
Social media feeds people's sense of entitlement and narcissism

Maybe both...
That's sad. :(
WOW. You inspired me!
Do you still take photos at parties and nights out? Or if you do, do you take less now or none some nights ?
Brabazon I can answer this. I deleted all social media. Erode my 25th birthday. I still take pics with friends, not so much the little things
Then those people need to find new friends @@BaileyParnell
Beautiful talk! I loved the part where she said you don't have to follow your friends. That is true, some of my friends are too different on social media compared to real life.
porque la gente ahora se esconde detras de un algoritmo y ahora te puede hablar y decir todo lo que le de la gana sin que tu le cuestiones sociedad acobardada te dicen por redes cosas que a la cara no tienen el valor de decirtelo
Truth!
I agree with you
Oh, I've noticed that a LOT with many of my "friends" or former schoolmates.
@@resistlessflow 👍, I feel you too,
i´ve been on and off social media for 3 years, it has given me anxiety, depression and stress and when I finally think I've learnt how to cop with it a major crisis appears.
I got rid of my social media in 2014. Best feeling ever!!! I've been traveling to different countries every 4 months and love it!!
Do you work? If so how are you able to travel every 4 months
I’m here because social media is affecting my mental health and I want to get out of it. I will. I want to be healthy and have peace already.
12 months without instagram, i got the best feeling in life. in 12 months i try to accept my self, not to judge who ever I'm.
Hi all. I'm not on social media every day. But when you've been away for a long time, it's always nice to know that the world hasn't changed much. And my friend is still posting her pies and another friend is still taking selfies at the gym. I realize we're all fine.
Omg good thing i permanently deleted my instagram, snapchat, twitter and now i feel better.
Bailey Parnell I've decided to delete Snapchat, take a 90 day break from Instagram, which is my biggest addiction, continue twitter and Facebook.
so u still have Facebook
How's the break going so far, Rodney?
❤❤❤❤
Here from the future: We still need to learn how to use social life to improve us vs. being ruled by it. I personally use Social Media now more to get professional advices quicker and actually improve my social interaction in real life! Yes, done right you can use to it to boost it instead of subsitute it with Social Media.
Couple of months free from snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and instagram. By far the best thing I’ve done! The anxiety of constantly being bombarded with other people’s thoughts and experiences was becoming unbearable and distracting.
I disagree
Are you feeling better now
This is certainly one the best TedTalk I've seen. Really helpful and inspiring, Thank you, Bailey Parnell for this wonderdul video.
It's not, if you think this is "one of the best"... I have bad news for your intellectual status. But then again you probably knew that.
Feels like something we could all benefit from.
.... in social media, we are the product,,
i spent about one week without social media even during quarantine and i feel really good, it's great, like you have a full freedom, you have everything under your control,
i can't wait until i try that experience after the lockdown, a life without social media, i m really excited 😍😂
My biggest issue with social media is that it's making me lose all my faith in humanity. When I go on social media I quickly get the impression that humanity is starved for intelligence and rational and logical thought. I end up reading the crazy commentaries and the rebuttals when I could better spend my time on relevant work.
That is what makes me want to leave too. So many people just use it to unleash their nastiness.....
Literally the same thing is happening to me now, I just want to get rid of it and focus on things that are actually good for me
I'ts the comments section that makes me want to run for the hills.
Same and i hate it i regret it...
since 2019. I just want to quit social media because... i dont want but i tempted many times and i know im not the only one like this gen z was miserable
It’s been 1yr almost..I haven’t even used a inch of social media...
Already positive engulfed me..
I wish there was a 'follow but not really follow' button for all the people and friends I have to follow out of politeness
Wimsem - Tekenen & Knutselen same!
For Twitter, just follow, then mute the person.
Block? lol
there is... you just remove their notifications from your timeline
Wimsem - Tekenen & Knutselen the problem is you don't need social media if your finance don't depend on it.
Quitting Facebook was the highlight of my last decade, it's a life changing experience.
Me:I need to reduce my online presence
2020: online classes, FaceTime, zoom calls, online tours...
i felt that so bad bro
Omg hahahhaha
Online tours??
kunal tamang yeah like hermitage museum was having lives on Instagram hahahah
Ikr. Soooo true.
6 months without social media and man I’m I happier with life in so many aspects I wish that I could explain!
I have a lot of realization after watching this video. Those words i've heard helps me to be mindful.
2 hours? I spend like 6 hours a day on my phone... I have a problem
Same 😥😓 and sometimes more
Felix Zwart says the guy who’s name’s Felix
I spend like 8
I thought the same thing more like 8 hrs😂🥺
10 hours for me 😓
I agree with you in many points, but when you say that social media isn't good or bad and that is a "safe" way to use it is confuse.
Anna Hartmann I totaly agree with your comment
I concur! Loved her talk up until that statement!
Social media is neutral. It can help an artist or entrepreneur like she said. But there are lot of negatives like she pointed out.
Very well said, even after 5 years👍
watching this right now for a college course I'm in.
Oh thank you! I forgot that i can log out, which actually helps me to not check fb and notifications!
Hopefully this discussion around mental health as a whole can be accessed more, something I have started trying to do on my channel and hopefully other mental health professionals will follow suit.
Peace out.

i have deactivated my fb profile 2 months ago, and i still feel the need to log in to see what is happening. it's absolutely an unpleasant sensation, but i appreciate how much i am aware of it
It’s so hard.
Ekler Kis I agree
True. My mom took my phone for 1 week, my phone is with her on the other city. And on the first day, I was crying like I'm so incomplete. Up until I felt comfortable without using phone, I'm just reading books and cleaning our house.
