Mad love bro. I’ve been researching doing a patio slab and was gonna do some experimenting myself but you’ve saved me quite a bit of time. I was thinking of wetting the bottom and middle since the majority of wet concrete experts always mention the thoroughness of absorption. The only thing we can’t overcome is that our aggregate isn’t well mixed and evenly distributed. I think you’ve made some great progress though on getting us much closer. Appreciate you sir
Appreciate the feedback 🤙 someone had mentioned, dry pouring then mixing in the form 🤙was actually thinking about the bonding, myself,, tested the Sand mix 5000psi they say its concrete without the aggregate,,I like the concept, I topped the dry pour,, doing some research to see if it coated the layer beneath it , helping coat and bond 🤙 plus I'm tempted to break open my first slab to see if everything bonded over time with the curing process 🤙
Compacting and compression might help with the bonding as well,,you inspired an idea,,might do some testing With dry pour compression And dry pour not compressed 🤙
@@DiyTheGrappler I’ll be following along. I may start recording my journey just in case I find something useful. I think in the long run these videos help everyone whether the experience is positive or negative. I bought a plate compactor to go over my concrete before wetting. I’m also in Michigan so I have to account for our weather with some remesh which is the wire concrete reinforcing panels. I those are good for driveways too.
IMO- Compacting - yes! 👍 Wetting middle - no :( Spalling problem seems to happen at first mist from under watering (too light). Need to hit it with a decent amount of water (1 or 2 passes w mister is not enough - will bubble). It needs to be completely misted a little deeper - like 5 or 6 passes of misting. Topping w mortar mix👍 Finish w steel trowel 👍 If it’s a thick slab, water for days (3) - you can’t overwater but it will get the whole thickness.
Hey man I like what you're doing it's really cool you know I'm 65 years old like I told you I got a black belt and red dragon been doing it since I was 18 but anyway I remember my first Sensei he told me he said it doesn't matter what you doing life especially with martial arts you need to watch listen and learn and that's what you're doing pretty cool man right on keep on getting them videos I like them
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️SO SMART compacting the concrete mix!!! I saw a couple on UA-cam who has issues with bubbles coming up after misting and showering their dry pour. Have you encountered any issues with bubbles?
They sell "resurfacer" for DIYers and "self leveling resurfacer" for pros... if you experimenting could you do like a 6 inch to 12 inch footing type test? The way you would do it is just put the dry mix in there and level it off with a screed, then wet it a few times so that it sets then after it sets you can wet cure it for 28 days underwater or with a ton of water... wet curing after it sets will make it stronger... but you can't wet cure before it sets. I want to see how thick dry pour can work. Thanks.
Great stuff here...a thought occurred to me what about watering midway, meaning at the halfway point to add moisture in the middle...add the top layer and continue. Maybe you would have a really good layer of deep moisture already partially there??
I appreciate your videos. I'm a single mom and have decided to tackle doing my own backyard landscaping with the help of my kids. I am dry pouring my pavers as well having watched several youtube videos. I thought it would be easy, but there's so much to learn. After having done it (I'm 3 pavers in), I realize it's trail and error. I've made a few mistakes, but I'm learning. I like the way your pavers came out, smooth and clean. My son has been a big help to me on this project. btw: he also has been training at an MMA gym. He's been doing jiu jitsu since 2nd grade. HS wrestler. I'm wondering if he thinks about concrete while grappling as well. lol. All the best. Thank you so much for your advice.
i believe sand mix is 4:1 sand cement. you could mix you’re own and make it 3:1 or 2:1 which is very strong. a 5 gallon bucket of sand and a half bucket of cement is 2:1
Thanks for posting my man.. You got my respect by using the mask. You are the only one I've seen wearing a mask. All these other folks are inhaling all that crap.
Excellent video! I prefer the sand mix. It's smoother, less entrapped air. The mortar mix (depending on type) will block water once it's set. That prevents moisture getting to the concrete for max cure strength. You can take it easy spraying mist/shower with the sand mix. I use plastic film drop sheet after surface is set and for the next day, after that old bed sheets, etc. Yeah it's a pain watering the first two days.
Nice 👍🤙🤙🤙I'm actually starting to lean towards the Sand mix after this test 🤙 it's made,, multiple purpose uses as well as capping existing concrete slabs 🤙 perfect for topping Dry pour 🤙
Great vid! So another thing I found that I think may be new for a colored top. For your first mists onto soft pour after paint roller instead of using hose use a misting spray bottle. Add water based coloring, has to be water based, to your spray bottle. Thus your top layer of will absorb the color uniformly.
My 1st dry pour slab I did 2 weeks ago, I compacted it with my feet. Lol. It's all the same. You wouldn't believe how much my feet sank in. These normal dry pour and screat videos are leaving LOTS of air pockets behind. I think compacting is the best way to get strength from this method.
If they are of two different PSI then that might be why the top is flaking off, if you get the same PSI sandmix as the base you are using it might prevent the flaking... "A technique known as “wet-curing,” for example, involves laying special curing blankets across a concrete slab, dousing the blanketed surface with water, and keeping it constantly wet for 28 days." - Prosoco
To increase the strength of my dry pour slabs, I first dump a 60-pound bag of Quikcrete Concrete into a mason's mixing tub, and then add two cups of portland cement to the concrete. I mix the material thoroughly before pouring it into the form. I repeat this procedure for each bag. As I add more material to the form, I spread it using a wooden float. Next, like you, I add a top layer of Radid Set Mortar Mix, which I spread with a wooden float. I then screed the materia, and l follow it by troweling the surface very gently with a fine sponge float. For the last step, I gently roll the surface with a 3/8-inch nap roller.
I think if you dry mix the sand mix with the standard mix you are using then it won't flake but if you just put it on top it won't be of uniform mix so the material can't bond, so if you use like a hand rake and mix the sandmix on top before you mist it, it might not flake off... sand mix is supposed to be stronger since it's supposedly more dense... but you have to get it mixed in with the based mix you are using... just some ideas.
🤙A high level concrete guy advised using as a topper,,on top of the dry pour just as the mortar mix with the same proct,,I do understand what you are saying about Bonding 🤙but due to applying it both dry then hydrating the concrete and sand mix should bond great on its own ,,if the concrete was already hard and the sand mix was dry then there might be an issue bonding🤙,, but we will see soon as I take off the forms appreciate the insight 🤙

Good instructional video. I watched other dry pour concrete projects and I can't remember anyone mentioning that you should compact and vibrate the dry pour before wetting.
