On some real shit though, this is actually the saddest DG song I've ever heard. It's hard for me to really connect with Stefan when he's all about primal emotion and anger and violence, and although he does talk about sadness quite often, he puts it in a light where it's only due to drugs or he ends up saying "but fuck it, I don't care" somewhere in the song. "It's been a pleasure, Stefan" hit me so fucking hard. My point is, I've never seen Stefan as a human until now, I've only seen him as MC Ride. This is a man with a life, a family. He presents himself like he doesn't give a shit, but the same primal instincts he goes off of for anger and power give him fear and sadness. I like it.
This shit is sad as fuck, that bit "chant kill cause i can this body by my own hands my friends and family won't understand so i stay in the end don't make none to me" is too fucking real
As much of a Death Grips fan that I think I am, "My point is, I've never seen Stefan as a human until now, I've only seen him as MC Ride. " I have to fully agree with this. This song is Stefan personifying himself again. MC RIDE IS DEAD.
"Phone ring too long" hits way too hard to me. I have a girlfriend who's really depressed and somewhat suicidal and there's been times where she's in an extremely dark place and she won't answer when I call her, whihc usually makes me think she killed herself or something. This is definitely my favorite Death Grips song.

As much as this song is dreadful and filled with sadness it is as hopeful as any song I have ever heard. Singing it like he’s being honest about himself and allowing to be ok with those feelings can be therapeutic in nature. This is a person that’s ready not to die but to learn how to let go of the idea of dying right now.
@@0412lennon It's so cathartic. The entire song is like the feeling of just getting all of it out of your head, just being straight up and honest with yourself finally after bottling things in so long. Only then can you move on.
The sound to me is just sticking it to everyone that ever doubted you, sticking it to yourself, to your depression. You could give up and die and be free, but you won't. You staying alive is defying the depression, forcing yourself to overcome it. It's basically a bitter triumphant way of staying alive out of spite, just to prove something
This sort of "depressing yet triumphant" sound should be a subgenre on its own. It's a very specific but very intense and real feeling and I find it a bit difficult to name other examples.
I doubt anybody will read but, i am a beginner drummer who has been kind of teaching myself by playing along with songs, and ive played this one a lot, but one time about halfway throughout, and stopped playing, left my throne and just broke out into uncontrollable tears. This year has been very difficult, and death grips has helped me really vent my feelings. Its been a pleasure, stefan
This is such a contrast to some of their first few songs, like "Beware" in which Stefan seems to be much more accepting of his crimes and desires. I feel like, personally, every album is an evolution not only in DGrips music, but their personalities. That is why I love the group so much and wish them the best of luck when it comes to both their lives and their art.
That is an ALTEC A7 Voice of the Theater speaker. One of the most well respected loudspeakers ever made. Designed for cinemas back in the 60's. Because of the dynamic range necessary for sound reproduction in film (think explosions or machinery or sirens for example) they were designed to handle an extremely wide range of frequencies from close to sub-sonic bass to practically inaudible highs without distorting or losing authenticity at any level. Accordingly they can handle contemporary music like dub step or techno despite the fact that when they were designed no one could have imagined that bass would become so pronounced in the music of the future. They produce one decibel per watt and can be deafening even when driven by a low wattage tube amp. Like David Klipsch, James B Lansing believed in efficient speakers. Hence the strategy of using horns in front of the constituent drivers. The woofer at the bottom is situated in a bass horn. The hf driver is also similarly situated in large tuned horn. The tweeter in this speaker weighs more than the typical subwoofer these days. As a sound wave travels through a funnel from narrow to wide, it's height increases in proportion to the increasing width of the channel it is confined withing. The height of the wave or amplitude denotes the level or volume of the sound in question. By using horns it is possible to exponentially increase the volume produced by a speaker without using electronic amplification. Making the speaker more efficient and requiring less output from a power amplifier and thereby keeping unintended ambient electronic noise innate to circuits to a minimum. They have an excellent signal to noise ration in audio parlay. Eric Clapton and Jim Hendrix both dedicated entire chapters of their autobiographies to extolling the virtues of these speakers. Getting a pair in the 70's was like a rite of passage for successful rock stars. They cost as much as a house back then. A castle and a pair of VOT speakers. This combination was the gold standard for rock royalty. Of course film makers had similar appreciation for them too. Roman Polanski had a pair at his place in LA. The listening party that his girlfriend Sharon Tate hosted and that was subsequently invaded by Manson's acolytes was held in this house. Sharon and the folks invited were listening to the Beatles White album this pair of VOT speakers. On of only a handful of privately owned VOT systems in the country at the time. In the wake of the bloodbath that occurred that night Manson's minions sat down and listened to the entire album before leaving. The sound system was far beyond anything that they had ever experienced before and in combination with the Beatles it blew their minds (further). They paid fealty to the fidelity by quoting lyrics from the album in the form of graffiti written in blood. HELTER SKELTER was one phrase that they picked up on and then daubed on the wall with fingers dipped in viscera. This tribute was not used by ALTEC LANSING to promote their speaker line for some reason. ECHO ECHO ECHO ECHO slash slash slash. '
This song stopped me from killing myself many many times when I was 16-17, I listened to it after writing a note three different times and decided to continue on. Nobody in my life was safe to speak to about it so this band became my outlet. I still cry every time I listen to this song because I know for a fact I would be dead without it. If his lyrics are any indication I know Stefan is predisposed to self loathing like myself but I would hope he could know that I did not die because of him and his art. I’m 21 now
Beware of some DG fans throwing you ideas of reconsideration. There’s always wolves at the door. You’re doing the hard work day by day. That’s an accomplishment on to itself and maybe that’s enough to keep you going.
“I’ve tried nothing, everything works” Five words that completely sum up a couple years of my life. Being depressed and knowing what I had to do to better myself with the advice people gave me, I just didn’t want to… I didn’t believe it would work. I wish I listened to everybody sooner. This song will forever have a special place in my heart, hits me like a train.
"The music has emotional suffering on the darker and deeper side of what the human experience is like, but it's also a beast-- you could take a bite out of a bowl while listening to it. That's the kind of energy we want to project." -Zach Hill
Every statement that Zach has ever made about Death Grips has only added to the allure. They knew EXACTLY what they wanted to do right from the beginning and they just got better at it. These guys are the absolute peak of punk to me, and they speak to fears that'll carry over the centuries.
Honestly man, in shitty Chicago area about to watch the last 3 episodes of Cowbow Bebop on blur-ay, also very drunk and using a mac next to my drum machine, my god that whole sentence sounded pretentious...sorry I think these lyrics are just hitting me a little harder than any music has in awhile.
@@822I79I it's not even the point of the song ride just doesn't do it for family and friends he sees the deed as something to do on whim like drinking water and he never gets other perspectives
It hits your soul so hard, you understand the anger in this song, you get what it means when the drumstick hit the drums, when the guitar chord rings..
I don’t think anybody has noticed the organ that comes in at 1:31 followed by a much more mellow version of the melody is supposed to signify some sort of comfort. The comfort of death basically, since organs are usually stereotyped around funerals or death in general it would only be fitting. MC even starts rapping about buying a rope, as if there’s comfort of death. The song gets much more intense once he realises he can’t reach that comfort because of all of the consequences it would cause. Then the song goes back to that organ melody, signifying this is an endless loop of wanting death and realising you can’t have it.
I just love how there will always be a certain amount of people who have a constant immutable desire to die lmfao life is a fucking joke man... as i get older I relate to it more than i ever thought i could, but hey, at least im looking forward to that sweet release
I too can relate to Stefan’s nihilism and confusion in the position of life and death. The choice of being able to die when ever you want and leave a world full of false meaning and pain is ironically a complexed decision that will send back to self reflection and understanding the internal conflict within you.
This is one of the greatest artistic statements of all time. Death Grips as a band has always made the conscious effort to stay at an arms length from their fanbase, not just as a personal choice, but as a core fundamental of their identity. It's tough to call their music impersonal, but there has always been an obvious wall between listener and artist. I would assume their writing has personal meaning to them, but to work backwards from the end product to try and figure out what these people are actually like is impossible. So for them to release a song that bridges that lyrical divide in such an obvious way, after years of shying away from doing so, while also simultaneously embracing more conventional song structure, it's nothing short of a courageous move; they have dropped the wall completely and are letting you see right through to the other end. As a listener, this is not only gratifying, but it adds to their legend. It show's they are capable of being this authentic, but will never do it on your time. They had something they wanted to share, and that's all you're getting. The importance of this song is verifiable by the reaction it has and continues to receive. This kind of outcome from you being personal cannot be achieved unless you've built up an association between you and the opposite, and I don't think anyone in any medium has subverted that expectation better than Death Grips.
What I love about Stefan is how real this man is. He doesn't give a fuck about fame, and he hates talking about himself and exposing himself in the media. But when it comes to his craft he's 100% open about himself.
This song really exposes the terrible feeling that is having someone care for you but in the wrong way. It's not their fault, but they're wrong in the way they care for you. They don't give you what you need, they don't treat you the way you need to be treated. But still... they care for you, and that alone makes it borderline impossible to end it all. You're not going to end it all, not because of their help, but simply because of them being there. It's a conflicting feeling, and I know it all too well.
no its about life being gay and not killing yourself because you are man enough to not put you friends and family through dealing with you taking your own life.
thats also how I found out about death grips in the first place, she broke it off w me in the first place and then we got back together and I broke it off. Being sad af I started browsing youtube and found death grips randomly and bam here I am long time fan. guess there was something good that came from the relationship
Just the incredibly angry, exhausted and distorted delivery of the last line - “I’m fucking tired” - really hits home in the context of the whole song. There’re so many feelings drowning out one-another that become so incomprehensible that they can’t be described any further than a crude blanket statement.
This is DG's magnum opus, there will be never the same song as this one. (also Exmilitary popularity is easily because of how accessible this album is, so it's no wonder why song from there are popular)
"won't let you know when i get goin phone ring too long i'm probably gone" Lyrics are a snapshot of my life, Nov 2010. "all the nights i don't die for you wouldn't believe how many nights i ain't died for you on " Lyrics are a snapshot of the rest of my life.
There’s this video on UA-cam called something like “Therapist Explains ‘On G.P.’ by Death Grips” He’s the last person you’d expect to “get” Death Grips or give it a chance just by looking at him, but he clearly did all of his research and had a ton of appreciation for this song, its message, and its writing. While you’ve got time during quarantine, I’d definitely recommend giving the guy’s video a watch, if you love Death Grips it’ll really hit a chord with you, and honestly while I was watching this middle aged Jewish therapist go over everything that works so well in this song and with Death Grips in general, it really put a smile on my face
thanks from me too. I haven't watched it, i'm just now starting a relisten while reading the lyrics and will watch this right after. I've vaguely known the gravity this particular track is supposed to have and have been saving it up for a quiet minute where I'm in the right frame of mind i.e. now. And it's funny, because, as unlikely as something like this seems, it also seems so fitting to this insane hyperreality outlook I get from listening to Death Grips, like OF COURSE there is some middle aged psychologist who totally gets this! It's just part of the incredible sort of logic defying things this group seems to bring with it, and as if I didn't have a weak spot already for wholesome unlikely things like some tidy, professional man just getting everything right about something as abrasive and chaotic like this, it's so much more incredibly precious when it's in regard to something as crucial as this particular song. Seriously, thanks, I'll dive into it now and then report back, I think I have something appropriate for you as well!
i love the version where they just sat around and shit because we all listen to this song when we're really fucked up drunk and depressed and just lounging around in either of those 3 positions

I feel that. It feels almost triumphant in how much you've managed to come through. When I was suicidal, and listened to this song on loop, it made me feel like I was considering my whole life as some story, that this song was the credits to the movie of my life. That it was the triumphant end, on last hurrah before riding off into the void. Pretty fucked.
That's very unfortunate for the 2 of you ^^^ but it's still an extremely selfish act considering those who do still *care* about you.. All you can do is prove them wrong and fight.
@@seriousbismuth2173 it's not selfish. guilt-tripping others not to kill themselves is such an evil thing to do. they are suffering, yet they have to keep on suffering just so people in their lives don't have to deal with the inconvenience that some do not see a reason to keep on pushing and living through hell.

"Stefan felt alone in a world full of people who do not care about him. Those who did care were not prepared for Stefan in any way. This desperation drove Stefan so far into madness that he met an untimely death. 'what are you waiting for' Stefan overcomes his own death and thereby aquires deaths weapon, an ultimate confidence and certainty of being the master over his own death. 'Death in your way, not in my way'. All the nights I did not die for you. I still do not know what GP means however. So far goes my interpretation of the text. I see myself in this interpretation of this text. Thank you DG. You remind me of myself in times where I am at a low. Much love to you guys.
on general principle. the way I interpret it is "All the nights I don't die for you, on GP" means if Stefan didn't have his friends and family he'd commit suicide, almost as if it were general principle. he wouldn't hesitate, it would just be the default thing to do
I’ve lost my grandmother, my girlfriend and all my friends within a year. I get fleeting thoughts of self harm and ending it but no matter what I always come back to this song to realize that I’m not alone. Thank you DG and to everyone who believes in me. Edit: I just found out today my dad passed but I’m just going to keep on with my life. There’s only so much I can do.
I listened to this when I was on the verge; this song came out a year or two before that, and I still come back around to this song, out of sentiment. It's still just a good song about just.... being extremely hopelessly beaten down by life. I do believe in you, but also: stay around. Eventually it's always worth it. Wishing you the best.
Not to be weird but this song saved my life like 4 years ago when Stefan was talking about how lonely he was and how people nosily notice him in his state of paranoia but never really appear to "see" him as a person and how his most recent purchase was a "old black rope" which he later states a that he is going to learn how to tie in his remorsed "chamber" and anyone can forebodingly come and try it out and "hang whenever they want to." Idk but that shit like made me feel how foolish and loathing I was and how moping around will not really get you anywhere in life. Then he states that his prior fears must "get out his way" idk if im just over interperting the song but this really helped me through alot!
I remember the night this was uploaded. I was so excited that Death Grips had new music, but this song hit me like a fucking semi truck. I was not ready for such an emotional roller coaster and just such an amazing track, but in a way I did not expect.
4:34 this part hits closer to home when you're thinking about the ppl that would be devastated to hear that you decided to take your own life. Going through with it sounds appealing but then you're forced to keep living as to not traumatize the ones that care about you.(from personal experience)

I dont want it to seem like I'm using your brother's passing to push an agenda, but the shit facing young men these days is unbelievably tough. The world seems fundamentally averse to our existence.
This may be overanalyzing just a lil bit but I feel like this song (and somewhat all of Jenny Death) really changed the attitude of the band. Death Grips always had a serious edge to their catchy and chaotic af music, but this song is emotionally vulnerable and puts at jeopardy everything that Death Grips was known for. It makes sense to me that after this Bottomless Pit and YOTS are both sort of meta albums where the band reinvents themself in a not as serious way. This song feels like a culmination of Zach, Andy and Stefan's frustration with the music industry and the perception Death Grips had built up. I'd understand too why the band was originally going to break up after Jenny Death because it felt like they jumped the shark with this and that project as a whole.

Well said man
Yeah i agree I think
Be careful not to mix up Stefan and MC Ride

Totally notice Death Grips' influence on Bowie's Blackstar.
This kind of outcome from you being personal cannot be achieved unless you've built up an association between you and the opposite, and I don't think anyone in any medium has subverted that expectation better than Death Grips.
this is so good thank you
great write up
What I love about Stefan is how real this man is.

Thanks for writing this, you convinced me to watch it and it ended up making my entire day. :)
thanks from me too. I love how they put so much energy in the song and the video is the complete opposite of this
It's the point. It's great.
"I put all this work into my life, but why? What does it matter?"
stefan made it out with this song and so can all of us. do not give up! love y’all on gp.
this song has never resonated with me this much before, i am grateful that this song exists and that i'm not the only one who feels like this
There are times when I need this song. To remember why I still go on.
i remember listening to this as my last song as i was about to pull the trigger and now i listen to it and i feel happy thank you dg even if theyll never read this is appreciate them so much man
Thank you for keeping me company through these rougher years grips. Never connected to a song more
Rest In Peace Desmond.
Thank you so much for everything you did for us over the years. It's been a pleasure.

Miss Etika so fucking much man
zesork don’t you mean peace?
@@Joe-ww8uw yeah sorry
2019 the year the world ended
The nosy bitch is us, in wanting to know too much about Stefan when his life should be private
My brother took his own life a week ago. He just couldn't keep going anymore. If you were there, or still are, please keep fighting. I love you.
I'm so sorry, I hope you're doing okay, please stay strong
Omg i'm so sorry, virtual hugs
I dont want it to seem like I'm using your brother's passing to push an agenda, but the shit facing young men these days is unbelievably tough. The world seems fundamentally averse to our existence.
I hope you're saying i love you to your brother because if not you're a dumb fuck who just makes other people feel worse
I'd understand too why the band was originally going to break up after Jenny Death because it felt like they jumped the shark with this and that project as a whole.
rest in peace travis 2002-2020
its been 3 years up til this week i miss you man thanks for introducing me to so much great stuff like this🙏🙏
my only true friend ♥️♥️
I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss ❤ there is an intense beauty in the music he shared with you helping you keep him with you, able to connect with him when slipping in the headphones. Again I am so very sorry for your loss. Strength and love to you ❤

in all honestly if it wasn't for knowing how much it'd hurt my family i would've done it already. still waiting on that day. this song will always mean the world to me.
i think a lot of us are in that same boat. but i think my family would almost be happy to see me go now. it sucks waiting for someone to get better for 30+ years and they never do.
@@RefugeeOfModernity My mom has been struggling with depressions all her life. Anyone in my family would hate to see her go. Hell, everyone in my family has some sort of depression. Sometimes its not even visible. My dads brother has been a chronical suicidal alcoholic since his teens. My dad didnt even know until he was 60
I like how they express three different states of comfort/wealth. Relaxed position, slightly comfortable position and in forced position / in pain. The relaxed man gets on his back soon , because he has a good life . Then the man in slightly comfortable position starts squatting , because the man having a good life let his remaining troubles fall on the shoulders of 2nd in command. And the man in forced position remains the same, because all the weight has been on his shoulders all the time.
This song puts the feelings I've had since I was 12 into words, I love you, Stefan
