Deftones is an American alternative metal band formed in Sacramento, California in 1988. It was formed by Chino Moreno (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Stephen Carpenter (lead guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums) and Dominic Garcia (bass). During their first five years, the band's lineup changed several times, but stabilized in 1993 when Cunningham rejoined after his departure in 1990; by this time, Chi Cheng was bassist. The lineup remained stable for fifteen years, with the exception of keyboardist and turntablist Frank Delgado being added in 1999. The band is known as one of the most experimental groups to have come from the alternative metal scene, and are sometimes dubbed by critics as "the Radiohead of metal".
White Pony is the third studio album by American alternative metal band Deftones, released on June 20, 2000 by Maverick Records. It marked a significant growth in the band's sound and is considered a turning point in their history in terms of experimentation, employing an increasingly experimental rock sound and incorporating influences from new wave, dream pop, trip hop, shoegaze, and post-rock into the alternative metal sound they had become known for.

I think Nu Metal would have been a more respected genre if bands like Limp Bizkit hadn't become the public face of it. Nu Metal was/is essentially a fusion of a ton of other genres that got big in the '90s, like Groove, Industrial, Alternative, and Funk Metal. With a foundation that diverse, it's a shame that the common conception of Nu Metal became "YEAH BRO THIS PARTY'S HARDCORE" or "WAHH MY ENNUI ANGST ANGST ANGST". At least Deftones showed some real substance instead of falling into the same pit as so many others.
I like almost all Nu Metal, including Limp Bizkit, but I do understand the hate that Nu Metal gets.
MJNation Limp Bizkit are a guilty pleasure of mine, but they (more accurately, Fred Durst) did not do the genre any favors.
+Mathew Viggiani Fred Durst is the Lars Ulrich of Nu Metal. I still like him tho because of his singing but not his weak songwriting. I enjoy all limp Bizkit albums
Nu metal could've been more respect if limp Bizkit, Linkin park, and Evanscene didn't become popular.
They both sound dated nowadays and I can't get through the album without cringing, it has nice catchy jams but it's no White pony, sorry. And don't care that much for evanescence I like the first album and second was decent but haven't been paying attention.
Digital Bath changed music for me, and consequently changed my life.
Dustin Clark that's what separates Deftones from so many bands they're compared to, some of their songs literally move you as a person. It's amazing really
For me, it was change. The one band that I listened too before deftones that was melodic was Mudvaynes L.D.50. Change was something that I found familier, yet it hit me so hard with how beautiful it was.
Just checked out this album for the first time, after watching this video and - HOLY SHIT! This stuff is both pretty diverse and highly creative. "Digital Bath" is also a favorite so far!
something about digital bath man… only some people get it. Best deftones song
Deftones: The only band to successfully bridge the gap between metal, shoegaze, and hip-hop.
On another note: Do you remember the Deftones episode of Music in High Places? Remember the acoustic version of Knife Party the did with just themselves and the cameras on the beach? Still one of the most gorgeous sounding and affective pieces of music I've ever heard.
Jesu bridge the gap between shoegaze and metal, but they go about it through drone doom, not hip-hop.
@@princealigorna7468 songs like 7 words and headup had some rapping in them
I have this whole performance on DVD! It was in Hawaii!
@@FirebirdCamaro1220 and Engine NO 9
Deftones and Korn are nu metal parents, they deserve a lot of respect for what they did achieve in music. They are bands that make music for pleasure :)
@@allencarey7336 the first 3 deftones albums were nu metal, no argument, all the staples of nu metal are there
My Little White Pony. A re-working of White Pony sung by the MLP cast....yes, including Back to School.
Weeiiirrrdddd.
That would be the greatest thing ever.
Now I'm just imagining two of the more calmer ponies (Rarity and Fluttershy) screaming "GO GET YOUR KNIFE!" on repeat.
My 14 Year old Brony Self and my 18 Year Old Nu-Metalhead Self wants this to happen.
I honestly love back to school and consider it a favourite of mine even though it was forced and disliked by the band. I also really liked how instead of being slapped on the end and ruining flow like most bonus tracks, it was at the beginning, and the use of the same chorus in that song and pink maggit makes the album have a sense of coming full circle and being very nicely bookended
now waiting for a review of around the SEEEEEEEEEXXXXXXXXXXX (but seriously I would love around the fur as well)
Anthony Graham PLES!!!
I want to go to a concert with you man. You're good peeps. Anyone who loves Tool and Deftones is cool to me
wdfmidevil Tool is fucking awesome.
LuchaKing agreed, favourites from tool?
The Film Freak both Tool and Deftones are in my top 5 favorite bands :)
The Film Freak These two bands are just bon apetito.
Change is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. Ive heard it a thousand times and enjoyed it everytime. And I will hear it a thousand more.
Agreed!!
WHY THE FUCKING FUCK HAVEN'T I HEARD ABOUT THIS BAND BEFORE??? It's...just wow.
They're amazing... Just Divine.
One of us. One of us.
I have the reissue where Back to School (Mini Maggit) was the opener.
The band didn't approve that release. They still stand by the original version (with the grey cover) without it. I bought that one the day it came out back in 2000, and loved it, love it still
White Pony is an album that you might not particularly like first few times round - but sure enough, over time it reveals itself on multiple listens and rewards you hugely for your perseverance. The only album of that era and genre that I still listen to start to finish.
and the production is amazing, never heard a better snare sound.
That describes Pinkerton for me
Change (In The House Of Flies) was also part of a film soundtrack called Queen of The Damned that is one of my absolute favourites which features Disturbed's Down with the Sickness as well as David Draiman singing Forsaken and Chester Bennington on System. The other artists involve Marilyn Manson, Papa Roach, Jay Gordon and Godhead. Fully recommend it to anyone!
That movie was garbage the soundtrack was great tho
My top 5 favorite tracks from White Pony
5. Digital Bath
4. Feiticeira
3. Elite
2. Knife Prty
1. Passenger
When my dad showed me this album (the first Deftones album I had ever heard) we had the reissue with “Back to School” on it. This album truly changed my life, and shaped what I like in rock and metal. Not many bands today could ever amount to what Deftones has done and is doing!
I think the few songs that aren't about drugs may be about the Denny's Stalker.
I REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE ANY CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO ALBUMS! >.
I just lost my shit.
I remember hearing Change for the first time when I was child watching DBZ Coolers Revenge on Toonami. Who else?
Coolers Revenge was where I discovered Deftones! They ended up being my favorite band of all time. Also discovered Drowning Pool and Breaking Point. Went out and bought the albums for all these bands
I have loved Deftones since they came out with Around The Fur. I was fortunate enough to see them live in 2007 before Chi's car accident.
White Pony and Diamond Eyes are easily my top 2 favorite albums of theirs. Around The Fur would be #3. Sadly, I haven't really listened to their last 2 albums, I really should tho. I also need to revisit Crosses too. It's been awhile.
"Really think about an album that you listen to from beginning to end and ask if you can get multiple emotions by listening to just one song and then a totally different set of feelings while listening to the next, all while the album feels completely connected and nothing feels out of place."
Colors by Between the Buried and Me
Honestly, if you simply remove the existence of the bands Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock, and the late 90's/early 2000s rock/nu-metal scene wouldn't have as bad of a rap as it has now. Deftones, Korn, SOAD and early Linkin Park have songs that will be seen in the same "classic" light as big hits from 90's Seattle groups or 70's arena rock bands.
I think the different way. Idk if it would've been as big if those two didn't just say fuck everyone and do their own style. It helped fuel Slipknot, Linkin Park, then newer bands like Hollywood undead despite everyone's opinion on them, from ashes to new and DED.
Fred Durst has a lot of influence on DED and people seem to love them
Or late 70s-early 80s punk
Digital bath is a trip hoppy ear-gasm!
Here's 2 funny stories about me & my weird music taste.
During a road trip in Texas, I brought a ton of CD's to listen to while on the road. I had it on Origin Of Symmetry by Muse, my mom asked what it was. I said "It's Muse, they're a trio. Their sound is kinda space rockish but it's the proficiency & complex guitar structure that adds more of an intense vibe to it." & right as I was talking my dad takes the CD out & puts in Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish & The Hot Dog Flavored Water. It gets better! When we got to Louisiana, we got caught in a traffic jam! XD
Around my Junior year of High School, I took art class. One of the first things we did was that we had to bring a personal item that we admire the most. Some kids brought stuffed animals or Call Of Duty (as you could tell some of these kids just needed the credit.) I was the only one that bought a music CD. It was Descensus by Circa Survive. & since it had no swearing in it, my teacher let me play it for the entire class. some people dug it, but one guy at the end of class went up to me & said "That was gay bro!" & immediately after that, some snobby girl legit said to me "That was weird, what was it?" I tell her " It's Circa Survive, they're kinda hard to define, but they're..." The guy comes back & mid sentence just shouts "GAY!" People laugh, the girl laughs, the teacher wasn't even in the room when this happened. All I did was slam my head on my desk in embarrassment. All of a sudden silence. The teacher comes back & says "Austin, what happened?"
Hello!Nurd Yeah its sad people are like that. I grew up with Linkin Park and lord knows people are always gonna hate on me for that. Also really sad people use "gay" as a insult.
Nu metal is my favorite genre in metal and I consider deftones to be among my personal favorite nu metal bands ever. I strongly recommend their music
When I saw that White Pony cover on your thumbnail, it immediately took me back to high school. This and And Justice for All were all I listened to in my freshman year.
Good choices!
Thanks for making this video! Really dope.
I'll never forget being up at 4am and seeing 'Change' on Mtv.
I listened to 'White Pony' for the first time while walking to my first house party!
So glad you did this one. It's a favourite of mine as well.
I don't know how I missed these guys , but I'm really liking the sound of this album! I'm definitely going to check them out, so thanks for the introduction, man!
A fantastic review of a fantastic album. Keep up the great work good sir!
Deftones is among my fav bands, great vid man! :D also I saw a Sevendust VIP ticket behind you? Awesome!
great review. i was so relieved when feiticeira popped up as the first track instead of mini maggit. =ω=
what are your thoughts on the enhanced version's bonus track, the boy's republic?
oh, and you spelled knife prty wrong. :b
Easily my favorite album period!!!! Great review! I was 16, when this came out, i couldn't sleep without listening to this album.
Deftones, has always been my favorite group
I absolutely love your channel. Excited to seem deftones in less than a month at Corpus Christi TX. And excited for you up coming reviews. Cheers man
This video got me into Deftones I thank you bro
Great video
Great album and great review.
Digital Bath put this band on the map for me over 10 years ago. Still love it to this day.
Sometimes I have to listen to the albums you're talking about before I watch your videos. This was Days of the New, and White Pony for me. Both in which i really like and enjoy. I've held off on listening to a Deftones album for so long, and i probably would've held off for even longer if it weren't for this video. This video encouraged me to listen to the White Pony album before I watched your video, and boy am i glad i did. This album is awesome. As soon as I finished with the album, I sat very briefly in silence until i said out loud to myself "Wow". I'll definitely be checking out more Deftones thanks to you, and I'm considering buying the CD. I enjoy watching your videos, and I hope the best of luck for you.
Deftones became my favorite band the first time I heard them and they still are! Deftones music fits any mood. If you are depressed/sad or happy or you just wanna chill or get pumped up. They do it for me.
Yeah!!! Subscribed !!
Nice one, thanks ! :D
I love Deftones.
Deftones love you.
Rocked Deftones love all.
you should review some Nonpoint, very good Nu-Metal band. heard them thru Wwe smackdown vs raw 2007 & 2008 :)
My friend got a haircut wearing a Deftones shirt. He got it cut ...Around the Fur. I just hope he doesn't get some... Mini Maggots in his hair. Perhaps he was just... Bored of the old cut? What if he's lying to me? What if he got it chopped off at a... Knife Party? I just hope they still let him into the... Boys Republic. If not, he could always be MY Passenger. I mean, we could invite Maynard James Keenan and jam out to a MX of A Perfect Circle... or we could just Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) I hope there isn't a zombie apocalypse. He'd look like he's seen the butcher. I don't know if he could handle so much... Gore. Luke, are you SEEING these shitty Deftones puns? I gotta tell ya, they're totally... reLhabia. Yo, we should go on that road trip some time! Just don't get sick or you'll... Dai The Flu... I am now completely fulfilled in life.
Nicholas Kreutzer corny
Nicholas Kreutzer Korny
You put too much effort into that
Thanks for reminding me how great this cd was/is
I saw these guys back in 2010 at the Orange Peel and to this day it is the best show I've ever seen. 2.5 hours of nearly the entire discography of the band plus a 3 song encore with Dimitri Minakakis taking on Maynard's parts for Passenger.
Most of the tone of my written work is influenced by the mood defones puts me in. I'm thankful for them.
"Literally the perfect highway drive song"
Dude. "Passenger" is about dogging. What on earth are you doing with your car?!
I got my friend into deftones after he listened to adrenaline for the first time on my suggestion. He asked if they had more albums and I showed him the other albums and he was very excited to see that.
One of my absolute favorite albums. Flawless.
This was the first album I listened to when I decided to give them a deeper look. Immediately I was hooked and now I can't get enough of it or Deftones in general 😁
Yesss thank you. I totally agree how amazing this album by deftones is and it's just so good.
I saw Deftones live and they were kick ass
The saddest thing is that the first time I heard this album I didn't make it past the first song because it started with mini maggot which I don't enjoy(the song it's lifted from is another story) digital bath reminds me of child's play when he drops the toaster, how do you feel about Interpol?
I don't mind Interpol but I admit I never listened to much of them so I can't say a lot.
+Rocked you should definitely check out there debut turn on the bright lights hopefully you'd enjoy as much as I do !
Two incredibly underrated bands. The Pixies as well
Loved this album when it first came out, and just as much today. Absolute classic!!
I love this album and band. This Album got me into the Deftones. Change is one of my favorite songs of all time. I also love the fact that next to being a fantastical singer, he's actually also a pretty good rapper (see cover of wicked with Korn).
This album is an ALL TIME CLASSIC!!
good video
Deftones has always been one of my favorite bands. The great thing about them in my opinion, is that none of their albums sound the same. They all have a unique theme or sound. White Pony is my personal favorite album. Although Koi No Yokan is a close second. Passenger is the song for me that makes it the best. I agree with you it would've been perfect for a movie or TV show. I always thought it would've been perfect for an episode of "Dexter".
Awesome stuff man. I recently started to listen to White Pony on repeat and it gets better with each listen. My favorite songs are Digital Bath, Knife Prty (I don’t know why but it really is written ‘’Prty’’ and not ‘’Party’’), Passenger and Change but there is no bad song in this album let’s be honest. I also quite like Back to school even though it wasn’t the original album opener.
I discovered this album fairly recently. Even though I'm not huge on metal, this is still an excellent record and a great gateway into others of its kind.
Good vid by the way. Are you ever going to do an ATF for The Battle of Los Angeles?
White Pony and Around The Fur, just two Deftones album I like to listen.
The wall of sound on digital bath os amazing. Sends shivers down my spine every time.
I finally got this album for Christmas and it's easily in my top 10. Every single song on it is great IMO, even Mini Maggit. I actually wasn't aware it was a bonus track at first but the way Pink Maggit loops back around and ties it full circle is what makes it one of my favorites.
One of my fave albums of all time, never get tired of listening to the album.
Love this album. Change(in the house of flies) So immersive.
What are your thoughts on Adrenaline & Around The Fur?
Loved around the fur!!
Incredible album around!
love these guys SOOOOO much omfg...
Great breakdown of my #1 album of all time. If I only could listen to one album for the rest of my life, I would choose White Pony by Deftones.
If I was left on a desert island and the only album I could listen to is White Pony, I'd be fine with that. Great video, man.
Thanks! Hopefully you make it off that island.
I picked this up while I was traveling in Australia, and didn't realize that I got the black Limited Edition with Boys Republic. I didn't realize it wasnt the normal edition until long after when a buddy was asking what the really cool song after Pink Maggit was.
Such a fantastic album and always great to hear you deliver your thoughts on records I love. Whilst it's an amazing album though, Diamond Eyes is actually my favourite Deftones album. It has the same blend of heavy and tranquil that White Pony has but with a greater dynamic between the two different styles and the heavy songs are some of the heaviest Deftones have made. Also, unpopular opinion but I kinda liked Back to School. Anyhow, great review :)
I like Back To School too lol. Around the fur is my favorite Deftones album.
As someone who was really into Korn, Linkin Park, and other such bands in my earlier teenage years, I'm dumbstruck as to how I managed to miss out on Deftones until now. This album is a masterpiece; probably going to add it to my playlist for my flight in 2 days.
Hey Rocked. Could you please do some sort of retrospective or look back on Wayne Static and Static X? It'll soon be two years since Wayne passed away, and I get the impression that you really like him and his music.
He and Static X were personally a huge influence on my musical upbringing, Wisconsin Death Trip, Machine and Shadow Zone in particular.
Do you think we'll see you review any SOAD albums in this series?
Aidan Brough I hope so. maybe "Steal this album" or mezmerize/Hypnotize
Could you possibly do a review of Saturday Night Wrist?
Hey darling there are more of us out there then you think rock on and keep doing what you doing💋🤘
I don't usually know songs by album. Alot of my favorite Deftones songs (Elite, Pink Maggit, Change In the House of Flies) are on this one though, and honestly not surprised. This is a fantastic album.
I think bands like Far, Failure, and Hum should also be as valued as deftones. Especially Hum as some of their songs (especially Little Dipper) would inspire Deftones to make White Pony.
Still one of my favorites 16 years later
"Passenger" is a bona fide masterpiece! It could very the perfect song!
Nitpicky detail: Teenager features turntable/beat work by DJ Crook. It is actually the first Team Sleep song.
One of my favorite albums as well. I even have that same Deftones shirt.
Also, I'm definitely in the minority here, but I don't think Mini Maggit is all that bad.
I've had it for years. Saw it randomly at a Hot Topic and my wallet just flew out of my pocket.
I loved this Album I wasn't born when this Album came out but man I wish I was around because is album is amazing! I am going to see Deftones in August i'v heard they are great live so stoked.
I've seen them several times and they always put on a good show (or at least I've never heard any complaints).
My most favorite song from White Pony is Street Carp!
Pink Maggit for me
this album is amazing, pink maggit is my favorite
Least your comment towards bronies was funny XD. I chuckled.
I know I'm a fan too
By far my favourite deftones album and in my top 3 albums all time.
I like that deftones and other underrated bands don't get enough attention. It feels like a reward for true music fans who want to expand their tastes.
Deftones should be part of the big four of Nu Metal which also include System of a Down, Slipknot and Disturbed.
Exactly what I keep saying there the only bands I actually like.
MegaMav101 This should totally be established like the Big Four of Thrash.
Yeah screw Korn, limp bizkit, linkin park. Deftones , System of a down, slipknot, and disturbed are were they at.
MegaMav101 Eh Korn is alright actually but they haven't made much good material recently, Limp Bizkit sucks and only Hybrid Theory and Meteora are classed as Nu Metal by Linkin Park.
disturbed suck how 'bout Deftones, System, Slipknot and Rage Against The Machine
One of the greatest albums I've ever heard on my life
Every song was lit & it's a rarity for me to like every single song on an album
That's my favorite album
First started listening to Deftones after finding Around the Fur at a local Value Village (Savers for those not in Canada or the Pacific Northwest), I liked the album but after awhile I stopped listening for a while. After a few weeks a video about programming MIDI drums done by Misha Mansoor appeared in my recommended videos list and he mentioned the drumming on Digital bath as being a great track for practicing getting used to programming ghost notes and other dynamic hits, also he really likes that track. From the first time I heard Digital Bath I was completely obsessed with Deftones and their ability to create dark and atmospheric music while still retaining the aggression and power of metal. Chino I think is probably one of the few vocalists that actually sounds mentally deranged and disturbed, and I like how he really doesn't sing in any particular key, just a dissonant scale that just works for their style. What can I say, Deftones are epic!
Misha is the man! Got to meet him over a year ago. Great guy.
I listened to a couple deftones albums after this video and can't wait to listen to gore after I finish koi no yokan I love sound and for me white pony was eerily calming yet keeps you alert for me
So.. how much does it cost on Patreon to have you do a full Deftones retrospective..?
Cool video, but be wary of very flashy lights during some parts of the video. don't watch this in a dark room hah :)
Such a badass album! To this day the best concert I saw was deftones with incubus opening. White pony is a masterpiece!
For whatever reason, the first version of this album I heard had Mini Maggit as the opener, Feiticeira as the second track, and Pink Maggit as the closer. I actually liked the arc that set up.
god damn, over ten years and i can not stop coming back to this album. Over ten years and i cannot stop coming back to digital bath. Digital bath is my fucking jam. Knife party is my second.
Knife Party is a classic
raymond proseus my white pony cd doesn't spell it that way
raymond proseus I think iTunes spells it that way
chino did the knife party female part live a few years ago in sydney was pretty good surprisingly.
I remember when I knew the release date for white pony so I started listening to around the fur getting hype. I got white pony and listened and was like “what?” This is nothing like sound the fur but I still loved it. From then on I never listen to an old album of there’s before a new one cuz it’s not gonna be the same. It’s always very good though.
