In mercenaries intro you can see the traditional atlas firing it's AC20 blasting off the arm of a ZEU-X. In this video this is the atlas variant carrying a Guass rifle instead of the AC20.
Simple: easy-to-kill target. Pilot of the vulture got a bit over-eager and ran out in front in a relatively thinly-armored (at least when compared to some others in its exact same weight class) fire support 'mech. It doesn't help that said vulture pilot tried to face down about 295 tons worth of walking metal, including an Atlas, all by itself.
If Atlas mechs existed in real life, they must be terrifying. Knowing you're going to throw all of your stuff at it, and it's just going to lurch back a bit and just... keep... coming.
Apparently there's an inherent flaw in the Timber Wolf design that causes it to be completely destroyed in every game cinematic (with the exclusion of the original MC). Clan Wolf working over time to keep those puppies out of the hands of others!
The Timber Wolf in the MechCommander cinematic does get destroyed too, doesn't it? The IS lance takes advantage of his attempts to duel and keep hitting his rear armor.
@HighfireX Why not? It gives a sense of realism, especially when in the real world, when you have a monster build out 100 tons of metal and wires, you're not exactly going to get a 'mech that's light on its feet or twirl around gracefully like a ballerina.
Well, thanks to Michael Stackpole's writing, that became the norm; hard to salvage from the defeated when the largest part left after the blast is the size of your fingernail. *rolls eyes*
@ChristopheCoffin The way the Mad Dog was firing its (M) lasers, (L) lasers and LRMS, I would presume that by the time it had taken down the Catapult, the Mad Dog was badly over heating and couldn't fire any of its weapons.
@Gallowell My point is, it's biggest weapon is an AC20 mounted on its right hip, the weapon + ammo is heavier than all its other weapons combined, yet the weapon appears to be this tiny little gun that's attached to his hip where it wouldn't even have a big firing arc...
This was one of my favorite clips from the MW series because the it was one of the first times I can recall seeing a battlemech so convincingly animated on the run. The Mad Dog (one of my personal favorite chassis) in the clip appears to have a very natural stride, at least from the angles they use. On the other hand, the heavy hitters that arrive on the scene after the Mad Dog goes down seem to be moving like clay-mation figures. They don't look quite as natural. Or is it just me?
I could imagine the look on the face of the pilot who was piloting the Timberwolf as the Atlas raised its arms and primed its Arrow IV. What a nice revenge after taking a double load of LRM 20's.
I would absolutely LOVE to play this game again, unfortunately, the patches do not work for my computer :-( MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries was the best of the MechWarrior games, not just in game-play, but the opening and ending cinematics.
This short is actually fairly well directed. It would have been much better had there been radio chatter amongst the pilots, like there was in the intro.
needs 6 assault mechs, at least 1 atlas (check) and 1 zeus (nope, unless I missed an old graphics version) and 2 awesomes..... the rest must be either fedsun assaults, or stalkers.... because stalkers.......
Man I this is one of my favorite ending videos. Even though in game graphics are better than this video these days. The fight scenes, pacing and even the music were all really well done considering when it was made.
You know, so far battletech is the only mech series that makes fast and hard to destroy mechs look plausible. Gundam has non-gundam mechs, but those seem to be made of glass and plastic explosives. Battletech has a more even field, and I think the mad cat and catapult designs could actually work as real military hardware, minus the lasers of course.
@recniabsal Basically, it's because Tukkayid stopped their Blitzkreig. The clans started with a technological edge, but with the treaty of Tukkayid the industrial juggernaught of the Inner Sphere was able to ramp up production and research, closing the gap if not tech wise, then numerically. IS tech is still inferior in a lot of ways to clan tech, but it's also more diverse...and again, numbers. I agree though; clans are pretty badass.
That and what mainly gave the Clans their edge was that the IS was unused to fighting them and their tactics. That 15 year reprieve levelled the playing field immensely. While the IlClan era still eventually happened, the Clans had to fight a *fuckload* harder than they did in the Clan War when they had to take on the Republic of the Sphere, who had Tech that was close to par (not to mention Clan Sea Fox selling shit to everyone, which the Republic took advantage of at length). Should also be noted by that point that many clans had adopted some IS Tech as well, such as Clan Wolf's adoption of the Davion-built RAC/5. Course, Clan Wolf continued to be the "good" Clan in that era as well, notably in at least one case freeing most of their Republic Bondsmen and allowing them to pursue their own paths (either becoming full Warriors of Clan Wolf or being allowed to leave).
I remember this somewhat. I still have Mercenaries--the CD of the full game came packaged with a video card me and my sister got when I was a younger teenager--I loved the crap out of that game and I still think the mostly metal soundtrack is one of the best around in terms of game music. But between that and the other MW2 music, I know I'm not alone.
@HaloSpartan96 Sounds like you found an old MW2 game. Unless they've made an updated version that I'm unaware of, all the old Mechwarrior 2 games at best run in Windows 98 at the latest. They're all mostly still kinda DOS-based.
it's not just you, it looks like the first part was done with loving care, interesting camera angles, meaty animations, attention to how the mechs come apart... and then they ran out of time. The Mad Cat explosion in particular is kind of pathetic.
well...i mean commando vs. mad dog, you're probably going to be screwed either way, not to mention you're penned into a canyon and can't really go anywhere if you wanted to run... also, gotta love those headshots on those catapults in this game, why was that so easy?
Microsoft owns FASA Interactive and had nothing to do with the creation of the Dark Ages storyline, and no it wasn't Fanpro either....it was done by Wizkids Games, Jordan Weiseman in particular.
I used to love getting in the tiniest mech you could, think it was the body suit or something and put the fastest engines you could in it with 2 small pulse lasers and run like 250km/hour trying to take on a full sized mech. It was basically 1 hit and you died but you were so fast and small it was hard for them to hit you. Anybody else ever do that? lol
+tlv156 In MW4:mercs there' s a mission to destroy the factories for the Templar if I remember correctly. It's a solo mission, and they're defended by an entire mech company, including multiple assaults. After repeated tries, the only way I finished it was taking the lightest mech I had (don't remember which one), stripping everything off except a couple of small lasers and maxing the engine out. And than I simply avoided the enemies altogether, destroyed the turret controls, and focused on only completing the objectives and getting the hell out of dodge. They took out half my mech in a single PPC hit to the back while I ran for the evacuation zone. But they had no chance of keeping up with me, and I brought what's left of my mech to the dropper.
+tlv156 There was some kind of bug that ignored weight restrictions for the elemental suits so in addition to the engines, jump jets and weapons I could add ridiculous amounts of armor to the point where you could just take more AC20 rounds than a lance of mechs could carry. It was fun for a laugh, but being invincible in 'instant action' gets dull fast.
I remember playing this game when I was like... 12. I was bad at games back then so I could never beat the last mission. I couldn't manage to control the torso and legs independently and years later, I didn't have the game to go back to. Being able to see the good end is nice.
Technicality: it's not an Awesome, too tall. Fairly (95%) sure that it's a Zeus. Unless you think the Mauler (what the Kodiak shoots down at the end) is an Awesome, in which case I can see the mistake.
Isn't it spelled "DFA," meaning "Death from Above"? I still have my copy of the game, but I don't recall engine damage working that way. This was Activiction's attempt to emulate as close as possible FASA's game--including the ridiculous 30 metre range increments. Engine damage just means you generate more heat every turn--it doesn't mean you can't run. Only Gyro or Leg Actuator damage can do that.
The scariest aspect about the Atlas for me is that the cockpit is, despite outward appearances, friggin tiny! Good luck hitting the left eye with enough boom to actually injure the pilot. Lucky onehit kills are extremely rare on it... combine that with 19 tons of armor...yikes! Of course, that is for the Mechwarrior games, in CBT the chance to hit that cockpit is exactly the same as for every other mech.
@VazzaPrime The Crusader ideology didn't fracture far enough at Tukayyid, hell, the entire Refusal War proved a whole point, well when the Falcons and Wolves seriously weakened themselves. But you're right about the entire Counterattack arc when Clan Smoke Jaguar literally got smoked.
It was actually an IS Commando. Granted, it looked like an IS battle suit, but you have to remember that every 'Mech is designed and built to different parameters. Still, putting a Commando in a unit like that is foolhardy, as they are more designed to be recon and scout 'Mechs, not front line units, so I am not surprised the Commando went down so easily and quickly against a Clan 'Mech that was more double is size and tonnage and firepower.
@Aetrion Again it is the time line 2457 to the 2700 take a look at the SH that medium laser on it's arm takes up over half the arm. Also size does play a part a atlas (17 meters) is nearly twice as large a a shadowhawk (9 to 10 meters). So a ac 20 on a atlas would be rather massive if mounted on a medium mech but would be half the size on a assault mech or appear small. Also there are different types of Autocannons the ac20 represents calibers between 150mm to 203mm.
Oh, yeah - that *is* a Mauler that drops last, not an Awesome (no PPC shots; back in MW2 they were the very distinctive 'bouncy blue balls of death' :P) but with the shoulder shields, you can understand the confusion...thanks!
I love the absolute BM that once the vulture legs the commando, he shoots it while it was face down to 100% kill the pilot, then launches a full salvo into a catapult. Totally fits with Clan Smoke Jag
@KoalaNoMarch I don't think so, because the bug was addressed on the official FASA release sheet, so it didn't work on any of the discs. Unless you are playing from a downloaded version, where that particular bug had been tweaked.
Does anyone remember that this isn't the COMPLETE ending? After this there was an animation of a guy sitting on the beach in the sun having a drink? As if he had retired rich???
@Aetrion What are you talking about? I just provided you with information from the books. You made it clear that the schematics did not match up and i told you why. It is the time line.
I think it is fair enough to say that the Jade Falcons achieved one of their objectives with Olalla, the only thing was they could not hold it, after the unexpected assault by ComStar on their resupply lines and the reinforcements that were flooding their lines from Hamtulips.
@dsgatling I still think the AC20 on the atlas looks way too small, I mean compare that with the AC5 on a Shadowhawk, did they somehow manage to miniaturize the bore of projectile weapons?
Continuation of the last comment... The guild/organization system would ofcoarse be in the form of Mercenary Companies. You would be able to choose freelance or join another person's mercenary company. In either case staying as such until you have enough credits to start your own company if you wish :) All M2: Mercenaries features would be available: Mech Bay, Dropship (owned or contracted), Office, Terminal, etc. Sigh... I hope such a Battletech game is in the works.
Continuation of my last comment... The MMO verson would still have contracts pitting you against NPCs but would implement a new type: counter contracts. For example you accept a contract from Draconis Combine for a Search and Destroy mission, the counter contract would be to protect that target(s) which some other mercenary outfit would take on :) Un/successful contracts help shape the powers of each Periphery power: Combine, House Davon, etc. or even against the clans.
Nope, I got the disc and game just fine. I do live in New Zealand so its possible I have a different release to the one you do but post update he's still available. 100 tonne aerospace fighter. Flying his slow lumbering pos fighter which is about as effective as an extra 30 odd tonne mech on the field. but You dont have to pay for his repairs or anything and aerospace support isnt that expensive.
@Aetrion Auto cannons (which fire shells) have different rates of fire just like guns do. Shells however cah hove fins or other flight material attached to them. Consider the U.S. their bushmaster is a auto cannon (25mm) yet it's rate of fire is slow. The 7.5 cm KwK 37 from WW2 was one of the earliest AC yet it's ROF is on par with that of the bushmaster. Take a look at the atlas for Merc and the one in mechwarrior reboot. Same AC but different ROF. Ammo type does play a part.
@keljubenrezy Not exactly sure what you're replying to since I wrote whatever it was ages ago, but the reason why gauss/ppc combination mechs don't make a lot of sense is not because the weapons have different ranges, but because the weapons have wildly different heat generation. Anything with 2 PPCs or more (especially ER versions) needs serious extra heat sinks, Gauss rifles need none, it's not leveraging the strength of the gauss rifle to combine both weapons ultimately.
In clan wars there was different technology avaiable. They had no Arrow Missiles yet. In FedCom Civ-War omnitechnology was more popular and modifications to weaponery was introduced (along with Arrow's) But not before 3058.
@dsgatling You mean the one that just carries around a giant gattling gun under his arm? That one really does look badass... I like all the designs for it, but the rules of the game don't always line up with the models. Like the original Thunderbolt design, that thing carries a gun that's bigger than some light mechs, rule wise its just a single large laser though...
Both were in the red after I killed it I guess due to the explosion and heat generated from close proximity. Thanks for the clear up ;) And yes its DFA I dont know why I was thinking Dead or Alive XD
@Aetrion Actually, it makes perfect sense since they have similar range and speed. if you want to alpha fire snipe someone, a mix of gauss and PPCs can one-shot many mechs from over 800 yards away.
Its kinda weird that one of those clan mechs is Kodiak that is second line mech that is usually found from garrison duty. Not in frontlines like other two mechs (Timber Wolf and Mad Dog) that are both first line mechs.
Mercenaries was a incredible game, oh I still remember that I loved to use the Centurion . . . Im just wondering what kind of weapon did the Atlas fired upon the Mad Cat to vaporized it that quickly, Autocannon/20 ? It looked more like a missile :0
Most atlas pilots redused to go with kerenksy on his exodus. So the ending showing an atlas triumphing over the clan mech is a symbol for the old ways of the IS winning over the clans
After further review, I realized that maybe I don't know what the heck I'm talking about...it doesn't really resemble anything I'm used to because M$ screwed up all the mech designs anyway.
@Aetrion First that is a rotary AC not a gatling MG Second the thunder bolt is older than the atlas by some 200 years 2495 to 2700. It is only logical that in 2495 a large laser would be a assault class weapon and be large. Do note that the size of the thunderbolts large laser has decreased in size over the years. And that the thunderbolt has been demoted from assault mech to low end heavy mech. Compared to modern mechs and omni-mechs the thunder bolt barely rates as a medium mech.
I love how the Atlas just takes the missiles impact and doesn't even slow it down. You can almost see a smirk on its face right then and there
Rule of thumb: Never fuck with an Atlas, unless you yourself are in a 100 ton 'mech.

And with that, ComStar set the Clanners back 15 years.
only the crusaders the wardens didn't want the invasion.
0:50 Hillarious how this Atlas seemingly "smiles" and keep walking at the clanners after that missile barrage...
In mercenaries intro you can see the traditional atlas firing it's AC20 blasting off the arm of a ZEU-X. In this video this is the atlas variant carrying a Guass rifle instead of the AC20.

>Mauler goes down
AND NOTHING OF VALUE WAS LOST
Simple: easy-to-kill target. Pilot of the vulture got a bit over-eager and ran out in front in a relatively thinly-armored (at least when compared to some others in its exact same weight class) fire support 'mech. It doesn't help that said vulture pilot tried to face down about 295 tons worth of walking metal, including an Atlas, all by itself.
If Atlas mechs existed in real life, they must be terrifying. Knowing you're going to throw all of your stuff at it, and it's just going to lurch back a bit and just... keep... coming.
General Kerensky purposely designed it that way
@@Raven236 "As ugly and foreboding as conceivable, so that fear itself will be our ally."
It gives a sense of realism, especially when in the real world, when you have a monster build out 100 tons of metal and wires, you're not exactly going to get a 'mech that's light on its feet or twirl around gracefully like a ballerina.
atlas is fearsome not entirely for it's laser and missile, but its fist. their hands could grab anything and kill someone in melee range.
The finest hour of the Com Guards, right here. Redde creditori tuo, fucko.
Well, thanks to Michael Stackpole's writing, that became the norm; hard to salvage from the defeated when the largest part left after the blast is the size of your fingernail. *rolls eyes*
@ChristopheCoffin The way the Mad Dog was firing its (M) lasers, (L) lasers and LRMS, I would presume that by the time it had taken down the Catapult, the Mad Dog was badly over heating and couldn't fire any of its weapons.
this was always my favorite cinematic out of all the mechwarriors, even the new ones
@Gallowell My point is, it's biggest weapon is an AC20 mounted on its right hip, the weapon + ammo is heavier than all its other weapons combined, yet the weapon appears to be this tiny little gun that's attached to his hip where it wouldn't even have a big firing arc...
Love the way the atlas thanks the enemy mech for blowing the cobwebs off!
This is my favorite of all the 'Mech games. The music is epic!
I would absolutely LOVE to play this game again, unfortunately, the patches do not work for my computer :-(
MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries was the best of the MechWarrior games, not just in game-play, but the opening and ending cinematics.
This short is actually fairly well directed. It would have been much better had there been radio chatter amongst the pilots, like there was in the intro.
0:59 Timberwolf "Oh Shit FREEBIRTH @#@$%#$#"
Does this count as a Steiner scout lance ?
Yes.
Not really; they're one assault mech short. And not all of them are Atlases, either.
Cheers, mate, I got a good laugh out of your comment!
needs 6 assault mechs, at least 1 atlas (check) and 1 zeus (nope, unless I missed an old graphics version) and 2 awesomes..... the rest must be either fedsun assaults, or stalkers.... because stalkers.......
Far worse. ComGuards.
Damn, I miss playing this game so bad. Loved the mode where you handled all the money and which missions you wanted to do. Awesome game!
Man I this is one of my favorite ending videos. Even though in game graphics are better than this video these days. The fight scenes, pacing and even the music were all really well done considering when it was made.
This game had a fantastic soundtrack.
@recniabsal
Basically, it's because Tukkayid stopped their Blitzkreig.
This was the computer game that got me into gaming on the computer. Back on my parents old IBM w/ windows 95.
Kodiak and MadCat, 4 v 2... still going in ballz deep. Talk about having STEEL ballz! Fuck yeah!
it's not just you, it looks like the first part was done with loving care, interesting camera angles, meaty animations, attention to how the mechs come apart... and then they ran out of time. The Mad Cat explosion in particular is kind of pathetic.
Silly Khan Hoyt deciding to run the ComStar gauntlet just to show how brave he is. Silly Jags.
well...i mean commando vs. mad dog, you're probably going to be screwed either way, not to mention you're penned into a canyon and can't really go anywhere if you wanted to run...
also, gotta love those headshots on those catapults in this game, why was that so easy?
There's a reason these guys are called Mercenaries. They work for the highest bidder and have been known to use 'Mechs from all over the Inner Sphere.
Com Guards: Victory
Clan Wolf: 2
Clan Ghost Bear: 1
Clan Jade Falcon: Draw
Clan Smoke Jaguar: 0
Clan Nova Cat: 0
Clan Steel Viper: 0
Clan Diamond Shark: 0
Ten objectives to four
Epic. One can only hope that if MW5 ever happens it can even begin to live up to this one. Love how the Atlas wades through the LRM's at 0:50 :)
Mechwarrior 5 mercenary and its glorious check it out
1:19
That low-angle shot alone makes this FMV.
I remember playing this game when I was like... 12. I was bad at games back then so I could never beat the last mission. I couldn't manage to control the torso and legs independently and years later, I didn't have the game to go back to. Being able to see the good end is nice.
well that Kodiak should have been all over those innershere serats!
9 mechs go at it and one comes out alive. Damn cool clip.
@scottmog Funny, considering the Timber Wolf was half-based on the Catapult.
And that is one of the many reasons why you USE YOUR U/AC EARLY AND OFTEN!
I once managed to get two headshots on an Atlas with a Timber Wolf.
Don't believe me? I recorded it and uploaded it to this channel.
@Aetrion Actually the :LRM tubes are to the Left and right those 6 tubes are actually lasers for the old style atlas
@gribae
Agreed!
Sometimes I feel like building up a PC that would be able to run this game. I just don't have the time...
wow that vulture pilot in the beginning was epic, was that an elemental the pilot slaughtered? at :0:12
Looked like a Commando to me; too big to be an Elemental. Elemental' are clan soldiers too.
yea but look at the way it dropped the weapon and fell to its knees, looked more human
Sasha Fierce
That was his leg getting blown off.
The Elemental was Clan tech, looks more like a Battlesuit.
It was YOU, after you bought your own planet.
YOU DO NOT FUCK WITH THE OLD MONSTER! DAMN I love the Atlas!
@dsgatling I still think the AC20 on the atlas looks way too small, I mean compare that with the AC5 on a Shadowhawk, did they somehow manage to miniaturize the bore of projectile weapons?
Mechs and their weapons have all sorts of scaling issues.
Am I the only one that found it hilarious seeing a Catapult lumbering behind 3 Assault 'Mechs?
Everything about this ending is just perfect.
Ammo type does play a part.
the memories
Such a gritty game, and so ahead of its time with all the custimization abilites. I hope MWLL is half the game MW2Mercs was in its time.
@Aetrion
Actually, it makes perfect sense since they have similar range and speed. if you want to alpha fire snipe someone, a mix of gauss and PPCs can one-shot many mechs from over 800 yards away.
Yeah maybe an Arrow IV or even a Single Shot Rocket (although if it was this is it's first canon appearance).
Gauss rifle. 🤔
Most atlas pilots redused to go with kerenksy on his exodus.
So the ending showing an atlas triumphing over the clan mech is a symbol for the old ways of the IS winning over the clans
Understatement of the century...
What was that Steiner Scout Lance doing there?
Wouldn't surprise me since the Praetor Martial was of Steiner origin...
After further review, I realized that maybe I don't know what the heck I'm talking about...it doesn't really resemble anything I'm used to because M$ screwed up all the mech designs anyway.
Like the Comstar, baby!
