  • In today's video we'll be taking a look at and comparing my Azo Green Yellow PY129 paints.
    PY129 is a pigment that I have a love/hate relationship with. I hate the color itself but love the greens I can mix with it.
    I hope you enjoy the comparison videos 🙏

    I only bought my first Azo Yellow Green based on seeing Steve Mitchell use it, but love ugly yellow greens. I call this color ‘baby poop green.’ When I was doing graphic design, this was one of my favorite colors for page design because it coordinated so well with so many other colors. Now I love it for foliage and mixing.

    I love this color for neutralizing reds. And it's a key component in mixing skin tones for me. Py129 mixes great greens, browns, peachy corals... I love it! I have White Nights and the Da Vinci versions.
    I have both Py150 and 129 in my palette. Py150 is more of a pure, earthy yellow so I use it as a main mixing yellow. Py129 I kinda use in place of a traditional lemon yellow since it has that green bias.

      It's interesting to hear how different people mix skin tones. Skin tones are completely new to me as I've never painted portraits.
      Oh great to hear that you have both. Thank you for watching and commenting 🙏

      oooooo for neutralizing reds? i'm going to try that. i've had this color a while and never knew quite what to do with it. it's too intense to use on it's own for landscapes.

    I like this color with quinacridone coral or similar colors for paler skin tones.
    It’s also one of my favorites for playing with greens.

    I have the Van Gogh version, it's an unusual paint. I tend to add it to greens when creating different hues in foliage, trees or grasses in a landscape.
    I love the mix you did with Cobalt Blue, I'll have to try that.

    Thank you for showing the mixes! These are great. I need to play around with PY129 more!
    That said, I couldn't live without PY150 which is by far my favorite yellow. I love how it transforms from a warm yellow in the mass tone to a cooler yellow when diluted - and it can really glow.

    Saludos y gracias.

    I have both nickel azo yellow (PY150 daniel smith) and rich green gold (PY129 daniel smith) on my palette. My eyes see that PY150 mixes a much brighter green than the PY129. I love the way they both push other pigments around when dropped in too.

    I actually love this pigment on its own too as it reminds me of pure olive oil... I'm asking myself the same thing regarding PY150, which I adore as well and is my main mixing yellow. It would be nice and helpful to see a follow up video update on your experimentations and your conclusion

    I'm a minority in this I'm sure but I'm not a fan of Azo green for the same reason I don't reach for Quin gold... the major hue shift from masstone to dilution. I find it frustrating, like trying to paint with multiple colors on the brush at the same time. Also M Graham isn't really that expensive for a high quality artist grade paint, the problem is it only comes in 15ml tubes. If you do the math it's actually one of the lower priced per ML, at least in it's native USA market (geography matters when buying, it's always cheaper to buy local to you). It's not a favorite of mine, I don't have the drying problems other have experienced but I find it very heavy to work with and on the opaque side, also the colors are almost too vibrant when used in a brand specific palette.. again personal preference but my 12 well MG Christmas present to myself a couple of years ago is one of my biggest buying regrets. Should have bought a trio first and given it a good try instead of getting caught up in the hype. If someone likes super bright, high chroma colors and struggles to get enough pigment out of their colors it's the brand for you. It's also an extremely efficient paint, you get a ton of pigment with very little of it, and it barely shrinks at all when dry. White Nights is perfectly fine paint but watch the lightfastness, they struggle with fugitive pigments and the ratings on the labels are not accurate in all cases.. know your pigments and buy selectively and you can do a fine working palette.

    • @jennw6809
      @jennw6809 2 роки тому +1

      I find M. Graham's strength as a brand is that they always have the highest pigmentation, so they are great for colors that have low tinting strength, like Viridian and Cobalt Violet. But yeah, their paints have a ton of personality and almost always granulate less than I'd like. Plus I don't love the sticky feeling on my brush or the way it sticks my sketchbook pages together :)

  • @hannahthufvesson
    @hannahthufvesson 2 роки тому +5

    I have both the White Nights and the M. Graham and they behave very differently when I mix them with other colors. The M. Graham one blends easier with my other paints, and has a much higher tinting strength and is brighter. The White Nights one makes paler and more muted washes, and also has a tendency to look granulating/textured in mixes. It's _very_ apparent with some of my paints, like the M. Graham Quin. Rose for example. It's also shinier in masstone, my pet peeve. 🙈
    My favourite one is from QoR!

    My thoughts exactly. I got the Van Gogh half pan to test the pigment but it doesn't seem different enough from py150 to keep both in my permanent palette. Maybe in a mixing palette setup. I do love the mix with Ultramarine though, it reminded me of Aquarius Green from Roman Szmal. I think it makes a nice base for olive greens. I do like to neutralize it quite a bit though, with warm blues and violets

    These arent that far off from py150, but add a little blue and youre there. Im not sure if the color name charteuse is used as often these days? This is a great mixer, especially for greens. Ive recently mixed with PB60 for a darker convenience green. I have seen a few artists use py129 with its complimentary color of a dark wine or dark violet. Perlyene violet , napthanmide maroon, claret, bordeaux, etc. TFS . Love the swatches and mixes. 😊😆

    I don’t think PY129 and PY150 are the same. PY150 is more yellow and bright while PY129 is more earthy and green. I think they have different uses. I personally think PY129 is more versatile in a landscape palette since you can mix beautiful greens and browns with it.
