The story goes like this: On Manor Farm, the animals, spurred by Old Major's dream of a free and equal society, revolt against their cruel human master, Mr. Jones, and take control of the farm. They rename it "Animal Farm" and establish their own rules, summarized in the maxim "All animals are equal." Initially, the farm prospers, and the animals are enthusiastic about their new-found freedom and shared responsibilities.
However, as the pigs, who are the smartest of the farm animals, begin to take control of the governance, the initial ideals of equality begin to deteriorate. Led by the cunning pig Napoleon, who gradually usurps power, the hierarchy on the farm shifts, and the pigs start to resemble the humans they overthrew. Napoleon uses propaganda, controlled by his sidekick Squealer, and terror, enforced by his loyal dogs, to consolidate his power and privilege.
As the story concludes, the other animals find themselves in a position that is as bad, if not worse, than when they were under Mr. Jones. The pigs, who walk on two legs, mingle freely with humans, blurring the lines between man and animal. The chilling final reflection of the animals peering through the windows sees the pigs indistinguishable from humans, encapsulating the novel’s message about the corrupting influence of power and the ease with which ideals can be betrayed.
