Strip Piecing with Scraps! The Beautiful Descending Blocks Pattern.

- This quilt pattern was originally made to be a doll quilt. It is the perfect size for a table topper though. I use fairly flat batting so that I can put "decor" on it. I hope you will dig through your scraps (or yardage) and spend an afternoon playing in your fabric for the joy of it!
Here is a link to the Descending Squares Pattern:

Thank you! Love the tip about borders "going around the corner". Darling little quilts! You are one of the very few folks I enjoy listening to on a tutorial [I can count them on one hand]. Thank you for sharing 😀
Sew sew sew!!
You are teaching just everything I was thinking.... Too cool
Thank you for your comments!
As a finished piece it looked like it must have been so complicated to get all the square together in the center. And then as I watched the whole process I was just blown away. What a wonderful pattern, and thank you for making free until September!
I hope you have SO MUCH FUN making this!
I love your videos like this. You reveal your thinking, thus encouraging us to do the same.....free the mind to do the work. Love the little quilts 🤩. Thanks for the video 😊
Thank you for the kind comment!!
These small quilts are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like them!
Such a fun way to use scraps. I am beginning to love brights. I've always preferred earth tones.
I have never made a doll quilt…but now I am very tempted
Some temptations are SO worth succumbing to!! This is one of those!
You are just marvellous! Inspirational, unique little projects. I look forward to next video, thank you
More to come!
Thank u for this video! I have already completed my center and rewatching this video to get ideas on borders. I wanted to do a small square table topper and then this wonderful video came up. Perfect! In the past I did a raw edge weaving table top which I like but the descending bloc pattern is easier to do. Your video on machine binding was a huge help too. Thank you so much!
Wonderful!! I'm so glad that it went well for you!
I am so excited to try this little quilt! Thank you for sharing it!
Hope you enjoy it!
We're grateful for your tutorials!
Glad you like them!
A beautiful little quilt.
Love how you do your videos. Fast and to the point. No messing around telling stories not related to the project video. Congratulations
I appreciate that!
All so beautiful Thank you for sharing with us x
You are so welcome
I love all the animal prints that you have.
Me too!
I love love love your videos. I would love see something using batiks. You have a great sent of colour and I love simple quilt patterns.
I just bought a new batik fabric today. Tee hee...
You’re so organized! Amazing ❤
I do like order. It helps my brain to create.
I love this doll quilt. I am not a fan of scrap quilts generally, but I think you've changed my mind. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Thank you for your kind comment!

Awesome! Welcome!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on piecing the scrappy borders. ❤
I do love random feeling, scrappy borders!
This is so sweet! Thanks for sharing! I've just cut my strips for trip around the world using your method. I'll get them sewn soon. When complete, it will be the "other side" of a tshirt quilt for my daughter. Not the back side, mind you - she wanted a pretty side! I'm excited to try it with the mutes tones 😘
Sounds like you are having loads of fun!!
You are amazing! You inspire me! Love you site!!🥰
Thank you so much!
Thank you, just ordered the pattern. Your explanations on the process and color choicesare very informative.
Wonderful!
love your quilts and color play. I say done is better than perfect. Happy quilting!
Yes! Thank you!
Finally! Finally I understand this type of quilt. I have watched a number of tutorials for this type of quilt, but could never wrap my head around it. You made this simple to follow. Even I might be able to do this. Thanks! Live your channel.
Wonderful!
Thank you for the free pattern. I can't wait to try it!
Have so much fun!
Beautiful quilts! Thank you for showing us how you do this. You are a blue ribbon quilter and a blue ribbon teacher!
Thanks for watching!
Very pretty! Looks like fun!❤
It was!
I absolutely LOVE your quilting attitude (because I share it). I make quilts for loved ones and good friends, learn something new with each one and very much enjoy the process. I read somewhere there was a quilter's motto "If it looks okay as you're riding by on a galloping horse, it's okay. " Too wordy. I like your condensed version much better; takes less time to say and conveys the message perfectly. Thank you for sharing your expertise! ......and for making me laugh. It's the BEST medicine, and let's face it, if you're making a quilt, big or little, at some point, maybe several points, you'll probably NEED a piece or two of candy and a laugh.
Quilting is what I do for happiness and sanity. I agree that it IS the best medicine.
Thank you for this great video! My 8 yo granddaughter is learning to sew. I saved this to inspire her and hopefully sew this little quilt! God bless❤
Wonderful!
I watched your video and enjoyed your attitude so much that I became a subscriber!
Wow, thank you!
Thank you for this pattern & your instructional video. I've always wanted to make a large 1" pieced quilt & this will help me to see if I will have the patience, but on a smaller scale. Much appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
Looks great. This tube method is just about my favorite way to make a quilt. So many options. Love it and love your videos.

Just found YOU! And love your quilting ideas! Will be following, and already plan on making a couple of your patterns. Thanks a bunch…of fabric!😊

Love this video and tutorials. All three doll sized quilts were beautiful. Good instructions and tips. I love scrappy borders and hints on color and placement for this type of project. I get something useful out of every video. Too many projects and too little time. Your inspiration to make efficient use of time and scraps is appreciated.
So glad!

As a beginning sewer, your approach to quilting makes me feel like I can put something together. I bought a gorgeous fabric on a whim a few months ago and I'm hopeful I can use it in a quilt. Thanks for sharing your skills.
You can do it!
I am addicted to your videos! I love them and now I can’t decide which to make first! 🎉
Yay! Thank you! Add chocolate and it is the PERFECT addiction!

It is such a fun, fast technique!
Thank you for the pattern. Great explanation!

Wow, amazing!
You are the best! Love ALL your tutorials. Thanks!
That means an extra lot coming from one of my MOST favorite quilters!
Love this concept! I used it to make a trip around the world quilt. Have not yet attempted a bargello quilt😊
So many wonderful quilts are waiting to be created!
Another favorite! I love all things mini, and these " mini" quilts are just so beautiful 😍 Thank you for another great tutorial ❤.
You are so welcome!
I really enjoy your videos, theses tiny quilts are perfect for scraps! Thanks for the tutorial, love them ☺
Glad you like them!
Love this! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. God Bless
I'm so glad you watched! You too!
So gorgeous. Thank you for your excellent instructions.
Thanks so much 😊
I love this pattern and how you pin your strips together in the beginning!! Thanks!! Congrats on the blue ribbon!!
Thank you. I sorta want to go make another one right now.
@@merrymabelmarket do it!!!! Looks like fun lol
Beautiful!
Beautiful! Thank you.
Two thread savers might work better in this situation, I think. Then you don't have to cut so close to the presser foot.
Great tutorial.
I'm pathetic. When I have two - I constantly lose one of them. In theory, I agree with you. In my own crazy reality... only one at a time really works for me.
Thank you ,God Bless ❤
Wonderful video.
Thanks for visiting
I totally agree with the judging thing 😅
Someday I will try it as I am still a beginner but these are so very cute!
You can do it!! Soon.
These are beautiful! Love all your videos! Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Cheers!
So fun! So nicely done.
stunningly fun!
Thank you!
Beautiful work ❤❤❤
Love this.....
I love this.. and thank you for validating my style of quilting..... i'm in this world to find the joy... not be judged or be judgy.... Your work is fun... would love to see you doing the FMQ as you did on this little quilt... the wavy echos!
I'll add that to the possibilities for future video's list! Thank you.
I like the quilts that are meant to be used and made from old clothes. But I also like the geometric ones on quilt book covers lol. I guess I'm trying to say it should have character, like a house should look lived in and homey, not pristine like a museum
Fun comment. Thank you!@@sarahkinsey5434
Brilliant!
I am glad you are enjoying watching.
Karen Brown over at Just Get it Done Quilts uses small squares of fabric to make bonus blocks as her thread catchers or leaders and enders
Yes, Bonnie Hunter calls those "leader/enders". Another great use for scraps!!
Damn amazing 🎉
Slap and sew. Love it! Yup, even this math brained person can do it. And that horse goes FAST!
You made me laugh!
Adorable
Thank you. And FUN!!
Thank you so much for this video and your free pattern. I am a newbie quilter. Can you use this technique for a quilt as you go? Any suggestions or video tutorial you can share would be awesome.
You are so practical and effective I love your tutorial and you help me a lot because I do donations quilts for Linus Project we are blanketed that is what they call us. But zi am happy to do my quilts but my brain some times it runs blank thank you 😮
I love that you make comfort quilts!! They lift your soul. Keep up the great work.
I’m a bright color lover at heart but I keep buying and quilting subdued colors.
What’s up with that????
I love to quilt but sometimes the big project make me stagnate.
This is just what I needed to see!!!
Thank you for helping me have an epiphany!!!!♥️👍🙏🤓🇺🇸
I sew bright for children. A lot.
Love the podcast. Very clear and informative. I’m just not sure if I understand what happened to the second set. Did you sew them to the bottom of the first set? Thanks again. I love all the quilts you made.
With this tutorial I just made the same pattern, but two different separate miniature quilts. I just did the same project in two different colorways to show it's versatility.
I happened upon your videos and I'm delighted to find them. I have so many leftover scraps of fabric that I can't bear to throw out. They are all about 2inches by 2inches. Do you think they would work to make a small quilt such as the one in your video? Thank you for sharing!
Yes, you could easily make a quilt with them. You will just have to lay them out and sew them individually instead of strip piecing!! I love saving scraps and making beauty! Best Wishes!
Wonder if you are making the two strip sets that are same for one quilt if you could do the initial pressing one in one direction and the other opposite, then combine them??? Gut feeling this would only work if they were exactly the same. Just some thoughts.
Yes - that would TOTALLY work. Smart girl.
thanks for all you lovely videos!!!!!!! Ok now I have to give this one a try!!!!
have you done a tutorial on that beautiful squiggly quilting you do?
ua-cam.com/video/oGg44IdCQYE/v-deo.html Here is a link to an OLD video that we made YEARS ago. I think you are talking about "Dwirling". If you go to the video and start watching at 16:16 you will find the dwirling instruction and then I quilt it, and you can watch that too.
Threadsaver! That's brilliant! What is the material that you press on top of?
I think you mean the cotton on my ironing big board? You can see all about it here: studio.ua-cam.com/users/videoc-JES6cVTR4/edit
Around eight minutes and fifty seconds in - I show all about my big board.
@merrymabelmarket Thank you! I am learning so.much.stuff as I watch through your videos! Hate to think about how much UA-cam time, but it has been so valuable. I started your pajama quilting videos on your website this afternoon. 😊
Wondering about finished size of quilts
It's been awhile since I made this one. I'm not sure without doing more work than I have time for. I can tell you that it is a sweet doll quilt or table top size. Just do a little math when you make your own to make it the size you want it..
WHere you have 2 strip sets, instead of using the thread saver scrap at the end of each strip sewn, I would start with it, then sew the first set, then continue onto the second set and back to the first set and not use the thread saver scrap until the very end of sewing the sets.
I would too. But sometimes, when I'm teaching, I try to simplify.
"Descending" squares? Why not "ascending" squares? Don't be afraid to be positive! ;D
Descending IS positive if you are descending into beauty my friend. (My actual friend!! Tee hee)
Beautiful!
