- I LOVE this wonky star block and have used it in many ways. I've learned to streamline the process of sewing them together. So, I thought I would share my methods with you. This is a simple way to dip your toes into "improvisational" quilting. Get out those scraps and come play with me!
No wonder you are so speedy and efficient! You are so good at streamlining all the processes. Love that baby quilt!
Thanks for showing how to streamline your quilting. I appreciate any ideas that make things easier or faster! The quilt is beautiful!
The video is a little fast for me. I saved it to watch again. Yes, those lovely stars do twinkle!
I love how you explain everything and demonstrate everything, but in a much shorter video than some others do. Beautiful quilts! Thank you xx Deb 🤗
Thank you so much!
I LOVE your tutorials videos. You have such an engaging, no-nonsense approach.
Thank you for your direct kind words.
Love your style of teaching and positive approach to quilting and life!
Love this! So cute and it looks complicated but isn't, which is my favorite pattern :)
Exactly. It LOOKS amazing...but is really simple.
Love watching and learning. You do a great job teaching.
I need a quick baby quilt. This is perfect for my current mental state. Thank you so much.
Have fun making it!!
Came out spectacular!! Particularly fond of how you colored it & the diversity of the patterns used. So well done!
Thanks so much...so easy and no worrying about matching star points! Excited to try some twinkle stars!

How fun. I like the streamlining tips too!
I love how you organized your process of making these cute stars! Thank you!
Oh my gosh, what a gorgeous quilt!!! 🪡🧵✂️💕
I love stars - I love scrappy - what a great combination - subscribing from England
Love your quilts ❤❤❤
thank you.
You make it look so easy! Thank you!
Hi,just to let you know,I've learned to talk to myself all over again (muscle learned) .Even used a few choice ones after getting started working on this quilt! Finally found it to be easy peasy and trying to make it harder than it was.I,ve truly have enjoyed making this one and look forward to getting it finished. Thank you😊
I am SO GLAD that you figured it out. It's an addicting block to make. So sweet!
Hope you intend to rediscover " Embroidery " as I would love to learn new ways to start into this again.Your an inspiration to my mind, happy!😂
I LOVE this quilt! Thank you so much for sharing how to make it!
Glad you like it!
I just found you and no wonder you're the queen of scraps. Love all your ideas.🎉
Wow, thank you! Welcome!
I really do enjoy your videos. your projects are great, and I always feel inspired!
I love making “new” blocks big the first time so I can see how it goes together
I will use them well. I like having extra blocks. I build comfort quilts with them. So making an extra block or two always seems like a good idea to me.
My husband made me a big ironing board several years ago and I love, love, love it too!
That is awesome!
Hi,just found your channel and can't wait to make twinkling star! What a brand new way to get it done and am excited to get started, feel the love❤! Thanks for sharing 😂
Welcome!! I hope you love making yours!
I really enjoy how you showed the entire process of chain sewing. I try to sew as much as I can without cutting threads and many times that means feeding through parts of the block, clipping the first sections so that I can join the last piece of the unit. Great illustration of block units stored in the small container. That makes it sew easy to sit down for 10 mins and get some sewing accomplished, even if it’s only two more blocks.
Glad it was helpful!
You are so organized and have verumy calming and soothing voice.
Thank you.
What a beauty!
Wonderful video. I'm rather new to quilting, but this is something I could do with my already abundant pile of scraps. The king quilt is absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for sharing.
You can do it!
This is a really fun pattern. I really love the one you made for your guest bedroom. It is really lovely🩷
Thank you! 😊
I love wonky stars and have used this block for many quilts. But now… this method will streamline my process. Thank you!
I love the wonky, twinkling stars. I want to use shirts to make a throw for each of my kids. I think this process would work well. I just don't know how to decide if I have enough shirts.! Thanks for all your wonderful videos.
I would just start sewing and see what happens. But I'm sort of a free spirit like that. I would use a neutral background and then the shirts would go a LONG way. I do think you will probably have plenty of fabric. I read your other e-mail to our website. I hope this answer helps you. God Bless!
@@merrymabelmarket Thank you so much for the prompt reply. It is very helpful.
What a perfect video for sewing in chain ♡
Beautiful, I’m new to quilting😮 I will give it a try. Thanks for this tutorials❤
You can do it!
❤️
I love this! I wish I was more organized!
A little container - and start cutting. You can do it!
Amazing! Today will be scrap day. Thank you.
Hey, I'm coming to visit! Love your Twinkle Star quilt design and your tutorial is awesome!
Looks fun!
Love this!
Need more videos, especially for us newbie’s. Awesomeness
Working on it! Thank you!
Wow! New to your channel and since I'm a star fan, I just love these.
Thank you ❤
Glad to have you!! Have fun making them.
I love how you chain piece and streamline this block. Now I have to decide if I should try this one or do another string block. 😊
Maybe both?
I made this star for a queen and I trimmed away all the back. I noticed you didn't and it wasn't too bulky. So much faster, no waste and more warmth by leaving it. I'm not going to trim anymore. Without it trimmed it is also easier to not get confused in the final join. Thank you for sharing this!
Yes, plus no bias edges.... Glad you enjoyed it.
Love this tutorial!!
Glad you liked it!! It is one of my favorites!
Love this! Thank you for sharing.
Simply beautiful!
That is so stinking cute. It's going on my list.
I am no beginner, but this pattern will require that I watch it's tutorial SEVERAL times over!! 😅😅😅 Maybe if I also had a written version to collaborate with your seasoned hands, I could eventually understand like you do.😊 🌟 🤩 ⭐️ 🌠
Make ONE block. Cut out the 8 background squares. The center square the color of the star. Sew the points (triangles) on the four point blocks. Lay them out and sew them together. ONCE you have made one block. I bet the rest of it will magically make sense. Best wishes to you!!
@MerryMabelMarket I sure hope so. Thx for the quick run down. You're right, if I make ONE Block, the rest should fall into place. I enjoy chain piecing whenever possible. I just bought the wonky star pattern from MSQC, so with both, I should be able to catch on. Thanks for sharing your process. I'm more inclined to coordinate colors and make it look scrappy, but follow a color scheme. I have several "Bee themed" prints in Grey's and Yellows. I'm excited to try it! ☺️ 🐝
I love this
Awesome! Love it.
I love this so much!
Love these stars
Your my favorite!!! I love this I wonder if I could use layer cakes for stars
For sure you could use layer cakes. I bet at least two blocks (if the layer cakes are the center stars).
Thank you
Love this
The beauty doesn't get old. And I own it!!
I love this! Thank you ❤️
Oh my gosh I love this video! Just found your channel. Love your way of making this video. Short and to the point. And your narrative?…I’m a new subscriber. This all made sense to me and my brain. Thank you for sharing this!!
Glad to have you! Enjoy making this block. It really is one of my favorites.
Oh how pretty, I love it too! 😅
I love it to.
Thanks a shearing very easygoing mathod😊
I love this idea! I’m just starting to learn how to quilt and I love your videos! I also love the leaf/vine ring on your right hand, it’s beautiful!
Thank you Linda. I hope you enjoy and love quilting for years to come. It's so satisfying to create!!
Love love love
Good Idea!! Ilike to User this star as enders and Leaders. Light background and and all colors for the Star ❤😊
Great Idea!!
Oh my! I’m already nervous & having palpitations- can’t wait to see all of this…😳🥵🤣😂
This is fantastic! I sew quilts for Quilts of Valor and this would make a beautiful red, white and blue quilt for a Veteran!! Thank you so much!
I SO agree. Beautiful idea!
I love the concept and finished quilt BUT...I’m confused as you go so fast 🙈😂😍
I do go fast. But because of the beauty of UA-cam... you can do it. Cut out a center (2.5 inches), and then cut the backgrounds (8 - 2.5 inch blocks). Follow along with the sewing process ONE step at a time. (Hit the pause button.) Pretty soon you will have a block and will know how fun this block is!
Christina I had to pause it too! Love her technique!
So nice thankyou
I need measurements! The blocks look like five inch squares, but how wide and how long are the strips of star fabric?
To make the 9 patch.... you need 2.5 inch squares. The center square is of course the star color.
As for the strips to sew into points? Just use scraps. FOR SURE a 2.5 inch strip would work. One strip will make at least two. (Depends on how you sew or conserve fabric.)
Have fun!!
Wow i like this. How many blocks did you need to make that lovely King size quilt?
I can't remember right now. I think it says on the video. Just make graph with math of the size you want and you will be set.
You don’t trim off the excess under the star sections?? Like your quilt you made from this wonky star pattern. Enjoy! Lou
Because I machine quilt - the layers don't bother me. Having an unknown bias edge does bother me. So, I choose not to trim and I keep the whole block to stabilize them. They piece together really well this way.
love your wonky star block, would like to give it a try for a 3 1/2" block, could you tell me the width of your fabric for the star points, or how you figure out the width for any given size block, thank you
The only measurements needed are the size of the 9 unit blocks to make the bigger finished block. Otherwise just use scraps. If you want to cut strips to use, cut them the same width as your individual units blocks, and there will be plenty of fabric. Try just one, and you will be able to see.
@@merrymabelmarket I will give this a go
👏👏👏🌷
Do you not trim away the excess fabric from the 2.5 inch squares once the star points are sewed on. I did a practice block and I’m not sure I like that extra thickness or in the scheme of things it doesn’t matter. It’s a cute block but I must admit it’s out of my comfort zone so I’m thinking before I tackle a quilt I would try a wall hanging. I’m intrigued by the process
I have trimmed away the extra fabric after trimming in my past. However, I no longer do that. I feel like it stabilizes the block to keep the original square on. (No bias.) So - I never trim them now.
It might be a problem (the thickness) if you are handquilting. Machine quilting it will zoom right over it.
@@merrymabelmarket thank you for responding. I’ll do that with not trimming the excess. Star blocks is something i love but the traditional way I had problems with. I would just love to make it into a king size for my bed. Thanks for sharing!
I see you aren't cutting out the bulk. So I couldn't do system. I like the block though.
You can cut out the bulk if you want to. I just find that leaving it helps with all the bias in the block. Cutting it off and then squaring it up works great too if that is what you prefer to do.
🤯🤯🤯
Do u use steam in your iron ❤️
No. I prefer not to.
I’m a beginner and this was very difficult for me to follow because you went so fast through the process
Pause the video between each step. Make the block and you should understand. You can also slow down the video and watch it slower if that would help you. Best Wishes!
What is the starting block size on the blue star quilt. Nice tutorial and a really pretty quilt.
I'm not sure of your question. The big blocks I showed at first were all cut 4 inches. Making a start block that is 10.5 unfinished.
The bedspread and baby quilt have blocks cut at 2.5 inches.... making a 6.5 unfinished start block.
You can make any sized 9 patch and this pattern will work for you.
@@merrymabelmarket I have some 4 1/2" blocks already cut from a previous project. Can I use them instead of the 4"?
@@colleenbaker2310 ABSOLUTELY!!
Why don’t you cut excess behind to remove bulk?
You can. I choose not to because it is going to be quilted with a quilt machine which has no problem going through the layers. Plus, because it isn't on straight of grain, it makes a more stable "block" to piece with. It's just a preference. It isn't wrong to remove the bulk, so whatever is preferred by the quilter will work.
What sewing machine is that please 😊
It is a "Limited Edition Project Runway" BROTHER that I bought a few years ago.
This is so clever!! I just got done making star blocks with 2 1/2" HST. This would have been much more fun :) Another question...I have a new Brother BQ3100 (love it!) and I have the presser foot you're using but I can't seem to get my 1/4" right. I've tried pausing your video to see where you line your fabric up with the presser foot but I just can't get it focused right. Can you tell me (show me) where you have your fabric for your 1/4"?? Thanks :)
This foot was hard to find the 1/4 inch on. You have to practice (get two 2.5 inch blocks and sew until they are EXACTLY 4.5 inches when sewn together and pressed. Then, try two 1.5 inch squares and try to get them to come out to exactly 2.5 inches.
I can't post a picture here. It's just to the right of the metal part of the foot. Scantly.
The best thing to do is to practice it with your presser foot until you hit it spot on! And then....go with the flow of that. I hope this helps!!
@@merrymabelmarket Thanks :) I gave up with this foot and now use a foot with a seam guide for 1/4".
Looks like you can just make flying geese units
Wonky ones.
Great video! I love the organization ideas and will have to incorporate that into my future quilting projects. As always, looking forward to your next videos!😊
I love that you show how you streamlined it too! Awesome pattern and this will be a great scrap buster for sure
Beautiful ❤️❤️
Hello again my friend! You very kindly answered me back and told me to simply attempt one block. I just finished it, and you were absolutely right! I did have to watch your video three or four times stopping and starting taking screenshots taking notes, as I had mentioned before my ADHD brain was all over the place as was your video! Lol! But I wish I could show you a photo of my finished square because I love it! Thank you so much for the encouragement!
Glad you were able to figure it out!! Good job! You can send the picture to Fun@Merrymabelmarket.com and we will admire your work!
Thank you for this! You are so easy to listen to and learn from! Can’t wait to make this!
LOL wish you can sew that fast
😭😭 I really wanted to learn how to do this however my ADHD brain just dead stopped when you stopped showing me step by step how to put it together in a linear non-stop fashion. You went from almost making that first block to the next quilt and I'm still stuck wondering how the heck it all comes together! I know it's just me! But I really wanted to learn how to make this 😭. I know it's been a while since you posted this video but is there any chance that you made another one with simple steps like 1 through 15 without any breaks to explain or to start something new? It's ridiculously adorable! I love it!
My best suggestion is for you to make ONE block. Follow the directions by actually DOING it to make ONE block. Then, as you do that - I think it will become obvious to you as you actually do it. The directions really are all there. Just make it one step at a time and the confusion will leave you.
BEST WISHES!!!
I should have said and I "believe" that the confusion will leave you. Remember it is a simple nine patch. With wonky triangles. You can do it!!
Wonderful!!!
This is beautiful, thanks for the demonstration. What colours are the background fabrics in the large quilt? Thank you Merry🌷
A large selection of low volume pieces.
Awesome!👍
PLEASE SHARE what kind of rotary cutter you're using. My hands are so messed up with arthritis at this point... I might enjoy using something different.
Watch the video we put out last Monday titled: Top Ten Tools for My best Quilting LIfe. I show all about it.
I love LOVE this pattern!❤ However, as an oldster newbie your instructions were way too fast and over my head…..so sad….
Many beginners have made this block. If you just make ONE block and try.... stopping the video when you need to do each step, you will be able to figure it out. Making it with me will help you get it. I really think you can do it!! Sending happy thoughts your way.
i like this very much and i find even after watching it several times, it's way too fast. every time i watch i grasp a bit more but i really wish it wasnt so speedy cuz i want to make.
My advice is to try to make ONE block. As you do that - you will be able to figure it out. You can pause the video as you go. Best Wishes!!
Thankyou. You explain this well.
Glad it was helpful!
