Well, if you wanted to fight a Defender with a Panda, you should have used the Panda 4X4 1st gen. It was a real compact off-road, undestructible and reliable. If someone says that Fiats are unreliable, that's because he never had one.

    • @ivanvisanich
      @ivanvisanich 6 років тому +33

Some Fiat's were terribly unreliable and rusted from day 1 . Once i was in Sicily and rented a second generation Panda and i immediately fell in love with one . Some 3 years ago i bought a second hand one which i sold a year later as i then got a company car . Fast forward to last June , had to change job , had no company car any more and bought another Panda . Both have been extremely reliable and the most great thing in all is that it's extremely fun to drive .

We have one of these little gems (same colour) as we live in the high hills where snow is a common occurrence in winter. We've had it for a few years now, completely reliable, a lot of fun to drive, and in snow, completely competent. One thing not mentioned is the ride, it would shame much larger cars, it soaks up lumps and bumps. I would say though that sourcing the unique tyres is a little tricky and you do have to order them on the internet as most tyre places don't stock them. Other than that, it's a brilliant car, bags of character, very good equipment, and it really can go anywhere.

I super fuoristrada li lasciavano a casa.

We’ve had Landrovers for 10 years in our family and love them, but the Fiat did incredibly well! Low weight is definitely a bonus when offroading. It should be mentioned, that most defenders are modified and fitted with full locks all around if they go offroading frequently. The car in the video lacked these as could be seen by the two (or one?) tire fire, and this makes all the difference. Still, it’s great to see that big things also come in small packages. Both cars have their benefits, and unlike 90% of “suv’s” these days, the fiat proves some of them are actually off road worthy - even bone stock! Good job fiat!

the panda did really well and i was impressed with its performance. that said, i am a defender 110 owner and have done a lot of off roading. i was very surprised to see the landie stuck there as i have been through much worse, as have most off roaders. the tyre types / pressures may have been an issue, or it may simply have been too little momentum approaching the boggy bit.
i certainly wouldnt judge either vehicles relative performance from that snippet of film, other than as i said being pleasantly surprised with the panda, but also bare in mind the landie is designed to hoof round heavy loads in those conditions all day, every day... stuff the panda simply couldnt do.
there is a very good reason why the defender design dates back to 1948, it works and its simple to modify and work on... two issues that pose a problem for a car mfr looking to sell replacement vehicles every few years.

So the defender gets stuck in the mud okay we can all see that. But the mud is near the centre of the hubs on the defender yet the mud the panda went through was just touching the bottom of the rim so not overly fair. Secondly they are using a much older generation defender without the traction control which acts as a locked differential. Thirdly the guy driving the defender trains people off-road? Well he clearly doesn't teach ground reading skills because he clearly put the defender in more difficult situations. If you want to see which one is best tie them together and see which one pulls the other one through the slippery stuff.

agree, the " off road " instructor doesnt impress in this at all. i guess the vast majority of his work comes from people who have never been off road and need a bit of a confidence boost and the basics of the hi / lo box and diff lock.
if you want to avoid the wheel spin, in an older land rover without traction control, before you get bogged down, low range first or second, depending on incline, very light pressure on the brake whilst still maintaining forward momentum (ie foot on gas and lightly brake together) stops the slipping wheel from stealing all the power.
it does take a bit of practice to get it right, but there isnt much that it wont get through, even on the standard tyres.
If you want better still, adjust the tyre pressures to the conditions and choose more suitable A/T or mud terrain tyres

Hmm! ; ( at 4:52 it is easy to make out that the defender is moving over a much deeper slush, whereas the panda is moving over something which can be tackled easily by any 4x4 ! I'm saying this since I'm both a car enthusiast and an offroad driver ! I originate from the himalayas in a small himalayan town named darjeeling ,which was a colony of britishers during colonisation ! After the colonials gave up rulling ,still many britishers lived here as they owned many tea plantations and many of them even imported land rover series 3 and defenders in india ! Right now my uncle owns one of it ! and I own a land cruiser 70 series and a dodge viper ACR here in gothenberg sweden ! From my experience that only old school 4x4s with front and rear solid axles are considered to be the best ! And no way the panda can beat that big tough guy in offroad business since the land rover defender has more low end torque and a balanced weight so that it can get grip plus it can even sail over soft soil ! I had to spit out this comment because even as a car guy , I fell really sad that many old school offroaders are getting expired and are being replaced by crap crossovers ! So let us car guys unite with offroad enthusiast so that we can fight against crossover owners ! Since car guys hate crossovers ! Even many cool cars like the eclipse are now in the form opf a crossover ! And the original jeep cherokee Xj which was a real crossover back then during the 85s are now turning out to be crap crossovers ! Please support and forgive me about my english ! I can only speak in swedish ,currently !

These roads are very smooth and well prepared.
In the real world off roading, you can found deep grooves when the Panda hit the ground, when a veichle with higher clearance from ground can proceed correctly.
The Panda front bumper is very fragile, in this well prepared track, it never touch the ground.

Lets pit a new Panda with all the electronic gizmo's anyone could ask for against a good old work dog that can tow well in excess of 3.5t all day long and still do well in off-road conditions with out any electronic aid. For the boggy section, the Panda attacks it with way more speed where as the Defender goes in, not looking like its in low range and gets stuck. Surprise? I think not...

If I was only to use the Defender for off-roading, definitely. But the point of the small Fiat is its extreme versatility. It is not much of an off-road car but rather a city car with off-road capability. It is a car that you would use to go shopping, for daily commuting and you would be able to take it into nature during the weekend. Panda may even be better for casual off-road, but I would not take it to a journey across Africa. Because what it lacks in mechanics, it supplies with electronics, making it hard to repair in case of malfunction, while Defender you can repair with a wrench and a hammer. Also, thanks to the electronics, you are never fully in control of the vehicle. Defender is a car for exotic extreme conditions far away from civilization, it is simple and extremely sturdy, Panda is a car for Italian mountains. A rough terrain, but not far from civilization. Most of the ordinary people will never make use of a car like Defender.

I own 3 4x4:s , -79 Blazer, -94 Grand Cherokee and -07 H 3 . If just going to the worst possible terrain, Blazer with it's modifications has pulled Land Rovers to safety, it just beats them hands down. Grand Cherokee is the Winter King with it's Subaru'ish handling. The Hummer is "too new" to risk too much, but it is in reality possibly the best 4x4 there is. I have been offroading for 30 years now, and here in Finland, you need something that gets you out of the woods, Toyota would be the most reliable, but having participated to numerous "safaris", I'm sorry to say that Land Rovers and Range Rovers are just too brittle and unreliable. We used to say that you can spot one of their owners by looking for a man that walks in the woods, and possibly has a borrowed drive axle part on his shoulder... So The older test, Panda would have won without the obvious intentional drivers error. Now the Panda just "won". The terrain was this time chosen to favor the panda, and if arranged differently, LR would have won easily towing the remains of that Italian toy to the wrecking yard. I too miss Top Gear...
