No, they just chose what was better to use at the time, today VFX/CGI studios are perfectly capable of recreating a realistic looking highway environment.
Matrix 2 was like pure magic to me with my Kid eyes ! the Virus smith fight was impressive, the car chase blew my mind away back in the days ! i watch the thing yesterday and it was still Sexy to look !
It was Debbie Evans ua-cam.com/video/UWy1zh4x7oo/v-deo.html No idea why they made out Carrie Ann did it all unless they were getting sued for the accident.
Some of it was built, a lot of the highway scenes were filmed in Alameda and Oakland, CA. My dad works for Caltrans and was part of the crew that helped shut down the highway from the public.
This scene is most adrenaline rushing scene EVER ....for full 15 minutes (even more), starting from when Neo fights off all those bad ass, martial artists goons of Merovingian till he saves Morpheus and the keymaker, I literally (still) have the same expression which Link had when Neo (at exact moment) picks up Morpheus and the keymaker, each time I rewatch it. Actually the whole second movie is this EPIC scene.
fucking loved that climax!! Cinematographic orgasm the build up was on par - the way you could see first person the landscape rushing from Neo's eyes and then him catching both of them mid-explosion!!! You can't go more epic than that in a movie! You simply can't... Oh wait, there's also the bullet dodge scene in the 1st one ;) - true trend-setters...
***** haha, I get what you're saying... :))) I watched Transformers 1 - didn't understand anything from their fights - with all the mini debris and twirling metals....
Amazing movie, amazing crew with amazing actors. This is why the Matrix Trilogy will alwys be one of the greatest action/scifi films of all time. I thinks its been 20years now and its still badass!
i still have a special place in my heart for this movie just for this car chase scene. when all my friends were talking about how it wasn't good, i would always start raving about how awesome the car chase scene was lol. that gave the movie a pass for me
She didn't - a stunt rider called Debbie Evans did the dangerous riding, the rest was CGI and Carrie-Anne Moss posing, lol. It even explains this in one of the 'extras' videos in the DVD package. Fifth Gear have got this completely wrong!
@@SPM1966SPM she might not have been the one riding in all of the shots, but I guarantee you she drove that bike with that guy on the back. keanu and carrie ann even mention this scene and what she did in a recent interview.

Bullets raining on the Cadillac, sudden music shift at @ The black Ford Tauras hitting the barricade and doing the mid air turn in such a tight spot, stole my heart forever.. creative film making and attention to detail at its finest!
The whole Matrix was a moment in history. I'm nervous and excited about Part 4 but I think if done right, there's no reason the franchise can't be like the James Bond franchise, upping the ante on what, in particular, practical effects can achieve in depicting a post-apocalyptic, digital dystopia where everything is possible.
reloaded and Revolutions were filmed simultaneously. The highway scene was done in in a unique and completely original way. There are really great behind the scenes of that scene specifically.
My parents only know 3 movies Really , the Matrix Trilogy because they just don’t like movies or watching TV overall however they couldn’t pass on the Matrix films . I remember when Matrix Reloaded came out , my dad requested a sick day off and took my mom and I to the nearest Regal theatre to see it . Till this day they are still talking about it 😁
The end of the whole chase with the two agents ramming each other's truck, all that its for sure a terminator homage! The music, the truck itself, even the agent with the back glasses, anyone else thinks that!?
I'm sure there's tons of little homages, if you listen to the Wachowskis talk they're intense film buffs! I'm pretty sure the "turn right... now!" line at the beginning of the chase, plus a lot of sets and lighting in the first 2 movies, was inspired by John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China.
Wow respect to Carrie Anne Moss . Never knew she did the bike stunts. Well more difficult and dangerous than cars . And no helmet 😕 how was that even allowed. Thank goodness nothing happened
+Rudolf Menon No, but she did as much as she was allowed to do. They often don't even allow the actors to do stunts that are too dangerous, especially if they are not an experienced biker.
She did a lot of the bike riding herself, but some shots she had her double doing it for trickier stuff. It's a lie to say she did "nothing" in the traffic shots. You misinterpreted and misremembered what you saw on the dvd extras. I've seen the same behind the scenes videos. She did some of it, but not all, like usual with a stunt double.
Carrie-Anne Moss did not ride the bike for the stunts. She rode a trailer rig for few close-ups and a real bike for the low speed pick-ups etc. But the stunt driver on the bike was Debby Evans.
While Debbie Evans did the crazy stuff like weaving through traffic, Carrie-Anne rode the motorcycle without the rig, no helmet and a passenger in several of the shots. They talked about this in recent interviews.
Fifth Gear have got this completely wrong - a stunt rider called Debbie Evans did the dangerous riding, the rest was CGI and Carrie-Anne Moss posing, lol. It even explains this in one of the 'extras' videos in the DVD package.
One of the only redeeming qualities of the movie was indeed the car chase. Until now, I always wondered why there were only American cars in this scene, no foreign cars whatsoever.
I still remember seeing reloaded opening night, it was so much fun to see in the theater everyone was just like OHHH SHIT!! And cheering, wonderful action movie.
Mostly ten lane or 15 lane highways with heights above 10 meters are the intercontinental highways for road traffic to sustain and underway for shades of rest and pullover areas.
And this is why practical effects are awesome.
Nothing *practical* about this ;)
Yeah compare this to the Highway of Deadpool !
Absolutely nothing practical about it!

My mind is still blown that Carrie Ann Moss drove the Ducati onto incoming traffic without a helmet... while doing those maneuvers. Fucking crazy.
It was Debbie Evans ua-cam.com/video/UWy1zh4x7oo/v-deo.html
No idea why they made out Carrie Ann did it all unless they were getting sued for the accident.
She did some of it for real, but about 70+ percent was a stunt double. Still- extremely impressive
So the highway was real, no wonder the movie is so expensive!
Isaac Cheong not only real. But made for just the movie. Wasn’t even one that was being used by everyday traffic.
expansive and impresive, you can fell the action
Some of it was built, a lot of the highway scenes were filmed in Alameda and Oakland, CA. My dad works for Caltrans and was part of the crew that helped shut down the highway from the public.
It was the same location that The Mythbusters used for all their vehicle tests. The Alameda Runway in San Fran.

Matrix was really ahead of his time, can't believe it was released almost 20 years ago.
well some cars are made from plastic alloy so it might be possible that an agent can topple an car upon landing on it like that..
That time in 2000s, for me The Matrix is the most awesome movie I've ever seen.. and Linkin Park is the best band ever..

Carrie Anne Moss did not do the traffic dodging shots. She had a stunt double. Check the old dvd extras.
+Rudolf Menon No, but she did as much as she was allowed to do. They often don't even allow the actors to do stunts that are too dangerous, especially if they are not an experienced biker.
Yeah because they're expensive. If an actor gets seriously injured during a shoot, the whole project gets stalled.
She did a lot of the bike riding herself, but some shots she had her double doing it for trickier stuff. It's a lie to say she did "nothing" in the traffic shots. Carrie-Anne Moss did not ride the bike for the stunts. She rode a trailer rig for few close-ups and a real bike for the low speed pick-ups etc. But the stunt driver on the bike was Debby Evans.
