    The temp in Tulsa was 107 today. It's been like this for a month, and the weatherman says it'll be like this for another month. I know weather isn't climate, however, I've lived 60 years on the same property I was born on, and I've seen the changes. My pond never freezes in Winter any more, and my pine trees are dying. It may already be too late.

    As a kid in Kansas in the late 60's and early 70's, I remember leaving the house and riding our bikes for miles in the summer. We wouldn't go home until dark. The hottest days were in the low 90's. Rarely did it hit over 100. Now, from Late June to Early August, ALL of the highs are in the triple digits. My grandkids can't stay out more than an hour before they're nearly cooked.

      @@uberneanderthal When it snows in April in Mexico, you don't think that's extremely odd?
      It is global, numbnuts. Did I say it's only hotter in KS? Greenland is melting at the rate of 2.5 million Olympic pools a day. Ice in Greenland isn't supposed to melt at all. The North pole has had several days ABOVE freezing.
      We've f*(ked up the climate so bad, that the jet stream has shifted. That's how warm air is reaching so far into the arctic in the summer, and the cold air is forced down in the winter. Seasons are caused by the angle of the sun, but the extremes are caused by f'd up weather patterns. Remember the arctic freezes in the midwest last winter? In areas that almost never dropped below zero we're seeing - 20deg lows. Now heat domes in the summer are 20deg above normal.
      It's too late to do anything to change it now. The damage is done. I'm old. It's y'all that are going to suffer.

    Through June 20, 2022, the Greenland Ice Sheet had the lowest spring surface melt in the past decade. The total aerial extent of surface melting was just over 2.27 million square kilometers (876,000 million square miles), well below the 1981 to 2010 average of 3.72 million square kilometers (1.44 million square miles). Melting was below average along the western edge of the ice sheet (10 to 15 days behind the average rate) and near-average along the southeastern coast where melting occurred primarily at low elevations. A small area of the southern tip of the island had slightly above average melting.

    What’s scary about the arctic is the ‘latent heat of fusion of ice’, which is just that right now, all the heat goes into melting the ice so we don’t feel it. Once it is gone, the world will lose its AC. And without a substantial gradient between the poles and equator, global circulatory flows like the jet stream slow down messing up seasonal temperate weather in fundamental ways.

    • @freedommatters2900
      @freedommatters2900 Рік тому +3

      Sorry, but it’s not that simple. Congress had illegally given the EPA free reign to create and enforce their own policies and regulations, which overstepped existing laws. In effect, the EPA was creating their own laws. In the United States, only Congress can create Federal laws. Congress was abdicating their responsibility and illegally assigning it the EPA, with little to no oversight. That is unconstitutional - so SCOTUS ruled as such, and stopped it from continuing. For almost 250 years, the structure of our government and following the rule of law have not only functioned as designed, but have proven to be the greatest system of its kind ever undertaken. They are important parts of the foundation of our country, and we have to protect them. By the way, in 2022, a supposed independent begging people to vote Democratic is highly suspect, and quite frankly not believable.

    The really sad thing about events like these is that they in themselves cause even more melting events. The stable ice sheet is white. Therefore it reflects sunlight away from itself. The pools of water are darker, which means that they absorb more sunlight from the sun. Therefore the warmer pools of water cause even more melting. For those that don't know, this is called a positive feedback loop. There are many such positive feedback loops now happening. Extreme heat causing forest fires. That puts more CO2 into the air which leads to an even warmer atmosphere. Thereby causing even more forest fires. There are many of these things that are going on that are not reported in the mass media. Things like the oceans acting as buffers by absorbing heat. But now the oceans have passed the level where they can absorb excess heat. This does two things. One is that the oceans are now becoming a source of heat. The other is that the excess heat that was being absorbed by the oceans is now going straight to the atmosphere. And that is increasing the rate at which the planet is warming. And oh yeah the methane positive feedback loop. This caught the climatologists off guard. They had not predicted for this. So when they realized this was happening about ten years ago they collectively went , "Oh Shit." As the temperatures have increased the permafrost has started to melt. The melting permafrost is now releasing huge amounts of methane. And methane retains about ten times the heat that CO2 does. The scientists have been warning us about this for over fifty years now. But the industrialists, wonderful people that they are, have ignored them. And even worse have been running a full blown campaign to lull us into complacency. Guess who won? So now it is no longer about preventing Climate Change. Now it is a matter of surviving it. If you have not considered how you are going to do that I would STRONGLY recommend that you start to think about it. NOW.

      I've been saying the following for about two years now. Everyone ignores me or calls me a crackpot (not that it really matters, anymore) :
      I'm convinced climate change has reached a point of no return. Which, assuming I'm right, you're not likely to hear about any time soon. What are they gonna say? "We tried to warn you, but it's too late now... smoke em if ya got em .."? - But, I've only got a 7th grade education, so what do I know? - other than;
      There are two long standing problems with doing something about climate change.
      1) the longer we wait to enact meaningful and effective changes the more drastic and potentially economically disruptive those changes have to be - which creates more pressure from opposition and science deniers.
      2) There looms various 'tipping points' where Mother Nature takes over and starts expelling gases in a self-perpetuating cycle that humans can't do anything about
      I'm fairly certain we've already reached a 'tipping point' of no return. The permafrost is melting at rates 70 years ahead of projections (per CCAG). The pools that are forming are not refreezing. They retain more solar heat; expanding and multiplying; and expelling more gases. As more CO2 and, at least 10x's worse (as a 'greenhouse gas'), methane are released - temps will rise. At a certain temperature and saturation the oceans will begin releasing trapped CO2 as well. From what I've been seeing the past year or so we have lost the ability to mitigate the problem.
      A third issue has been that even those who believe in and care about global warming, including myself, do little more than pay lip service and make concerned faces IF the subject comes up. I'll be dead within 20 years or so anyway and have no children or family to worry about - those that do seem oddly indifferent for an animal capable of blushing ...

I have a bachelor degree in environmental science. Glad to know that some people are extremely intelligent and knowledgeable about the situation. I have noticed that the more ice that melts in the south pole the hotter it has been here in Colombia. Unfortunately, many people place the economy over the environment. One day the implications of their actions will be realized when the climate crisis drastically impacts the economy. I wrote a persuasive essay about that exact topic. I'm in the UK in my 60's. When I was a child, every winter, there'd be several weeks of snow. Summers were about 22C, anything over 25 was very hot, and 30C unheard of. Now there is a generation of children in large parts of the UK who've never seen snow last more than a couple or three days. Some winters, there's almost no snow at all. Summer temperatures up near 30C are getting common. The short heatwave we've just had , with temperatures reaching 40C in some places, is something I'd never have imagined was possible, in the Uk, as a young adult.
      The frustrating things is that I was in my 20's when I first heard that scientists were getting concerned about the potential for rapid, human-induced climate change. And what did our politicians have to say about it? If you imagine they said "Heck, we'd best take some serious action to cut our production of greenhouse gases" you're wrong. Instead we had some idiot (I forget who) saying that it'd be nice for it to be a few degrees warmer hear. Absolutely no understanding of the realities, nor any interest in educating himself in the matter. Wilful ignorance, pure and simple, because doing somethng about it probably wouldnt get him any votes. We very much need an end to short-termism in politics, and fr government to focus on the well-being of the populace first and foremost, and businesses a distant second, rather than the other way around.. Interestingly the experts told us that we needed to do the same thing then that they are telling us to do now with slightly increased temperatures. This is all natural. Weather and climate which are two different things, are driven by solar and geological events. We have to remember that the Arctic was once a tropical forest and the Sahara was once a sea. Weather and climate are driven by shoulder and geological events. Science has proven that time after time.

    This should fucking terrify people. The heat wave, the glacial melt, the fires literally around the planet, it's spiraling downhill fast.
    Glaciers melting raises ocean levels, 13% of the US is 1 foot or less above sea level, and 75% of that is HIGHLY populated. What happens when the sea pushes these people out of their homes? They move to other areas, causing population explosions, driving up housing prices even worse than they already are. We are talking 200k homes going up to 500k homes literally overnight.
    Constant heat waves, causing dry conditions, causing forest fires, which kills the plantlife required to clean the air, which is just going to cause further increases in heat, the cause further forest fires, which kills more plant life that is responsible for cleaning the air. Anyone understanding what I am getting to?
    Lets keep going!
    The more CO2 in the air, the worse the air pollution is, the hotter the weather gets, the more the glaciers melt, the faster and higher the ocean levels rise, the more people that are displaced, the higher housing prices get. But how about when the ocean starts flooding farmland? Oh, here is the fun part! The more farmland is flooded, the less food is available, the more people go hungry, the more people get desparate, the more people that are willing to break the law, oops, complete social breakdown. Enter, MADMAX WORLD!
    Yeah, this shit isn't conjecture. This shit isn't fake news. This planet is about to be completely fucked because less than a hundred assholes worldwide can't think of anything but filling their pockets with as much money as possible. And yes, it is literally less than 100 people worldwide stopping the world from taking the climate crisis seriously.

      "Climate change" is a recycled nature movement from the 60's. Climate activists will always object to nuclear power because it reminds them too much of coal-run factories and the smog that pours out from their smokestacks. Their objection is visual and emotional, not evidence-based.

    We've been warned about this for decades and the responses have ranged from "Meh" to "It's a hoax!" I don't wanna hear "Why didn't they warn us?" from people getting flooded out in future as sea levels rise, I don't wanna hear "But muh carbon offsets!!!" from CEOs and governments beholden to them. We, the little people, have done what we can, have often tried to do more and get told we haven't done enough, while companies go on about their daily and little changed business of raking in the money before the money becomes worthless. It's not the money that's worthless - it's the people.

    The saddest part of all this, is the fact that the largest impediment to reducing carbon emissions, is that most people think it would be costly and job killing. In fact, the exact opposite is true. Revenue-neutral carbon-taxing would create the greatest economic boom in world history. Even if climate wasn't a problem, it would be stupid to not do it as quickly as possible.

      I agree. Here's the problem I recognize: People in the oil/coal business, they're in their 70s - they can't conceive of any other way. They're too old, and the infrastructure they've gotten their millions and millions $ from can't be replaced before they are. Their kids inheriting the business don't want to change because the government subsidies and the no-tax clauses will keep them rich until they're dead, so climate change disasters can be left to their kids, because seriously, they already got theirs. It's the 20 somethings (I hope that's the correct ridiculous pronoun) who are going to be the innovators to create and discover solutions and create jobs that will help them through the baby-boomer created dystopia.
      Face it: if you're under 40, you're f***ed.

    Just recreate what happened 2.6 million years ago.
    A geologic uplift forced the closure of Arctic Ocean gateways, like the Bering Strait, and thermally isolated the region. That restricted the Arctic’s circulation, causing a build-up of fresh water and conditions favorable for major ice sheets to form. From that point, there was runaway cooling as ice sheets grew as far south as present-day St. Louis and New York City. The most current cycle of ice ages began.

    In the following April, Winthrop said the people who had moved into Connecticut had lost most of their cattle and were in “great straits for want of provisions.”
    June of 1637 was so hot that newcomers died of the heat, and Winthrop was forced to travel at night.
    This hot summer was followed by the very hard winter of 1637-1638, in which the snow lay up to three feet deep from mid-November until early April. In January, the bay was frozen except for a small channel. Winthrop wrote to his son that in Connecticut “they were shutt up with snowe above a month since: and we at Boston were almost readye to breake up for want of wood.”
    The spring of 1638 was so cold that the seed rotted in the ground and had to be replanted several times, but then a warm season provided a good harvest
