  • Thwaites Glacier is an unusually broad and vast glacier. Known as the 'Doomsday Glacier,' scientists say it is rapidly melting. Sridhar Anandakrishnan is a glaciologist and professor at Penn State University. He explains the danger of global warming's effect on Thwaites Glacier, with the increased melting from the glacier causing sea level rise across the globe.

    The transition to renewable energy is a good start, however, governments also need to assist in changing forestry and agricultural practices to pull carbon out of the atmosphere and keep it in the soil through chemical-free no till practices. Tilling soils allows carbon to readily reenter the atmosphere. There are also efforts around the world to capture and slow down the runoff of rain. These efforts help retain moisture in the surrounding soils and help green these arid soils. Most of these efforts by farmers and greening arid lands are being done by individual groups with little to no help from governments. It’s time governments and concerned people help finance these efforts. They are as important as the transition away from fossil fuels.

    • @wordzmyth
      @wordzmyth 23 дні тому

      Yes it is. Melting backwards from the ocean, but also water running underneath, between the glacier and the continental rock causing it to melt quicker. They do ice cores and drilling and sample the water for salinity to measure it. There are a lot of scientists down there.

    • @dragonzlyric

      There is also an added worry that a colossal chunk of the Thwaites Glacier will slip into the ocean and will speed up the melting process even more.

    • @jackred2362
      @jackred2362 3 дні тому

      The ice just needs to enter the water. If you add an icecube to your glass of water, the water will rise. What is worrying is the melting of the Thwaites Ice Shelf, which acts like a dam, holding back the rest of the Glacier that is on land from entering the sea.

    I've been watching Antarctica on Google Earth for a few years now. The ice is melting faster because it is melting away from both sides. The ice used to be white but now it's covered by soot and pollution, turning it black, attracting more heat. The sea level is already swallowing islands. People who contribute the least to global warming are suffering the most. There are 57 underground bases in Antarctica and several mobile research labs. They are not supposed to harm Antarctica but they are harming everything. There are refineries and war games with nuclear submarines under the ice. The geology teams are extracting resources as fast as they can. Russia was the last country to join last year. Now they are now landing 747's on the island. I remember back in the 70's and 80's, the research ships had to break through the ice to get to the Poles and the snow and ice had white ice year-round. Now the ice is melting so fast we can see the ground. It looks like there's ice from far away, but when you zoom in, you see there's no ice in places that should be covered in ice. Iceland is losing 13% or 6.8 million kilometers of ice per decade and it is excellerating every year. I don't know what we can do to slow it down, because we have ignored the dangers of fossil fuels in exchange for profits for so long, it's probably too late already. There's no way to slow it down now.
