  • Hey Plant lovers,
In this video we are going to talk all about Calatheas and the love and hate relationships we have with them. For most of us who’s experienced Calatheas, we know how difficult and fussy these beautiful houseplants are. They require a warm and humid environment and are very high maintenance. When it comes to caring for these houseplants, we can them the right lighting, watering and temperature they need inside our home. The humidity is the tricky part, especially if you don’t live in a warm and humid environment, so you’ll need a great humidifier to increase the humidity levels inside your home so that these beautiful houseplants can thrive and stay alive.

Calatheas are perfect beginner plants as they will tell you what you are doing wrong.
If you want to learn how to take care of houseplants, learn Calatheas first and the rest will be easy.
Calatheas are self-repairing. If you get an ugly leaf, simply snip it off and the plant will grow a new one.
If you get damage on a cactus, succulent, Sansevieria, Ficus Lyrata etc it is not so easy to repair.
Also, you don't need to worry about the plant climbing out of the pot and needing support sticks.
You do need to check them often - I check mine every day.
Christian, I urge you to make a new video and show all the signs Calatheas send.
Help Calatheas get the right treatment they deserve.
Put a Calathea in direct sunlight and it will curl its leaves in a matter of minutes.
Expose a Calathea with maroon undersides for too much light and the maroon colour will fade.
Give a Calathea hard (high calcium content) tap water and you can see the calcium as white specks on the leaves.
Allow it to dry out and it will wilt dramatically. Give it water again and tie it up to see it recover.
Expect to get a few ugly leaves as the plant acclimates.
If you get a bad leaf while doing light, humidity, water and temperature correctly, then it must be the soil.
I have had great success with replacing the nursery soil sooner than later.

I have all of my calatheas is self watering pots with wicks and they love it. They drink what they need from a light airy potting mix that remains constantly damp, not wet.
The potting mix I use is 50% potting compost or coir with some worm castings thrown in and 50% pumice of perlite. I feed them every time I top up the reservoir with liqui dirt. I have a humidifier but only use it when the humidity drops below 50%. You get fewer problems with humidity if you get the watering right.
My plants are all happy, healthy and growing like crazy. I am in the UK.

I can't imagine to live in a place where the humidity only 20-25%. I live in Indonesia where the humidity is around 80-90% everyday. In few days of the year, it reaches 60% and I feel like my skin is drying up.
I just bought Calathea Ornata today and search for how to taking care of it, so thanks for the video! If humidity is its biggest struggle, I hope mine won't have that kind of problem.

  • @carrielange2692
    @carrielange2692 3 роки тому +8

well, we are all "good" with different types of plants, having nothing to do with our skill level but just the location we live in. calathea and all prayer plants just naturally do great in my home, since my humidity is always 50 - 60% just naturally. i don't have to do anything, it's just there. you might think i have a green thumb...except plants that require a lot of bright light die, die, die here because the sun just doesn't shine, haha. just add aquarium water conditioner to your plant water. cheap, easy way to eliminate chlorine and heavy metals... i don't know why people don't know about this. Assuming most plant people aren't fish people too.

Because of all these videos, I start to get really anxious about my Calatheas hahaha (I got like 6 as a beginner, without any knowledge about them just because I liked the look). Sure, some have a tiny bit of a brown tip but it doesn't bother me too much. So as of now I have two happy Orbifolia, a Maranta, a Medallion, a Leopardina and two Musaica.
Some of them get a lot, some a little less light. All of them are consistently watered with distilled water. And yes, the air's naturally moist where I live (45-60%) and I started using a moisture meter very early on because I like to overwater.
I kill other plants. Ficus hate me. So maybe every plant person just has their personal plant nemesis?

I had given up on calatheas for a while after I killed my zebrina, rotundifolia and even a ctenanthe. Now I’m trying again with a makoyana and another zebrina, but I have them in the shadiest part of my lanai outside and so far they’re doing great! Come winter, I definitey need to step up my humidity game inside though.

I haven’t given up on the makoyana or the lancifolia. They do really well for me, but I have no real interest in getting any other ones anymore. The rufibara, and zebrina declined really quickly after I bought them and the ornata did okay through the winter up until mid February when I gave up on it.
My humidity is never under 40% even without a humidifier, but I find that if I put Calatheas anywhere except directly in front of a North facing window, they crisp up really fast. I’ll take a maranta over a Calathea any day. The little blooms are so cute and rewarding!

    • @debrawarrick2911
      @debrawarrick2911 4 роки тому

I got lucky with my maranta. I got a small stem as part of an arrangement. I chopped it in 1/2 so I had 2 and stuck it in soil. It grew like a weed all winter...in Michigan, no less. I think the trick might have been starting with a cutting vs a larger more established plant. I picked up a Zebrina las year and it completely died back with a couple of weeks...I transferred a few small stems with roots to self watering container with sphagnum moss and it quickly gave me 5 new leaves. I am interested in experimenting with Leca as well one of these days. I really do think there is a lot more to 'soil' moisture vs air moisture...in my experience in the midwest, anyway.

I never realized they were so fussy! I love calatheas and they are doing great. I just don't use tap water and I will definitely get some worm castings. They are growing great and this is without fertilizer. It was so hot in my house in the room where I had one of them (85+ degrees F with 80%+ humidity) and had to take that one outside. Now the calathea freddie is doing great outside, out of direct sunlight, of course, otherwise he would fry. I actually need de-humidifiers in the house. Now my prince of orange philodendron is another story, he does NOT like the high heat and high humidity. Had to throw him outside too, have my fingers crossed.

I’m that idiot that got a Calathea makoyana (and a number of other humidity loving plants) for my bedroom and kept my bedroom at 50-65% humidity, 75-79 degrees, often times with no fan/air circulation (except at night sleeping). Then discovered mold and weird orange looking mold growing on some of my plants top soil... Lol! Was so worried about the humidity, it created the perfect environment for mold to grow. Now I keep it at 40-50%, with all my humidity loving plants together, on individual pebble trays, with a small terra cotta looking humidifier from target, with my fan on, and they all seem to be doing fine. My Calathea keeps shooting out new growth! I have all my plants right in front of a north facing window.

gotta love the variety! ranging from the more suble elegance of a rufibarba, to something as flashy and almost uneal looking as a dottie.
i never had much trouble with calatheas, for one simple simple reason: 4 aquariums im my room. so i have fairly high humidity, and an ample supply of soft, bioligically nitrate enriched water, they seem to like. i also found, that calatheas really benefit from a bit of handling .. so dont be shy to ruffle them a bit when you walk by. =')
the one thing to watch out for are spider mites. those can absolutely ravage varieties with more tender leaves, in a matter of 2-4 weeks. i fought the acute infestation with pyrethrine, but i can highly recommend to sprinkle some neem press cake to the soil every month or so, to make them less appealing to mites. occasional preventive spraying with neem oil cant hurt either, and it gives the leaces a really nice shine.

I just picked up the peacock (makoyana) and beauty star (ornata) yesterday and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I walked into a plant shop looking for a snake plant and walked out with 2 Calatheas and a snake plant. The plant shop gal told me the calatheas would do well in low-light and I thought great, my north facing bedroom could use some beauty! I misted my caltheas before work this morning (something I'd read last night was okay - but now seeing maybe not?). Got home this morning to my peacock plant having a couple leaves that are browning and curling on the edges. The Calathea ornata still looks perfect. I inspected the plants pretty thoroughly before purchasing them so I'm thinking the browning happened over the course of today. My home is typically 50% humidity (just checked the thermostat and it's exactly 50% RH), the temperature inside is anywhere from 68-72 F, and today was sunny but with my north facing window and how far I had it from the window there's no way it was in direct light. I'm not sure what could be the problem. The soil is still moist, the plant shop seemed to thoroughly water them. I haven't don't any additional watering yet as my finger test doesn't indicate it's time. Any tips or recommendations?

I have a rattle snake calathea from Home Depot that is thriving in my relatively dry house.. not sure if it was just well acclimated by the grower, it’s a particularly tough strain or of the rattlesnake calatheas are less sensitive! Calatheas are a plant I don't seem to have any trouble with for some reason despite living in a cool climate, which surprised me when I got them a couple of years ago. I've got several and thought I'd have trouble with them but I've had none whatsoever. I find they don't like too much love so mine get watered when needed with rain or distilled water, a half strength feed of a liquid food once a month when they're actively growing (I use a product called Charlie Carp and all my plants, particularly the calatheas just do so well with it) and they're in in fairly low light. I did used to use a my humidifier for them. In fact I bought it specifically for the calatheas but because they're in a large group of plants I find the humidity stays high enough (above 60%. I use a humidity reader) that they love it and I've not used the humidifier for a long time for them. Other than they get pretty much ignored and they're looking beautiful with no crisping and growing like mad even though it's coming into winter where I am. I happy to say I've yet to lose a calathea (lost plenty of other plants though!) and hopefully it stays that way.

I stopped using humidifiers because they were so dang hard to clean! Trying to get out the slime (mold)? Out of the crevices and corners was a PIA. Using a Q-Tip didn’t get all the crud. How hard is it to clean this humidifier?? That is the key to buying one! All the other features are great too, but how to clean??? I don’t have a humidifier now and my humidity in winter was 33%-38%. My calathias (2, I bought before I knew better) I put near south facing window and used tap water but they had drying leaf tips. Found out about distilled water requirement so bought it and moved plant further back into room on a pebble tray, keep moist (PIA) but no more brown leaf tips. I have to admit....I shower with my plants. Mostly with the calathias and a croton....Rambling, bye....

Crazy Plant Guy I was using city water in the Midwest (USA) and definitely could not clean my humidifier by simply flushing with water and using a brush because there were too many little crevices/corners to address. Maybe your new humidifier insides are easy to clean. Please let me know in six months or so if you still feel it is easy to clean. Does your humidifier specify distilled water? Or a special water treatment?

Terracota because i dont want to overwater them. and the key is the light but not direct light. I don't have a humidifier but they are triving. They are my preferate plants. good luck with them.

Good luck! I don't know if you've read Butterfly Whisperer's post but if not, it's worth having a read. I have a Medallion too, she's sitting happily in a north-facing window (I live in the northern hemisphere, I assume that south-facing would be best for your Calathea in NZ?) with new leaves emerging. Quality of water and protection from direct sun appear to be key factors as well as humidity.
Important thing.. if your Calathea loses her leaves and appears to be dying, don't give up and throw her away. Give the plant time to recover and put out new shoots, you might be amazed!

I believe this is going to be a completely separate plant as it looks like a crown but with flowers popping out, so my question is, how do I separate it from the mother plant? Do I cut it or separate its roots from the rest of the plant? It doesn't need repotting, but I would like to separate it. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hey there. As a fellow calathea killer, I gave mine too much water and it died within 3 days lol. I had it for over a year and it was so luscious... but anyways, the thing about setting out tapped water is such a lie. I know everyone on tiktok and stuff talk about it, but unless it's in direct sunlight it won't do anything & who even has the time to wait for the sun to kill whatever chemicals are in it. You should just boil the water and let it cool down. As you do with sea water to evaporate the salts when camping and stuff.

I LOVE calatheas (I have almost 20 different varieties) but I understand the frustration! What works for me is my “calathea corner”- keeping them all clumped in one place, humidity at 55-65%, ceramic pots, and watering with rain water or distilled water when the top inch or two is dry. They have a far away south window but also grow lights that give them medium light. The only one I’ve been unable to keep alive is a red maranta oddly enough! The white fusion is the only one with crisp but they’re particularly fussy. They take more work but for a chronic overwaterer like me it’s nice to have plants to constantly water lol
