- Minecraft Glow Squids Hypnotize you now? Added in Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update, the glow squid is the controversial winner of the Minecraft Live 2020 Mob vote also containing the Iceologer and the Moobloom, rigged by dream. During the trailer announcing the mob, one mechanic was implied but actually never made it into the game: the fact that glow squids could mesmerize and hypnotize you. So I made a mod to add it in!

I was alright with the Glow squid though. But I have to say that I would have been outright enraged if the Icologer won! So I'm just glad that didn't happen, but I was actually a bit confused when the Moobloom was the first out, gotta say; and how about you?

What I love most about this feature is it would give axolotls a real use, To help keep you safe from hypnosis in underwater caves. Placing a pumpkin on your head should also work, Just to stay consistent with the enderman's "don't look" rules.
Good idea, would give the pumpkins and mob heads more utility.
Either that or maybe some usage with tinted glass. Perhaps placing it on your head like a pumpkin or making it into an item like glasses
Thats a great idea, then with a pumpkin you cant have respiration making axolotls a necessity if you are going into water a ton
Pumpkin doesn’t make sense. The glow squid doesn’t need to see you, you need to see it. However I agree that you could combine it with tinted glass to make a form of protection.

Glow ink should be used to brew a potion that grants you the glow squid's power, Letting you hypnotize villagers and other mobs to follow you.
And it could be inverted to a potion with the opposite effect, Repelling neutral and passive mobs from you; Use it to keep the bats away as you mine or in a manhunt in splash potion form to drive away your targets dolphin

There should be a way to efficiently heal glow squid, to go along with such a feature. Like a type of cave kelp where glow squids hide when they get hit, that heals them.
Or, if you could tame them... weponised underwater army of doom...
Potion of Attraction
If used on a player, mobs that look at the player will have increased follow range and attempt to stay within a certain radius of the player.
If used on a mob, it acts as a distraction to other mobs around it.
My brother actually voted for the glow squid for the hypnosis, thinking if he could make any traps with it, and was sorely disappointed that they didn’t add the mechanic at all
if it applied to mobs i think it would have made really good farms (if it also made players and mobs sloely move to it too)

FINNALY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS
When i first saw the mob and video of it hypnotizing jeb, it instantly reminded me of that creature in Subnautica, and how cool it would be to actually see it in the main game, that's the only main reason why I even voted for the mod, not because of dream, and DEFINITELY not because I thought it would glow what?! But yeah they definitely false advertise and that's probably why most of the people voted for it, I'm quite disappointed...

Take the biome vote, if they had said "major world gen changes" instead of "snowier snow", I would have voted for it. Thankfully, it ultimately didn't matter thanks to the sheer amount of people who voted for it because memes, and equally thankfully chest boats and frogs are only one update behind them.
This truly is a missed opportunity. The fact that so many people voted for this just to not get this makes me upset. we could’ve gotten “ice ice baby” or “flowercow” but we got a squid that doesn’t do anything like advertised.
God I despise the Icologer and thank my lucky stars every day it didn't win.
MineCraft is a building game not a combat game. If Mojang wants to keep adding in combat stuff then they should rework Peaceful mode so it's actually playable in the long term.
@@Asocialite__ Actually I dont think minecraft is a building game, if it was just a building game not that many people would play it, the thing that made minecraft famous is that it has a mix of both, so the ones that want to express their creativity through building can build whatever they want, and those who want combat, exploring and killing things can try to beat the game ( of course they probably would add some mods to have more things to fight, but multiplayer is also really fun. )
Thats one of the reasons iceologer should have won, having more bosses and mini-bosses would be incredible for people who like pvp, since right now we only got 3 mini-bosses and 1 boss.
@@Asocialite__ I started playing Minecraft for it's "Survival" Mode. I remember building big castles with lava moats in an attempt to survive the night against hordes of undead zombies and skeletons. The combat isn't the most in depth but the combat stuff was part of the draw to the game for a lot of people.
@@Asocialite__ Aaaaand wrong. Minecraft is a sandbox game: a game with no requirements at all.
That is what makes it special, if it had a strict story or none at all, it likely would not have performed anywhere near as well as it has.
You want to build, then build. Don't try to tell anyone else that it's not a combat game, because that goes against the spirit of the sandbox genre. The point is, you can build, you can fight, you can explore, you can fly from village to village destroying them in as many different ways as you can. You can do whatever you prefer.
TL;DR: the appeal of minecraft is that you can do whatever you prefer. Stop being a selfish prick, if you want to build without dealing with rare mobs, then turn off the mobspawn gamerule, or just do creative, the mode designed for building.

Mojang really dropped the ball on this one. Sure glowing ink is nice but, this is even better imo.
Only hope now is that they maybe expand on glow squids in the future.

Yeah, a compilation of the tweak mods he's made (minus some of the joke portions like the axolotl love hypnosis, as those could get really obnoxious really quick).
Then a Hardcore+ mod that includes stuff like the deadly xp and the snowmercies.
I voted for the exact same reason, it reminded me of that one fish in Subnautica.
I was also hoping it could be a hostile squid, the opposite of the passive squid we already had. Like it would draw you in and then damage you.

Though, I feel like Mojang wouldn't put this in to the base game for difficulty reasons, I could absolutely see this being a feature for like hard mode difficulty. More intrinsic behavior changes between difficulties like this would be totally cool

Or just have it happen to 75% of glow squids, The other 25% will be tagged as dysfunctional and won't be able to use hypnosis and then have levels for the effect (Easy=Hypnosis, Normal=Hypnosis II, Hard=Hypnosis III)
Yes! Ever since the "Zombies only break doors in hard mode" thing was added, I always wondered what else they could do between difficulties.
Reminds me of that one creature in subnautica where it eats you while it hypnotizes you with auditory hallucinations
It'd be nice if glow squids were a mob rather than an animal, making them deal damage in contact while still having the hypnosis mechanic where you're slowed down, you can escape via hitting it away but it will deal like 4 hearts. 3 on Iron, and 2 on netherite and diamond.

pvp isn't that strategic since you have to look at it, plus it'd be only useful in the water unless the effect carries onto land.
The only thing I'd only see this being useful is if it was used in a parkor map as a gimmick of some sort
Actually? I think it could be used for potions or a item of some sorts where it stuns anything that looks at you, sorta like medusa's head but without the being turned into a statue for eternity. Could be used for some interesting plays like stunning players jumping at you over a gap.

For me the reason I voted for it was because I was hoping for a unique kind of dye, which we did get, I just wish you could apply it to wool/concrete/leather as well as signs
Being able to glow dye leather would be rad. A group of folk in leather armor just raving out in their neon blacklight dance club. xD
You can dye signs and item frames, That's about it.
Honestly, being able to make wool and concrete glow like magma blocks would be nice, especially with the spawning change. And having blacklight armour would be sweet.
Would be nice if it gave banners (and shields) a prismarine like texture.
Running with that last idea: prismatic lanterns. Crafted with 5 prismarine crystals and 4 glow sacks, it's a dyable light source. It still puts off normal light, but you can change the block's colour with dyes, and you can read it's colour with a comparator (using the old damage variable order).
that would be a cool feature for parkour, as they could make you look away from the parkour and memorize where to go, which would be really cool!
Always rely on Doctor4t on bringing the most obscure ideas into something so interesting. Also, thanks for confession at the start unironically. Tired of all the arguments about Glow Squid voters being Dream Stans when others voted for it with their own will.
I voted for the glow squid, and didn’t even hear about the dream stuff until weeks later.
I didn’t even vote because Minecraft Live happened like 2AM where I live.
Didn't vote for a mob, but if I did would have been a glow squid because I really didn't care about the other mobs in it at all but the glow squid seemed cool.

I have an idea for the glow squid, Rather than making them emit light since Mojang said that's too difficult for them at the current moment, It should make ores that it swims near emit the glow squid particle effects helping you find ores in the dark underwater caves, Not only that, the glow ink sacs should be able to be brewed to create a spelunker potion (Basically does the same thing as the Terraria spelunker potion) which makes it so that all ores on-screen glow with the glow squid particle effects and mixing the potion with a fermented spider eye could make it into a hypnosis potion which will pacify any mobs its splashed on and force players to look at you. (They should also add glow dye so you can dye your leather armour cuz ya know it's an ink sac and the other inc sac makes a dye).
This is brilliant. I love how he takes what Mojang teases and fails to give us, and then he makes it himself.
Something I think would be really fun would be making it more similar to the Mesmer from Subnautica. It wouldn't really make sense, but having it draw you closer to either try and drown you or eat you would be fun, even if it didn't technically make sense within the gameworld.

Finally a minecraft youtuber wise enough to understand that adding combat-oriented mobs to a game with a terrible combat system, and then having those mobs guard the new area that everyone will want to explore in the new update regardless of how combat-savvy they are, is in fact not a good idea

I was convinced it would be able to Hypnotise you and other mobs. This is the only reason I voted for it. Love its design and particles, but overall a bit of a disappointment.
You should make it so when you eat a glow ink sac you hallucinate random mobs that can still attack you instead of the mesmerising effect

i think it would also be a cool idea if other underwater mobs (i.e. drowned) slowly followed glow squids, mezmerized by their glow. It could be a really useful mechanic for farms!
You could actually make them carnivorous. When you get hypnotized your character will start to get closer to them and when your close enough the squid will damage you. This turning glow squids from nice sights to dangers.

You could make it so it keeps you from harming the squid, like you cant left click on it. It would certainly bring a bigger use to axolotls to deal with them when you're incapacitated.

I still think it would've been a justifiable add if it emitted light. Minecraft sorely needs a lighting update, with mobile light sources like in optifine and potentially even colored light sources. The glow squid could have been the perfect segway into this. Sure, it doesn't look great if it just brightly glows with CURRENT minecraft lighting, but imagine a subtle blue glow!
I usually play with optifine and sometimes I genuinely forget that the dynamic lights are not part of vanilla. They are so fun, interesting and simple it boggles my mind that they aren't. One of the most underrated parts is how creepers light up when exploding, since it gives a visual clue you are about to die violently, which is great for deaf gamers or people who just don't have their sound on.
I didn't actually vote for any of the mobs, but I was really hoping that you could dye armor with the glow ink sacs. Like imagine having armor that slightly glows to help you navigate in the mines (Perfect for the Caves and Cliffs Update).

Like you'd have to get creative with implementing some things, like I think it was the 'Village and Pillage' trailer that had bluestone dust as one of the rewards thrown by villagers, I know it was stated to be an error in the outsourced animation but it fits the criteria for the series you find yourself with here, maybe when you break down lapis to dye you also get bluestone dust which then gets sprinkled on the enchanting table rather than giving it whole rocks.
It would fit thematically too because every other dust/powder has magical implementation in the brewing stand.

Hypnotysing potion - When you drink it, any player around you will get hypnotised when they look at you. This affect will also occur when wearing a full set of leather armor, dyed with glowing ink

For some reason that glow ink sac being able to hypnotize you by eating makes it seem like it could be used to make a hallucinogenic drug(perhaps like scopolamine).
I was going to say they didn't add such a thing because it would be nauseating but I just remembered nether portals and an entire potion effect exists

doctor4t is the only person who can successfully turn a Small Flesh Pouch of Distraction Liquid into a Small Edible Pouch of Liquid Drugs.
I like the way that you divide the tiny mods for kofi (for example this one and the rainbow jeb_ mobs one) and the big mods for curseforge (like the rats mod and the snow dimension) is a neat way to get a bit of cash for the mod but without leaving anywone with a paid barrier for a big mod with a bunch of features :D
Mods I deem good enough to be content mods I keep free, as it's still what I do for a hobby.
Those I put behind supporting me are the ones I would never do if I didn't make videos, and therefore ones that wouldn't be available if I didn't chose to go UA-cam full time, which makes sense.
Don't get fooled though, I had this idea for quite some time, and it'll eventually make its way to effective for free, just need to change a few things first.

I think you can make cool things using that mechanic, for example of you look at intimidating mob like ravager, you'll have a fear effect or smth

I found this video purely by trying to figure out which mod was causing this effect in the first place so I could disable or remove it from a modpack I was playing =w=;
I'm photosensitive and thanatophobic, so when I jumped down into a pool of water in a ravine, the effect caused a panic response and the pulsing wave effect got burned into my eyes (the sounds also didn't do me any favors)
I'm glad I was able to find a way to disable it, and that this video led me to find out which mod could possibly have been.

I also voted glow squid, though my hopes for it being hypnotic weren't high. I was aware at the time of voting that Mojang said that wouldn't be a thing, they just glow, but someone somewhere was bound to fix it. Finally, the hypnotic beauty we were meant to have. :D
They don't glow actually, Mojang also confirmed they don't glow! They're similar to endermen and spider eyes..they're basically on a layer about the darkness shading so it's more like "ignoring darkness"; if they glowed they'd produce some light similar to torches and such but not as bright.

especially if you could use pumpkins or maybe sunglasses made from tinted glass to protect yourself in exchange for a helmet slot
What's weird is that people keep on forgetting specific things for the votes. The only details that might come with the vote are ones the clearly talk about, give information to. I'm sure Agnes talking about how she's afraid of the dark means that the player will now be afraid of the dark.
Same reason I voted for it, maybe it could act like a indirect hostile, once you are mesmerised your character walks towards it without control. And due to the squid being underwater, it basically indirectly drowns you.

you know what else this needs? a fix to regular squids; in where the ink they squirt actually causes blindness, and can be captured in a glass bottle to make... BLINDneSs potions. I just dont know why this isnt in the game already, along with your hypnotizing squids!

I voted for the squid because I thought the mesmerizing effect would work like a safe zone and pacify mobs in the new cave or attract the mobs to the squid instead myself, the player. Glad to see Mona guys aimed to disappoint with this one

While the trailors were a little misleading, if you read about the mobs in the descriptions they were very upfront with the glowsquids being just retextured squids with no hypnotic effects! Goes to show that many don't read descriptions or read😆
It also stated glowsquid wouldn't glow either, and they don't, they more so "ignore darkness"..there's no glow to them like torches.

the glow squid should have a aura around it that makes everything bright and if mobs get inside they are drawn to the squid.
