  • Some thoughts and specific product tips on how to create a more efficient painting process, for those new to the hobby.
    I am no big fan of painting fast. I even think, in general, we concentrate to much on speed in regards to many things in our lives. This all being personal though, I also realize that some just want to get paint on their miniatures efficiently, to be able to get more time for the actual gaming.
    This in mind, I still think speed - as in speed painting, can be mis conceptual. Speed is after all a personal variable. Efficiency though is a constant. And efficiency is the road to get miniatures done in less time than usual.

    Dude, I love the focus on efficiency over speed. Too many painters worry too much about painting as quickly as possible. Lots of folks (especially beginners) don't realize that a simple paint scheme with simple paints will naturally lead to speed.

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 роки тому

      Yeah. And also that speed is so individual. I just like to take my time, but efficient painting can still relatively speed up my process if needed.

      I think I’ve seen the whole arc. When I started it was Airfix kits with Airfix enamels and thinners. Then with Citadel paints acrylics came to dominate. Now oils are being showcased as very useful in addition to or instead of acrylics. I still use enamels and the likes of zhumbrol have also expanded the range of weathering effects.

    a little added information for using oils + acrylics: the solvent for oils, wether it being turpentine or petrol based (whitespirit) does NOT interact with acrylics. its perfectly fine to use those without the fear or rubbing away the acrylic paints.
    just make sure your undercoat is fully cured, since the reductive technique (wiping away the oils) puts mechanical stress to the area - eg. can rub away paints when you wipe like a mad lad :)

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 роки тому

      Agreed! They can stain though, if not varnished, and that can be a desired effect. I usually varnish if the acrylic is like a white that I definitely don’t want stained in the wrong places. But I also think it depends on the acrylic. A very matte Scale75 gets more staining than a Vallejo Game for example.

    • @hanswurst5222
      @hanswurst5222 3 роки тому

      @@52Miniatures matte color usually has a bigger (rougher) surface compared to gloss. satin is inbetween rough and glossy. so yeah matte colors allow more pigment to stick around. like comparing an polished, a fine sanded and a rough sanded piece of metal.
      but on the matter of staining with oils: this greatly depends on the color or more specifically on pigment, pigment grade, brand, time you let the oil cure (james wappel has some really good info on that in some of his videos).
      one key difference between oils and acrylics was for me to understand that with oils, darker colors have mostly lower opacity than bright colors - while its vice versa with acrylics.
      but i originally didnt plan on going into too many details. just wanted to ease some concerns i often hear from people using oils for the first time (e.g. 'doesnt whitespirit dissolve my acrylics?').

    Oils can be extremely cheap. You can buy a set of 12 basic colours from as little as €3 (12 x 12ml Van Bleiswijck tubes made in Holland).
    Only problem is they dry very slowly, typically a few days, even when you add some specialist quick-drying medium, and they’re not very opaque, so are best painted over an acrylic undercoat.
    I find them great for painting horses, where blending colours is the only way you’ll get the subtle change of skin tone required.

      Thanks P! I’m kind of with you there on metallic paints. I find them difficult to apply, and paint with. It’s a different game :) but I’m trying to practice. I know about the water “soluble” oil paints but have not tried them yet. One of the great things with using regular oil paints is the dilution with white spirit, the white spirit adding the “flow” and wash like effects. A property that water does not have because of surface tension. I’d like to experiment with all this as many don’t want to deal with white spirits. But have not got to it yet.

      Javier! I’ve missed you, you know. I thought I saw a comment on the last video, but then couldn’t find it. A Spanish mirage. I hope the parrot is doing well. Yeah, this video was, for me, more of an introduction to some things I find a lot of beginner videos maybe should include (or that I wish I would have payed attention to). But then also realizing so much has already been done... but I was pretty happy with the little minion miniature and I’m mentally working on improving that concept. Hope you are staying safe.

      @@52Miniatures yeah, left a comment here and there. Hard Times, you know. Kids grow up but birds are noisy till the end ;-)
      Saw a comment from someone having trouble with oil paint. Maybe you can address that issue, as as you once were concerned with hobby space, airbrush etc. There are people out who might not have an airbrush friendly life or like that given case, people getting head aches from oil solvents.
      Opening the hobby to people that might want to use a certain technique but by some sort of means can't would be a pretty inclusive topic. You know. Alternatives to messy techniques or something. Just trying to work some ideas out ;)

      I’m glad to hear the bird is keeping you alert :) I agree, I’m constantly juggling the personal access to all the stuff vs. the feeling I had when I started out. The “this video is not helping, because I don’t have an airbrush” feeling. I have been thinking of oil paints actually, and the new “water soluble”... but need to get some to mess with. My understanding is that they are water “cleanable”, but not soluble per say. And all the benefits of white spirit would have to be exchanged for something else. But I’d like to experiment and try. Same with the airbrush, I’d like to get better at airbrush but at the same time I try and do videos not based around airbrush. And then, let’s not get started on 3D printers 😂 I’m having fun though, and I’m very much looking forward to the coming months, I have fun stuff planned. And thank Javier, I appreciate your support.

    Sorry for the down vote. I dig the mention of oil paint/washes, but if your topic is on efficiency, then it should actually be just that. For example, you go quite a bit of distance to mix contrast paints, which prolongs the painting time. It would've been much more efficient to just use the standard contrast paints. Another issue, is your choice of gold paint (there are quite a few better alternatives, that go alot faster). Finally, when applying oil washes over a mini painted with contrast paint, or any paint, its a really good tip to varnish the model first, to protect those initial layers of acrylic paint.

    I've not been that happy with glaze medium + other paints. It works similar to a lot of other mediums of similar viscosity at that point. It works well to thin contrast paints (and each color of those deserves its own grade on how well it works), but otherwise, I think you can use almost any medium for the same effect. I like Golden Hi-Flow to really thing things down. (very thin, plus flow improver in it).

    My major beef with oil paints is the resultant cleanup. I hate the smell of white spirits, I hate having jars of disgusting white spirits and paint sludge around, then trying to separate out the white spirits that are still good into another jar that's going to sit around and be stinky and sludgy... having to find a place to evaporate the spirits out before I throw away the sludge, having to worry about my trash randomly lighting itself on fire if I throw away a paper towel I've blobbed thinner on while cleaning my brushes. They do some beautiful washes, but so do acrylic washes and I'm less worried about those sitting around remaining sticky for a day or two. I wonder if this same effect could be achieved with open acrylics and/or water mixable oils?

    • @52Miniatures
      @52Miniatures  3 роки тому +1

      I don’t really have any issues, I still have the same jar of white spirit I filled a year back. But it is a bigger hassle than water that’s for sure. I’m spontaneously thinking water soluble oil paint would not work as well as traditional, for washes.
      I’m guessing it is the properties of the dilutant and not the paint that makes the wash what it is?

    • @zamo9660
      @zamo9660 3 роки тому +1

      Water has the physical property known as 'surface tension' attached to it.
      Water makes domes (drops) instead of lying flat on non porous surfaces. You can kill that with a tiny bit of dish soap.
      That's half the reason why oils are great: no water, no surface tension , so the flow as hell, hence their use for pin/panel washing on war related scale models.
      The other half is that it takes longer for oils to cure and while they are at it, they can be reactivated by adding solvent.
      Acrylics somewhat (to make this shorter) turn into a plastic layer over the model, and that's kinda fast, so no forgiving wet blending nor subtractive techniques with Acrylics.
      Life is too short to worry about everything: the 3 of us are still alive despite the solvent fumes. Nasty odour but that's all. Even parrot with small lungs is fine.
      If it's way too much of a concern you can put everything aside on the yard, balcony, window... till smell kinda wears off.
      Closest to oil washes you could get would be dipping miniatures in wood stain or the equivalent product for shoes care, let it cure for a moment and shake the excess away / wipe it with a piece of cloth I'd say.
      Happy paintin'

      @@zamo9660 It's not that I'm 'worried' about the fumes it's that they immediately and irreparably ruin my day - I get a major headache after working with white solvent even if I do it outside on the patio. Having to smell it inside afterward - or deal with a model that has dust stuck to every part of it due to being tacky for 2 days when I dry it outside in the desert... throwing away gobs of paper towels, q-tips, tinfoil (for my palette, so I don't have to also clean IT with white spirits), for 1 night of painting is just... so much. It was certainly worth trying but when I throw away a mass of crud larger than a model just to paint 1 guy and get a huge headache for my troubles, I suppose it's just not worth it. Maybe I'll give water soluble oils and water with some dish soap in it a try...

      You don't have to! But you can experiment with it. The mayor difference is the "texture" of what you add oil washes to. A satin or glossy surface does not stain as much and the wash flows better. A matte surface is the opposite. Some paints are already satin finish - like GW and vallejo paints. I use a lot of Scale75 and that is very matte. So I varnish sometimes to get a better flow, or when I don't want any staining.
