"Now on to the star of the show herself, our Elven Necromancer..." *cut to immediate brushing of the butt*
Wouldn't it be interesting to paint the same set of miniatures changing the mother colour, but keeping the rest of colours the same? To see how it really impacts on the overall feeling.
I'd definitely say that's a good shout, looking at this model I do wonder if it's the mother colour or his choice of colours which have tied this paint job together more.
There is a way to mix mother colors and entire color schemes seamlessly. Look for more info on TriaDart on UA-cam. Its a state of the art parametric color dispenser.
This is an amazing idea I'd love to see that as well, have like 5 finished versions
That's what he should have done for this video, I guess.
“If a color goes somewhere, it must go everywhere” - the book of wappel
I'm a mother color, you're a mother color, we should paint each other's mothers.
Paint each other's mooooms!
Good thing I'm not the only one that had that song pop in my head after this video
I'm painting that lady, where you came out as a baby
Halo tip was actually a useful way to think of hair highlight. Thanks for the advise
Yes, little golden tip hidden away as a small comment
Ninjon, you are one of the very few Mini Painting UA-camrs that I check daily to see if I missed a video - please don’t ever stop producing content!!! You’re legendary man!
Marco Frisoni's style combining significant underpainting, transparent inks, and oils is basically this. The ultimate style using this methodology is executed by James Wappel, his coloured shadeding + oils ensures that every mm of the model is blended with a mother colour.
Love watching both of those guys paint. James was the first that came to mind as he always uses the "Mother Color" concept.
@@GusB156 I've definitely seen Ninjon in the Wappel twitch chat. James' might be the most overlooked painting content creator. Anyone that wants to take their craft to the next level should take the time to watch 3-4 of his streams for a few hours.
Yup james is crazy , I've been trying his style out for awhile .
Marco Frisoni and Ninjon are definitely my favourite two UA-cam mini painters
Jon, mate, I've gotta say. Your intro is S-tier. I've rewinded it numerous times to see that loveable dorky face spin round
I tried to explain this to my wife and she didn’t understand
I love the dorky spin :D
The music 🎶 is great as well.
When I first started working there was another apprentice who came on board at the same time. He was a complete troll idiot. He would plaster your PC lock screen with gay porn, but not before changing the unlock password whenever you went to make a coffee... That kind of idiot. Anyway, after a couple of months of 'breaking you in' he'd become one of the best friends ever. The dorky spin, and Jon's overall demeanour, remind me of him so damn much.
Jesus Fucking Christ that guy was a dick. xD
"Don't blend anything until you've established your values" is something I learned from watching portrait painters and art conservation videos.
Great advice and I need to put it into practice more!
My values are fairly culturally conservative. There, gonna start painting that army now.
@@sirrathersplendid4825 Laughed waaaay too much at this.
@@sirrathersplendid4825 First of all, I agree. Second of all, good luck.
10:01 aaaaarggggghhhh my ears!
good video.
Thought my headphones were dying😂
I had to check my earbuds, then rewatch to see if it was the video 😂🤘
"he's a cat" wtf Jon 😂 purrfect.
Awesome painting!
It's gorgeous. It looks like a comic drawing, which is very unique for a 3D model and I love it.
Love how great your channel is...being best friends with Miniac, it would be easy to duplicate his style and channel, but you constantly bring new meaningful and interesting information while making it all feel exculsively Ninjon. Thanks for all your hard work!!!
Ninjon, I really love your videos! More than just techniques, they seem like attempts to free people of constraints they put on themselves to do something like "it's supposed to be done", and instead do something odd and weird and ultimately AWESOME!
Your videos really help me get out of my painting rutt and just go for something cool!
Thanks a lot!!!
I love that you make a point of not caring about smooth blends, but a dark base and deliberate strong highlights. As someone with not a lot of painting time during the week, techniques to make a striking look are great to see
So many things I liked here: Dobby, hearing the word "mother color", watching Jon have stroke saying "brack" and the PHENOMENAL piece/painting style. Definitely a technique to try.
For a future video please go in your display cabinet and show what's in there and the story behind them. I think there's awards in there somewhere.
+1
When first learning how to highlight hair, I'd look at hair dye box art and they usually give a really good example of the 'halo' thing you mentioned.
Oh my God.
This is the most beautiful and at the same time simplest model in terms of colors that I have seen with you so far.
I was just on the shop page and next to this diorama I found 3 other models that I would buy right away - but I don't have a printer: /
Damn
Please keep it up with the mothercolor thats a very easy and cool way to paint - I made the experience myself in art class and my Gray Knights mixed in a blue and used it in all colors.
Love the Goobertown Cup in the Background. Love the Comunity for being one and totally wholesome. Thanks!
This is one of the most visually pleasing color schemes I have seen. It hits my brain in just the right way.
I love that this guy doesn't just edit out his mistakes. It's so hilarious and I legit never laugh so thanks
that necromancer is raising something else if you know what i mean
Yes: Suspicion!
First time I heard from this and it's a really amazing and simple to implement idea. Thank you for your lazy but always inventive way of mini painting =) also Sam and Vince are such great teachers and masters of their craft.
Good video, Jon. I especially love the points where you "keep it real" -- like the reminder to us (and yourself) that wet paint looks different than it does once it dries. The fact that I am a Minnesota native is just a bonus...
Love it! The halo aproach to simulate the sheen of hair is something I've never thought of before. You are one of the few content creators who teaches me something every video.
What a great video!! You're only getting better!
Maaaaan...This must be one of Your best paintjobs (at least for my taste) Her pale skin, the Earthy tones Freakin' awsome man. That is some oldschool "Conan the barbarian" bad guy wibes.
“i don’t bother with blends, I can deal with that later”.
How? UA-camrs like to say stuff like that, but how do you do that? Do you glaze the whole stuff with the mid tone? Over and over agin? Do you glaze two gradients of color at a time? How in the heck do you soften stark edges? Plenty of videos on glazing out there, but none that really bothers showing how you get from layers to blends.
I know it’s perhaps boring for someone with your skills, but that’s what I’d want to see. You’d probably get tons of views as well...
Just applying a flat glaze of the base colour over a simple layered highlight-and-shade already makes it look more blended with deeper colour; I guess the next step up is using a lighter glaze and 'pushing' the pigment into the highlight areas.
So, this is my guess. When people draw, they sometimes will just put in big blocks of one big color in each main area to visually sort things out. I see a lot of people call it flat coloring. After the main colors are in is when they go back to add dimension. I think that's what he's trying to imply.
Also, This link below is the best tutorial on blending I've found. On mobile, sorry for bad formatting.
ua-cam.com/video/Mp7X3AA54tQ/v-deo.html
9:50 he shows how he did it, he heavily thins down his base tone, but the mid tone works too
this might be my favorite mini youve painted! amazing story and mood emanating from the piece!
love this! And the end result? Stunning!
Really enjoying your videos. They have an approachable style rather than making me feel like it is impossible to achieve what you are doing/trying out. They also are just a reminder that painting is fun and experimentation, not just a drag to get through!
That is one jaw-dropping sculpt (and paint job!)
Everything You paint seems so easy, but incredibly effective... Beautiful paint job❤️
Another great video man, I really enjoy these videos where you dabble in art concepts that most other mini painters don't
MY DUDE. This just blew my mind. THANK YOU for making this video.
This is cool stuff, I like to do a similar thing with washes to keep a unified tone on all the colours, never thought to try it like this so definitely going to give it a go!
Seconding this. Aggressive washing after base colours makes those "loud" colours (or very dark ones) stand out more.
I agree with Rudolf Frank, Goobertown Hobbies has great cats, especially Ginger as he is so photogenic .
As for the female in the scene I'd have made her skin more translucent, as after all she is meant to be a Necromancer so lives in the depths of darkness and if coming out anywhere near light and that would be blue lighting , give her skin that bluish tinge - try it and see what you think.
This seriously was a good tutorial, I've been painting a while but always had this issue of my colors feeling not "together", the mother color idea that brings it all together and makes it live in the same world is so good. Thx
This may be my favorite video from you. This is definitely my favorite paint job you did. There are other much more difficult things you did, but this emanates darkness yet calmness of the scene. Wow. I wish i could see this one IRL.
Really liked this technique you showed today. I immediately had to try it myself and I have to say it is so much fun to paint this way. Keep these nice technique focused videos coming! I love them!
The Brushes, point down, in those cups in the background are giving me the willies.
For reals though, this is a great video with great information. You make it accessible as you talk through your process and display some dope skills. You have a very down to earth way of expressing your message through video that makes the viewer feel like they could take on the most difficult techniques without a care in the world. Not just trying to blow smoke either, you've genuinely got a talent and flow that most strive, for years, to achieve and your painting talent only re-enforces that feeling. Great video production (soundtrack, cuts, narration, lighting), great painting, great discussion. I genuinely hope you're able and willing to do videos for a long time coming because this is timeless gold.
Super instructive, well produced and pleasantly paced. Thanks a lot Jon!
That turned out awesome. Good job, thanks for the concept. This gave me a lot to think about.
This is one of your best videos ever. I keep coming back to this one as its just so great to watch and experiment with this technique.
Wow, thank you. The mother colour idea is what I've been missing. I had a lot of clash with colors between black/dark shadows and white highlights with all the other colors and blends, and could not figure out why. This was extremely helpful. Again, many thanks.
Great Video, Jon! I'm looking forward to trying this.
Color theory way back from college. That contrast as all things from dark to light, saturated to desaturated, hue contrast and warm vs cool. When you manage to use one, it looks good. Two looks really nice, when you have mastered it to the point where you have contrast from all different forms of color *chefs kiss*
I strive for this kind of color use in my minis. And a favorite mother color for me is purple. Makes sweet shadows and fleshy bits.
"I'm glad you asked!" part was hilarious!
One of you best pieces you've painted on the channel. Love it man
Thanks Jon - you've hit three new themes I'd not heard before in my many years of painting. 1) I've struggled with choosing good palates, but that's simplified by Mother Color. 2) The Halo for hair highlights - brilliant. 3) Not freaking out about the blending from the get-go - I've had many "finished" minis that have totally lost their pop by the time I'm done and then wonder what the heck happened. Super. Thanks for the great video.
Another great paint job. Always a couple of great tips in your videos. love ye man
Oh Jon, I totally feel the pain of my mouth doing it’s own thing! Fantastic job on the model, and thanks for the crash course on Mother colors!
A very interesting concept. Your model turned out great, very dark and spooky. Love it.
This literally came out as I was struggling with improving my scheme! Thanks!
The Zorn palette; I was introduced to this way of mixing from a very limited range of colors a few years ago at a life drawing class. I usually switch out the ivory black for a deep indigo or prussian blue and find it really useful when I want to use color but need to focus more on dramatic light and shade across a piece. Great stuff as always and thanks for introducing the concept of 'mother color' to me. Cheers!
I think this is my favorite model you've painted. The model itself is SO gorgeous, and her beauty is only surpassed by you're paint job of her.
You really brought that miniature to life, I look forward to printing it & seeing if I can follow your instructions.
I'm restarting my love for 40k Space elves and upon looking for painting advise stumbled over your channel.
I love your work and your videos help me a lot. Thanks for that
Great model and fantastic video, thanks Jon!
Wow great stuff, your tips might be some of my favorite in the miniature painting space
Not only is the concept of a mother color great, I really enjoy your videos because you show each concept and idea on an actual miniature.
Excellent video as usual Jon, really impressed with the skin tones and highlight placement
The glowing eyes just make the whole thing spring to life
This was actually really cool and gives me another interesting painting technique to research and practice on my next model. Your model here turned out so well!
Really like you pushing through even when you’re not super happy with your blends. I end up getting stalled by fixing my blends on big models and then just lose all momentum!
Me yesterday: I don’t know what color scheme to do for my ranger.
Ninjon video to the rescue!
That model is gorgeous though.
Really nice concept. I feel like between all the amazing mini painting advice on UA-cam, I'm finally able to understand volumes, light, colour just a little bit and it's having a great effect on my painting. Definitely going to give this mother colour technique a shot!
(Also mother colour is definitely the way we should address all other miniature painting hobbiests from now on).
Just phenomenal, thank you for sharing and please stay safe.
Congratulations man! You’re becoming a really good artist! Your progress since you opened the channel is impressive ! Thanks to share your journey and inspiration. Hard work really pays off! Cheers! ✌🏻
John incredible job, just in the time I’ve been a Patron since you guys started the podcast. You’re just getting better and better! Top man
I know of a few professional illustrators known for adding a light natural purplish color wash over their near finished illustrations to unify their colors more.It works wonders! So you could try to paint normally on most of the figure, then add a color wash to unify the colors, then add some final touches.
i really enjoyed that journey you took us on. turned out awesome.
Absolutely fabulous. The necromancer socks so mysterious and suple. I had never heard of this technique and am truly impressed by how beautiful it is. Sometimes less is more
Such good advice! This changed my painting game. Thanks so much!
Ya, when you make a paint scheme try to always have a spot color, this works especially well, when you are painting a monochrome piece, you can pick a striking area and add a bright color like a real, or an electric green.
Like i said an Scott's channel. You guys channels are invaluable to all levels of painter. I'm just getting into it and loving it . Truly inspirational. Thank you👌
Beautifully done.
I have been looking everywhere for a painted example of this model ever since I found it. Thanks for showing this technique with her. I already printed the bust version, and want to eventually do all 3, testing techniques, as I just started mini painting. Gorgeous model.
If anyone wants to look deeper in to this concept, the term colour “Gamete” is what it’s really known as in art.
your gamete is normally set but the tone of light that is present. like at sunrise your gamete will be more orange or red, late evening more purple or blue. James Gurny has tons of great stuff in his books about this.
This is a cool technique, I think I will try it soon. Thanks for sharing!
That intro! 🤣🤣 Your videos keep on getting better & better! Thank you.
Work of art my friend. Extremely impressed :)
You did it again, you mothercolor! Again a really nice video. Love the color scheme.
The result is very beautiful. You did a great job and i will definitely try this out.
Fascinating. Well done.
Great video, thank you! The sculptor did an amazing job - a very sensual feel to an act of necromancy. And your paint work really displayed it well.
Muthaculluh!!!
Thanks for bringing this to light (really??puns!!) since I missed Vince & Sam's exposé...AND for showing it off so well.
Cheers
🥂🥃🥃🥃👍
Your intros are the best. This is an awesome technique, friend. I did this before on my one of my minis by accident, but I thought it was an accident. I will explore this in the future.
such a great sculpture
The effect of the mother color is honestly incredible, I can't wait to try it out. It makes the models seem so much more natural and alive
cool technique! Thanks for sharing!
This is the only mini painting channel I watch for the entertainment and not just the hints or tips. Friggin great, keep it going,😉. Always nice to see someone 'worship' Iris as-it-were.
Ur Vids just keep getting better & better
Ur straight "KILLING DA GAME!"
your channel is super great, I love the sense of humor, you are very informative. your sketches at the beginning always make me laugh and I always feel more inspired to paint and more armed to be able to paint well after watching a video. thanks for all the work you do.
Super nice paintjob!
Holy tendies... This video was my favourite miniature painting video of all time. I knew about this technique through Sam and classic art but this flipped some switch in my head the way you explained and demonstrated it. Thank you, may your tendies always be fresh, warm and crispy.
Beautiful work! Definitely something I will have to try out soon. Also, I really like the music in this video
Damn that sculpt is just amazing. And you did a great job too
Loving the model & your restrained but excellent paint scheme.
