This is an extended version of a drum cover for Parabola. If you want to skip straight to the drumming, please follow the link to the short version, or you can indulge me on this short film.
The images you see at the beginning and end were taken from an archaeology course that I teach, and the lecture deals with imagery and mysticism through the ages. Tool uses a lot of the same imagery in their artwork and videos. Esoteric symbolism has been handed down through the ages and can be traced back to ancient Egypt and Sumeria. I find the historic and archaeological perspective of mystical imagery fascinating, and I hope these photographs are interesting to more folks than me.
I'm not trying to interpret Tool's videos or lyrics. I'm just showing some of the archaeological and artistic sources of the imagery they frequently use. I see a lot of initiatory symbolism prevalent in Tool's artwork that was long ago adopted in all of the Orient as keys to all ancient and modern mythologies. The tree of knowledge, magnetic serpent, third eye, and several other cabalistic allegories.
Beyond all that, this song is SO FUN to play on the drums. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I had some camera problems on my favorite take - the battery crapped out. So I put together two takes - one for the main song, and another take of the solo at the end. That's why you'll notice a different ride cam between the two.
Thanks so much for watching!
I'm glad you liked the intro - this is one of my favorite videos and not many people watch it. It's like a club of hardcore Tool fans in here :-)
Intro video content awesome!
Hello from Crimea :)
Great work!
I'm sorry. But I listen to Tool for the uplifting parts. Life is too short for somber or depressing music.
@@davidspurlock1111 bruh wut
Do you have a drums only for this masterpiece

This guy nailed it. It's incredibly difficult to emulate Danny Carey. So many polyrythms and odd time signatures make him a 'mysterious' drummer haha. This guy obviously has spent a lot of time practicing this song though, very well done.
Lucky Mouse Great comment
Plus the guys like 6' whatever" & 200+ lbs. He's a beast! Watching Danny live, it's like he's a giant playing the set. Such a skilled musician. Plus he's the oldest one in the group with the most experience. It wasnt like this guy formed a band, made it, & progressed from there. He was a musician for hire. For a career. Constantly playing... Did I mention his size?
Seriously, is no one going to talk about how damn slick his left hand was at 7:20 ??
TOOL is such a tricky band to emulate, John is incredibly detailed in his renditions, if TOOL ever need a stand in drummer John Kew should be first in line. What a stunning job he does. Well done John, you sir are a LEGEND!
Good point about how their music allows you to immerse yourself. I really love how their music is not one-dimensional, but also how the band members don't get too caught up in how awesome their music is. They all seem to be pretty humble about it, even Maynard in his own way, haha.
It's Calabi-Yau space, dude! And You bring it to light! Awesome!
Maynard couldn’t give two shits about Tool now.
To quote Tuco: "TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT!"
Heisenberg wouldn't approve
Please make REFLECTION drum cover,
I love that song.
yes plz do dude
Reflection is best if it includes the other two tracks meant to go with it: Disposition -> Reflection -> Triad. So I say, play all three back to back to back!
My favorite Tool song by far.
Danny's drums is what got me into listening to Tool. He makes them feel "alive", for a lack of a better word to describe the feeling. They're not there just to give the rythm for the other instruments or to be a background beat. They sound free and ever changing, evolving as the song progresses. He writes masterpieces, that man. And you play them very damn well, sir John, keep up the great work! :)
Lucifri yes! He lets them "sing". Watch the video on his custom kit. It's incredible.
Danny isn't a drummer as much he is a percussionist
Best cover Of parabola EVER
Oh yeah!
Clearly John was just getting ready for some Ticks and Leeches action with that ending solo :p
Great stuff man! I love your covers.
Thanks - and Ticks & Leaches is definitely on the list for songs I want to learn...
I play it on the bass and I saw it live a few years ago. It's truly and amazing song.
Stick twirl at 4:29 = goddamn epic! I can watch this video (and the other Tool covers) all day long! Great job!
Wow, thanks so much for your kind words my friend. Much appreciated :)
@T3hN00b1n4t0r Thanks dude - I was wondering if people would stick around for the solo. I figured since this song has been done a hundred times, I'd try something a little different. Glad you liked it!
İ actualy downlad this version of yours on my phone to listen mp3
Reading about this "solo" had my curiosity. DAMN glad I got to witness this. LOVED it!!!
Normally I don't like embellishments, but I was moved by the musicality of that outro. Great work.
6:40 to 7:00 is the music of God
I love seeing your archaeology background bleed into your covers. The imagery was very interesting. I never knew that Tool's art was so inspired by ancient symbolism, but, I honestly should've expected it considering Tool lol.
TO ME: Dannys playing sounds more like an entire percussion ensemble rather than just one guy on a large drum kit.
You play drums and teach and know plenty about history and archaeology. You must absolutely kill it with the ladies.
I love the fact you dissect the song with more than just music but the imagery and lyrics also. Brilliant beyond words! Thanks for your insight into Tool.
Brilliant Drumming as always and a really cool video. Absolutely awesome imagery, fits perfectly!
I've been surfing UA-cam for drum covers of this song, and yours is by far one of the best. You're precision, and the smoothness of how you played this piece is amazing, congrats on an amazing cover.
That fill at 4:48 is so dirty! I love it!
....Wow....that ending...I'm speechless.
This is exactly how you play rudiments all over the kit. I don’t know how you keep up with exactly which hand hits what. I hear snare hits, but there are so many ghosts in Danny’s playing, especially with the toms. Holy hell man.
Love the fact that that the intro in itself has the lenght of your standard pop song!
Been playing drums all my life, and Danny is my favorite drummer. I wish I was good as you are. Damn you.
Many thanks - not many folks have commented about the imagery at the beginning, so your feedback is very much appreciated.
really nice work, good taste on pictures at the beginning and the end, and obviously very well played
gotta love the switch to traditional grip.
This is the first time that i see a COMPLETE cover of this amazing song . Thank you.
Without a doubt the best drum covers on you tube. You might be one of the most relaxed and natural looking drummers I have ever seen. I just started playing the drums at 52 and I have learned more by watching your videos than any other drummer around. Please do more covers and I would love to know your background, were you self taught or go to a music program. Thanks
I just picked up the drums myself at 50. And i have learned a lot from these covers.
This is by far my favorite song by tool
Hell and I struggle with just walking down the street. Nice talent your displaying !! I salute you John!!
10/10 for the skill, 1 bonus point for the style !
What are the chances that this track will be revisited with slightly better audio? You nailed it, man.
Can't get enough of this!
awesome stuff brother. Im keen on esoteric history and imagery especially and appreciated your sharing of the imagery. but most of all 10 massive points for the stick spin early on. lol. cool as!
Excellent work, as always. Cheers!
Simply awesome.
One does not simply jump this fantastic intro...
Your playing and precision was spot on...however, the stick toss and flip at 4:28...un effing believable!
this cover is sooooo spot on!!! its crazy good
Dude the outro solo was fucking amazing man
This is only the second video I've seen from you and Im already subbing. Good work man.
I love it. The solo at the end was great. Very tasteful. It's harder than it seems to hold yourself back and play within that meter at the end.
love the energy, good cover
at 4:50, I was like how did he hit those cymbals so fast. o.O great drumming!
this was FANTASTIC man ... solo at the end was tasteful.

Sick!!!! I love that song! You match greatly with it
Totally nailed the snare tone. Don’t know if that was intentional, but knowing your attention to detail, I’d say it was! Awesome as always.
man you killed it!!
Holy crap man.... You are INCREDIBLE!
I'm just binge watching your Tool covers and they're all so ridiculously good!! As a drummer, progressive drummer mainly, I can say that you sir are amazing. Best Tool covers on UA-cam hands down, the rhythms you're able to apply so accurately impressed me since the first cover I've seen you do. You're basically the main source of motivation as of right now, I'm gonna go play some drums now!!
Thanks man, I'm glad you're liking the videos!
You're welcome! Always a pleasure to support your vids, keep rockin' 🤘🎶👍
amazing drum cover AND an appreciation of ancient symbology. You are a class act, sir! :)
Epic, dude. What an incredible cover!
Wonderful drum cover!
very talented dude you're blessed.
great cover man
keep it up
Tool songs are very very difficult to perform. And the most difficult thing to be at the level of Danny. Very hard to match. But this guy is some performer. Thumbs up man. Keep playing.
Excellent Job Man... Excellent choice too.
Improv at the end was a nice touch to an awesome cover.
awesome work on all your covers it's a sigh of relief to see someone that can play and record cut and master a great cover keep up the good work
It’s amazing the level of dedication that you’ve put into your craft! You are hands down the best drummer doing covers on UA-cam, your technique is flawless and powerful and are able to put so much emotion into your playing!!
