Making a Topwater Crawler Lure, Step-by-Step

- I have been wanting to make a crawler lure for a while but I have been put off by how to design the shape of the wings to guarantee that the lure will have a strong crawling action. And then, it just came to me one day! In this video I go through the build, step by step, and show you what I figured out to make a topwater crawler with killer action.

I am loving the water videography.... the rain drops, the topwater and underwater footage, the slow mo... well done!
Thank you😊
congratulations, great solution for the wings...I had given up on my project with wings...
When i was in to freshwater bass fishing the old wood Heddon crazy crawlers were one of my absolute favorite lures to use. Never cared much for the plastic ones as they never cast of swam the same. I think I'll need to make one of these to see how it works for Striped bass.
Another creative lure design...👍👍👍
i can remember my uncles brazing lures when they were living there remember they took off a hud caps from a police car the had chrome one they love the challenge of finding thing to build from it i have shelves filled with jigs and patterns to lures in on of the sheds their had
opened a new lever of lure making for me now that's i now understand how they made theirs now from you
Beautiful work as usual. That lure covered in fur and with a tail, man that would be a killer combination for snakeheads!
I'm planning to be in south Florida later in the summer...I'll have this with me targeting snakeheads.
@@EngineeredAngler - Cool, good luck, hope ya smash'em!
Nice build, got a big chuckle out of "red doesn't count"!
Yes...I seem to have issues with limiting colors. Oh well could be worse...
Great episode! I think you just set yourself into a league of your own.
Wow... that's so nice of you to say.
Very cool...ha ha...great action!
What a cool build, and such good videography!
Thank you
Once again an excellent lure build and some serious thinking outside the box well done.
Thank you
I can't remember the antique lure with this design. Was a phenomenal lowlight lure from way back in the day
Heddon Crazy Crawler...They still work great...
Great job! 🙂
Beautiful work!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic crawler! I am gonna built this brutal lure too i think with 4 wings. Maybe i catch some hungry pikes over here.. Thanks for sharing and caring Franco!🤝
Good luck and thanks.
You are welcome and have a nice weekend!
Muy bueno por más videos así.... Excelente saludos
Gracias
Really Cool! Looks like an Olympic swimmer.
BTW, welcome back, hope all is well with you!
All is well, thank you.
we use these type lures here in Australia all the time on murray cod. They work best at dusk, night and dawn.
I wonder how your bass like it.
looks great
I'm looking forward to giving it a shot at sundown on my lake. Thank you for watching and for commenting.
Idea try the clear plastic knife you profile shape is almost there just heat with heat gun to twist your wing and the backbone of knife should be about as strong as your prototype for hinging
I’m enjoying this video
I'm happy to hear it...thank you.
This is a great build and reminds me of an old Heldon crazy crawler lure my grandfather gave me. Larger size will be a great Muskie/pike lure. Action is tremendous. Form follows function - meaning the lure looks bulky in the water the action is great.
Thanks.
Another awesome lure Franco!!! Love the concept and creative techniques you used to create the wings and give them fantastic action.🙌
Thanks a bunch
Another great idea. Well done and explained.
Love your channel! Wondering if you made the wings out of a plastic spoon if you could use some old silverware from a thrift store for metal wings. Keep up the amazing work. I have learned a ton from your channel!
That was my first idea but I have not been able to find spoons with thin enough metal. I'm thinking stainless measuring spoons are often very thin...the experiments never end, I love it.
cool bait! i'm curious how well the gule on the spoons holds up... also think i know a lake near you that you should try fishing it!
The frog looks grate I am in A.U and make a lot of surface lures and have found you don't need the weight in the bottom of your lure. The wings will self right the lure as it is moving along.
Muy buenos videos, saludos desde Colombia...
Saludos. Pasé una semana en Medellin en Abril. Todo el mundo muy amables y la comida deliciosa.
Genius!
Consider using a piece of pipe to do ur bends , I'm guessing 11/4 or 11/2 pipe maybe 2" for a slow rolling curve
Breaststroke. Cool !
Oh yeah!
Great build. I personally like the wings from the spoons because of the compound curve but wondering if you saw a difference in action with the angle bend on the Lexan? 👍
Not much...I did have to trim a bit off the tips to get a more aggressive action...but it works.
This style lure would make an awesome mouse looking bait after you add a tail.
I was thinking the same thing...
Hi my friend
Did you make that fish sculpture that’s on the outside of your shop? That could be a cool video, even if there isn’t much engineering involved
No...it was a gift.
Those turned out great. Did you have to do much tuning to get them to crawl correctly?
On the larger one...it was just chugging ahead. It had too much wing tip. Ground down about an 8th inch off the tips...works like a charm.
I think you did some wanderful engineering, but I can't see a bass hitting that lure because of the wings being in the way,, I'd love to have that lure just to put in a collection..
Bass love these walking lures especially in low light.
Great lure build as always. Did you have any issues with the support wire in the wings bending back to far after a few casts and retrievals.
No, the little stopper wire works pretty well, we'll see what happens when I get a fish with it
Make a yellow baby duck with those wings
Can you make a jigerbug?. ps that's a nice lure.
here's my version:

Could make the wings out of dollar store metal spoons
Hello. Frog world championship. I have one question. Do the wings withstand taking a large fish and do they not affect the number of bites because the fish "bounce". Greetings from Poland.
I think a really big fish could damage the wings but there's always a price 😀
We can no longer get plastic spoons in Australia. Would the bamboo spoons work?
Sure...give it a try.
Hi Franco, I recently took a stab at a crawler design of my own, but when retrieving, the entire bait spins like a propeller. I am guessing this is a result of the wings being off set but I'm not positive. Do you have any insight on this?
That's right uneven pressure on the flippers
Swims like my kid.
Ha...you're right. I couldn't quite place what it look like but you hit it right on the head
When i did this kind of lure i had always the same problem, it always rolls on itself
Wing shape is everything....
