It’s pretty sad how many sopranos fans can dissect and understand the flaws of so many characters and relationships, yet when it comes to AJ vs his parents everyone just goes the same old tired route. Whining about AJ, loving when Tony is ‘being strict’ with him. Meadow turned out ‘so great’ but AJ is ‘such a brat’. The astronomical failure of Tony and Carmela as parents, and the effect the entire family has on AJ, is probably one of the most important messages about the whole story. Never made sense to me how people can see the kind of monsters the parents and rest of the family are but completely separate that from now AJ turned out, as if he just spontaneously decided to be an annoying brat.

I think it's sad that AJ's problems all stem from his inability to connect with his dad. That's why he fainted because he knew he was a failure and even if he went he would screw it up. AJ trying to kill Junior was him trying to be like "I want to be the kind of son who'd avenge his father, to make you proud." Once Tony shoudlve taken AJ camping or fishing to bond.

I don't know why always when there are dislikable characters, namely AJ and Richie Aprille, people start to defend the actors for being so good that you dislike the character, although no-one never adresses any dislike towards the actors. It's not the actor they dislike, it's the character, and it's the writer that makes you dislike the chatacter.
Inb4 yes I know it also requires skill from the actor to transfer that antipathy from paper to screen, but that's their job and it's the least we can excpect. I'm not calling anyone a bad/mediocre actor, I'm just tired of these "We all hate Richie/AJ because the actors are so good lol" comments. No, we dislike them because David Chase made them to be dislikable.

You make a valid and good point. Chase DID do a lot towards making this happen, no doubt. Still, if the actors did not do their part so well, we wouldn't have enjoyed the series as much. Kinda like the Post Office. Managers and heads create a system that works for the most part. While it IS the job of the sorters and carriers to get stuff where it is going, when they drop the ball and fail to get stuff to the proper destination, the whole process suffers because the front line people failed. Similarly, if an actor or actress doesn't do a good job, the production fails. When they do a great job, the production is stellar.

It's very interesting how they treat AJ in this scene: like a toy or a doll to be dressed up, his wishes be damned. This attitude was present in all interactions of Tony and Carmela with their children. Or weren't you watching the series? Being ignored and erased is enough to damage a kid for life. And AJ had this throughout his life from his parents. They just wanted his kid to behave so he wouldn't be a problem. They didn't give a shit about him. And then they acted surprised that AJ couldn't cope with anything.
All the ridiculous edgelords either saying he's like that because Carmella coddled him or that he deserved what he got... They simply don't understand what they're watching. Both Tony and Carmela failed AJ. Tony never gave a shit about anyone, the good feelings he had were all self-referential, he expected everyone to behave like he wanted them to, he treated everyone in his life as an extension of himself, even his family. Carmella was absolutely blind to the harm she and her husband were doing to their children. A woman who stays with a man even after being humiliated almost every day by his cheating, and takes his blood money without a pang of guilt? Is that a role model for a daughter?
A sociopath who can't control his anger, a murderer involved in several other crimes, a man who says he wants to be like "the strong, silent type", which is supposedly a good man, but turns off his twisted "empathy" whenever it's profitable or convenient? A serial cheater? Is that a role model for a son?
Whatever traits you see in AJ, his sniveling, manipulation, softness etc. are not there *just* because of Carmela. Tony had no idea how to make him navigate the world like a wholesome, confident man because Tony is neither of these things. He has panic attacks and pretends to be a tough guy to his crew. Were the edgelords watching the same show? AJ would probably have been a great guy, he'd probably thrive, but he was born into a family that was pure pretense and in a toxic environment, to damaged parents who deep down didn't give a shit about anything but pretense. Carmella pretended to have a perfect family, Tony pretended to be a good man.

After a certain point the kind of life skills, way of thinking and acting the military indoctrinates you into, well you kind of just have to let it “take” if you will. You have to be willing to let them change you you know what I mean? Let yourself be clay and be molded, be a sponge and absorb the knowledge. I’ve seen guys who didn’t, for one reason or another they refused to let it take or just straight up couldn’t or wouldn’t handle it. It fucks them up, and then they get fucked up as a result. For all the assholes complaining in the comments about AJ having a panic attack. Tony Soprano had probably at least 10 panic attacks through out the show, yet no one is calling him "weak" over it.
Also Tony is acting tough now and wants him to "learn discipline" by sending him to military school. Then in a later season when AJ is actually kind of normal, he tells Tony "I'm going to join the army, I want to learn how to fly helicopters"
Tony freaks out and runs to Carmella to try to stop it from happening. So you can kind of see why AJ is so mixed up. He gets mixed signals from his parents all the time.

ImpalaGurl82 I can vouch for that, although I've thankfully only experienced one, it was so sudden (although stress normally makes them more likely), I was angry and in a heated fight with my parents, my mom slapped me across the face (didn't hurt) and my dad was screaming at me, and then suddenly I went from stoic to being weak in the knees, I just managed to catch myself before I collapsed entirely and I just started hyperventilating and sobbing, I was breathing so quickly that my hands and feet went numb. He didn't want to go to that institution and his brain wanted to pull every last stop possible to prevent it from happening, so it flipped it's own wildcard and worked.
