2:33 "What is this supposed remaster that comes with Shadow Generations doing?" Sonic x Shadow Generations is: - Giving a FULL native 4K, as in pixel perfect 4K, not a 720p picture being pushed out through a 4K signal. - Giving a real 60FPS upgrade that doesn't break the game's physics like the FPS Boost does for both Generations and Unleashed. - Updated textures and UI elements so that the UI and textures don't look pixelated and grainy on 4K TVs anymore. - Packaging the game with the pre-order DLC that hasn't been available to download since the game came out on consoles. - Allowing the game to be played on modern platforms (Switch, PS4, PS5) - Allows original Xbox One/S/X owners to play Sonic Generations in 60FPS because FPS Boost doesn't work on the Xbox One, only the Series' consoles. - Plays the game natively off of the hardware and take full advantage of the system capabilities, as opposed to a built-in 360 emulator that doesn't take full advantage of either the Xbox One or the Series' consoles. You don't just drop a game in an emulator and call it a remaster. Nintendo did that with Mario 3D All Stars and you all crucified them for it. If you can drop the 360 disc in the modern platform and play the 360 version of a game, it's not a remaster, it's the 360 version being played on better hardware. Also HDR isn't in the original PC release (it's also a bad port even by 2011 standards. It just doesn't require a beefy computer to run). And running the game at higher than 60FPS (something that even Colors Ultimate got right) breaks the game.
You’re spot on with the PC port. I definitely won’t be spending $60 on a game I already have on Steam, but it would be nice to have a PC version I didn’t need to smack with a wrench to get it playing every other time I launch it.

Sonic 1 running at half speed is definitely a you thing. It is not a universal problem. It has always ran completely fine for me. (I'm playing it on my Xbox Series S) I even tested it again just to make sure.

Series FPS boost wasn't done by SEGA. It's always been advertised as an Xbox program. Only issues I experienced after about 40 hours of gameplay was Sonic 1 emulation being poor, and 1 swing in Chemical Plant crashing. Otherwise it's a phenomenal FPS patch. Again, it's an Xbox job, SEGA just licensed the game.
In sky sanctuary zone with modern sonic. At the zip lines, if you try to take the shortcut but homing attack to the same zip line you just got off, it will kill you.
I actually own both Unleashed and Generations on Series X and the issues with Generations weren’t there before. For the longest time it ran perfectly. Overall though I find these backwards compatible options to be really good especially for Unleashed. It’s why I’m not sure if I’ll get Sonic x Shadow when it comes out.
We already got the Sonic Turds Collection, it was called Sonic Origins. Although to be fair, they turned good games into turds rather than releasing the actual turds.
I mean it's not a remaster. It's literally the 360 version running in backwards compatibility. A remaster would be a port onto the system. Plus it was done by Xbox themselves. You can also turn off FPS boost on the game if that's causing issues too
8:27 while on my sisters acc, I still can explain 8:27. The mega drive games had animation that ran on specific frames. The boost without optimisation means it tries to read in between frames by moving an alleged rig to look smooth. But the classic games have no rig, thus doubling each frame. The game doubling each frame means it’s half the speed, and I’m pretty sure the sound corresponds to frames, also being doubled in length.
I want to point out that also PC players benefit from SxSG as the external configuration manager the original game has is completely awful. Sometimes the game just won't launch anymore because the game falsely tells you something about GPU issues. Also you cannot connect a controller when you're ingame. The ingame options also don't have much options to customize the game. There is a chance that SxSG also runs on a newer graphics API of DirectX. Sonic Generations is using the ancient, unsupported and issue causing DirectX 9. Generally the new version of the game will be much more optimized than the current awful PC version. A lot of people are saying the remaster is useless, but on a technical side it is VERY needed.
If they had sonic generations have sonic the hedgehog playable for free, in shadow generations, they should let you play shadow the hedgehog for free too.
@@rayvenkman2087 SA2 is already backwards compatible on Series X/S and you can just mod it on PC to have a better framerate I'd rather have Shadow 2005 as a reward tbh
It's an old game development strategy to have the game logic be calculated on each frame. Newer games tend to try and standardize game logic regardless of framerate, but older games almost always did this, which is why Sonic 1 at double the framerate runs at half the speed. If you want a funny example of this elsewhere Bethesda still has their gamespeed tied to framerate, so boosting your framerate makes your character move faster Fallout 76 players would look at the floor so they had to render less stuff, boosting their framerate, and making their character faster Another fun example of this old tradition The logic for homing spells in Dark Souls is tied to framerate, so the remaster that boosted the framerate without changing the logic caused a massive decrease in the accuracy of homing spells
I’m ok with the shortcut not working at least you can still beat the level! And that shortcut didn’t really skip any of the level it was just taking you the same way at a faster pace!
I mean, they're releasing a Bubsy collection next year with Bubsy 3D included. A bad Sonic game compilation wouldn't exactly be too farfetched of an idea.
is loosing the old emulated version of sonic 1 such a bad thing? especially with emulation on literally every hand held device now? nah it wont be missed really. what needs to land is the shadow stuff. if sega screws up on that, then they are in trouble, especially with the failure that is sonic colors definitive.
It turns out, you're completely right my guy! It was confirmed that Sonic 1 will NOT be in Sonic X Shadow Generations. Go figure. I mean, sadly it makes sense. After all, Sega did discontinue the original Sonic 1 from being downloadable because of Sonic Origins. Although, it's not the end of the world. You can still play the OG Sonic 1 from the Sega Classic Collection on PS4 and such. And if you're really lucky like me, we can still play Sonic 1 from the Mega Collection!
What's weird is that chemical plant glitch happens on PC too. Just differently. At least for me. When I play it and take that shortcut the camera doesn't change like it's supposed to. And stays extremely pulled back in 2.5D. So the last 20-30 seconds of the stage from that pully onward need to be played from a mid point camera perspective between 3D and 2D that doesn't change at any point for the remainer of the stage. But still plays in full 3d control. Just the camera is fucked. Idk how or why. But it does. Lol. Try if for yourself and see if it happens to you. I'm curious
It's because the game isn't meant to be played at more than 30FPS. Higher framerates break the games physics, it's just harder to notice at 60FPS than say 120. Luckily the remaster aims to fix this.
@@Essu_ yeah for sure. It's just odd to me that gens would be the kind of game to rely on framerate for stuff to work. You usually only see that in Bethesda games or really old games. Like in Skyrim where if you uncap the framerate the game itself runs at double speed or higher. Everything is way too fast. Animations, walking speed. All that. But most games since the 2000s aren't like that and framerate doesn't usually effect anything unless they chose to tie something to framerate. Like you play a game on PC. Uncap framerate on any game. Usually works just perfectly. Just odd to be gens would fall into that
I don't know why nobody talks about this but sega released MANY and i mean MANY ps3 sonic games on the PS Now which got changed to ps plus but with less games, i think they released every sonic game except sonic 06 and sega tennis game, yeah, even sonic the fighters and sonic 4 episode 1 and 2, unleashed and SA1 and 2!
Bugs in remastered games that never exist in the original versions, Digital Deluxe scams, butchered graphics in ports of Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2 and Colors and letting Sonic 06 released unfinished letting it begin the Dark age of Sonic! Your welcome!
I did not know this existed. I knew they released the original game on modern Platforms and the framerate was abysmal to put it mildly. Glad I bought it on PC instead.
I played this version first and it's completely fine for me. Maybe it's because I played it on Xbox one instead of a series X or S but I think it does run in 60fps.
What're the chances that i just finished replaying sonic generations on the series x and this video releases. Part of me is happy tho that at the very least unleashed got some good treatment this time round
How about nintendo switch has the gamecube version, Playstation have the ps2 version, Xbox consoles has the og Xbox version, and I think pc has a dreamcast controller
If you have a GameCube, Wii or Xbox, I'd go with the Xbox or GameCube version. The PS2 version has half the target frame rate, lots of drops and worse visuals similar to Sonic Heroes for PS2. There's also a hack for GameCube called Shadow Reloaded that has a bunch of improvements over the original.
I don’t have an Xbox Series X or S, but I have an Xbox One, so no 60fps boost unfortunately. I just like being able to play Unleashed again :) But hey I can play OG generations on my Xbox One without the fps boost, and thus, without any of the issues pointed out in this video lmao
I don’t think Sonic Unleashed ever received a resolution boost for the Xbox Series consoles. I’m pretty sure the only reason Generations has a resolution boost is due to it being enhanced for the Xbox One X. The only thing the Xbox Series consoles do for Unleashed and Generations is give them both a boosted frame rate and Auto HDR support. But I could be mistaken.
@@Sydney_Angelyt I know that, but it just still makes me mad that the original version of these games we will get the listed in certain things might not show up
In no way is this a remaster or even a new version in general, it is literally just how 360 games are played on the Xbox Series consoles. Every 360 game is like this, it's literally just basic backwards compatibility. nothing in the actual game itself was changed, just a bump from the CONSOLE ITSELF.
Ngl, if one singular short cut in the second stage, and a mid emulation of Sonic 1 was the worst thing that came from this upscale, I'll let it slide its really not that bad.
It doesn't upscale to 4K 💀💀💀 It runs at native 4K by multiplying the resolution on each axis. Sega didn't do this! It was done by The Xbox Backwards compatibility team. Nothing could be done about the bugs as that would require touching the games code which the Back Compat team won't do. That Chemical Plant bug for example can happen on the PC port when you enable a code on the HedgehogModManager that fixes input delay. It's not a remaster! It's literally just the Xbox 360 version running on the One/Series consoles via emulation. Why is all your gameplay footage laggy as heck? Next time do your research before making a video complaining about 2 bugs that do little to affect the gameplay experience. The fact that i can put my old 360 copy of Sonic Generations in my Series X and get a 60fps boost and native 4K with HDR free of charge is a game changer.
I've played the enhanced version of Sonic Generations on Series X and to say it's the worst version of Generations is a MASSIVE stretch. Other than the 2 things you mentioned being problematic, the enhanced version runs very well overall and the resolution bumb ain't too shabby. Up until recently with the Shadow Content being included with new remaster there really wasn't a reason to buy the new version on Xbox. But even then it still is probably going to be a hard sell when you can buy a 360 copy.
I just saw a video by digital foundry, where it claims that the game now runs even worse than this. The issue in chemical plant was there of course all along and it was never fixed but somehow, now the game runs even worse. Can you confirm this? This video is four months old now but of course Sonic gen x shadow just released and somehow sega made it run worse? I’m just in shock
I wouldn't say this is terrible, although I do understand that one bug in chemical plant is an issue. Interestingly enough, turning off the fps boost does solve this one specific issue. However, playing in 60 fps is a much better trade-off over that bug imo. Sonic 1 also plays fine for me. I'm not sure what's up about that. I'd say it's worth playing on the xbox series, but it is rather pointless with Sonic x Shadow Generations coming soon.
Would you buy the Sonic Turds Collection?
Not for 60 dollars
Just add sonic 06 Sonic chronicles (some how) and Sonic free riders and make it 40 dollars
Maybe not a collection, but I'd buy them individually on a digital shop. They may be bad, but I'd be down to experience them in a way that doesn't bankrupt me.

Only issues I experienced after about 40 hours of gameplay was Sonic 1 emulation being poor, and 1 swing in Chemical Plant crashing. Otherwise it's a phenomenal FPS patch.
Again, it's an Xbox job, SEGA just licensed the game.
Thanks for the info there!
This was very open and obvious information idk how you missed this during writing and during research?
@@ChannelPup it's easily missed info, but there was more discussion about it when it first happened.
@@AceNXIt’s really not easily missed. 10 second google search would have gave him the answer.
@@ChannelPup And yet you're still calling it a remaster.
In sky sanctuary zone with modern sonic. At the zip lines, if you try to take the shortcut but homing attack to the same zip line you just got off, it will kill you.
I wish they could re-release the limited edition figurine.
Most of this can be fixed by turning off FPS boost
We already got the Sonic Turds Collection, it was called Sonic Origins.
Although to be fair, they turned good games into turds rather than releasing the actual turds.
Lol
Nah, they gave us the mobile versions on consoles which people where asking for. You tweakin'.
Ngl I’m pretty sure the 4K resolution upgrade can’t be seen because all the footage is set to 1080p because of UA-cam’s compression system
I mean it's not a remaster. It's literally the 360 version running in backwards compatibility. A remaster would be a port onto the system. Plus it was done by Xbox themselves. You can also turn off FPS boost on the game if that's causing issues too
Maybe it's just me, but there's these weird bugs when playing the egg dragoon boss fight in sonic generations where I just straight up can't hit bro
6:00 and no one spoke about it. I thought there was just something wrong with my copy 💀
Thankfully, you can always turn off the FPS boost if you run into anything truly broken. That's the best thing to do in this situation.
7:43
This is literally what it sounds like when I emulate these games on my Chromebook.
Imagine shadow 06 replaces the OG sonic 1 game on consoles
Annoying dog yaps about nonsense for 10 minutes
I know they would never do it but would it be cool if they had full playable versions of every sonic game thats represented in generations.
Make it SA2 Original and you got a good reward for beating Shadow Story
@@rayvenkman2087 SA2 is already backwards compatible on Series X/S and you can just mod it on PC to have a better framerate I'd rather have Shadow 2005 as a reward tbh
It's an old game development strategy to have the game logic be calculated on each frame. Newer games tend to try and standardize game logic regardless of framerate, but older games almost always did this, which is why Sonic 1 at double the framerate runs at half the speed.
If you want a funny example of this elsewhere
Bethesda still has their gamespeed tied to framerate, so boosting your framerate makes your character move faster
Fallout 76 players would look at the floor so they had to render less stuff, boosting their framerate, and making their character faster
Another fun example of this old tradition
The logic for homing spells in Dark Souls is tied to framerate, so the remaster that boosted the framerate without changing the logic caused a massive decrease in the accuracy of homing spells
I’m ok with the shortcut not working at least you can still beat the level! And that shortcut didn’t really skip any of the level it was just taking you the same way at a faster pace!
I noticed the little chemical plant pulley glitch on PC too
Bro scared us for a sec
I never had any problems when playing it on my series X
Neither have I
I mean, they're releasing a Bubsy collection next year with Bubsy 3D included. A bad Sonic game compilation wouldn't exactly be too farfetched of an idea.
An enhanced re-release of a 3d Sonic game being objectively worse than the original?! Now there's a novel concept I've never heard before!
>Sonic Generations 3DS is Sonic Federations
Lol that actually had me chuckling🤣
Imagine if Izuka said he wanted to improve the game, you see comments saying
“Why is he so negative of Sonic he sold a lot of games”
I mean its just two minor issues, and you can disable FPS Boost anyways
I'm pretty sure the chemical plant shortcut worked for me but the start of level text is bugged out and is like, random buggy symbols
is loosing the old emulated version of sonic 1 such a bad thing? especially with emulation on literally every hand held device now? nah it wont be missed really. what needs to land is the shadow stuff. if sega screws up on that, then they are in trouble, especially with the failure that is sonic colors definitive.
I will not stand for this Sonic 2 SMS slander, its a perfectly fun game and I'd still play it sooner than Heroes
I'm curious
I noticed that myself, although it's inconsistent. Doesn't happen every time. I wonder what's up with that shortcut.
Just odd to be gens would fall into that
I got scared there for a moment.
SEGA: why cant sonic fans appreciate anything?
Bugs in remastered games that never exist in the original versions, Digital Deluxe scams, butchered graphics in ports of Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2 and Colors and letting Sonic 06 released unfinished letting it begin the Dark age of Sonic! Your welcome!
Bro ong took 10 minutes to show that the game has 2 minor glitches and calls it a "terrible remaster" 🙏💀💀
The Remastered version that can be purchased on the Microsoft Store is just a port that you can play via virtual console really.
6:42 please tell me it ain't so...
Fun fact this can be replicated by modding gens on pc
I did not know this existed. I knew they released the original game on modern Platforms and the framerate was abysmal to put it mildly. Glad I bought it on PC instead.
Or you could just download a sonic 1 rom and set it up in an emulator in 5 minutes
I’m pretty sure Xbox handles the frame rate boosts but I could be completely wrong
They do it with the approval of the publisher i think
You're right
I already know what he was going to talk about blue thought he could trick us
I still own Sonic Generations and Sonic Unleashed on XB360. But I was thinking of getting Sonic X Shadow Generations on PS5.
Need a PS2 to play Shadow the Hedgehog in the new version
Same
How about nintendo switch has the gamecube version, Playstation have the ps2 version, Xbox consoles has the og Xbox version, and I think pc has a dreamcast controller
Ive only ever played sonic gens on series x and this whole time i thought the chemical plant short cut was always broken
Ah, good ol' Pup. Classic clickbaiting girlboss as always.
Trying to 100% Sonic Unleashed on the PS3 sucked because of that frame rate, even things as simple as bush’s would make the game lag
You scared me for a second, I thought this was a review for the recent remaster lol
The second I saw the title, I couldn't help but audibly sigh "Jesus Christ" XD
EDIT: Oh, wait, it's not Sonic X Shadow Generations?
Got fooled!
I don’t have an Xbox Series X or S, but I have an Xbox One, so no 60fps boost unfortunately. I just like being able to play Unleashed again :)
But hey I can play OG generations on my Xbox One without the fps boost, and thus, without any of the issues pointed out in this video lmao
You are right. Unleashed on Xbox Series stays at the original resolution but both Generations and Unleashed are enhanced on both
I think theres also a slight input lag which makes me want to just play the game on my xbox 360 for non-modded gameplay or on PC for modded gameplay
Even though this isn’t that good I’m gonna be mad that it will be delisted and i got that cristmas
if you already bought it, you can keep playing
@@Sydney_Angelyt I know that, but it just still makes me mad that the original version of these games we will get the listed in certain things might not show up
@@Sydney_Angelyt and the same case with the steam version, those mods that have been created, might not be able to be ported
The pc port its so broken with modern pcs what are you talking about
The launcher its also so broken, you need fan patches to make it work property
Absolutely freaking facts mate
Would Sonic Turds Collection include 06? Because I think that game would be good if you take out the rushedness.
1:26 that doesn't have to do with the topic get to the main point!
We did get a Sonic Turd collection, it’s called Sonic Origins +
We got the turds collection. It was the 12 Game Gear titles in the Origins DLC. 😉
It doesn't upscale to 4K 💀💀💀
It runs at native 4K by multiplying the resolution on each axis.
Unsubed after this video, 11 minutes to comment two bugs, outstanding!
Bro I had a panic attack this is the second time I pre-ordered a Sonic game and when I read the title I got scared
I played the Sonic 1 emulator on the Xbox One and it's no different on the Series X (now with 4K UHD). No clue what's wrong with your game.
This glitch isn't there in SxSG. I didn't notice any performance issues either.
@ I’m referring to the Xbox 360 backward compatibility version.
Man, i gladly take one broken shortcut and not Sonic 1 for 60fps Generations, dunno about you but Generations works great on Series X
1:19 I know a guy that owns Sonic Jam.
