18:08 absolutely my favorite version of the song. the “it doesn’t matter” reprise in the bridge followed by an newly added lyrical section sends me to the MOON
Definitive version of the song, imo. There's a reason in the Lyn cover in Rockin Sonic uses the added sections from this. Really wish we got this version done for the symphonies.
This, basically. Tony Harnell's voice during the new bridge is a thing of beauty. Hell, I even like the Classic remix more because of the Endless Mine snippet. These are both AMAZING versions of the song, and are just as good if not superior to it in their own special ways.
It's a vast improvement over the original. Better production, better vocals, bass part, guitar part, an actual guitar solo, and the new bridge section makes it an absolute banger.
Chemical Plant Act 2 is one of my favourites mostly due to the no touching water achievement, was genuinely a little challenging & had to make & optimise a route for me self
One of my greatest moments when I was 12 was discovering the shortcut at the beginning of the stage on my own. And as heroes as my first 3D Sonic game too, it easily became my favorite level with both those 2 memories.
In terms of art style and aesthetic, I think this game does it best. Every stage looks colorful and fits the vibe of the franchise very well. In my opinion, the best looking stage is Seaside Hill (Act 2). It’s so vibrant and I love beaches, so this one really impresses me. I enjoy playing it with the music changed to Emerald Coast. I love it. It’s also my favorite stage in general, and I’m glad you feel the same way.
I agree on your takes tho i kinda preferred unleshed artstyle yea theyre very similar but unleshed feels more polished and Pixar-e i respect your opinion tho
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the first Sonic game I ever played, so I was excited to see Chemical Plant make a return. Act 2 is my favorite because of nostalgia and all the different paths you can take. As for music in City Escape 2, I wasn't a fan of it at first but it slowly grew on me.
I agree with u on top pick. Seaside Hill modern's level design is perhaps the most complex in any Sonic game. Everything is so open, there's so much room to do all kinds of skips & so many routes to try out & see which r the fastest. The absolute pinnacle of Sonic if u ask me.
18:08 it absolutely is my favourite version! The original felt repetitive and kind of loopy, but this one feels more complex and has more layers, so I personally enjoyed it more during gameplay
Thats why colors in my opinion is the weakest boost games because of too much slow paste 2d platforming and not enough moments of us speeding through the level
As a little kid my mind was fucking blown to see speed highway in Sonic Generations. It was so cool to an old level I liked with high definition graphics.
Seaside Hill Act 2's level design is peak 3D Sonic and I can only hope we get back to that level of quality and amount of depth again. Seriously, imagine an entire game of stages with that one's level of routes and it'd be a masterpiece

I'm with you on Planet Wisp. It doesn't feel like it fits in very well with the other stages. There is far too much Sonic Colors design philosophy jammed into this one, particularly in the back half. In the end we get a strange amalgamation of both games where it fails on both accounts. Its far too long for a Colors stage and overstays its welcome, something Sonic Colors did well to avoid. At the same time, utilizing those slow 2D platforming sections spits in the face of the fast-paced philosophy behind the rest of the Modern Sonic stages. Planet Wisp isn't a bad level, certainly not compared to some of the trash the franchise would dump through the rest of the 2010s, but it manages to easily find the bottom of this list by failing both games the that inspired it.
The bigger focus on 2d platforming and the lack of fast pastiness compared to unleashed and generations thats reason colors in my personal opinion is the weakest boost game yes i even prefer forces over it
16:42 and the same engine! City Escape remix has some pluses, I do like the added bridge with the new vocals because while I think the original is a little more catchy it did always feel to me like it was missing a section. ...when I'm just listening, I can go for either one, honestly.
Ok, I'm going to defend Planet Wisp Act 2- that is pretty much how the Planet Wisp levels were in Colours. Very 2D focused after a while so in a way, they were very faithful to the originals' gameplay 😏
Sorta but not really, colors is way more puzzle based and uses multiple wisps to get that effect while gens only has rocket and spike spam but yeah, too much 2D should've chosen asteroid coaster😎
I fully see what you're saying, but as a Generations stage it ends up weaker. I just don't see the point in extensive 2D sections in Modern Sonic's stages when Classic Sonic is in the same game devoted entirely to 2D. So I was hoping Gens would change that up and better balance the 3D to 2D ratio.
I would say that the ideal Modern stage is one in which Sonic boosts a lot (since he’s the fastest thing alive), and have some obstacles that may obstruct his top speed like small bumps or windy roads which is where drifting really shines, but when he reaches branching pathways he has to take the high road which may kill his momentum but saves a lot of time to reach the goal (simply few platforming sections), while for Classic stages there should be a lot of platforming stages but with a more reaction-based philosophy to it so that you can also enjoy Classic Sonic spin dashing through the stage

It's really hard to make a Sonic Generations level ranking aside from Planet Wisp, because all levels stand out in great ways. My favorite being Seaside Hill 2.
I agree with everything except for the last 4, I’d definitely say rooftop run and City escape are my top 2, other than that, yeah that was a pretty good rating
i used to really not like planet wisp act 2, but i really grew to like the level the more i played it. It's honestly one of my favorite levels now and levels like city escape act 2 have kind of fallen down to the bottom of my list since a whole minute is spent on the gun chase. Its totally awesome, but while planet wisp became more fun as i learned it better, city escape became more tedious and a little frustrating the more times i boosted through the ending. I dont think id mind it if the stage had at least one more minute of 3d gameplay
I honestly think that the slower platforming sections in modern Sonics levels are massive pace breakers. Frontiers' physics engine is a lot more suitable for those kind of challenges as the controls in Frontiers are a lot more precise, but the Unleashed and Generations physics engine I feel is at its best when the levels are reaction tests and high speed spectacles. It's why Speed Highway Act 2 is my favourite level in Gens due to how breakneck it is and why I personally am not a big fan of levels like Seaside Hill Act 2 and Crisis City Act 2 due to Generations poor controls when moving at slower speeds.
Do most people prefer the Modern version or Classic version of Planet Wisp? I have to agree that the Classic version is better because at least there's actually something to the platforming and puzzle solving of the Classic version, whereas Modern, outside of that initial outdoor section is really uninspired in its blocky and stop-and-go platforming I've spent a lot of time playing Unleashed's boost stages lately and I think Unleashed did a better job with boost Sonic than Generations did tbh. Generations is still great and I do prefer Modern Sonic's stages to Classic Sonic's but Unleashed I think is boost Sonic at his best (at least from what I've played). I find it hard to say for sure that Unleashed is better than Generations though since I'm just not all that into the Werehog. Though maybe I just need to play it some more to get into it
I will NOT tolerate City Escape Act 2 (OST) slander. it's explosive it screams "I love sonic adventure 2" and best of all, it even references "It doesnt matter" (sa2 version) IN THE SONG!! now rank the bosses and side missions.
My ranking: Modern Sonic: 1. Seaside Hill - I agree with you on it being #1. Probably the best bost stage ever (unless you count Eggmanland). 2. Speed Highway - I was a bit disappointed not to see it higher. I think there's a lot of action and fun platforming in it. 3. Sky Sanctuary - A lot of emphasis on 3D platforming and speed. 4. Crisis City - Personally, I really like stomping a lot in this level. It's one of the cleverest uses of the move. Besides that, I love the level design in this stage, but the quick step segment at the end could've been a bit shorter. 5. Chemical Plant - Short answer: the light dash shortcut at the beginning. Long answer, very satisfying speedrun to pull off, but they should've had more 3D. 6. Planet Wisp - I actually don't mind the emphasis on 2D and I really like the usage of the rocket wisp in this stage. My issue is that some of the jumps and the way you land on platforms feel a bit finnicky at times. 7. Rooftop Run - One of the shorter levels in the game and it's very boost-to-win. Plus, the quick step segment at the end is a bit too long for my liking (but it was the same in OG Rooftop Run so I won't be too harsh). I do really like the platforming here though. It's a solid stage, but one of the weaker boost stages IMO. 8. City Escape - The skateboard segment lasts about 30 seconds and the truck segment lasts about a minute. That's 1.5 minutes of mostly braindead gameplay in a stage that lasts about 2.5 minutes. the 1 minute where you're on the ground is great, but there should've been more of that. 9. Green Hill - Yeah, it's a tutorial stage, but it's very linear and there aren't many pathways. There's a lot of boost-to-win here. Out of all of Generations, this stage is the closest to Forces's level design. Not bad, but definately the weakest boost stage in the game IMO. Classic Sonic: 1. Crisis City - Love the platforming, the spin dash jumps on enemies that send you a lot forward and the end stage sign flying away. 2. Rooftop Run - Very fast level, and even the slower oments can be cleared faster with a good spin dash jump. The clock segment at the end is a highlight. 3. City Escape - Much better than modern City Escape IMO. A lot more platforming, the skateboard isn't overused and there are really clever intended shortcuts for using spin dash jumps. 4. Planet Wisp - I love how they utilized the spike wisp to solve puzzles. 5. Speed Highway - Perhaps the most open 2D stage in the game, but there are too many bottomless pits for my liking and do-or-die scenarios. It works with Trip's campaign in Superstars because it's post-game content (it's a given it'll be harder than usual), but in Generations it's only the 4th level so it doesn't feel right for me. 6. Seaside Hill - I love how I need to do badnik bounces to reach the upper pathways. Admittedly, it DOES remind me a lot of Labyrinth zone, but it's still way better than Labyrinth. 7. Sky Sanctuary - Whoever thought that placing 3 red rings on 3 different pathways that can't all be reached in 1 run was a dumba**. I love collecting all 5 red rings in 1 run, but here I just can't. Besides that, that stage is P great. A bit slow at times with those slow vines, but it's not a big deal. 8. Green Hill - A much better introduction to Classic Sonic's gameplay than Green Hill act 2 is to modern Sonic's gameplay. 9. Chemical Plant - Yeah, I too often forget this level exists. It's definately good still (better than modern Green Hill IMO), but I think the others are better.
Intro update, maybe. Avatar update? Unlikely for a little bit. I don't intend on renewing my Adobe subscription though so if I don't renew, I'll have to create a brand new Pup puppet. So we'll see!
My ranking would literally just be measured by what % of the level is 3d, because classic sonic in generations is a pain in the ass and then modern sonic has to deal with the same problems almost half the time
I’ve always hated levels with an over abundance of bottomless pits because It feels like it’s giving me a penalty for going fast which is why I don’t really like crisis city or sky sanctuary. My favorite level is probably speed highway act 2 despite heroes being my favorite game
I truly dont understand the hate boner Sonic fans seem to have for the 2D sections in the boost games. By its nature, boost gameplay, while fun, is incredibly shallow. These games never fully take advantage of being 3D the same way the adventure games did, ans their movement is very binary and soft QTE-like. Switching to 2D gives the designers new ways to challenge the players and shake up the gameplay while still being fun and fast-paced. Some of my favorite sections in the boost games are 2D, like the second halves of Savannah Citadel Act 1 and Sweet Mountain Act 2, and they wouldnt be possible if the levels were fully 3D. Not to mention, 2D is where the boost gameplay got its start and is arguably where its at its most consistent, between the Rush games and Colors DS. Why is it treated as heresy for their 3D counterparts to do the same? It seems like its just an issue of principle, "muh 3D" if you will, and I find that to be a very weak and entitled criticism.
bro planet wisp is my favorite actualllllly tho, i like it more than og colors, i agree w ur positives, but i loved the 2D for the stage when i typically hate it, i guess cuz colors has more 2d anyways, the wisp wasnt my favorit either and the stage length was great
Pumpkin Hill is a Knuckles treasure hunting stage. Do you mean Sky Rail which takes place in the same area or were you actually wanting Sonic to look for emeralds?
To be fair... while the generic Cyberspace visuals took away a lot of the world building of that stage, functionally I prefer it. With jump Deacceleration switched off and the spin-dash, you can absolutely soar across that level in a way you never could in Gens.
I will never understand why ppl think that 3D games shouldn’t have 2D sections in it. No one complained when they did it Mario odyssey. There’s no logic or reason to it. Especially since having both 2D and 3D in a game adds diversity to it and stops it getting repetitive. It also lets devs be more creative with the level design.
my taste and yours are completely different im not a fan of the 3d platforming it just feels sluggish, the physics just dont compliment it, like sky sanctuary for example I hate the fact that you have to use your boost sparringly inorder to platform its actually my least favorite level in the game funnily enough i have more fun playing planet wisp act 2, id prefer if they just focused more on the speed aspect like speed highway did
Weird request. But I'm not usually into patreon and stuff but I'd be willing to follow if I knew it could make a difference. How many patreon supporters you need to make rent, I kinda want a goal. Thanks again.
I never played generations but I have played the Sky Sanctuary Act 2, Green Hill Act 2 and City Escape Act 2 in Frontiers I preferred SS act 2 because of all the multiple paths and high speed jumps you can do with the spin dash and hacks you can do with the homing dash for now Sky Sanctuary Act 2 in frontiers is my Second favorite cyberspace stage and number one being Sky Rail from SA2 in Frontiers

During the second verse, yes.
honestly everything you described planet wisp act 2 as matches up with colors as a whole so i think the level represents colors perfectly LOL
It does, but I was hoping Gens would improve on that 3D/2D ratio, especially when we have a Sonic who is entirely 2D in said game.

Classic Sonic:
Your thumbnail looks clean. Will you ever do a intro and avatar update?
I didn't know the Tornado was bi, good for it!
Agree
It being 2d in them isn't the issue its the imbalance of 3d and 2d thats the issue
To be fair, games featuring the boost especially ones like Generations make better use of 3d than the sa games, especially sa2.
@@snakey888 debatable
Modern City Escape is literally peak wdym 😭
8:43 “pun entirely intended” ahh dialogue🤦🏾♂️
bro planet wisp is my favorite actualllllly tho, i like it more than og colors, i agree w ur positives, but i loved the 2D for the stage when i typically hate it, i guess cuz colors has more 2d anyways, the wisp wasnt my favorit either and the stage length was great
Yeah Modern city escape is good but Classic city escape is better for me any day
I don't get the whole "2D sections as modern Sonic = Bad" thing.
Me personality i kinda wish they brought back pumpkin hill but City escape and rooftop run where awesome stages where amazing to play
Pumpkin Hill is a Knuckles treasure hunting stage. Do you mean Sky Rail which takes place in the same area or were you actually wanting Sonic to look for emeralds?
@@MysticClaws100 I mean i wanted like a hybrid of pumpkin hill and sky rail where here Sonic's looking for the emeralds
the pup posted!!!
Heroes is the Goooooooaaaaat frigger
You should redo this video when Shadow Generations comes out and maybe rank the bossee
Hot take - I think Seaside Hill has the best act 1 stage
Short Answer: It's Sky Sanctuary Act 2.
No, we're not here to talk about how Frontiers ruined it, shut up.
To be fair... while the generic Cyberspace visuals took away a lot of the world building of that stage, functionally I prefer it.
With jump Deacceleration switched off and the spin-dash, you can absolutely soar across that level in a way you never could in Gens.
16:22 THAT'S THE FLYING BATTERY WHAT THE FUCK??
oh it's a different flying battery that's no fun
Crisis city act 2 is peak
i prefer the modern version music wise to the original city escape
I wonder if anyone would put Planet Wisp act 2 in the #2 or #1 spot of their list and provide reasons why
22:03 fin.
Crisis City is my favourite...
i prefer the generations version of city escape music!
Will you be ranking the shadow stages?
I like the modern city escape cover :/
But is it your favourite? 🤔
@@ChannelPup actually yeah to be honest
Planet wisp is great imo. Still the weakest 2 levels
I must disagree with you on sky sanctuary act 1, literally the best 2D stage in the game
The best sonic generations level is seaside hill
I will never understand why ppl think that 3D games shouldn’t have 2D sections in it. No one complained when they did it Mario odyssey. There’s no logic or reason to it. Especially since having both 2D and 3D in a game adds diversity to it and stops it getting repetitive. It also lets devs be more creative with the level design.
my taste and yours are completely different im not a fan of the 3d platforming it just feels sluggish, the physics just dont compliment it, like sky sanctuary for example I hate the fact that you have to use your boost sparringly inorder to platform its actually my least favorite level in the game funnily enough i have more fun playing planet wisp act 2, id prefer if they just focused more on the speed aspect like speed highway did
I ramber play sonic generstion Xbox 3600 version back inusa amcrecian in brooklyn ❤😂🎉😢😮🐆☺️🤫🦊🦊 8:03
Hi I’m new to the channel
Why Sonic 3 looks better than generations? And has better physics too
Planet wisp act 2 hear me out
Escape from the city from generations is better than in sa2
PLANET WISP BOTH ACtS do something about it
Weird request. But I'm not usually into patreon and stuff but I'd be willing to follow if I knew it could make a difference. How many patreon supporters you need to make rent, I kinda want a goal. Thanks again.
On top of my existing patrons, I'd be able to make rent easily if 500 people sent in $1 a month. ❤
@@ChannelPup alright. I will get on that
Best level at the bottom again. 😢
Its the worst bro
I never played generations but I have played the Sky Sanctuary Act 2, Green Hill Act 2 and City Escape Act 2 in Frontiers I preferred SS act 2 because of all the multiple paths and high speed jumps you can do with the spin dash and hacks you can do with the homing dash for now Sky Sanctuary Act 2 in frontiers is my Second favorite cyberspace stage and number one being Sky Rail from SA2 in Frontiers
Cyberspace doesn't do any of these levels justice. Play Generations, it's much better than Frontiers
@@MysticClaws100 I never did Colors Ultimate and Mania were my first Sonic Games and I enjoyed the cyberspace stages sure it can get janky but I still enjoy it! Cant wait to get Generations on the switch!
@@brickzoneanimations8395how good’s your computer man? It’s very cheap on Steam
@@brickzoneanimations8395
The switch version is shaping up to be the worst version, half the fps and lower res.
@@snakey888 I play the switch version and I dont care sure it may look like a tech demo but you know which game had the same treatment? SA1! Frontiers is the SA1 of the 2020's! and if things go well Sonic x Shadow Generations will be the SA2 of the 2020's!
Channel pup why are you a fanboy supervillain?
