Wendy not being a mother-like figure continues this weird trend where femininity is seen as "flawed" and something that needs to be "fixed" in these reboots. In other words, they just write these girls as masculine, which is kinda backwards and sexist in its own way. Femininity and masculinity both have strengths and weaknesses. Wendy being like another lost boy doesnt "empower" her, its just making the statement that she was weak before - despite Wendy being, by far, the most powerful character in the book. (Note: when I refer to femininity and masculinity I am of course not referring to male/female sex, its a separate thing)
I totally agree. Make them strong and independent, female second, instead of “ girl who is strong and independent”. I’m all for girl power, but make it genuine
that’s definitely an observation that this film has seem to reinforce. It does kinda seem like lately a female character can’t be a strong woman AND maternal anymore (I guess people have stopped watching avatar the last air bender). It doesn’t help that Disney seems to favor poorly written girl bosses and Mary sues lately.
😧 Exactly! I have no idea what is up with Disney where they're trying to make their animated leads have flaws and quirkiness but hell no we can't have the live adaptation female characters have any flaws 😑
@@shootout-shinobi6672 In general, that seems to be a problem when writing female characters.... if not characters in general who they want to portray as "I am strong, and I don't care about gender roles or expectations". AND the worst part is that you could at least have an interesting scene of people discussing what's "feminity" or what's "masculinity" (or, be extra and include characters who are non-binary or transgender). EIther the character's take on it, how they feel society and other people trust upon themselves, or their opinion preferences. You could have say, a female character like a very stereotypically female thing, and make it clear she likes it because She genuinely likes it. It's her own decision and taste to like something that happens to be seen as "stereotypically female". Or what people see as "strength" in general. The compare and contrast between someone who is strong physically but either mentally or emotionally weak, and someone who is very weak physically, but VERY strong emotionally and /or mentally. And what the characters want or perceive as a weakness.
You are speaking facts, except for the final note. Yes, while masculinity/femininity and the male/female sex do have some differences (keyword SOME), saying that they are not interconnected to their respective sex in any way whatsoever is just incorrect. Men and women can exhibit both masculine and feminine traits, but men are obviously gonna do a stronger job at displaying masculinity while women do a stronger job at displaying femininity. Because men and women are different, regardless of how hard the media tries to skew those differences. Masculinity isn't always about being overly tough, and femininity isn't always about being delicate. It's nothing disrespectful or sexist, it's a fact.
The marketing cracked me up because whoever made this movie clearly thought they were so brave and groundbreaking for putting girls into the lost boys. However, if they read the book, they would know that the reason there are no lost girls is because girls are too clever to fall out of their prams as infants, so ironically they’re diminishing them.
I actually really like the backstory between Peter and Captain Hook, and I really wish the movie had gone more into it. As it stands, this film still isn't the worst Disney live action remake, but man os it boring. Disney really needs to "grow up" and learn that these remakes just don't work.
The backstory between Peter and Hook is better than some previous adaptations of the story, however this backstory does make Peter (the so-called hero) seem like a complete and utter d**k.
My favorite part is when Wendy blew off the door to Hook's chambers with a sawed off shotgun and told him "knock knock" and proceeded to blow him away. Powerful stuff.
They seriously had Wendy slap Peter to prove that she's a "Girl Boss." If Peter had physically assaulted Wendy, then he'd be called an abuser. Disney should be teaching their audience that it's not justified to slap anyone, period.
To be fair, Peter was abusive in the original book (going as far as to kill any Lost Boy who so much wanted to grow up or cut a guy’s hand off just for the laughs), so he would probably be deserving of at least a couple of slaps - if not an outright punch to the face. That doesn’t seem to be the case so much with this adaptation.
In the book, Peter explains, there are only lost boys on his island because girls are too smart to fall out of the cradles as babies and end up lost. Thought it was cute but it’s gone now.
There’s a book called “Straight on Till Morning” where Wendy returns to Neverland with the help of Captain Hook and the details in that story make more sense than in this movie.
I hope Doug reviews Peter Pan & Wendy again as the Nostalgia Critic. I feel like the changes they made to the Peter Pan story here not only don't work because they are still following the original Disney version but they betray some of the original ideas of the original book. Tinkerbell's jealousy towards Wendy is a huge part of her character, the reason there is no Lost Girls is because the original book implies girls are smart to know better to not to give into the temptations of Neverland. Don't even get me started on how Wendy gets the ability to fly because of some forced, girlpower message. Despite its flaws, I think Peter Pan 03' is the best live action version of the story. As for Disney's take on J. M. Barrie's story, watch the animated version.
There's also the theory that the reason why Peter was the only one who didn't grow up and was the only one who didn't need Tink's pixie dust was, guess what, because he was dead.
@@RoseBaggins In J M Barrie's canon, this isn't true; the book makes it clear that he is not dead. But he is described as being a psychopomp, as he's described as guiding the spirits of children who've died along part of the journey to the afterlife. One backstory JM Barrie gives Peter in the book 'The Little White Bird' is that babies are described as having once been birds, and after being born, Peter remembers this and regains his power of flight. Still, when a bird named Solomon Caw points out that he is no longer an actual bird, Peter loses his ability to fly, so he lives in Kensington Gardens with the birds and the fairies for a while, learning how to play the pipes for the Fairy Orchestra. Because of this, Peter becomes only half-human due to the magic he's experienced, known as a Betwixt-and-Between. The Fairy Queen decides to grant him two wishes one night. He wishes to regain his ability to fly so that he may return to his mother, stating that she keeps the window open for when he returns, and his second wish is to be held in reserve. But when Peter returns home, he finds that he isn't ready to grow up, so he temporarily leaves without waking his mother up, promising to return to her. Twice, he returns home, longing to show his mother affection but fearing awakening her, he plays her a melody on his pipes and leaves once more. Finally, Peter decides to return home permanently, telling the fairies that it was his second wish, but when he returns home, the window is barred, and another baby has been born, so Peter returns to the Gardens. One of his playmates in the Kensington Gardens is a little girl named Maimie Mannering, who gets lost in the gardens after closing time, and they spend time playing together, even having a fairy wedding. But despite their friendship, Maimie doesn't want to return to Peter, as she knows she wouldn't want to leave him, so she leaves gifts for him, including an imaginary goat that the fairies make real. It's described that every night, the fairies would build a house in case of any lost children Peter finds in the gardens after dark. From what is written about Maimie, she's likely the prototype character for Wendy, as there is a lot of crossover between the two, especially with thimbles and kisses. Peter does reference some of this story (running away from home and living with the fairies) in the book of Peter Pan, but JM Barrie does state in the narration that no one knows if the backstory is true, but it's what Peter believes. Peter doesn't grow up because that's a choice that he's made, and fulfilled because he's no longer fully human.
The moment I remember most from the movie With Honors, is when Pesci's character tells Brendan Fraisers character that " winners dont even know they are in a race, they just love to run", that line has really stuck with me.
The completely missed the point of who Wendy is. She’s not supposed to be a b*tch to everyone, she’s supposed to be a loving maternal figure which makes the lost boys question whether or not being a lost boy is what they really want. By taking that away to make Wendy something she’s not, it takes away that part of the film.
@@bluespirit5112 She has a husband and daughter at the end of the book and play. Also, who wants to die alone? Why did Disney think that was an inspiring message?

I find it hard to believe that the guy who directed this also did _The Green Knight,_ which was awesome. I wonder, either David Lowery did have complete creative control here Last Jedi-style or he had next to none and Disney hired him just to have the name of a hot, young director on the Poster.
My gut says the latter, because can't you just see the giant wall of notes and a bunch of people around a table going, "What if Peter Pan was blank" and a copy of both the book and original movie is in the garbage can.
One thing that I wish they would have done that would have been a nod to the original was have the father and captain hook be played by the same actor. In the orignal cartoon, the same voice actor was used for both. With an actor like Alan Tudyk you could have very easy put him in both rolls.
They did the same thing in the 2003 having Jason Isaacs play both Mr Darling and Captain Hook, I think it comes from the original play where they would have the teo characters played by the same actor? It's supposed to be (I think) about how the children viewed their father/J.M Barrie viewed his father/fathers of the time, so I have no idea why they didn't do that with this adaptation 🤨
"Um, Peter? Are you sure this is Neverland? It doesn't look as bright and magical as you described it." "Uh oh, you're right. I think we made a wrong turn at that one star. This looks more like Middle-Earth." "Oh, well, that doesn't sound bad." "The Amazon Prime version." "Let's turn back! NOW!" Why does this movie exist? Is it to "right" some perceived "wrong" from the animated original? OK, that one's depictions of Native Americans aged like milk, but what else needed fixing? Certainly not Wendy, her brothers, or The Lost Boys' personalities.
The main thing I liked was how Tiger Lily and Captain Hook represented to Wendy the positive and the negative of being a grown up. And how Peter Pan tricks the pirates. Otherwise, it's mostly forgettable.
that scene where wendy's happy thoughts is her growing up to be such a girl boss she's literally in a house alone as an old woman cracks me up. You think thats a good future cause you live for yourself all your life then at the end your like "I made such a terrible mistake"
I don't know. The Captain Hook backstory just was all over the place when it's explained Peter cut off his hand and fed it to a crocodile. Like yeah, that's still f-ed up he does that in the original story, but Hook is just a evil pirate in the original story so it doesn't make Peter Pan look like a total psychopath who mutilates his friends if they don't follow his ideals.

Yep, that hits the nail on the head. Between their efforts of diversity in film feeling half-baked for the performers themselves usually or the fact that there are sometimes good ideas but the execution never takes advantage of them better, that's Disney's output for the past 6 years for most of their big products, and it's frustrating to see when the have the budgets and resources to take so much better care in those regards compared to most.
Things I liked about the movie(some spoilers): Them flying through the clock Jude Law as Captain Hook The crocodile scene(even though it plays no other part in the movie) Captain Hook's backstory with Peter Pan Wendy having a flashforward and realizing growing up is just as much an adventure as being a kid The ship flying Wendy's house originally being Peter's house Everything else wasn't terrible, but it wasn't entertaining, either

Here’s the thing people have to understand about these Disney remakes, and even most modern marvel and Star Wars movies, even Disney’s own animation studio now, it doesn’t matter who the director is, Disney only wants a product now, not art. My older sister is probably the biggest Peter Pan fan, so growing up I’ve seen basically every iteration. After watching this version, my biggest takeaway was that it was boring. The movie in my opinion followed the basic structure of the original story without making the movie engaging. You have a story filled with fairies, pirates, mermaids, and the magic powers of flying and not growing up. How does one make that boring? Most of the time the characters didn’t even fly around Neverland (which looked more like Ireland than a mythical island), they walked. Also the relationship and chemistry between Peter and Wendy was pretty much nonexistent. Even though Wendy doesn’t want to grow up at first, she is supposed to want Peter to be attracted to her and not see her as a mother figure. The only addition to the story I enjoyed was the part at the end where we find out that Wendy’s house used to be Peter’s. I think that adds a nice touch as to why he would visit the Darling house in the first place. Other than that little detail, I found this to be another forgettable Disney Live Action Remake.
The idea of the Darling House having once belonged to Peter really isn't all too new; I've seen a few people speculate in the past that the Darling House may have been the place that Peter was once born or that Maimie Mannering, a playmate of Peter's from the Kensington Gardens, was potentially a young Mary Darling (there is a bit of evidence in the book), and that the fairy wedding he and Maimie shared could have formed a bond between him and her female descendants.
I will say, this version actually did Tiger Lili justice, she's indigenous, badass, fighting warrior but a sweet friend still, having strength in both the physical and emotional, plus they have her speaking in her native tongue and she's caring towards Peter. I love it!
@@eamonclark4952 I disagree, this Wendy it's just annoying and rude. For me, 2003 Wendy is the real girl boss, she wanted to have adventures and become a writer, she got the respect of the lost boys without troubles, join the pirates and latter fight against them, got her first kiss with Peter Pan and still went back home to grow up and have a life that will not end with her dying alone.
There's a Vocaloid song about peter pan that has a good plot twist. In "Portrait of the Pirate F" (don't read if you don't want spoilers), Peter Pan kills hook and, when time passes, he gets bored because there's nothing exciting to do and every day is the same. So he goes to the ship and puts Hook's clothes and start "playing" that he is a pirate. Then, while Tinkerbell is watching Peter, she remembers a time when she took a child to Neverland, revealing that the last Hook was also a Peter Pan long time ago. So, at the end, this song is about a cycle of Peter Pans defeating Hooks and, when they get bored, they turn into the new Hook and everything starts again with a new child.

The only good thing that comes from these remakes is Eventually that well is going to dry up soon. Especially with the performance and reception to this film and 2023's The little mermaid, the public interest is waning and the box office numbers aren't hitting what they use too. This forces Disney to return to their more creative roots and we may start getting Quality films again.

Still though it has a lot of problems but also I really enjoyed the sword-fighting scenes but it still falls into a lot of Disney remakes traps.
This Movie made every single one of Peter Pan’s Adaptations look like a Masterpiece

Even the bad Peter Pan films like Pan (2015) and Peter Pan Live! will still be remembered and talked about than this latest Peter Pan offering.
Including school plays.
@@hunterolaughlinThat Peter Pan film from the early 2000's will always be my favorite.
Agreed. It actually makes me sick to see people find any possible reason not to like it, because not liking live action Disney remakes is so coooool 🙄
I actually really like the backstory between Peter and Captain Hook, and I really wish the movie had gone more into it. As it stands, this film still isn't the worst Disney live action remake, but man os it boring. Disney really needs to "grow up" and learn that these remakes just don't work.
Very much agreed
Doug's right, that should've been the focus.
You want a Peter Pan and Hook origin film! Watch Wendy 2020 it’s just that. A really underrated film
The backstory between Peter and Hook is better than some previous adaptations of the story, however this backstory does make Peter (the so-called hero) seem like a complete and utter d**k.
@@L337M4573RKif you’ve read the original story, that’s what Peter kinda is. He’s a borderline sociopath
They really have no idea why Wendy is in this story.
It's about elevating females and destroying males.
Amen
To be fair, Peter was abusive in the original book (going as far as to kill any Lost Boy who so much wanted to grow up or cut a guy’s hand off just for the laughs), so he would probably be deserving of at least a couple of slaps - if not an outright punch to the face.
That doesn’t seem to be the case so much with this adaptation.
They made Wendy really unlikable and thats a crime
To me she was the charm of the original film
I've only ever been interested in the 2003 Peter Pan as a live action adaptation and I just knew this wasn't gonna be as awesome.
Universal Pictures did a better job 20 years ago than Disney. Which is funny in my opinion
What I like about that one is that it had big passion behind it
In the book, Peter explains, there are only lost boys on his island because girls are too smart to fall out of the cradles as babies and end up lost.
Thought it was cute but it’s gone now.
Congratulations, Disney, you've made the argument that girls can be just as stupid as boys.
Yay?
Hearing Doug review these awful remakes is more entertaining than the movies themselves.
There’s a book called “Straight on Till Morning” where Wendy returns to Neverland with the help of Captain Hook and the details in that story make more sense than in this movie.
Oh yeah I’ve read that book! I really wish Disney had just adapted that instead of just retelling Peter Pan for the umpteenth time.

The completely missed the point of who Wendy is. She’s not supposed to be a b*tch to everyone, she’s supposed to be a loving maternal figure which makes the lost boys question whether or not being a lost boy is what they really want.

I don't know. The Captain Hook backstory just was all over the place when it's explained Peter cut off his hand and fed it to a crocodile.

I think the reason Disney’s switch’em ups don’t work is not just because the scripts are bad (though that does not help), but because it is clear they are doing it because the chart guy told them it would bring in the best numbers.
I'm just glad Glad Jim Gaffigan was having fun here.
I will say, this version actually did Tiger Lili justice, she's indigenous, badass, fighting warrior but a sweet friend still, having strength in both the physical and emotional, plus they have her speaking in her native tongue and she's caring towards Peter. I love it!

Yeah, Tiger Lilly was awesome
They should have just called this movie "Wendy" and been done with it since that's all it was.
Yeah
